We present a study of HII regions in M51 using HST/ACS images taken as part of the Hubble Heritage Program. We found about 19,600 HII regions in M51 with $H_{\alpha}$ luminosity in the range of $L=10^{35.5}-10^{39.0}\;erg\;s^{-1}$. The $H_{\alpha}$ luminosity function of HII regions (HII LF) in M51 is well represented by a double power law with its index ${\alpha}=-2.25{\pm}0.02$ for the bright part and ${\alpha}=-1.42{\pm}0.01$ for the faint part, separated at a break point $L=10^{37.1}\;erg\;s^{-1}$. Comparison with simulated HII LFs suggests that this break is caused by the transition of HII region ionizing sources, from low-mass clusters (including several OB stars) to more massive clusters (including several tens of OB stars). The HII LFs with L < $10^{37.1}\;erg\;s^{-1}$ are found to have different slopes for different parts in M51: the HII LF for the interarm region is steeper than those for the arm and the nuclear regions. This observed difference in HII LFs can be explained by evolutionary effects: HII regions in the interarm region are relatively older than those in the other parts of M51. The size distribution of the HII regions is fitted by a double power law with a break at D = 30 pc. The power law index for the small HII regions with 15 pc < D < 30 pc is ${\alpha}=-1.78{\pm}0.04$, whereas ${\alpha}=-5.04{\pm}0.08$ for the large HII region with 30 pc < D < 110 pc. The power law indices of the size distribution are related with those of HII LF, and the relation between the luminosities and sizes of HII regions is fitted well by $L{\propto}D^{3.04{\pm}}$.
CCD observations in V, I and H$\alpha$ for NGC 3389 are used to present photometry of 61 HII regions. Their positions, diameters and absolute luminosities have been determined. The luminosity and size distribution functions of the HII regions in NGC 3389 are discussed.
We present VR CCD photometry and long-slit spectroscopy of a late type spiral galaxy NGC 7678. The grey scale images and isophotal maps illustrate the presence of a weak bar from which spiral arms emerge. There are many HII regions along the spiral arms, but bright giant HII regions are more concentrated in the massive southern arm. The bright compact nucleus of NGC 7678 is bluer than bulge and bar. The spectral features of the nucleus and HII regoins are very similar but the nuclear spectra shows higher $[NII]{\lambda}6583/H_\alpha$ than those of the HII regions. The nucleus of NGC 7678 seems to be intermediate type between HII region nulcei and LINERs by the ratio of $[NII]{\lambda}6583/H_\alpha$, but it is more likely to be HII region-like nucleus if we consider the $[NII]{\lambda}6716,6731/H_\alpha$ together. The star formation rate is estimated to be about $0.2 M_\bigodot\;yr^{-1}$ based on the $H_\alpha$ flux.
We review the early historical developement of astronomical spectrographs, properties of emission line spectra of HII regions in spiral galaxies, and absorption line features of galactic globular clusters. Emission line spectra of HII regions within three spiral galaxies NGC 300, NGC 1365, and NGC 7793, which were observed from AAT/IPCS, had been analysed, and we discuss the abundances of elements in HII regions and the radial abundace gradients through the galaxies. The radial UBV color variations of two globular clusters, NGC 1851 and NGC 2808, were examined for correlations with radial variations of several absorption lines in the integrated spectra, which were obtained from SAAO 74 inch telescope and image tube spectrograph. Nine giant star's spectra in NGC 3201 were also obtained and analysed for the radial abundance gradients in the globular cluster. The results show that the presence of a radial color gradient in a globular cluster is correlated with the presence of abundance gradients. Finally, we suggest some scientific programs for the new high dispersion spectrograph, which will be installed to the BOAO 1.8m telescope.

The frequency distribution of HII regions radii in our galaxy has been investigated. The correlation between the number of these regions and their radii has been re-determined, and could be represented by an exponential function. The size distribution of the HII regions in 10 spiral galaxies has been derived and combined with that of our galaxy to derive the distances of these galaxies. It has been found that the distances derived are in a good agreement with the published ones. The interstellar extinction in the galaxies has no influence on the distance estimate when using this geometrical method.
A diagnostic tool has been proposed to convert the observed surface distribution of hydrogen recombination line intensities into the radial distributions of the electron temperature and the density in HII regions. The observed line intensity is given by an integral of the volume emission coefficient along the line of sight, which comprises the Abel type integral equation for the volume emission coefficient. As the emission coefficient at a position is determined by the temperature and density of electrons at the position, the local emission coefficient resulted from the solution of the Abel equation gives the radial distribution of the temperature and the density. A test has been done on the feasibility of our diagnostic approach to probing of HII regions. From model calculations of an HII region of pure hydrogen, we have theoretically generated the observed surface brightness of hydrogen recombination line intensities and analyzed them by our diagnostic tool. The resulting temperatures and densities are then compared with the model values. For this case of uniform density, errors in the derived density are not large at all the positions. For the electron temperature, however, the largest errors appear at the central part of the HII region. The errors in the derived temperature decrease with the radial distance, and become negligible in the outer part of the model HII region.
The 3mm transitions to CO, $^{13}CO,\;CS,\;HCO^+$, and HCN have been observed toward the compact HII regions in W58 using the 14m Daeduk Radio Telescope (DRT). Some of the observed lines show high-velocity wings resulted from outflowing materials of the compact HII regions. We derive the beam averaged column densities of the observed species and compare their relative abundances. The $HCO^+$ abundance appears to be smaller by about an order of magnitude than those of 'typical' quiet molecular clouds. CS may be a good reference molecule in comparing relative abundances in different physical conditions.
We present the results of HI 21 cm line observations to explore the nature of the high-velocity (HV) HI gas at - 173${\circ}$, which appears as faint, wing-like, Hi emission that extends to velocities beyond those allowed by Galactic rotation in the low-resolution surveys. We designate this feature as Forbidden Velocity Wing (FVW) 172.8+1.5. Our high-resolution Arecibo HI observations show that FVW 172.8+1.5 is composed of knots, filaments, and ring-like structures distributed over an area of a few degrees in extent. These HV HI emission features are well correlated with the HII complex G173+1.5, which is composed of five Sharpless HII regions distributed along a radio continuum loop of size 4.4${\times}$3.4, or -138 pc ${\times}$ 107 pc, at a distance of 1.8 kpc. G173+1.5 is one of the largest star-forming regions in the outer Galaxy. The HV HI gas and the radio continuum loop seem to trace an expanding shell. Its derived HI parameters including large expansion velocity (55 km/s) imply the SNR interpretation. Hot xray emission is detected within the HII complex, which also supports its SNR origin. The FVW172.8+1.5 is most likely the products of a supernova explosion(s) within the HII complex, possibly in a cluster that triggered the formation of these HII regions.
Making use of log $T_{eff}-M_{bol}$ diagram along with Stohers' stellar evolutionary tracks (1972), we estimated the masses of 107 O stars in HII regions, which were selected from the catalogue compiled by Goy (1973). It is found that our estimated masses of O stars range from $20M_{\odot}\;to\;120M_{\odot}$ and about 20% of them falls in the mass range above $60M_{\odot}$ in agreement with earlier findings of Conti et al. (1975).
We compare the distribution of HI 21cm, HII 6563 AA, and CII 157.7 micron m line emission over the entire Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Bright CII emission is associated with HII regions and their surroundings, with a good correlation between CII and Halpha filaments. Diffuse CII emission is also detected in regions with no HII emission. We found a reasonably good correlation between the extended CII emission and HI emission. (omitted)
