Development of the Adaptive Igniter for Expanding HID Lamp Life (HID 램프 수명 연장을 위한 적응형 점화기 개발)

  • The metal halide lamps are now widely used in the application and commercial lighting due to their attracting properties such as good color rendering and high efficiency. But, they have the serious problem of acoustic resonance for high frequency operation and they need the high voltage to ignite. So, they have not been applied to indoors. Over the past few years, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on the electronic ballast together with hot restarting and resonance phenomenon. But, very few attempts have been made with the adaptive ignition method according to the lamp state. In this paper, electronic ballast is proposed for metal halide lamps with an igniter for adaptive ignition. The proposed electronic ballast can generate different ignition voltages according to the arc tube state.

  • This paper presents dimming control system for automotive 35W metal halide discharge(MHD) lamp electronic ballast. HID lamp demands a highly efficient ballast and very complex control circuitry that can control complex transient state in applying to automotive. Therefore, in this paper, a microcontroller-based digital control method for the HID lamp ballast is presented for optimal control that can adapt complex transient state, steady state and various environments. In developed dimming system, the system is designed to control the lamp output voltage step by step(continuous) using microcontroller according to CdS sensor. Therefore the designed dimming control system give good driving condition to diver and realize the power control effectively. The results of the proposed system is verified through various experiment results.

  • In this paper, we suggested electronic ballast with the half bridge inverter for the automotive HID lamp. The electronic ballast for the automotive HID lamp should be supplied by the low-frequency square wave avoiding the acoustic resonance. When the HID lamp is hot state, the electronic ballast should supply the sufficient current to the take over to the lamp at the re-strike ignition state for a few milli-second. We have introduced the new take-over current control method that could have control operating frequency and minimize circuits to the take over current circuits.

Gaussian Decomposition Method in Designing a Freeform Lens for an LED Fishing/Working Lamp

  • In this paper we propose a freeform secondary lens for an LED fishing/working lamp (LFWL). This innovative LED lamp is used to replace the traditional HID fishing lamp, to satisfy the lighting demands of fishing and the on-board activities on fishing boats. To realize the freeform lens's geometry, Gaussian decomposition is involved in our optics-design process for approaching the targeted light intensity distribution curve (LIDC) of the LFWL lens. The simulated results show that the illumination on the deck, on the sea's surface, and underwater shows only small differences between LED fishing/working lamps and HID fishing lamps. Meanwhile, a lighting efficiency of 91% with just one third of the power consumption can be achieved, when the proposed LED fishing/working lamps are used instead of HID fishing lamps.

  • 본 논문에서는 After-market에서 자동차 헤드라이트 상 하향 빔 전환 시스템으로 주로 사용하고 있는 solenoid 방식의 여러 문제점을 개선하기 위하여 차량용 릴레이를 이용한 HID램프의 헤드라이트 상 하향 전환 컨트롤 방식를 제안하였다. 특히, 차종에 따라 달라지는 상 하향 빔 전환 입력신호에 대하여 릴레이가 일정하게 상 하향 동작을 할 수 있는 signal selector회로를 구성하고, 두 개의 램프를 relay로 전환하는 방식을 채택함으로서 그 동안 자동차 하우징 구조상 기존 H4 타입에만 국한되어 오던 차량용 HID램프의 헤드라이트 상 하향 빔 전환 시스템을 H1, H3, H7, H11, 9004, 9006, 9007 등 다른 베이스타입의 벌브에도 적용이 가능하도록 하여 우수한 범용성을 갖도록 하였다.

  • 본 논문은 공진 인버터를 적용한 HID램프를 구동하기 위한 전자식 안정기를 설계하고 구현하였다. 제안된 전자식 안정기는 스위치 턴온 오프시의 손실을 줄이기 위해서 소프트 스위칭 기법인 ZVS(Zero-Voltage Switching)을 도입하였다. 점등은 LC필터의 공진주파수범위에서 풀브리지 인버터 제어에 의한 공진으로 이루어 진다. 점등후에 컨버터는 저주파수 구형파로 동작한다. 공진 기동시의 LC필터의 공진주파수는 ($f_o$=160kHz)이고, 고조파를 감소시키고 음향공진현상을 피하기 위한 벅컨버터 스위칭 주파수(고주파수 : 50~60kHz 와 저주파수 : 170Hz)를 선택하였다. 실험을 통해 공진 인버터를 적용한 HID램프용 전자식 안정기가 안정적으로 동작함을 확인하였다.

  • In this paper, the requirements for the HID lamp igniter transformer capable of hot strike are described. A small size high voltage (HV) transformer composed of a Rod type ferrite core and aluminum foil is designed. The Electro Magnetic characteristics are simulated with Finite Element Methodology (FEM). The design guideline of the HV transformer that produces an output voltage with a peak value of 25kV and a pulse width of larger than loons for a 35W automotive HID ballast prototype is discussed as an illustrative example.

A Study on the Sensibility Evaluation on the Color Temperatures of Electrodeless HID Lamp (무전극 HID 램프의 색온도 감성평가에 관한 연구)

  • An experiment was carried out to evaluate the emotion and sensibility evoked from the different color temperatures(CCT) of electrodeless HID (ELHID) lamp. For this purpose, three ELHID lamps and a metal halide lamp were used as the experimental light sources and thirty Korean adjectives related to the lighting affectiveness were selected for the evaluation. The results showed that ELHID lamps induced different sensibilities according to their color temperature. In particular, 6500 K ELHID was similar to metal halide which has the CCT of 5600 K in the evaluation. Based on the results, we suggested some Korean adjectives and their corresponding English ones which are thought to be suitable for the verbal descriptions of ELHID lamps.

  • In this paper, four types of igniters were modeled and their characteristics were researched. And then we analyzed and experimented the effect on the control IC operation in this system. Due to the high ignition voltage, the DC power line on control IC is contaminated with the impulsive noise voltage. So the control IC operation is stopped. Therefore we have found that contamination of DC power noise is reduced by shielding, grounding pattern, and filtering method. We showed that the experimental results are agreed with the theoritical value obtained by the four types of ignitor models.

Examination of Loss Characteristics of Full-Bridge Electronic Ballast for HID Lamps (HID-lamp용 Full-Bridge 전자식 안정기의 손실 특성 규명)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the calculated method of loss characteristics of full-bridge eletronic ballast for 250Watt HID lamps by approximated modeling. These lamps have the most emit effiency and color rendering. Especially, the majority of losses appear to the MOSFET do full-bridge, L of output terminal and driver IC, besides losses occur to the R in the ballast. These losses cause heating and breakage of MOSFET. When HID-lamp arrivals the steady-state, loss of ballast is measured 9% and analyzed value is 8% approximately. Accordingly it is not too much to say that greater part of losses is examined.
