  • We propose a novel low complexity video encoder, at the expense of a complex decoder, where video frames are intra-coded periodically and frames in between successive intra-coded frames are coded efficiently using a proposed irregular binning technique. We investigate a method of forming an irregular binning which is capable of quantizing any value effectively with only small number of bins, by exploiting the correlation between successive frames. This correlation is additionally exploited at the decoder, where the quality of reconstructed frames is enhanced gradually by applying POCS(projection on the convex sets). After an image frame is reconstructed with the irregular binning information at the proposed decoder, we can further improve the resulting quality by modifying the reconstructed image with motion-compensated image components from the neighboring frames which are considered to contain image details. In the proposed decoder, several iterations of these modification and re-projection steps can be invoked. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed coding scheme is comparable to that of H.264/AVC coding in m mode. Since the proposed video coding does not require motion estimation at the encoder, it can be considered as an alternative for some versions of H.264/AVC in applications requiring a simple encoder.

  • The H.264/AVC video coding standard uses rate distortion optimization (RDO) method to improve the compression performance in the intra prediction. The complexity and computational load are increased more than previous standard by using this method, even though this standard selects the best coding mode for the current macroblock. This paper proposes a fast intra mode decision algorithm for H.264/AVC encoder based on dominant edge direction (DED). To apply the idea, this algorithm uses the approximation of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient. By detecting the DED, 3 modes instead of 9 modes are chosen for RDO calculation to decide the best mode in the $4{\times}4$ luma block. As for the $16{\times}16$ luma and $8{\times}8$ chroma block, instead of 4 modes, only 2 modes are searched. Experimental results show that the computation time of the proposed algorithm is decreased to about 72% of the full search method with negligible quality loss.

  • HEVC(High Efficient Video Coding) has twice times better compression ratio than H.264/AVC, but since the computational complexity has significantly increased in the encoder side, it may cause difficulty in real-time SW implementation in the encoder side. This paper proposes two methods about fast intra prediction. First, fast mode and prediction unit decision method using transform coefficients of the original block is proposed. and second, fast prediction unit decision method using coded block flag(cbf) is proposed. The proposed method achieves 42% encoder speed up with 0.8% bitrate increase compared with HM16.0.

  • This paper presents a low-complexity algorithm for an H.264/AVC encoder. The proposed motion estimation scheme determines the best coding mode for a given macroblock (MB) by finding motion-blurred MBs; identifying, before motion estimation, an early selection of MBs; and hence saving processing time for these MBs. It has been observed that human vision is more sensitive to the movement of well-structured objects than to the movement of randomly structured objects. This study analyzed permissible perceptual distortions and assigned a larger inter-mode value to the regions that are perceptually less sensitive to human vision. Simulation results illustrate that the algorithm can reduce the computational complexity of motion estimation by up to 47.16% while maintaining high compression efficiency.

  • This paper is studied new block mode decision algorithm for H.264/AVC. The fast block mode decision algorithm is consist of block range decision algorithm. The block range decision algorithm classifies the block over 8$\times$8 size or below for 16${\times}$16 macroblock to decide the size and type of sub blocks. As the sub blocks of 8$\times$8, 8r4, 4$\times$8 and 4$\times$4, which are the blocks below 8$\times$8 size, include important motion information, the exact sub block decision is required. RDC(RDO cost) is used as the matching parameter for the exact sub block decision. RDC is calculated with motion strength which is the mean value of neighbor pixels of each sub block. The sub block range decision reduces encoding arithmetic amount by 34.62% on the average more than the case not using block range decision. The block mode decision using motion strength shows improvement of PSNR of 0.05[dB].

  • This papers proposes a motion vector coding method which selects the optimal predictive motion vector after excluding some candidate predictive motion vectors in the minimum rate-distortion sense, and prunes the candidate predictive motion vectors by a contradiction testing that operates under a predefined criterion at both encoder and decoder for reducing the signaling information. Experimental results show that the proposed method gains in BDBR by up to 1.8% compared to the H.264/AVC.

  • This paper presents a detailed subjective quality assessment for the ultra-high definition (UHD) videos having frame rates of 30fps and 60 fps. The subjective assessment is based on the ITU-R BT-500 recommendations, where double stimulus continuous quality scale (DSCQS-type II) test is performed for the evaluation of the perceived quality of the user's in terms of differential mean opinion score (DMOS). Encoding of the UHD videos by opting encoders i.e. H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, and VP9 at five different quantization parameter (QP) levels is done to investigate the perceived user's quality of experience (QoE) given as DMOS. Moreover, the encoding efficiency as the encoding time for each encoder and qualitative performance by employing full-reference (FR) quality metrics are presented in this work.

  • The most recent standard video codec, H.264/AVC achieves significant coding efficiency by using a rate-distortion optimization(RDO). The RDO is a measurement for selecting the best mode which minimizes the Lagrangian cost among several modes. As a result, the computational complexity is increased drastically in encoder. In this paper, a method for fast intra prediction mode decision is proposed to reduce the RDO complexity. To speed up Intra$4{\times}4$ and Chroma Intra encoding, the proposed method decides the case that MPM (Most Probable Mode) is the best prediction mode. In this case, the RDO process is skipped, and only MPM is used for encoding the block in Intra$4{\times}4$. And the proposed method is also applied to the chroma Intra prediction mode in a similar way to the Intra$4{\times}4$. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves an average encoding time saving of about 63% with negligible loss of PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio).

  • MPEG and VCEG have constituted a collaboration team called JCT-VC(Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding) and have been developing the HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) standard. The next generation video coding standard HEVC shows higher compression rate compared with the H.264/AVC standard, but the encoder computational complexity of the HEVC encoder is significantly high. In order to reduce this computational complexity in the HEVC encoder, a fast prediction unit decision is proposed. The proposed fast prediction unit decision method reduces the encoder complexity by skipping the remaining prediction units if the current prediction unit does not have any non-zero quantized transform coefficient. The proposed method reduces the encoder computational complexity by 50.3% comparing with HM6.0 but it maintains the same level of coding efficiency.
