Companding algorithms have been used to enhance speech recognition in noise for cochlea implant users. The efficiency of using companding for digital hearing aid users is not yet validated. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of the companding for digital hearing aid users in the various hearing loss cases. Using HeLPS, a hearing loss simulator, two different sensorinerual hearing loss conditions were simulated; mild gently sloping hearing loss(HL1) and moderate to steeply sloping hearing loss(HL2). In addition, a non-linear compression was simulated to compensate for hearing loss using national acoustic laboratories-non-linear version 1(NAL-NL1) in HeLPS. In companding, the following four different companding strategies were used changing Q values(q1, q2) of pre-filter(F filter) and post filter(G filter). Firstly, five IEEE sentences which were presented with speech-shaped noise at different SNRs(0, 5, 10, 15 dB) were processed by the companding. Secondly, the processed signals were applied to HeLPS. For comparison, signals which were not processed by companding were also applied to HeLPS. For the processed signals, log-likelihood ratio(LLR) and cepstral distance(CEP) were measured for evaluation of speech quality. Also, fourteen normal hearing listeners performed speech reception threshold(SRT) test for evaluation of speech intelligibility. As a result of this study, the processed signals with the companding and NAL-NL1 have performed better than that with only NAL-NL1 in the sensorineural hearing loss conditions. Moreover, the higher ratio of Q values showed better scores in LLR and CEP. In the SRT test, the processed signals with companding(SRT = -13.33 dB SPL) showed significantly better speech perception in noise than those processed using only NAL-NL1(SRT = -11.56 dB SPL).

In an effort to clarify the wetted patterns of sandy loam soil under trickle irrigation conditions, the distance of wetted zone, infiltration capacity and soil wetted patterns, etc. were measured by gypsum block as soil moisture sensor located every 5 cm vertically and horizontaly in the soil bin under the such conditions as a). irrigation rates set to 2, 4, 6, 8 liters per hour b). total amount of water applied fixed to 14.62 liters per soil bin c) the hearing force of soil measured by plate penetrometer ranging from 1.04 to 1.22kg/cm$_2$ The results can be summarized as follows ; 1. The wetted distance in horizontal direction(H), the wetted distance in vertical direction(D), the horizontal infiltration capacity (iH) and the vertical infiltration capacity(in)could by explained as a function of time t. 2. The horizontal wetted distance (H) is explained by an exponetial function H= a$.$ t where b was found ranging from 021 to 026 under surface trickle irrigation, which was considered a lotlower than the classical value of 0.5 and these measurements were indifferent to the increasing irrigation rates. 3. As for the surface trickle irrigation where horizontal infiltration capacity(iH) is explained as iH = A $.$ t h, the coefficient A increases with respect to irrigation rates within the limits of 0.89~1.34. 4. In terms of surface trickle irrigation of the ratio of Dm Which is maximum vertical wetted distance to Hm, which is maximum horizontal wetted distance, found to be within range of 1.0 to 1.21. It was also noted that the value of Dm decreses when irrigation rates increases while the value of Hm changes the opposite direction. 5. The optimum location of sensors from emitter for surface trickle irrigation should he inside of hemisphere whose lateral radius is 28~30cm long and vertical radius is 10~12cm long. The distance between emitters should be within 60cm long. 6. In the study of vertical wetted distance( D) where D= a $.$ tb, the exponential coefficient b ranged from 0.61 to 0.75 in surface trickle irrigation, and from 0A9 to 0.68 for subsurface trickle irrigation. These measurements showed an increasing tendency to with respect to irrigation rates. 7. In case of vertical infiltration capacity( in), where iD= A $.$ t 1-h, the coefficient A for surface trickle irrigation found to be within range of 0.16 to 0.19 and did not show any relationships with varying degree of irrigation rates. However, the coefficient was varying from 0.09 to 0.22 and showed a tendency to increase vis-a-vis irrigation rates for subsurface trickle irrigation, in contrast. 8. In the observation of subsurface trickle irrigation, it was found that Dm/Hm ratio was within 1.52 to 1.91 and showed a decreasing tendency with respect to increasing rates of irrigation. 9. The location of sensors for subsurface trickle irrigation follows same pattern as above, with vertical distance from emitter being 10~17cm long and horizontal 22~25cm long. The location of emitter should be 50 cm. 10.The relationship between VS which is the volume of wetted soil and Q which is the total amount of water when soil is reached field capacity could be explained as VS= 2.914Q0.91and the irrigation rates showed no impacts on the above relationship.
This paper shows the results of a series of model tests on the behavior of steel pipe pile which is subjected to lateral and inclined loads in homogeneous and non-homogeneous Nak-dong River sands. Non-homogeneous soil consisted of two layers, upper and lower layer. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the effect of ratio of lower layer height to embedded pile length, ratio of soil modules of upper layer to lower layer and inclined load on the behavior of single pile. These effects can be quantified only by the results of model tests. As a result. in non-homogeneous sand soil, it is shown that the lateral behavior depends upon the ratio of soil modules of upper layer to lower layer more than other factors. And it was found that the relationship between the deflection ratio of non-homogeneous sand to homogeneous sand and the ratio of lower layer height to embedded pile length can be fitted to exponential function of H/L by model tests results. For the inclined load applied, it is shown that the bending moment-depth relationship is not similar to the case of laterally loaded pile and the depth of maximum bending moment at relative density of 90% increases about 70% more than the pile only loaded laterally.
Adsorption dynamics of ethane/ethylene mixture gas and desorption dynamics during the displacement desorption with propane as a desorbent in the column filled with faujasite adsorbent were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The simulation that adopted heat and mass balance and an ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) for the multicomponent adsorption equilibrium well predicted the experimental breakthrough curves of the adsorption and desorption. At the adsorption breakthrough experiments, roll-ups of ethane increased as the adsorption pressure increased and the adsorption temperature decreased. During the displacement desorption with propane in the column saturated with ethane/ethylene mixture gas, almost 100% of ethylene was obtained for a certain time interval. The adsorption strength of the desorbent greatly affected the adsorption and re-adsorption dynamics of ethylene. The re-adsorption capacity for ethylene has been greatly reduced when iso-propane, which is stronger desorbent than propane, was used as desorbent. It was found from the simulation that the performance of the displacement desorption process would be superior when the ratio of ${(q_s{\times}b)}_{C_2H_4}/{(q_s{\times}b)}_{C_3H_s}$ was 0.83, that is, the adsorption strengths of ethylene and the desorbent were similar.
The effect of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on photosynthesis was studied by the simultaneous measurements of $O_2$ evolution and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence in tobacco leaves. When the tobacco leaves were teated with UV-B (1 $W{\cdot}m^{-2}$), the maximal photosynthetic $O_2$, evolution (Pmax; 4.60 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) at 200 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) was decreased with increasing time of UV-B treatment showing 80% decline after 4 h treatment. Chl fluorescence parameters were also affected by ultraviolet-B. Fo was increased while both Fm and Fv were decreased, resulted in the decreased of photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm). Non-radiative dissipation of absorbed light as heat as estimated as NPQ (Fm/Fm' - 1) was also decreased with increasing time of UV-B treatment while the extent of photochemical quenching (qP) was not changed. Thus, the ratio of (1-qP)/NPQ parameter was also increased with increasing time of UV-B treatment indicating PSII is under the threat of photoinhibition. The result indicate that UV-B primarily decreases the capacity to dissipate excitation energy by trans-thylakoid pH, which in turn inhibits PSII activity.
5,10-Methenyltetrahydrofolate synthetase from chicken liver was purified through 30-70% ammonium sulfate fractionation, Q Sepharose Fast Flow anion exchange and Source 15Phe hydrophobic interaction chromatography. Specific activities of cell extract, ammonium sulfate, Q Sepharose Fast Flow and Source 15Phe were 0.0085, 0.031, 0.80 and 1.27 U/mg, respectively. Purification fold activities of cell extract, ammonium sulfate, Q Sepharose Fast Flow and Source 15Phe were 1, 3.7, 94.1 and 149.4, respectively. HPLC gel permeation chromatography and SDS-polyacrylamide electrophoresis experiments indicated that the enzyme is a monomeric protein with a molecular weight of 22.8 kDa. Km for 5-methyl THF and Mg-ATP were $7.1\;{\mu}M$ and $63\;{\mu}M$, respectively. Optimum temperature and pH were $30^{\circ}C$ and 6.0, respectively. The data for metal ion specificity and stoichiometry showed that the maximum activity was obtained with a 1:l. ratio of $Mg^{2+}$. The ATP and Km values increased in the order of MgATP, MgCTP, MgUTP and MgGTP, and the maximum activities also decreased in the same order, indicating MgATP as the most efficient substrate. The enzyme was chemically modified only by tetranitrometane and 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl)-carbodiimide, indicating that tyrosine and carboxylate are present in the active site.
Since biomass is given the status of "renewable resource" in contrast to "exhaustible resource" e.q., fossil fuels, it plays a significant role in the sustainable development in future. We installed a downdraft gasifier for power generation from biomass materials. The biomass raw materials were wood chips with a moisture content of 18-23 wt.%, supplied at 40-50kg/h. This paper describes on the optimum gasification air ratio that is defined as the ratio of the oxygen mole supplied into the gasifier to the oxygen mole required for complete combustion for producing syngas supplied into a gas engine. The results showed that, lower heating value of the syngas was 1200 $kcal/m^3$$_N-dry$ and cold gas efficiency of the gasification system was 72% under optimum operating conditions.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the muscle activity ratio of the lower limb according to changes in straight leg raise (SLR) test angles on hamstring muscle shortening during squat exercises. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: The subjects were 14 healthy adults who were informed of and agreed to the method and purpose of the study. The participants were classified into SLR groups according to two angles (over $80^{\circ}$ or under $80^{\circ}$) assessed using the SLR tests. After training and practicing the wall squat posture to be applied to the experiment, electromyography (EMG) was used to measure changes in muscle activity during the performance of a wall squat. After stretching, a sequence of pre-stretch tests were performed again, and the active and passive SLR tests were also reconducted; thereafter, a wall squat was performed again by attaching EMG electrodes. The EMG results before and after stretching were compared. Results: The muscle activity of the vastus lateralis oblique muscle increased in both groups. The muscle activity of the vastus medialis oblique muscle decreased in over both group. Rectus femorus activity increased in the under 80-degree groups but decreased in the over 80-degree group. The muscle activity of the biceps femoris muscle decreased after stretching in the over 80-degree group and increased in the under 80-degree group, and the semitendinosus muscle activity after stretching was decreased. The quadriceps-to-hamstring muscle (Q:H) ratio before and after stretching between groups showed that the hamstring muscle ratio decreased after stretching in both groups. Conclusions: The results of this study showed that the Q:H ratio before and after stretching between groups was not significantly different.
After spraying simulated sulphuric acid rain (SSAR) to the leaves of Glycine max, Quercus aliena var. pellucida and Pinus rigida, the leachates were consecutively collected and quantitatively determined for the concentration of K and Ca. The amount of the leached ion decreased with subsequent acid treatment for all plants. But as the pH of SSAR decreased, the amount of the leached ion increased. The cumulative quantities of K leached from each species were 1.04 to 1.46 times higher at pH 4.0, 1.09 to 1.58 times higher at pH 3.5 and 1.24 to 2.03 times higher at pH 3.0 compared with pH 5. 6 treatments. The cumulative quantities of Ca leached from each species were 1.23 to 1.47 times higher at pH 4.0, 1.50 to 1.92 times higher at pH 3.5, and 2.45 to 3.30 times higher at pH 3.0 compared with pH 5.6 treatments. The Ca /K ratio in 1000 ml leachate was 1.10 to 2.91 for Q. aliena var. pellucida and 1.68 to 2.98 for P. rigida, but 0.66 to 0.91 for G, max. The Ca /K ratio in 1000 rnl leachate increased for all three species, as the pH of SSAR decreased. Foliage analysis after acid rain treatment showed leaching effect at pH 3.0.
In this study, the effect of pH and temperature on the adsorption behavior of acid mine drainage (AMD) on coal mine drainage sludge (CMDS) has been investigated during the treatment of coal mine drainage (CMD) by electrical purification method. The pH$_{zero\;point\;charge}$ (pH$_{zpc}$) of CMDS was 5. The removal ratio of copper, zinc, cadmium, iron were increased according to the increase of pH value. The adsorption amount of copper showed 0.64 mg g$^{-1}$ sludge. It was independent of pH value. The adsorption amount of the other metals showed l.l times when pH was 3. The adsorption amount of chromium was a little bit increased at the pH value higher than 7 due to a small amount of the chromium was eluted as $Cr(OH)_6^{3-}$. The amount of metals' absorption were decreased according to temperature was increase at pH value was 3. The selectivity order was Cd>Fe > Zn > Cu. The amount of absorption showed q$_{max}$ Cu 2.747 mg g$^{-1}$ andZn 2.525 mg g$^{-1}$ when pH value higher than 5. It was independent of temperature.
