  • Some problems such as toughness decrement and stess relief cracking (SRC), many occur when post weld heat treatment (PWHT) is applied to remove residual stress adn hydrogen. In this paper PWHT was carried out under the stress of 0, 98, 196 and 294 MPa (0, 10, 20 and 30kgf/mm$^{2}$ each) to simulate residual stress in HAZ of Cr-Mo steel. The effect of applied stress during PWHT on fracture toughness was evaluated by COD fracture toughness test, micro-hardnes test and observation of SEM. The experimental results are as follows; (1) Fracture toughness of weld HAZ was improved by PWHT, but it decreased as heat treated under the stress. (2)Hardness ratio under the stress of 294MPa (30kg/mm$^{2}$) was lower and fracture toughness was decreased than that of the no stress. (3) Applied stress in weld HAZ during PWHT assisted precipitation of over saturated alloying elements in the structure, so fracture surface at the stress of 294MPa (30kg/mm$_{2}$) appeared the grain boundary failure possibly one of the reasons for PWHT embrittlenment.

  • In this study, Charpy impact test and numerical studies were performed to examine the effects of failure behavior and energy absorption on the notch position. For this purpose, carbon steel plate(SA-516 Gr. 70) with thickness of 25mm usually used for pressure vessel was welded by SMAW(Shielded Metal-Arc Welding)method and specimens were fabricated from the welded plate. The Charpy impact tests were then performed with specimens having different notch positions varying within HAZ. A series of three-dimensional FE analysis which simulates the Charpy test and crack propagation are carried out as well. We divided HAZ into two, three and four regions to apply mechanical properties of HAZ to FE-analys. Results reveal that the absorbed energies during impact test depend significantly on the notch position. To obtain the results of reliability, HAZ should be divided into at least three regions.

  • During PWHT, it is well known that residual stress in weld HAZ is one of the reasons for PWHT embitterment. In case of static loading, it was experimentally found that fracture toughness of weld HAZ was dependant upon PWHT conditions. However, the effects of PWHT on fatigue behavior are not clearly verified. Therefore, in this paper, the effects of heating rate PWHT conditions and residual stress simulated in weld HAZ of Cr-Mo steel on fatigue crack propagation behavior were evaluated by fatigue Testing and SEM observation. The obtained results are summarized as follows; 1. Applied stress($10 Kgf/mm^2$) in weld HAZ during PWHT tneded to decrease fatigue strength and to increase fatigue crack growth rate. 2. Applied stress and slow heating rate of 60.deg. C/hr during PWHT contributed to precipitin of impurity elements as well as carbide, which promoted the fatigue crack growth. 3. Fatigue crack growth rate decreased at the heating rate of 220.deg. C/hr in contrast with 600.deg. C/hr and 60.deg. C/hr.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope the prediction method of liquation crack initiation in HAZ of laser weldment. Thermal two dimensional strain analyses were performed by FEM for bead-on-plate welding in order to obtain the plastic strain at elevated temperature in HAZ of the laser weldment. From these results, it became clear that the plastic strain at elevated temperature affected liquation crack initiation in HAZ, and it could be proposed that the critical strain, which controlled liquation crack initiation, existed. Moreover, an attempt was made to develop thermal and dynamic three dimensional strain analysis method for the laser weldment in order to obtain the plastic strain at elevated temperature in HAZ of the laser weldment in more detail and precisely.

  • The evaluation of HAZ toughness and cold crack susceptibility of 90mm thickness API 2W Grade 50 steel has been made in accordance with API RP 2Z as preproduction qualification test to be certified as il steel supplier from Shell International E & P. It was shown that the steel has superior HAZ toughness; CTOD value for CGHAZ more than 1.5mm at -10$^{\circ}C$, CVN absorbed energy more than 150J at -60$^{\circ}C$. Additionally, no generation of cold cracks was observed at 0.7kJ/mm even without preheating condition. These excellent results are due to the extremely low hardenability in HAZ of the steel.

  • The effect of heat treatment on the fatigue crack growth behavior in welded joints between the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of SA 508 Cl.3 low-alloy steel and HAZ of AISI 316L stainless steel is investigated. When the crack propagates across SA 508 Cl.3 or AISI 316L SS and HAZ into the weldment, the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in the HAZ region does not change or decrease despite the increase in stress intensity factor ${\Delta}K$. The residual stress at the HAZ region is more compressive than that at the base Δ materials and weldment. The effect of the welding residual stress on the crack growth behavior is determined by performing a residual stress relief heat treatment at $650^{\circ}C$ for 1h and subsequent furnace cooling. The FCG behavior in the HAZ region in the as-welded specimen and the residual stress relief heat-treated specimen is discussed in terms of the welding residual stress.

  • HAZ(Heat Affected Zone of weldm ents) properties were investigated for a high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel with a chemical composition of Fe-0.02C-0.15Si-6.00Mn-10.0Ni-23.0Cr-2.00Mo-0.48N-0.14V. Thermal cycle of HAZ was simulated by the thermal cycle simulator (Gleeble 1500). The heat treatment was applied to the Charpy test size sample without notch under various peak temperatures and/or the holding times condition. V-notch Charpy test was performed at the temperature range of 273~77 K. Metallographic examination also was carried out by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The simulated specimens revealed a slight embrittlement compared with the base materials. The impact toughness of the specimens deteriorated with the decreasing test temperature. The results from Charpy V-notch test, however, showed that significant degradation of absorbed energy caused by brittle fracture was not observed for the specimen tested in the test temperature range.

  • The plastic zone formed around a notch tip is important in analyzing the fracture toughness of structures and particularly weld cracks existed in the weld HAZ (heat affected zone) which produces local plastic deformation at the crack tip. Therefore, in order to analyze the fracture toughness in weld HAZ, it is necessary to investigate the new fracture toughness parameter $K_{c}$ $^{*}$ and critical plastic strain energy $W_{p}$ $^{c}$ according to the shape and size of the plastic zone. 1) If the temperature corresponding to $K_{c}$ $^{*}$=130kg-m $m^{-3}$ 2/ is determined, transition temperature $T_{tr}$ the magnitude of plastic zone size, and heat input change depending on the fracture toughness. The blunted amounts of the parent and weld HAZ show mild linear variation until .delta.=0.4mm and then increase very steeply there after. 2) The relation between the plastic strain energy( $W^{p}$ ) and transition temperature( $T_{*}$tr) in parent metal is more sensitive than that of weld HAZ. However, the plastic strain energy depends on the transition temperature, and thus the yield stress, .sigma.$_{ys}$ becomes an important parameter for plastic strain energy. 3) The critical plastic strain energy( $W_{p}$ $^{c}$ ) absorbed by the plastic zone at the notch tip indicated in case of parent metal: 60J/mm, in case of heat input(20KJ/cm): 75J/mm, in case of heat input(30KJ/cm); 50J/mmJ/mm.

  • Post weld heat treatment(PWHT) of weldment of the low alloy steel is carried out to remove residual stress existing in weldment and to improve fracture toughness, but it is often observed that there occurs grain boundary failure and that fracture toughness decreases in weld heat affected zone(HAZ)because of PWHT. In this paper, the effect of heating rate and holding time of PWHT on fracture toughness were evaluated by crack opening displacement (CDD)test and micro-hardness test under the constant stress simulated residual stress in HAZ of Cr-Mo steel. The experimental results are as follow; (1)Transition temperature of weld HAZ after PWHT was dependent upon heating rate greater than holding time, and fracture toughness was decreased with an increase of the heating rate. (2)Softening ration of the notch tip was increased with holding time within one hour and saturated after one hour, but under applied stress it was increasing continuously. (3)The average hardness value in weld HAZ was increased with heating rate of PWHT.

  • The paper presents the characteristics of mechanical properties within the heat affected zone (HAZ) of dissimilar metal weld between SA508 Gr.1a and F316 stainless steel (SS) with Alloy 82/182 filler metal. Tensile tests were performed using small-size specimens taken from the HAZ regions close to both fusion lines of weld, and the micro-structures were examined using optical microscope (OM) and transmission microscope (TEM). The results showed that significant gradients of the yield stress (YS), ultimate tensile stress (UTS), and elongations were observed within the HAZ of SA508 Gr.1a. This was attributed to the different microstructures within the HAZ. In the HAZ of F316 SS, however, the welding effect dominated the YS and elongation rather than UTS, and TEM micrographs conformed the strengthening in the HAZ of F316 SS was associated with a dislocation-induced strain hardening.
