PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface properties and in vitro bioactivity to osteoblasts of magnesium and magnesium-hydroxyapatite coated titanium. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Themagnesium (Mg) and magnesium-hydroxyapatite (Mg-HA) coatings on titanium (Ti) substrates were prepared by radio frequency (RF) and direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering. The samples were divided into non-coated smooth Ti (Ti-S group), Mg coatinggroup (Ti-Mg group), and Mg-HA coating group (Ti-MgHA group). The surface properties were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface roughness was evaluated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Cell adhesion, cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were evaluated using MC3T3-E1 cells. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis was performed. RESULTS. Cross-sectional SEM images showed that Mg and Mg-HA depositionson titanium substrates were performed successfully. The surface roughness appeared to be similaramong the three groups. Ti-MgHA and Ti-Mg group had improved cellular responses with regard to the proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and bone-associated markers, such as bone sialoprotein (BSP) and osteocalcin (OCN) mRNA compared to those of Ti-S group. However, the differences between Ti-Mg group and Ti-MgHA group were not significant, in spite of the tendency of higher proliferation, ALP activity and BSP expression in Ti-MgHA group. CONCLUSION. Mg and Mg-HAcoatings could stimulate the differentiation into osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells, potentially contributing to rapid osseointegration.
The dental implant materials required good mechanical properties, such as fatigue strength, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. For increasing fatigue resistance and delaying onset of stress corrosion cracking, shot peening has been used for > 50 years to extend service life of metal components. However, there is no information on the electrochemical behavior of shot peened and hydroxyapatite(HA) coated Ti-6Al-4V alloys. To increase fatigue strength, good corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility, the electrochemical characteristics of Ti/TiN/HA coated and shot peened Ti-6Al-4V alloys by electron beam physical vapor deposition(EB-PVD) have been researched by various electrochemical method in 0.9%NaCl. Ti-6Al-4V alloys were prepared under the condition of hydrogen and vacuum arc furnace. The produced materials were quenched at 1000$^{\circ}C$ under high purity dried Ar atmosphere and were hold at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs to achieve the fatigue strength(1140㎫) of materials. Ti-6Al-4V alloys were prepared under the condition of hydrogen and vacuum arc furnace. Shot peening(SP) and sand blasting treatment was carried out for 1, 5, and 10min. On the surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloys using the steel balls of 0.5mm and alumina sand of 40$\mu\textrm{m}$ size. Ti/TiN/HA multilayer coatings were carried out by using electron-beam deposition method(EB-PVD) as shown Fig. 1. Bulk Ti, powder TiN and hydroxyapatite were used as the source of the deposition materials. Electrons were accelerated by high voltage of 4.2kV with 80 - 120mA on the deposition materials at 350$^{\circ}C$ in 2.0 X 10-6 torr vacuum. Ti/TiN/HA multilayer coated surfaces and layers were investigated by SEM and XRD. A saturated calomel electrode as a reference electrode, and high density carbon electrode as a counter electrode, were set according to ASTM GS-87. The potentials were controlled at a scan rate of 100 mV/min. by a potentiostat (EG&G Co.273A) connected to a computer system. Electrochemical tests were used to investigate the electrochemical characteristics of Ti/TiN/HA coated and shot peened materials in 0.9% NaCl solution at 36.5$^{\circ}C$. After each electrochemical measurement, the corrosion surface of each sample was investigated by SEM.
Ag spot-coated Cu nanopowders were synthesized by a hydrothermal-attachment method (HA) using oleic acid capped Ag hydrosol. Cu nano powders were synthesized by pulsed wire exploding method using 0.4 mm in diameter of Cu wire (purity 99.9%). Synthesized Cu nano powders are seen with comparatively spherical shape having range in 50 nm to 150 nm in diameter. The oleic acid capped Ag hydrosol was synthesized by the precipitation-redispersion method. Oleic acid capped Ag nano particles showed the narrow size distribution and their particle size were less than 20 nm in diameter. In the case of nano Ag-spot coated Cu powders, nanosized Ag particles were adhered in the copper surface by HAA method. The components of C, O and Ag were distributed on the surface of copper powder.
In this paper, the surface modification effect of self-assembled monolayer(SAM) of 1-dodecanethiol [$CH_3$($CH_2$)$_{11}$SH] used as an anti-adhesive film in micromolding process was studied. Monolayers of 1-dodecanethiol[$CH_3$(CH$_2$)$_{11}$SH] were obtained by immersing a metal place in pure 1-dodecanethiol. SAM film on the nickel plate has been examined by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The focus has been placed on S-Ni bonding. From the XPS analysis, sulfur atoms were detected from the SAM film as a chemical composition of S-Ni. In order to measure an adhesion force of the SAM-coated nickel surface, atomic force microscopy(AFM) was used in force-distance mode, which whows the micro-adhesive force on solid surface. It was shown that adhesion forces measured from the SAM-coated nickel surface and the Ni surface without SAM coating were 3.52nN and 5.32nN, respectively. In order to investigate the effect of SAM coating on the surface foughness the replica in demolding process, hot embossing experiments were performed using a SAM-coated nickel master and a nickel master without SAM coating. Surface roughness of replica from the SAM-coated master showed 25nm and that of replica from master without SAM coating was 35nm. The smoother surface roughness of the replica from the SAM-coated, master is believed to result from reduction in the adhesion forces.ces.
Pulsed Nd : YAG laser has been used to treat various soft tissue lesions. However, there have been warnings of using laser to treat peri-implantitis because the laser can alter the surface of implant and can rise its temperature so that it might be harmful to implant itself and its surrounding tissue. However, the study in vivo has not been done yet. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility to the pulsed Nd:YAG lased dental implant. 16 HA coated implants and 16 titanium plasma sprayed implants were used. They were divided 4 groups as unlased control, 0.3 watt, 1.0 watt and 2.0 watt lased groups after lasing. And they were implanted in the peritonial walls of 12 rabbits. The rabbits were sacrificed 6 weeks after implantation and the LM and EM specimems were made. 1. In the unlased implant group, both HA coated and titanium plasma sprayed implants were surrounded by fibroblasts and collagen fibers. No macrophages and inflammatory cells were seen. 2. In HA coated implants 0.3 watt, 1.0 watt lased group had a little inflammation, but in 2.0 watt lased group had scattered macrophages, a significantly larger number of chronic imflammatory cells were seen. 3. In titanium plasma sprayed implant 0.3 watt, 1.0 watt lased group had a little inflammation, but in 2.0 watt group had severe inflammation as in the conditions of HA coated group. 4. The inflammatory reaction of both lased HA coated and titanium plasma sprayed implant groups increased as the increase of the power of the laser.

In this study, the rate of bone formation and the pattern of bone to implant contact surface around HA coated implant and pure Ti implant inserted into the irradiated tibia of rabbit were compared. Sixteen mongrel mature male rabbits were used as experimental animal. Each rabbit received 15 Gy of irradiation. Four weeks after irradiation, two holes were prepared on the tibia of each rabbit for placement of HA coated type and pure Ti type implants. Prior to implant placement, one group received steroid irrigation and the control group was similarly irrigated with normal saline. This was immediately followed by placement of the two different types of implants. Postoperatively, tetracycline was injected intramuscularly for 3 days. For fluorescent labelling, 3 days of intramuscular alizarine red injection was given. 2 weeks before sacrifice, followed by intramuscular calcein green on the last 3 days before specimen collection. Each rabbit was sacrificed on the second, fourth, sixth and eighth week after the implantation. The specimens were observed by the light microscope and the fluorescent microscope. The results were as follows; 1. All implants inserted into the irradiated tibia of rabbit were free from clinical mobility and no signs of bony resorption were noted around the site of implant placement. 2. Under the light microscope, new bone formation proceeded faster around implants that received steroid irrigation compared to the control group irrigated with saline. Bone to implant contact surface was greater in the steroid irrigated group than the saline irrigated group. Therefore, better initial stabilization was observed in the group pretreated with steroid irrigation. 3. Under the light microscope. HA coated implants showed broader bone to implant contact surface than pure Ti implants, and HA coated implants had better bone healing pattern than pure Ti implants. 4. In the steroid pretreated group, acceleration of bone formation was demonstrated by fluorescent microscopy around the 2, 4 weeks group and the 6 weeks HA coated implant group. The difference in the rate of bone formation proved to be statistically significant(P<0.05). Faster bone formation was noted in the saline irrigated group in the 6 weeks pure Ti implants and 8 weeks group. The difference was not statistically significant(P<0.05). 5. For the rabbits that were sacrificed on the second and fourth week after the implant placements, the rates of bone formation around HA coated implants proceeded faster than those around pure Ti implants under the fluorescent microscopy. For the rabbits that were sacrificed on the sixth week after the implant placements, the rates of bone formation around pure Ti implants proceeded faster than those around HA coated implants under the fluorescent microscopy. But this result did not show statistical significance (P<0.05) For the rabbits that were sacrificed on the eighth week after the implant placements, the rates of bone formation around HA coated implants proceeded faster than those around pure Ti implants under the fluorescent microscopy. This result was statistically significant (P<0.05).

Purpose: This study compared the effects of coating implants with hydroxyapatite (HA) using an ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) method prepared with machined, anodized, sandblasted and large-grit acid etched (SLA) surfaces in minipigs, and verified the excellency of coating method with HA using IBAD. Material and Methods: 4 male Minipigs(Prestige World Genetics, Korea), 18 to 24 months old and weighing approximately 35 to 40 kg, were chosen. All premolars and first molars of the maxilla were carefully extracted on each side. The implants were placed on the right side after an 8 week healing period. The implant stability was assessed by resonance frequency analysis (RFA) at the time of placement. 40 implants were divided into 5 groups; machined, anodized, anodized plus IBAD, SLA, and SLA plus IBAD surface implants. 4 weeks after implantation on the right side, the same surface implants were placed on the left side. After 4 weeks of healing, the minipigs were sacrificed and the implants were analyzed by RFA, histology and histometric. Results: RFA showed a mean implant stability quotient (ISQ) of $75.625{\pm}5.021$, $76.125{\pm}3.739$ ISQ and $77.941{\pm}2.947$ at placement, after 4 weeks healing and after 8 weeks, respectively. Histological analysis of the implants demonstrated newly formed, compact, mature cortical bone with a nearby marrow spaces. HA coating was not separated from the HA coated implant surfaces using IBAD. In particular, the SLA implants coated with HA using IBAD showed better contact osteogenesis. Statistical and histometric analysis showed no significant differences in the bone to implant contact and bone density among 5 tested surfaces. Conclusion: We can conclude that rough surface implants coated with HA by IBAD are more biocompatible, and clinical, histological, and histometric analysis showed no differences when compared with the other established implant surfaces in normal bone.
Statement of problem: Dental magnetic materials have been applied to removable prosthetic appliances, maxillofacial prostheses, obturator and dental implant but they still have some problems such as low corrosion resistance in oral environments. Purpose: To increase the corrosion resistance of dental magnetic materials, surfaces of Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were plated with TiN and sealed with stainless steels. Materials and methods : Surfaces of Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were plated with TiN and sealed with stainless steels, and then three kinds of electrochemical corrosion test were performed in 0.9% NaCl solution; potentiodynamic, potentiostatic, and electrochemical impedance test. From this study, corrosion behavior, amount of elements released, mean average surface roughness values, the changing of retention force, and magnetic force values were measured comparing with control group of non-coated magnetic materials. Results: The values of surface roughness of TiN coated Sm-Co and TiN coated Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were lower than those of non coated Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B alloy. From results of potentiodynamic test, the passive current density of TiN coated Sm-Co alloy were smaller than those of TiN coated Nd-Fe-B alloy and non coated alloys in 0.9% NaCl solution. From results of potentiostatic and electrochemical impedance test, the surface stability of the TiN coated Sm-Co alloy was more drastically increased than that of the TiN coated Nd-Fe-B alloy and non-coated alloy. The retention and magnetic force after and before corrosion test did not change in the case of TiN coated magnetic alloy sealed with stainless steel. Conclusion: It is considered that the corrosion problem and improvement for surface stability of dental magnetic materials could be solved by ion plating with TiN on the surface of dental magnetic materials and by sealing with stainless steels.
LMO($LaMnO_3$) buffer layer of superconducting coated conductor was deposited on IBAD-MgO template in the plasma atmosphere at $650^{\circ}C$ which is relatively low compared with conventional deposition temperature of more than $800^{\circ}C$. Deposition method of LMO was DC sputtering, and target and deposition chamber were connected to the cathode and anode respectively. When DC voltage was applied between target and chamber, plasma was formed on the surface of target. The tape substrate was located with the distance of 10 cm between target and tape substrate. When anode bias was connected to the tape substrate, electrons were attracted from plasma in target surface to the tape substrate, and only tape substrate was heated by electron bombardment without heating any other zone. The effect of electron bombardment on the surface of substrate was investigated by increasing bias voltage to the substrate. We found out that the sample of electron bombardment had the effect of surface heating and had good texturing at low controlling temperature.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the healing response of various Hydroxyapatite(HA) coated dental implants by Ion-Beam Assisted Deposition(IBAD) placed in the surgically created circumferential gap in dogs. Materials and methods: In four mongrel dogs, all mandibular premolars and the first molar were extracted. After an 8 weeks healing period, six submerged type implants were placed and the circumferential cylindrical 2mm coronal defects around the implants were made surgically with customized step drills. Groups were divided into six groups : anodized surface, anodized surface with 150nm HA and heat treatment, anodized surface with 300nm HA and heat treatment, anodized surface with 150nm HA and no heat treatment, and anodized surface with 150nm HA, heat treatment and bone graft, anodized surface with bone graft. The dogs were sacrificed following 12 weeks healing period. Specimens were analyzed histologically and histomorphometrically. Results: During the healing period, healing was uneventful and implants were well maintained. Anodized surface with HA coating and $430^{\circ}C$ heat treatment showed an improved regenerative characteristics. Most of the gaps were filled with newly regenerated bone. The implant surface was covered with bone layer as base for intensive bone formation and remodeling. In case that graft the alloplastic material to the gaps, most of the coronal gaps were filled with newly formed bone and remaining graft particles. The bone-implant contact and bone density parameters showed similar results with the histological findings. The bone graft group presented the best bone-implant contact value which had statistical significance. Conclusion: Within the scope of this study, nano-scale HA coated dental implants appeared to have significant effect on the development of new bone formation. And additional bone graft is an effective method in overcoming the gaps around the implants.
