  • A simple and efficient synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidinones or thiones is described, using silica-supported perchloric acid ($HClO_4-SiO_2$) as a heterogeneous catalyst from an aldehyde, $\beta$-dicarbonyl compound, and urea or thiourea under solvent-free conditions. Compared to the classical Biginelli reactions, this method consistently has the advantage of high yields, short reaction time, easy separation, and tolerance towards various functional groups.

  • In order to improve the performance of green emitting phosphors for plasma display panel, the $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn,Al$ phosphors were synthesized using sol-gel technique and studied using SEM and VUV photoluminescence spectrometer. pH values of the starting solutions (pH = 0.5$\~$2.34) were controled by HCl as the catalysis of hydrolysis and wet gels were dried at $80^{\circ}C$ and $120^{\circ}C$, respectively. We investigated the effects of pH and drying temperatures during sol-gel processes. The results indicated that the phosphor prepared at pH = 1 showed the maximum emission intensity in both drying conditions and the effect of pH of the starting solution on morphology were increased with particle size as HCl and phosphor dried at high temperature showed more spherical and smaller particles than at low.

  • $SiO_x/ZnO$ composites were prepared from sol-gel method for excellent cycle life characteristics. The composites were coated by PVC as a carbon precursor. ZnO removal to create a void space therein was able to buffer the volume change during charge and discharge. To determine the crystal structure and the shape of the synthesized composite, XRD, SEM, TEM analysis was performed. The carbon contents in the composites were confirmed by TGA. The pore structure and pore size distribution of the composite was measured with the BET specific surface area analysis and BJH pore size distribution. Enhanced electric conductivity by carbon addition was determined from powder resistance measurement. Electrochemical properties were measured with the AC impedance and the charge and discharge cycle life characteristics. When carbon was coated on the $SiO_x/ZnO$ sample, the electrical conductivity and the discharge capacity were increased. After removal of ZnO with HCl the surface area of the sample was increased, but the discharge capacity was decreased. $SiO_x/ZnO$ sample without acarbon coating showed very low discharge capacity, and after carbon coating the sample showed high discharge capacity. For cycle life characteristics, $C-SiO_x/ZnO$ composite (Zn : Si : C = 1 : 1 : 8) with a capacity of $815mAh\;g^{-1}$ at 50 cycle and 0.2 C has higher capacity than existing graphite-based anode materials.

  • Spent lithium-ion batteries are treated by reduction-smelting at high temperatures to recover valuable metals. Solvent extraction and precipitation of the HCl leaching solution of reduction-smelted metallic alloys resulted in a filtrate containing Ni(II) and a small amount of Si(IV). Adsorption and precipitation experiments were conducted to recover pure Ni(II) compounds from the filtrate. Si(IV) was selectively loaded onto polyacrylamide, but this method did not efficiently filter the solution due to an increase in viscosity. The addition of Na2CO3 as a precipitant to the filtrate led to the simultaneous precipitation of Ni(II) and Si(IV). However, it was possible to recover nickel oxalate with a purity higher than 99.99% by selectively precipitating Ni(II) with the addition of Na2C2O4 as a precipitant.

  • In this paper, we describe the luminescent properties of the phosphors synthesized via sol-gel technique. When the phosphor prepared by sol-gel technique, reaction factors, such as pH condition, $R_w$ and drying temperature affected the luminescent intensity, particle size and morphology of final product. Therefore, we attempt to control these reaction factors in order to improve the luminescent efficiency of phosphors. As a result of our study, when the acid catalyst (HCl) was used, emission intensity was higher than the case of base catalyst $(NH_4OH)$. The product prepared at $R_w=60$ indicated the maximum intensity. As the increase of the $R_w$ value, the particle was agglomerated and emission intensity was decreased. Finally, optimum drying temperature of gel was found to be$ 180^{\circ}C$.

  • Ilmenite is one of the principal ores for the production of titanium dioxide. To produce titanium dioxide with purity higher than 99.9% from ilmenite, Ti(IV) should be separated from the dissolved impurities such as Fe(III), Si(IV), and Mn(II) present in ilmenite. In this work, a hydrometallurgical process was investigated to recover pure titanium dioxide from ilmenite by HCl leaching followed by separation and hydrolysis of Ti(IV). An optimum leaching condition was obtained by investigating the effect of HCl concentration, pulp density, and leaching time on the leaching percentage of Ti(IV), Fe(III), Si(IV), and Mn(II). Ammonium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide solutions were employed as neutralizing agents to hydrolyze Ti(IV) from the stripping solution of Ti(IV). Titanium dioxide of the anatase phase was obtained by calcination of the hydrolyzed precipitates with $NH_4OH$ solution. A hydrometallurgical process can be developed to produce pure $TiO_2$ powders from ilmenite.
