An implementation and security analysis on H.235 for VoIP security on embedded environments (임베디드 환경에서의 H.235 기반 VoIP 보안 단말 구현 및 안전성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, H.235 based security mechanism for H.323 multimedia applications was implemented in embedded environment. H.235 covers authentication using HMAC-SHAI -96, authenticated Diffie-Hellman key exchange, security capability exchange, session key management for voice encryption, and encryption functions such as DES, 3DES, RC2. H.235-based mechanisms were also analyzed in terms of its security and possible attacks.

  • In this paper, H.235-based security mechanism for H.323 multimedia applications was implemented. H.235 covers authentication using HMAC, Diffie-Hellman key exchange, session key management for voice channel, and encryption functions such as DES, 3DES, RC2. Extra encryption algorithms such as SEED, and AES were also included for possible use in the future. And, we also analyzed the quality of service (QoS), the requirement of implementation, and interoperability to the result in this study. The results could be applied to secure simple IP phone terminals, gateways, or gatekeepers.

  • 인터넷 서비스와 함께 발달한 멀티미디어 서비스 중 각광받고 있는 VoIP 서비스는 유선 전화보다 저렴한 가격을 바탕으로 하여 호황을 누리고 있다. 그러나 인터넷을 전송망으로 이용하는 VoIP는 개인의 암호화되지 않은 음성데이터의 도청이 쉽게 이루어질 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 사용자 및 서비스 업자에 대한 인증 방법 부재로 인한 불법 이용이 예상되는 등 보안적 문제점을 가지고 있다. 그에 따른 VoIP 서비스의 보안 요구사항은 계속 증가하고 있으며 이에 대한 연구 노력이 시급하다. 본 논문에서는 ITU에서 제안한 H.323 VoIP의 보안 프로토콜인 H.235에 대하여 연구하고 이를 구현한 VoIP 보안 시스템을 구축하여 VoIP 보안 프로토콜의 요구 사항 및 방향을 제시하였다.

  • This paper describes the implementation of H.235 protocol for authentication and media stream encryption of multimedia conference systems. H.235 protocol is recommended by ITU-T for H.323 multimedia conference security protocol to prevent from being eavesdropped and modified by an illegal attacker. The implementation in this paper has used password-based with symmetric encryption authentication. Media streams are encrypted using the Diffie-Hellman key exchange algorithm and symmetric encryption algorithms such as RC2, DES and Triple-DES. Also, 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard and 128-bit Korean standard SEED algorithms are implemented for the future extension. The implemented authentication and media stream encryption has shown that it is possible to identify terminal users without exposing personal information on networks and to preserve security of multimedia conference. Also, encryption delay time and used memory are not increased even though supporting media stream encryption/decryption, thus the performance of multimedia conference system has not deteriorated.

  • 본 논문에서는 ITU-T 영상회의 프로토콜 표준안(H.323)에서 보안 프로토콜로 권고된 H.235를 기반으로 하여 사용자 인증, 비디오 및 오디오 데이터의 암호화, 암호키의 보호에 대하여 구현한다. 인증 방법으로는 패스워드 기반의 대칭키 암호 인증을 사용하고, 비디오 및 오디오 데이터의 암호화에 사용되는 암호키의 보호를 위해서는 DES와 Diffie-Hellman의 키 분배 방법을 사용한다. 또한, DES를 사용한 비디오 및 오디오 데이터의 암호화/복호화를 보여준다.

Impact of Cryptographic operations on the QoS of VoIP system (VoIP 보안 시스템의 QoS 측정 및 분석)

  • The encryption of packets increases delay and delay jitter that may degrade the quality of service (QoS) in real-time communications. So, we analyzed the delay jitter, delay, and interval delay between consecutive packets which were encrypted by the DES, 3DES, SEED and AES algorithms in this study. The interval delay and jitter of three algorithms such as the DES, SEED, AES were similar to the results of no encryption. But in the case of 3DES, the encryption of packets increases the variance of interval delay and jitter in comparison with other algorithms. we also analyzed properties of security and an efficiency of RTP security between SRTP and H.235.
