Comparison of Heavy Metal Concentration and Reproduction of Feral Pigeons (Columba livia) between Urban and Industrial Complex Areas from Korea

  • Pb and Cd concentrations and reproductive progress of feral pigeons were investigated in urban (Seoul) and industrial complex (Ansan) areas from November 2000 to May 2001. Results of the Pb analysis for the feral pigeons from the Ansan industrial complex (egg contents: 1.13 $\mu$g/wet g, bones of adult: 10.5 $\mu$g/wet g) and Seoul (1.64 $\mu$g/wet g, 29.5 $\mu$g/wet g, respectively) indicated that the Pb level of eggs and bones of adults were significantly different between the two colonies (p<0.05). Cd concentrations in liver and kidney of adult pigeons were also significantly different between the Ansan (liver: 0.14 $\mu\textrm{g}$/wet g, kidney: 0.43 $\mu$g/wet g) and Seoul (liver. 0.24 $\mu$g/wet g, kidney: 1.05 $\mu$g/wet g) colonies. (p<0.05). However, egg size and thickness, incubation period and nestling growth rates did not differ between the study areas. Also, clutch size, number of young hatched per nest and number of young fledglings per nest did not significantly different in the noted areas. Considering the lead and cadmium concentrations of pigeons, these were not as high as those considered as results in toxic effects in other species, and the biological significance from these level differences is uncertain.

Screening for Herbs Having Inhibitory Effect on Egg Hatching of Strongyloides venezuelensis

  • In vitro bioassays of aqueous extracts of 25 herbal species were performed by ovicidal activity against Strongvloides venuelensis. 500 mg of feces from Mongorian gerbil infected with S. venuelensis were placed into polyvinyl culture with extracts of herb and anthelmintic drugs in triplicates. Larval activity inside the polyvinyl bag was recorded microscopically at 12 hours, and every 24 hours thereafter for up to 72 hrs incubation. Eggs were not hatched within 72 hrs and degeneration was evident in the presence of extracts. The ovicidal activity characterized by the absence of L$_3$ in fecal cultures inside the polyvinyl bag. 1. Among 25 herbs, 12 herbs had ovicidal effects and caused degeneration of larvae in egg. S. angustifolia, I. helenium, A. korenum, P. tenuifolia, F. virridissima, A. asiatica, S. chinensis, A. tataricus, S. baicalensis, M. rimosa, S. glabra and Z. piperitum were the most ovicidal effect. However, P. thunbergiana, T. chinensis, C. flos, G. uralensis, C. obutusifolia, C. fortunei, A. koreana, P. grandiflorum, P. tenuifolia (Radix), P. mume and A. asphodelodes showed no ovicidal effects in vinyl bag culture. 2. Of 25 hrebs, 4 herbs had ovicidal and wormicidal effects, P. thunbergiana, C. flos, B. Striata and T. chinensis were characterized by degeneration of larvae.

서해안 송도매립지에서 번식하는 검은머리갈매기의 현황과 번식생태 (Breeding Status and Ecology of Saunders' Gulls (Larus saundersi) in Songdo Reclaimed Land, West Coast of Korea)

  • Saunders' gulls (Laurs saundersi) which are listed as globally vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List are distributed in East Asia and breed mainly in China and Korea. Their population is estimated to be between 7,100 to 9,600. Songdo reclaimed lands in the western coast of South Korea are the main breeding sites for these species. However, most of these breeding sites have been seriously disturbed in the last several years because of new urban development constructions. This study was conducted to provide baseline data on the breeding ecology of Saunders' gulls. Since 1998, the breeding population has rapidly increased in South Korea, with the number of nests rising from 85 nests in 2000 to 185 nests in 2005. Egg volume is more variable than breadth or length. Clutch size, hatching and breeding success were $2.9{\pm}0.81$ (n=182, mean$\pm$sd.), 48.07% (75 hatched egg/156 eggs) and 29.08% (155 fledglings/533 eggs), respectively. Factors affecting breeding failure were predation, rainfall, starvation and supernormal clutches. These results are provided along with other cited literature to argue for conservation of Saunders' gulls.

  • The egg development and early life history of Korean spotted sleeper, Odontobutis interrupta which is Korean endemic species from Sora-choen was investigated. The Korean spotted sleeper were caught at Sora-myeon, Yeosu-si, Jeollanamdo, from Korea at May in 2014. The fertilized eggs were $4.23{\pm}0.05mm$ in long diameter and had oil globules. Hatching time of the embryo began about 442 hr 14 min after fertilization under water temperature of $19.5^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were $4.27{\pm}0.35mm$ in total length and their anus were not yet opened. 3 days after hatching postlarvae was measured $6.20{\pm}0.11mm$ in total length. 10 days after hatching postlarvae was measured $6.69{\pm}0.14mm$ in total length.

등줄숭어, Chelon affinis(Gunther)의 난발생 및 자어의 형태발달 (Egg and Larval Development of Chelon affinis by Artificial Treatment in Aquarium)

  • 1997년 3월에 부산시 민락동 어시장에서 채집한 등줄숭어 어미들을 실험실로 운반하여 인위적인 방법으로 난을 수정시킨 후, 난의 형태, 난발생과정 및 자어의 성장에 따른 형태변화를 관찰하였다. 1. 등줄숭어의 수정란은 무색투명한 원형의 분리부성란으로, 난경은 0.95$\~$1.06mm이고 부화에 소요된 시간은 수정후 $16.0^{\circ}C$에서 73시 간이였다. 2. 부화 직후의 자어는 전장 1.72$\~$1.92mm로 입과 항문은 열리지 않고, 근절은 19개로 아직 정수에 달하지 않았으며, 몸에는 막대기 모양의 흑색소포가 산재한다. 3. 부화후 5일째의 자어는 전장 2.27$\~$2.49mm로 입이 최초로 열리며 동시에 난황이 완전히 흡수되어 후기자어로 이행한다.

각시붕어(Rhodeus uyekii)와 흰줄납줄개(Rhodeus ocellatus) 잡종의 초기생활사 특징 (Early Life History Characteristics of an Induced Hybrid between Rhodeus uyekii and Rhodeus ocellatus)

  • This study was conducted to identify taxonomic differences in the characteristics of Rhodeus uyekii and Rhodeus ocellatus during their initial life history via an interspecific hybridization experiment. Hybrids were compared to their parent species, and the findings were used to inform developmental research in commercially useful aquarium fish. The hatching rates of the cross-bred eggs were 75.9% for cross UO (R. uyekii ♀${\times}$R. ocellatus♂) and 71.9% for cross OU (R. ocellatus♀${\times}$R. uyekii♂), which did not differ greatly from the hatching rates of the normal cross-bred group. Backcross experiments resulted in 100% egg mortality during development. Newly hatched larvae of the original hybrid crosses were similar to those of the maternal line, and the color of the egg yolk was similar to that of the paternal line; therefore, the respective traits of the interspecific parents were identifiable within the cross-bred offspring.

넙치 및 돌돔 자어 사육에 있어서 Brachionus plicatilis와 B. rotundiformis 내구란에서 갓 부화한 rotifer의 먹이효율 (Dietary Value of Neonates from Rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis and B. rotundiformis Resting Eggs for Flounder and Parrot Fish Larvae)

  • 넙치(Paralichthy olivaceus) 및 돌돔 (Oplegnathusfasciatus) 자어를 대상으로 각각 B.plicatilis와 B.rotundiformis의 내구란에서 갓 부화한 rotifer의 먹이효율과 지방산 조성을 대량배양한 rotifer와 비교 조사하였다. Rotifer 내구란은 Chlorella와 빵 효모를 먹이로 공급하여 $1~4m^3$에서 생산하였다. B.plicatilis와 B.rotundiformis 내구란은 $5^{\circ}C$ 암내장 상태에서 각각 3개월과 5개월 동안 보관하여 $28^{\circ}C$ 연속 조명하에서 부화시켰다. 내구란에서 갓 부화한 rotifer와 대량 배양한 rotifer(대조구)를 자어에게 공급하였다. B.rotundiformis 내구란에서 갓 부화한 rotifer를 공급한 돌돔자어의 성장과 생존률은 대조구와 비슷하였게 나타났고, B.plicatilis 내구란에서 갓 부화한 rotifer를 먹은 넙치자어의성장과 생존률은 각각 대조구에 비해 비슷하거나 높게 나타났다. 또한 내구란에서 갓 부화한 rotifer의 지방산조성은 대조구와 비슷하게 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과를 볼 때 내구란에서 갓 부화한 rotifer는 넙치 및 돌돔 자어의 먹이로서 이용 가능하다고 판단된다.

멸종위기에 처한 얼룩새코미꾸리 Koreocobitis naktongensis (Cobitidae)의 난 발생 및 자치어 형태 발달 (Morphological Development of Egg and Larvae of Koreocobitis naktongensis (Cobitidae))

  • 멸종위기 담수어류인 얼룩새코미꾸리 Koreocobitis naktongensis의 난 발생 과정 및 자치어 형태 발달을 조사하였다. 인간 융모성 성선자극호르몬(HCG)을 10 IU/g의 농도로 암컷의 복강에 주사하여 성숙란을 얻었으며, 건식법으로 정자와 수정시켰다. 수정란의 난경은 1.0~1.2 mm로 유구는 존재하지 않았다. 배체는 수온 $20{\pm}1^{\circ}C$에서 수정 38시간 후부터 부화하기 시작하였다. 부화 직후 자어의 전장은 2.5~2.8 mm로 입과 항문은 아직 열리지 않았다. 부화 후 7일째 자어는 전장 4.5~5.2 mm로 난황은 완전히 흡수되었다. 부화 후 50일째 모든 지느러미가 완성되는 치어기로 이행하였고, 이때의 전장은 21~27 mm였다.

위천에 서식하는 피라미(Zacco platypus)의 난 발생 및 초기생활사 (Eggs Development and Early Life History of Pale Chub, Zacco platypus from Wicheon)

  • 피라미의 수정란을 부화 사육하여 난 발생 및 자치어 형태발달을 관찰하였다. 실험어는 2016년 6월 낙동강 수계인 위천에서 어미를 포획하여 인공수정 하였다. 난의 크기는 1.68~1.78 mm (평균${\pm}$SD, $1.73{\pm}0.07mm$, n=30)였고, 부화 시간은 70시간이 소요되었다. 부화 직후 자어는 전장 5.39~5.42 mm ($5.40{\pm}0.02mm$, n=10)였고, 부화 후 8일째 후기 자어는 전장 7.89~7.93 mm ($7.91{\pm}0.02mm$, n=10)로 꼬리지느러미에 10개의 줄기가 형성되었으며, 부화 후 44일째 치어는 전장 16.1~16.5 mm ($16.3{\pm}0.28mm$, n=10)로 각 부위별 지느러미 줄기수가 정수에 달하였다.

온도가 두줄명아주노린재의 발육에 미치는 영향 (곤충망, 매미목, 명아주노린재과) (Effect of Temperature on the Development of the Ash-gray Leaf Bug, Piesma maculata (Insecta, Hemiptera, Piesmatidae))

  • The authors reared the ash-gray leaf bug, Piesma maculata in the growth cabinet controlled as temperature groups of $15, 20, 25, 30, 40^{\circ}C$under condition of photoperiod 16L:8D, light intensity $510{\pm}240$ lus, relative humidity $65{\pm}3%$, and analyzed the effects of temperature on the development of the insect. The results are summarized as follow: There are highly significant differences the developmental periods for the temperature groups, and between the developmental periods for the developmental stages. The egg in the temperature of 15 and $40^{\circ}C$ was hatched, but the ecdysis was impossible. The thermal threshold was $12.34^{\circ}C$and the upper lethal temperature $40.39^{\circ}C$. The total developmental periods of egg to adulate in the temperature of 20, 25, 30 and $35^{\circ}C$are 40.52, 22.37, 15.91 and 13.00 days, respectively. That is, the developmental period was decreased, as the temperature was increased. In the developmental period for the developmental stages, the developmental period of egg stage was longer than that of 25, 30 and $35^{\circ}C$, and that of 25。C was longer than that of $35^{\circ}C$. But ther was not significant differences between the developmental periods for the other temperature group. The rate of hatch at$20^{\circ}C$is the greater value as 90%, and the rates of 25, 30 and $35^{\circ}C$ are 79, 79 and 67%, respectively. That is the rate of hatch was decreased, as the temperature was increased. The mortality in the temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ is the greatest value as 68%, and those of 30, 25 and $20^{\circ}C$are 59, 59 and 41%, respectively. That is, the mortality was increased, as the temperature was increased. There was not significantly differences between the developmental period of female and male.
