  • Purpose: Corporate social responsibility is a self-regulating business model that helps a firm be socially accountable to the public. By practicing corporate social responsibility, firms can be conscious of the kind of impact they are having on all aspects of society, including economic, social, and environmental. Corporate social responsibility activities are not directly linked to increasing corporate performance and corporate value, but rather involve spending expenses. Based on these facts, this study verifies whether the effects of corporate social responsibility activities differ depending on the firm's situation. Research design, data and methodology: This study analyzed the effect of market competition on corporate social responsibility activities using logistic regression analysis on listed companies in the KOSPI and KOSDAQ for fiscal years 2014 through 2016. In this study, market competition was measured using the Herfindahl-Herschman Index(HHI). Higher HHI value can be interpreted as a lower degree of market competition. We also measured corporate social responsibility activities using the KEJI Index published by the Korea Economic Justice Institute (KEJI). If a firm-year is included in the top 200 companies of the KEJI Index, it is classified as a good corporate social responsibility activity firm. Results: We find that companies in less competitive market were not included in the KEJI Index. This result indicates that firms in the market with lower market competition perform less corporate social responsibility activities that incur costs. An additional analysis showed that there was a significant negative relationship between the market competition and the corporate social responsibility activity scores published by the KEJI Index. These result adds robustness to the result of the hypothesis that firms that have a monopolistic place in the market practice passive corporate social responsibility activities. Conclusions: The results show that managers of a firm in the lower market competition have a lower incentive to use limited resources for projects that are not directly related to revenue. The results of this study imply that corporate social responsibility activities vary according to the position of the business. Therefore, this study suggests that market investors should consider the degree of competition in the market when they evaluate corporate social responsibility activities.

  • Since China's economic reform in 1978, international trade has enormously flourished and the port industry is reckoned as a key factor contributing to this growth. This study examines the Bohai Rim port group in the scope of top three largest ports Qingdao, Dalian and Tianjin. By utilizing indicators including concentration ratio (CR), Herfindahl-Hirschman index (HHI), the Gini coefficient and the Lorenz curve as well as shift-share analysis (SSA), the concentration level of this port group in the period 2004-2016 is discussed. As a results, CR demonstrates a decrease during the studied period with a minor fluctuation, and HHI index shows a trend of deconcentration with Bohai Rim port group. In addition, SSA indicates that during the period 2004-2016, the overall shift index of Qingdao port was -1.371 meanwhile with Tianjin and Dalian port were 0.118 and 1.252 in turn. These results suggest that the growth in regional influence of Tianjin and Dalian ports would motivate to the deconcentration pattern in Bohai Rim region. The findings assist decision makers and scholars to obtain knowledge about the port development this region. Considering the geographic position of these three ports as the gate of northeast China, it is suggested that these three ports could explore their advantages and cooperate with the small ports in the surrounding area to enhance their influences in the future study.

  • In Korea, there are a lot of regulation on gambling industry. Among them, the most unique regulation is the CAP system. The purpose of CAP system is to minimize the social side effects of gambling industry. For that, National Gambling Control Commission controls the maximum number of business premises of gambling companies. The CAP system is a means of preventing excessive expansion of the gambling industry. The CAP system has lasted since 2009. This study investigate how the CAP system influence the structure of gambling industry. In result, after the CAP system carried out, the growth rates of gambling industry are similar to those of national GDP. And before the CAP system, the HHI index and CR index were decreasing trend. However, after the CAP system, the HHI index and CR index were not decreasing. That means the structure of gambling industry has been stable and settled. And there were few variation among the gambling companies in sales. In conclution, the CAP system influenced the gambling industry to be stable. There were few competition among the gambling companies in Korea. And the structure of gambling industry has been settled.

  • Multi-view video is obtained by capturing one three-dimensional scene with many cameras at different positions. The computational complexity of multi view video coding increases in proportion to the number of cameras. To reduce computational complexity and maintain the image quality, improved prediction structure and motion estimation method is proposed in this paper. The proposed prediction structure exploits an average distance between the current picture and its reference pictures. The proposed prediction structure divides every GOP into several groups to decide the maximum index of hierarchical B layer and the number of pictures of each B layer. And the proposed motion estimation method uses a hierarchical search strategy. This strategy method consists of modified diamond search pattern, progressive diamond search pattern and modified raster search pattern. Experiment results show that the complexity reduction of the proposed prediction structure and motion estimation method over JMVC (Joint Multiview Video Coding) reference model using hierarchical B pictures of Fraunhofer-HHI and TZ search method can be up to 40~70% while maintaining similar video quality and bit rates.

  • Russia has access to unique port locations and routes, one of them is North Sea route, which have been a major debate topic for last several decades. In order to handle any shipments along the route, an adequate and capable port system must be present. This study aims to identify development and competition patterns from 2007 to 2016 of Russian ports in the Arctic basin, concentration trends in particular. The objectives achieved through utilizing the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), concentration ratio (CR), the Gini coefficient and Lorenz curve, and shift-share analysis. Results demonstrate concentration trend, positive overall growth and lack of real competition. Originality of this study lies in the fact that certain analysis had not been done in previous studies, but importance of it may be found in several papers. Findings of this paper may assist policy-makers, port authorities and other researchers in understanding and further study on the region.

  • Purpose: To analyze the structure of Korean nurse labor market and examine its effect on hospital nurse staffing. Methods: Secondary data were obtained from Statistics Korea, Education Statistics, and Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service and Patient Survey. Intensity of monopsony in the nurse labor market was measured by Herfindahl Hirshman Index (HHI). Hospital nurse staffing level was divided into high and low. While controlling for confounding factors such as inpatient days and severity mix of patients, effects of characteristics of nurse labor markets on nurse staffing levels were examined using multi-level logistic regressions. Results: For characteristics of nurse labor markets, metropolitan areas had high intensity of monopsony, while the capital area had competitive labor market and the unemployed nurse rate was higher than other areas. Among hospital characteristics, bed occupancy rate was significantly associated with nurse staffing levels. Among characteristics of nurse labor markets, the effect of HHI was indeterminable. Conclusion: The Korean nurse labor market has different structure between the capital and other metropolitan areas. But the effect of the structure of nurse labor market on nurse staffing levels is indeterminable. Characteristics such as occupancy rate and number of beds are significantly associated with nurse staffing levels. Further study in support of the effect of nurse labor market is needed.

  • The purpose of this study is to test empirically the effects of Entry Barriers for the stock prices of Venture Business using the Ohlson Model which is modifying and extending in terms of growth and the potential growth energy. Because the traditional Ohlson model(1995) on which the firm's value is determined only based on abnormal earnings and book value have numerous limitations when we evaluate the value of venture Businesses with high technology and new emerging market. In order to overcome these limitations, We can introduce items of net sales growth ratios and industrial property-to-net asset ratios into as proxy variables of the growth and potential growth energy. In the process of analyzing these research tests, we have set three kinds of hypotheses and tested then empirically compared with KOSDAQ ordinary listing business and KOSDAQ venture businesses between long-term analysis and short-term analysis. According to the degree of concentration reflecting HHI index, our empirical research were performed in depth. Therefore, the results of this study show us that all three kinds of Hypotheses are accepted.

  • This study analyzes the concentration ratios (CR) and the shift effect in the system of Korean container ports that concern the export and import of container cargos, especially from/to 5 overseas origin/destination (O/D) regions, using the Hirshmann-Herfindahl Index (HHI) and the Shift-Share Method. The results shows that the CR has decreased during the last 20 years, from 0.86 to 0.44, mainly because cargos from/to the Far-East/South-East Asian regions have become more dispersed to several domestic container ports, especially from the Port of Busan. This study also indicates that there has been little change in the CR for all cargos, like the value of -0.3%, in the last 5 years. However the change in CRs for the cargos from/to the North America and Europe is positive, with the value of 7.6% and 6.6%, respectively. It can be inferred that the future development of medium- and small-sized container ports in Korea is not very likely. The study also suggests that the CR and the shift effect of the Korean container ports for the cargos by the domestic O/D regions should be analyzed in the future to suggest policy implications in great detail.
