  • The purpose of this study was to obtain the serum lipid levels according to the lifestyles, and examine the influence of lifestyles on the serum lipid levels among adults who examined the health checkup in an university hospital. The subjects for this study were 4,112 adults who underwent medical examinations at the health center of a university hospital in Daejeon city from Jan 2012 to Dec 2013. The lifestyles and serum lipid levels of study subjects were obtained from self-recorded questionnaires and medical examination charts of the hospital. As a result, the mean values of the serum lipid levels (TC, HDL-C. LDL-C and TG) and atherogenic index (AI) of the study subjects showed a significantly difference according to the lifestyle, such as age, alcohol consumption, smoking, regular exercise, overeating and meat consumption in both sexes. The TC, HDL-C. LDL-C, TG and AI showed a positive correlation with age, AUDIT score, but the HPI score showed a negative correlation in both sexes. In the age-adjusted odds ratio, the risk ratio of an abnormality of TC, HDL-C. LDL-C, TG and AI increased significantly because there was an increase in the group of everyday overeating and meat consumption, smoking group, no exercise group, and low HPI group than their respective counterparts in both sexes. The above results suggested that the serum lipid levels of the subjects was closely related to increasing age, and lifestyles, such as alcohol consumption, smoking, regular exercise, overeating, and meat consumption.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of blood pressures, hematological and biochemical properties of blood according to the degree of obesity in health checkup examinees. Study subjects were 3,731 adults of 20 years and over (2,312 males, 1,419 females), who underwent health package check-up at the Korea Health Management Association from Jan. 2007 to Dec. 2009. As a result, the rates according to the degree of obesity of study subjects were 4.6% in low weight group, 44.3% in normal weight group, 25.0% in over weight group and 26.1% in obesity group. The over weight group were significantly higher in 40's age group than other groups, and the obesity group were significantly higher in 50's age group than other groups. The abnormal rates of SBP, DBP, TG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, ALT, AST in male were significantly higher than that of female. With respect to degree of BMI, the abnormal rates of SBP, DBP, TG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, ALT, AST, GGT, ALP were significantly increased with higher level of BMI. The age-adjusted odds ratio in the abnormal level of SBP, DBP, TG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, AST, ALT and GGT were significantly increased in overweight group and obese group than that of normal weight group.

  • This study examined the serum lipid levels according to the obesity indices, and obtained the relationship between obesity indices and serum lipid levels among adults who underwent a health checkup in a university hospital. The subjects for this study were 4,112 adults aged 18 to 77 years who underwent medical examinations at the health center of a university hospital in Daejeon city from Jan 2012 to Dec 2013. The serum lipid levels (TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, AI) and obesity indices (height, weight, waist circumference, body fat rate, BMI, WHR WSR) of the study subjects were surveyed from self-recorded questionnaires and medical examination charts of the hospital. As a result, the serum lipid levels (TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, AI) of the study subjects were increased significantly with higher level of obesity indices (WC, body fat rate, BMI, WHR WSR) in both sexes. The TC, LDL-C, TG, and AI showed that positive correlated with the WC, body fat rate, BMI, and WSR in both sexes, but HDL-C was negatively correlated with the WC, body fat rate, BMI, and WSR in both sexes. The above results suggest that the obesity indices and the serum lipid levels are closely related, i.e., the serum lipid levels increase with increasing obesity indices.

  • Purpose: Dysregulation of adipokines caused by excess adipose tissue has been implicated in the development of obesity-related metabolic diseases. This study evaluated the effects of mugwort (Artemisia princeps Pampanini) ethanol extract on lipid metabolic changes, insulin resistance, adipokine balance, and body fat reduction in obese rats. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either a control diet (NC), high-fat diet (HF, 40% kcal from fat), or high-fat diet with 1% mugwort extract (HFM) for 6 weeks. Results: Epididymal and retroperitoneal fat mass increased in the HF group compared with the NC group, and epididymal fat mass was reduced in the HFM group (p < 0.05). No difference was observed in serum levels of total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) among the groups. However, triglyceride (TG), TG/HDL-C ratio, and TC/HDL-C ratio increased in the HF group and significantly decreased in the HFM group. TG and TC levels in the liver were significantly higher in the HF group, whereas these levels were significantly reduced in the HFM group. HF rats had lower insulin sensitivity as indicated by increased homeostasis model assessment of the insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) value. HOMA-IR values significantly decreased in the HFM group. Adiponectin levels were higher in NC rats, and their leptin and PAI-1 levels were lower. Relative balance of adipokines was reversed in the HF group, with lower adiponectin levels but higher leptin and PAI-1 levels. In contrast, the HFM group maintained balance of adiponectin/leptin and adiponectin/PAI-1 levels similar to NC by reducing leptin and PAI-1 levels. Conclusion: Overall data indicated that mugwort extract can be effective in alleviating metabolic dislipidemia, insulin resistance, and adipokine dysregulation induced by a high-fat diet.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out what effects aerobic exercises and acupuncture point stimuli have on the blood. For this purpose, we reviewed 10 papers on aerobic exercises and 10 papers on the stimuli to acupuncture points and compared the changes of HDL-C, seroenzyme GOT and GPT. The results showed that HDL-C increased significantly after aerobic exercises; more so than before as stated in the papers on aerobic exercises. On the other hand, HDL-C decreased significantly after acupuncture point stimuli; more so than before as stated in the papers on the stimuli to acupuncture points. Seroenzyme GOT increased more significantly after aerobic exercises than shown before in the papers on aerobic exercises. However, there was a more significant decrease after the stimulus than shown before in the papers on acupuncture points stimuli. Seroenzyme GPT increased more significantly after aerobic exercises than shown before in the papers on aerobic exercises. There were no significant differences before and after on, the acupuncture points stimuli, according to those papers. Therefore, as HDL-C increased significantly when doing aerobic exercises, aerobic exercises prove to be a more effective treatment method than stimuli to the acupuncture points for patients with hyperlipidemia. However, from the facts that seroenzyme GOT and GPT increased significantly after aerobic exercises, we find that aerobic exercises may be more of a burden on the tissues of the liver, skeletal muscles, stomach, etc. than the stimuli to acupuncture points.

  • This study was carried out to discover the effects of eating habits and health-related life style on blood pressure, $\gamma$-Glutamic acid Peptide Transferase($\gamma$-GPT), blood glucose and High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol(HDL-C). 185 subjects(85 male, 100 female) were selected, who were living in the Cheonju area aged 40#s to 60#s. The mean systollic blood pressure(SBP), diastollic blood pressure (DBP), $\gamma$-GPT, fasting blood sugar(FBS) and HDL-C for all the subjects were 118mmHg, 77mmHg, 281U/l, 90mg/dl and 45mg/dl, respectively. The SBP and DBP for subuects over 60 years old were 126mmHg and 81mmHg and were significantly higher than subjects in their 40#s and 50#s(p<0.001, p<0.005). The HDL-C of the group that rarely ate breakfast was 57mg/dl and that was significantly higher than the 44mg/dl scored by those who ate breakfast everyday(p<0.05). The SBP for subjects having a snack 2-3 times/week was 125mmHg and that was significantly higher than the 114mmHg of those having a snack everyday(p<0.05). The $\gamma$-GPT for subjects consuming alcohol everyday was 44IU/L and that was significantly higher than 18IU/I of the non-drinking group(p<0.001). The $\gamma$-GPT of light smokers was 53IU/I and that was significantly higher than the 22IU/I for non-smoking participants(p<0.001). The DBP, SBP, $\gamma$-GPT, FBS and HDL-C related to exercise not significantly different. The SBP(p<0.001) and DBP(p-0.01) between age group was positively correlated. The $\gamma$-GPT between drinking frequency(p<0.001), drinking quantity(p<0.05), and smoking(p<0.05) was also positively correlated. The FBS between exercises had a negative correlation(p<0.05), and the HDL-C between breakfast had a negative correlation(p<0.05). These results indicate that decreasing drinking and smoking, when combined with appropriate exercise, will decrease the $\gamma$-GPT and fasting blood sugar level, and help preventing adult diseases.

  • Trans fatty acids (TFAs), especially elaidic acid, formed during partial hydrogenation of vegetable oils have been shown to increase LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and decrease HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), thereby increasing the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio and elevating the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, studies on the health effects of ruminant TFAs have suggested that these TFAs, which are primarily vaccenic acids, have no or inverse association with coronary heart disease. Thus, dietary recommendations or legislation for TFAs should consider the differences in the physiological effects of TFAs derived from various food sources. This present review recapitulates the progress in TFA research by analyzing recent epidemiological studies or intervention studies and comparing the cardiovascular health effects of industrially produced TFA and ruminant TFA.

  • Rat lipoprotein-deficient plasma possessed a lipid tramsfer inhibitory activity when it was added to purified human plasma lipid transfer protien, while it lacked a lipid transfer activity. Incubation of whole rat plasma with partially purified human lipid transfer protein resulted in big changes in lipid distribution of rat plasma lipoproteins. There w was a 4-fold increase in cholesteryl ester(CE) and 4 47 % reduction in triglyceride(TG) in very low density lipoproteins after 2싹lour incubation. In high density lipoprotein $2(HDL_2)$ there was a 9fold increase in TG and 33 % reduction in CEo HDL3 had 82 % reduction in CE. The result indic cates that the absence of the lipid transfer activity in rat plasma can be ascribed not to the inability of rat lipoproteins to serve as substrates but to the lack of 야Ie lipid transfer protein in rat plasma. The erefore, species differences in lipid transfer betwee en lipoproteins should be taken into consideration to interpret results of studies on lipoprotein m.etab bolism using rats.

  • Euonymus alatus(Thunb.) Sieb has been used for cancer theraphy such as Liver cancer, esophagus cancer, stomach cancer, and uterine cancer in folk. Eupolyphaga simemsis(ES) extracted from Euonymus alatus(Thunb.) Sieb increases HDL-C/TC ratio and LCAT activity. TGF-${\beta}$ and Insulin has been Knoen as factors to induce the supression of proliferation of Hep3B, Human hepatoblastoma cell. Plasma HDL3-C involved in carbohydrate methabolism in the liver was maintained in low level by Euonymus alatus(Thunb.) Sieb. The low level of plasma HDL3-C suppresses the transition from normal liver to Fat liver. Finally, this resuly in suppression of cancer in liver. In this study, Euonymus alatus(Thunb.) Sieb showed higher cell toxicity in hepatoblastoma cell(Hep3B) compared to the uterine cancer cell(HeLa). This means Euonymus alatus(Thunb.) Sieb seems not to affect in the all kinds of cancer. In future, we will study whether Euonymus alatus(Thunb.) Sleb have an effect on the liver cancer induced by virus and hepatocellular carcinoma. Also, the mechanims of suppression of cell proliferation in HCC need to investigated.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of combined exercise on body composition and cardiovascular disease risk factors in sarcopenic obesity elderly women. The subjects for the study were 21 obesity elderly women over 65 years old. They were divided into two groups, the sarcopenic obesity group(n=9) and non-sarcopenic obesity group(n=12). The variables of body composition and CVD risk factors were measured in all the subjects before and after 16-week combined exercise. The findings of this study were as follows; In the sarcopenic obesity elderly women significantly decreased total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), and left baPWV. The non-sarcopenic obesity elderly women significantly decreased total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), and left baPWV, but significantly increased high density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL-C). The most important finding in this study was that sarcopenic obesity elderly women showed delayed effects of a 16-week combined exercise on HDL, LDL-C, BP, and right baPWV compared to the non-sarcopenic obesity elderly women.
