Although Pacific mackerel (Scomber japonicus) is an important commercial species in Korea, its recruitment mechanism remains largely unknown. Diel vertical positioning of larvae in the water column, which is affected by their specific gravity and the surrounding water density, may help to provide an understanding on recruitment success through predator avoidance and prey availability. The specific gravity measurement on Pacific mackerel eggs and larvae would seem to be essential information necessary to learn about the transport process from spawning to nursery grounds, and consequently the recruitment success. Eggs were artificially fertilized, and larvae were fed with rotifer when their mouths opened 3-4 days after hatching. We conducted the experiment using a density gradient water column to measure the ontogenetic changes in specific gravity from fertilization to 10 days after hatching. Egg specific gravity was stable during most of the embryonic period, but a sudden increase to $1.0249g\;cm^{-3}$ happened just before hatching. However, the specific gravity of newly hatched larvae was much lighter ($1.0195g\;cm^{-3}$), and specific gravity tended to increase continuously after hatching. Comparison of specific gravity with seawater density reveals that eggs and newly hatched larvae can float in the surface layer of the ocean. For the later period of the experiment, the specific gravity showed a cyclic diel pattern: the highest in the evening while the lowest at dawn. The fullness of larval stomach may be responsible for the observed differences in specific gravity, because stomach fullness was lower (40-60%) at midnight, and higher (80-85%) in evening. The diel pattern of specific gravity might provide clues regarding how larvae match the diel vertical migration of prey organisms.
This study was carried out to determine the optimal water temperature for the embryonic development and laboratory culture of larvae of an intertidal mud snail, Nassarius festivus. The embryos and hatched veliger larvae of N. festivus were incubated at six different temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and $30^{\circ}C$). Developmental time for each stage decreased as water temperature increased. The elapsed time to develop to the veliger larva at 15, 20, 25 and $30^{\circ}C$ was 559, 155, 131 and 103 hrs, respectively. At 5 and $10^{\circ}C$, embryo developed to veliger larvae but failed to hatch out of the egg capsule. In contrast, all embryos successfully hatched in the temperature range from 15 to $30^{\circ}C$. The biological minimum temperature during the embryonic development of N. festivus was estimated to be $9.5{\pm}0.4^{\circ}C$. The cumulative water temperatures for blastula, gastrula and veliger stages were calculated as $111{\pm}84$, $486{\pm}185$, $1,164{\pm}72^{\circ}C$, respectively. Temperature also affected the larval survival. Five days after hatching, more than 84% of larvae survived at all experimental temperatures. However, survival began to decrease after 6 days. It was 0% at $30^{\circ}C$. Survival of larvae incubated for 8 days was higher at 15 and $20^{\circ}C$ than other experimental temperatures. We therefore suggest that the optimal range of temperature for embryonic development and larval survival of N. festivus is $15-20^{\circ}C$.

The hatching rate of the eggs of Nannophya pygmaea Rambur, an endangered dragonfly species in Korea, was experimented in different temperature conditions ($10,\;15,\;20,\;25,\;and\;30^{\circ}C$) in laboratory. N. pygmaea eggs were collected from female adults inhabited a small wetland in Mungyong-si, Kyeongsangbuk-do, Korea, in July 2006. The hatching rate was evaluated from the number of hatched nymphs for the period of 100 days. As a result, the hatching rates were 83, 89, and 76% at $20,\;25,\;and\;30^{\circ}C$, respectively; however, eggs were not hatched at $10^{\circ}C\;and\;15^{\circ}C$ during the experiment period. The derived thermal threshold for egg hatching was $14.3^{\circ}C$, which is relatively higher than the values of other temperate dragonflies.
The effects of dark-control (D) and continuous green light (GL) exposure of incubated meat-type breeder eggs (Hybro) on embryonic growth from 5 to 15 days of age, hatching time, hatchability per cent and chick hatching weight were investigated in three consecutive experiments at 33, 38, and 41 weeks of age. A total of 798 eggs were used in this study. Eggs were set in an incubator on trays either in the D or under two tubes of 20-watt green fluorescent light during the first 18 days of incubation. Eggs from both treatments were transferred to the dark hatching compartment at 19 days of incubation. The light intensity was in the range of 1,340 to 1,730 lux at the surface of the eggs. GL incubation of eggs significantly (p<0.01) increased weight (expressed as an absolute value) and daily weight gain of embryos at 11 and continued to 15 days of age, hatchability per cent by 4.8%, reduced dead embryos per cent and chick weight at hatch by 37 and 2%, respectively and accelerated hatching time by about 24 h when compared with the D-control incubation. Chicks hatched at 504 h of incubation had significantly (p<0.01) higher body weight, expressed as an absolute value or as a percentage of egg weight, than those hatched earlier at 456 h of incubation. It was concluded that the GL incubation of meat breeder eggs reduced incubation period and chick weight at hatch and increased embryonic growth and hatchability per cent.
Objective: Heat stress poses an increasing threat for poultry production. Some amino acids have been found to play critical roles in affording thermotolerance. Recently, it was found that in ovo administration of L-leucine (L-Leu) altered amino acid metabolism and afforded thermotolerance in heat-exposed broiler chicks. Methods: In this study, two doses (35 and $70{\mu}mol/egg$) of L-Leu were administered in ovo on embryonic day 7 to determine their effect on rectal temperature (RT), body weight (BW) and thyroid hormones at hatching. Changes in RT, BW, and thermotolerance in post-hatched chicks were also analyzed. Results: It was found that in ovo administration of L-Leu dose-dependently reduced RT and plasma thyroxine ($T_4$) level just after hatching. In post-hatched neonatal broiler chicks, however, the higher dose of L-Leu administered in ovo significantly increased RT without affecting BW gain. In chicks that had been exposed to heat stress, the RT was significantly lowered by in ovo administration of L-Leu (high dose) in comparison with the control chicks under the same high ambient temperature (HT: $35^{\circ}C{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, 120 min). Conclusion: In ovo administration of L-Leu in a high dose contributed to an increased daily body temperature and afforded thermotolerance under HT in neonatal broiler chicks.
This study was conducted to determine whether the difference in egg hatching temperature of Korea Reeves' turtle (Mauremys reevesii) at the artificial nursery of Seoul National Grand Park affects the incubation period and growth. A total of 201 eggs were incubated at 26 ℃ (n=89), 28 ℃ (n=75) and 32 ℃ (n=37). The incubation period of eggs showed significant differences according to the hatching temperature. In this study, the higher the hatching temperature, the higher the hatching rate. The incubation period of the eggs hatched at 26 ℃, 28 ℃ and 32 ℃ was 66.1 (±4.0, n = 52) days, 65.3 (±3.3, n = 44) days and 58.8 (±7.7, n = 31) days, respectively. Eggs incubated at 32 ℃ (83.8%) had a higher hatching success than those at 26 ℃ (58.4%) and 28 ℃ (58.7%). The body mass of 14-day-old hatchlings incubated at 32 ℃ was greater than those incubated at 26 ℃ and 28 ℃. However, there was no significant difference in the mean body mass of 180 and 270-day-old turtles hatched at these different temperatures. This study showed that the hatching temperature significantly affected the incubation period and body mass in the early life of the Korea Reeves' turtle (M. reevesii).
Formerly, adult-tiger puffer, Takifugu rubripes with ova caught in the sea, were used for seedling production. But it was difficult to secure naturally-ripened adults. For the purpose of adult tiger puffer in captivity, this study was carried out. To determine the growth 220 tiger puffers hatched in 1990 (3-year-old) and 1991 (2-year-old) were used. For spawning and egg incubation leading to fry development, eggs were stripped from tiger puffers hatched in 1988 (5-year-old) and 1990 (3-year-old) through human chorionic gonadotropin (BCG) treatments. In May, 1993, mean body length and mean body weight of 2-year-old tiger puffer were $30.72\pm1.35cm\;and\;1,048\pm228 g,$ and that of 3-year-old tiger puffers were $36.02\pm1.17cm$ and $1,402\pm66g$ respectively. The relationship between body length (L) and body weight (W) of 2-year-old the tiger puffers during the experiment period was represented as $W\;=\;1.7892L^{31524}\times10^5$ (r= 0.9436) and that of 3-year-old, $W=\;3.2840L^{36099}\times10^6$ (r= 0.9070) respectively. The GSI in female 2-year-old-fish changed from $0.23\times0.l2\;to\;0.74\pm0.08$, during the experiment period, and in male it didn't change remarkably until November, but thereafter it increased and showed a peak of $8.69\pm5.09$. The GSI of 3-year-old-fish showed a peak of $8.05\pm5.58$ in April in female and $12.65\pm4.60$ in May in male. The change of HSI in 3-year-old-fish was correlative to the change of GSI, but in 2-year-old-fish it was little correlative. In female gonad of 2-year-old tiger puffer, the mature oocytes reached $350{\mu}m$ in April, but thereafter they didn't spawn and became atrophied. But in male gonad, a great number of spermatozoa were crowded in the testicular lobuli in April. Female gonad of 3-year-old tiger puffer had the mature oocytes of 650 pm in March and the ripe oocytes, $900{\mu}m$ in April. Male testis development was similar to that of 2-year-old-fish. Egg-stripping after hormone treatments was possible past 139 hours and 142 hours from each of two 5-year-old-fish (500IU/kg, BW), and after 114 hour from a 3-year-old-fish (1,000 IU/kg, BW) under water temperature $16.3\~17.8^{\circ}C$. Eggs stripped amounted was 650 g and 400 g from two 5-year-old-fish and 610 g from the 3-year-old-fish, and fertilization rates were $98.0\%,\;97.4\%\;and\;96.5\%$ respectively. All the hatched larvae devloped into normal fry.

Egg development and early life history of the endangered Korean freshwater fish, Microphysogobio koreensis, was investigated to get a basic information for establishing its conservation strategy. The matured adult fishes were sampled at Imsil-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea in May 1 2012 and artificially fertilized. The fertilized eggs were spherical, separated demersal and $1.8{\pm}0.14mm$ in diameter. The hatching of the embryo began at about 29 hours after fertilization under water temperature of $23^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched pre-larvae were average $2.2{\pm}0.48mm$ in total length. At 4 days after hatching, the post-larvae were $3.6{\pm}0.55mm$ in total length and york sac was completely absorbed. At 20 days after hatching, their fin rays were formed and finally the larvae entered juvenile stage and grew up to $6.5{\pm}0.77mm$ in total length. At 60 days after hatching, the total length reached $24.4{\pm}1.71mm$, and the band patterns of he head and lateral side were similar to adult fish. Based on this study, the fertilized eggs of M. koreensis hatched more quickly and the pre-larvae length was also smaller, compared with related species.
The fish and attached fish eggs by artificial floating island in lake Soyang was investigation from May to June 2013. The observed fish at the floating island during the survey period were Zacco platypus (5.2 %), Siniperca scherzeri (1.0 %), Lepomis macrochirus (90.8 %) and Micropterus salmoides (3.0 %) at the Cheongpyeong-ri, Cyprinus carpio (0.4 %), Z. platypus (54.6 %), L. macrochirus (20.3 %) and M. salmoides (24.7 %) at the Ungjin-ri. The collected species at the neighboring facility were 22 species belonging the seven families. Among them, exotic species such as Carassius cuvieri, L. macrochirus and M. salmoides. Also, Z. platypus (30.4 %), L. macrochirus (18.9 %), Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis (15.4 %) and Hemibarbus labeo (9.3 %) were numberous. Attached fish eggs number were 708,800 (800 per $m^2$) at the Cheongpyeong-ri and 974,500 (1,100 per $m^2$) at the Ungjin-ri. The fish eggs number were 504,920 of the Carassius auratus (212,640 at the Cheongpyeong-ri, 292,280 at the Ungjin-ri) and 1,178,380 of the C. carpio (496,160 at the Cheongpyeong-ri, 682,220 at the Ungjin-ri). The hatched eggs number were 350,505 of the C. auratus(102,067 at the Cheongpyeong-ri, 248,438 at the Ungjin-ri) and 811,222 of the C. carpio (238,157 at the Cheongpyeong-ri, 573,065 at the Ungjin-ri).

In order to monitor the developmental features of embryos, larvae, and juveniles of chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus, the fertilized eggs were obtained by artificial insemination. The fertilized eggs were spherical in shape and floated separately. Their membrane and yolk having 1 oil globule were transparent. The transparent eggs, having one oil drop in the yolk, were $0.94{\sim}1.02\;mm$ (mean, $0.95{\pm}0.03\;mm$) in diameter. The fertilized eggs started hatching at 51 hrs after fertilization in $20{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ water. The total length of the hatched larvae was $2.52{\sim}3.0\;mm$ (mean, $2.75{\pm}0.04\;mm$). At hatching, the larva, with the mouth and anus not opened yet, had yolk sack, $28{\sim}31$ myomeres and eyes with melanophore. Yolk completely 2 days after hatching and the total length of post-larvae $3.12{\sim}3.63\;mm$ (mean, $3.39{\pm}0.05\;mm$). At the 18 days after hatching, the tip of tail became curved at the end and the stems for pectoral, dorsal, and caudal fins appeared. Juveniles, having all firm rays, was $44.12{\sim}58.72\;mm$ (mean $55.95{\pm}6.74\;mm$) in TL 25 days after hatching.
