  • IGCC(Integrated Coal Gasification and Combined Cycle) plants can be among the most advanced and environmental systems for electric energy generation from various feed stocks and is becoming more and more popular in new power generation fields. In this work, the performance of IGCC plants employing Shell gasification technology and a GE 7FB gas turbine engine was simulated using IPSEpro open-equation modeling environment for different operating conditions. Performance analyses and comparisons of all operating cases were performed based on the design cases. Discussions were focused on gas composition, syngas production rate and overall performance. The validation of key steady-state performance values calculated from the process models were compared with values from the provided heat and material balances for Shell coal gasification technology. The key values included in the validation included the inlet coal flow rate; the mass flow rate, heating value, and composition of major gas species (CO, H2, CH4, H2O, CO2, H2S, N2, Ar) for the syngas exiting the gasifier island; and the HP and MP steam flows exiting the gasifier island.

  • Endovaginal and endorectal receiver only surface coil were designed for MR imaging(MRI) and $^1H$ MR spectroscopy(MRS) for the uterine cervix and the prostate. The shape of endovaginal coil wire was rectangular with round comer. The shape of endorectal coil wire was long elliptic shape during insertion and circular shape after insertion. Conventional spin echo and fast spin echo sequences were used as T1 and T2 weighted imaging sequences, respectively. 3D volume localized in vivo $^1H$ MR spectroscopy of the human cervix and prostate was performed using PRESS or STEAM localization method. Using home-built endvaginal and endorectal coils, excellent T1 and T2 images were obtained to visualize early cervical and prostate tumors. 3D volume localized in vivo $^1H$ MRS was useful to differentiate the cancerous tissue from the normal tissue.

  • Purpose: To determine the motor cortex dysfunction in hemiparetic patients due to deep intracerebral hematoma, authors performed proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (lH MRS) for the evaluation of biochemical changes in the cortex on affected hemisphere according to axonal injury at the level of internal capsule. Methods: Ten control subjects and 14 patients with documentable hemiparesis of varying severity hemiparesis were included. All the hemiparesis was caused by deep intracerebral hematoma (putaminal and thalamic hemorrhage). In vivo 1H MRS study was performed on a 3T MRI/MRS system using STEAM sequence. As a single-voxel technique, Spectral parameters were: 20 ms TE, 2000 ms TR, 128 averages, 2500 Hz spectral width, and 2048 data points. Results: We found that the mean N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/phosphocreatine (Cr) and NAA/choline (Cho) ratios were significantly decreased in the motor cortex of the hemiparesis patients compared with control subjects. Conclusions: 1H MRS examinations of the motor cortex might help to differentiate distinct clinical entities of hemiparesis and to monitor pharmacological effects in therapeutic trials, providing a quantitative biological marker for motor neuron dysfunction. • Scallop, Pectinopecten yessoenis(Jay), cultivated in the cold east coast of Kwangwon region, Korea, is expected be to produced about 50, 000 tons in the year 2000. Scallop, first of all should be exuviated to process for new goods. In this study, vacuum and nitrogen packagings were applied to extend the shelf-life of exuviated scallop boiled with steam for 10 min. Vacuum and nitrogen packagings retarded the decrease in pH, whereas inhibited the production of $NH_2-N, $ VBN, TMA, and TBA of exuviated scallop stored at $5^{\circ}C.$ They also inhibited the microbial growth. But, there was no significant difference in the bacteriostatic effects between both packaging methods. The estimated shelf-lives of boiled and exuviated scallops for control, vacuum, and nitrogen packagings were about 30, 36, and 36 days, respectively.

  • Cost allocation on cogeneration is a methodology dividing the input of common cost to electricity cost and heat cost. In the cost allocation methodology of the electricity and heat on a cogeneration, there are energy method, work method, proportional method, benefit distribution method, reversible work method, various exergetic methods, and so on. In previous study, various cost allocation methodologies have been applied and analyzed on a gas-turbine cogeneration producing the 33.1 MW of electricity and the 32.2 Gcal/h of heat, a steam-turbine cogeneration producing the 22.2 MW of electricity and the 44.3 Gcal/h of heat, and combined-cycle cogeneration producing the 314.1 MW of electricity and the 279.4 Gcal/h of heat. In this study, we integrately analyze the results of previous studies and examine the generality and rationality each methodology. Additionally, a new point of view on the values of alternative electricity efficiency and alternative heat efficiency in the previous methodologies was proposed. As the integrated result, we conclude that reversible work method of various common cost allocation methodologies is most rational.

  • The present work discusses two different models of boiling water reactor (BWR) bundle to compare the neutronic characteristics of uranium dioxide ($UO_2$) and uranium zirconium hydride ($UZrH_{1.6}$) fuel. Each bundle consists of four assemblies. The BWR assembly fueled with $UO_2$ contains $8{\times}8$ fuel rods while that fueled with $UZrH_{1.6}$ contains $9{\times}9$ fuel rods. The Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport code, based on the Mont Carlo method, is used to design three dimensional models for BWR fuel bundles at typical operating temperatures and pressure conditions. These models are used to determine the multiplication factor, pin-by-pin power distribution, axial power distribution, thermal neutron flux distribution, and axial thermal neutron flux. The moderator and coolant (water) are permitted to boil within the BWR core forming steam bubbles, so it is important to calculate the reactivity effect of voiding at different values. It is found that the hydride fuel bundle design can be simplified by eliminating water rods and replacing the control blade with control rods. $UZrH_{1.6}$ fuel improves the performance of the BWR in different ways such as increasing the energy extracted per fuel assembly, reducing the uranium ore, and reducing the plutonium accumulated in the BWR through burnup.

  • This study was done to evaluate the antioxidant effect of oak hot water extracts on the oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). The cytotoxicity of $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative stress was performed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay for the cell viability according to the dose-dependent treatment. Oak extracts demonstrated a dose-dependent ability to inhibit $H_2O_2$-induced apoptosis in cultured tenofibroblasts, as assessed by MTT assay and FACS analysis. $H_2O_2$ increased the phosphorylation of extracellular regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) and of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In contrast, treatment with oak extracts was decreased this activation of ERK1/2 and JNK, as confirmed by western blot analysis, and reduced the production of ROS, as verified by fluorescent microscopic and flow cytometry (FACS) analyses. These findings suggest that oak extracts, by suppressing JNK, ERK1/2, and intracellular ROS production, have a concentration-dependent antiapoptotic effect on achilles tenofibroblasts exposed to an oxidative stressor, and may have therapeutic potential.

  • This paper deals with an economic evaluation of domestic low-temperature water electrolysis hydrogen production. We evaluate the economic feasibility of on-site hydrogen fueling stations with the hydrogen production capacity of 30 $Nm^3/hr$ by the alkaline and the polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysis. The hydrogen production prices of the alkaline water electrolysis, the polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysis, and the steam methane reforming hydrogen fueling stations with the hydrogen production capacity of 30 $Nm^3/hr$ were estimated as 18,403 $won/kgH_2$, 22,945 $won/kgH_2$, 21,412 $won/kgH_2$, respectively. Domestic alkaline water electrolysis hydrogen production is evaluated as economical for small on-site hydrogen fueling stations, and we need to further study the economic evaluation of low-temperature water electrolysis hydrogen production for medium and large scale on-site hydrogen fueling stations.

  • This paper presents a dynamic equivalencing method in large electric power system for stability analysis. This method of modeling simplified equivalents for parts of the network outside the study area is to evaluate the stability of a study area modeled in detail. Generators are closely coupled in an electrical sense tend to swing together in groups during disturbances, and this behavior can be exploited to reduce the size of the power system model. The characteristics of generators swing together are referred to as coherency Coherency groups whose generators state trajectory are similar to the other generators state trajectory in the same coherency group by a certain disturbance. In this paper, procedures for forming dynamic equivalents of control devices of coherency-based generating units are proposed and the aggregation of the control devices such as excitation system and governor-turbine system is accomplished by this method. This method can deal with the aggregation of the same type of control devices and combination of hydro and steam unit or the many types of excitation systems. etc. This method is shown to be efficient in reducing the number of control device of generating units with small error in the study group by result of case study presented latter part of this paper.

  • The red ginseng is very popular as a health food. It has been manufactured with raw ginseng by the conventional method. But, the yield of the heaven grade ginseng (the best quality red ginseng) among the whole products is around 5-7%, Therefore, the yield should be improved in order to increase economic returns. In this study, a new model of drying system was developed to improve the yield of heaven grade ginseng from 7% to 15% or more. For this system, temperature and relative humidity were controlled by the feedback control system, and a solenoid valve for steam supply and other variables were controlled by the PC. The special features of this system developed are an image processing system for monitoring the red ginseng during the drying process in the drying chamber, and a cylindrical porous tray for holding ginseng that is rotating with the speed of 0-10rpm in the drying chamber and makes uniform drying of red ginseng possible.
