A Geochemical Study on the Behaviors of Major and Trace Elements in the Ulsan Granite and Its Contact Serpentinite (울산화강암 및 인접 사문암 중 주/미량 원소의 거동에 관한 지화학적 연구)

  • Geochemical characteristics of iron-related Ulsan granite was studied in comparison with the Cretaceous granitoids from the metallogenic provinces of copper, lead-zinc and lead-zinc/molybdenum in the Gyeongsang Basin, and the variation of cheminal compositions at the Ulsan granite/serpentinite contact was investigated. Ulsan granite is plotted in the regions of granite and granodiorite of Streckeisen's diagram. It shows differentiation trend of calc-alkali magma, and the magmatic evolution from granodiorite to granite is consistant with the general crystallization path of the Cretaceous the granitoids in Gyeongsang Basin. Differentiation index(D.I.) of Ulsan granite is 86~95, which is higher than those of Jindong granites (D.I.=45~70) and Onjongri granites (D.I.=67~84), and there are differences in the content of some major and trace elements between Ulsan granite and other Cretaceous granitoids. At the Ulsan granite/serpentinite contact $SiO_2$, $K_2O$, $Na_2O$, $Al_2O_3$, Rb, Sr, Ba which are abundant in Ulsan granite decrease toward serpentinite, while T.Fe, MgO, Ni, Cr which are abundant in serpentinite decrease toward Ulsan granite. Therefore, the geochemical characteristics of Ulsan granite is applicable to distinguish iron province from different metallogenic provinces where other Cretaceous granitoids occur in the Gyeongsang Basin, and it is possible to find serpentinite which was intruded by granite on the basis of chemical variations.

Applicability of Fuzzy Logic Based Data Integration to Geothermal Potential Mapping in Southern Gyeongsang Basin, Korea (경상분지 남부지역의 지열 부존 잠재력 평가를 위한 퍼지기반 자료통합의 적용성 연구)

  • The occurrence of geothermal water has high correlates highly with fossil geothermal system. A fuzzy logic based data integration is applied for geothermal potential mapping in the Southern Gyeongsang Basin which is distributed in the regional fossil geothermal system. Several data sets are related with the origin and distribution of fossil geothermal system, such as the geological map, the density of lineaments, the aerial survey map of magnetic intensity, the map of hydrothermal alteration, the distribution density of hydrothermal mines, which were collected as thematic maps for the integration. Fuzzy membership functions for all thematic maps were compared to the locations of the spa hot springs, which were used as ground-truth control points. After integrating all thematic maps, the results of gamma operator (${\gamma}=0.1$) was showed the highest success rate, and new geothermal potential zone is prospected in some area.

Mineralization of Hydrothermal Ore Deposits in Relation to Chemical Variation of the Cretaceous Granitoids in the Gyeongsang Basin (경상분지내 열수광상의 광화작용과 백악기 화강암류의 화학성분 변화와의 관계)

  • The Cretaceous granitic rocks show differences in rock types and chemical compositions according to metallogenic provinces of copper, lead zinc and molybdenum in the Gyeongsang basin. Jindong granites are of granodiorite~quartz diorite~diorite in Cu-province; Makeunsan/Yucheon-Eonyang granites, granodiorite~granite in Pb Zn-province; Onjeongri-Yeonghae granites, granodiorite~quartz diorite in Mo-province, and there is a trend that productive masses are less differenciated than barren masses in Cu and Pb-Zn provinces whereas productive masses are more differenciated than barren masses in Mo province. Metallogenic provinces are distinguishable by variations of major and trace elements. The Cretaceous granitic rocks are highest in the content of Ca, Mg and other basic major elements and lowest in the content of K and Na in Cu provicne; the variation trends are vice versa in Pb-Zn province. Trace elements such as Rb and Sr show variations related to K and Ca, and metallogenic provinces are also distinguishable by their ratios. The granitic rocks of Mo province have intermediate content of major and trace elements, but are clearly distinguishable from Jindong granites and partly overlapped by Yucheon-Eonyang granites. Chlorine content in biotites is higher in a productive mass than in a barren mass in Cu province. Therefore, the mineralogical and chemical compositions are applicable as geochemical index to distinguish the types of mineralizaion, and productive and barren masses of the Cretaceous granitic rocks in the Gyeongsang basin.

A Study on the Spatial Variation of Target Water Quality and Excess Rate at 41 Stations in Nakdong River Basin after the Total Maximum Daily Loads (수질오염총량제 시행 이후 낙동강수계 41개 지점의 BOD와 T-P의 목표수질과 초과율의 공간변화 분석)

  • The objective of this study was to assess spatial variation of the target water quality criteria and excess rate in Nakdong river basin after the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). For this, 41 total water quality monitoring stations were selected BOD and T-P data were collected from 2003 to 2019. The annual average water quality of BOD and T-P were calculated and compared with the target water quality for each stations by peroid. As a result of analyzing the BOD, Kumho A, Nakbon F, Namgang D, Miryang B, Wicheon B and Hoecheon A exceeded the target water quality criteria for two consecutive times. For T-P, Nakbon N, Naeseung B, Miryang A, Hwanggang A and Hoecheon A exceeded the target water quality criteria twice in a row. In the case of T-P, the target water quality excess rate was relatively low after the TMDLs implementation compared to before the TMDLs implementation. However, in the case of BOD, there was no difference in the target water quality excess rate before and after TMDLs. As a result, the overall annual average water quality shows a decreasing trend, but it is necessary to manage the water quality for the Nakdong river basin that exceed the target water quality.

Water Resources and Demand in the Namgang Sub-basin (남강 중권역의 수자원 부존량과 용수 수요량의 비교 평가)

  • Water demand and resource at a watershed scale were investigated to prepare for long-term water planning of the Namgang sub-basin. The quantity of water resource was defined as average annual runoff by a simple Tank model with three serial tanks, and water demand for public, industrial, agricultural and the other uses was determined using the per-unit method employed in the Water Vision 2020, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. The results showed that total amount of water resources in the Namgang sub-basin was estimated as about $935,414{\times}10^{3}m^3/yr$ for a 10-year period from 2000 to 2009 and the water withdrawals in public, industrial, agricultural and other sector were derived as $105,493{\times}10^{3}m^3/yr$, $32,686{\times}10^{3}m^3/yr$, $243,194{\times}10^{3}m^3/yr$, and $81,615{\times}10^{3}\;m^3m^3/yr$, respectively. In addition, the Namgaram Inno-city project could increase the overall water demand by $17,156{\times}10^{3}\;mm^3/yr$ due to the population influx.

SHRIMP Age Datings and Volcanism Times of the Igneous Rocks in the Cheolwon Basin, Korea (철원분지 화성암류의 SHRIMP 연령측정과 화산작용 시기)

  • Cheolwon Group in the Cheolwon Basin, which lies northwest of the Gyeonggi massif, has been correlated to the Yucheon Group in the Gyeongsang Basin, but its ages and volcanic times are defined to be considerately earlier than the other one. In this study, SHRIMP zircon U-Pb ages were determined from the igneous rocks in the Cheolwon Basin. The mean ages from zircons are $115.0{\pm}1.1Ma$ in rhyolite, and $111.24{\pm}0.85Ma$ and $109.1{\pm}1.1Ma$ in granite porphyry. The minimum age is 113 Ma in the Jijangbong Tuff. Such age in the rhyolite define the intrusion time of ring dykes, suggesting a caldera collapse following eruption of the Dongmakgol Tuff. Such age in the Jijangbong Tuff represent latest volcanism as postcaldera in the basin. The volcanic rocks in the basin were erupted during late Aptian, and are correlated to the Sindong Group in the Gyeongsang Basin. The plutonism in the basin occurred during $111.24{\pm}0.85Ma{\sim}109.1{\pm}1.1Ma$, following the volcanism. The age distribution of the analyzed zircons in the Jijangbong Tuff indicates the presence of foreign zircons derived from protoliths, regarding a wide span of zircon ages from Cretaceous to Jurassic, Triassic, early and late Protozoic, and Archean. The Archean age suggests the possible presence of the Archean protoliths with such age, which have not been exposed on the surface. The age distribution with wide span suggests that its vent is located in an area that several strata with different ages piled up and intercepted with some intrusives.

Lead Isotope Study on Lead-Zinc Ore Deposits in the Eastern and Southern Parts of the Gyeongsang Basin (경상분지 동남부 연 · 아연광상에 대한 납 동위원소 연구)

  • Based upon the lead isotopic compositions of the galenas collected from Pb-Zn ore deposits distributed in the eastern and southern parts of the Gyeongsang basin, we investigated what kinds of source materials were involved in the formation of these ore deposits and compared the lead isotopic characteristics of these ore deposits with those of the ore deposits in the Taebaegsan area. The isotopic compositions of the common leads from Pb-Zn ore deposits in the Gyeongsang basin show the variation with the relatively limited range ($^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb=18.156{\sim}18.377$, $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb=15.482{\sim}15.638$, and $^{208}Pb/^{204}Pb=37.953{\sim}38.605$). They are plotted on or below ore lead growth curve(Cumming & Richards, 1975) and average crustal lead evolution curve (Stacey & Kramer, 1975). In the plumbotectonic model IV(Zartman & Haines, 1988), they are plotted between the evolution curves of mantle and orogene. But the lead isotopic compositions of the common leads in the Taebaegsan area are plotted on and above upper crust curve. Considering the above-mentioned lead isotopic characteristics, the linear trend shown in the isotopic compositions of the common leads in the Gyeongsang basin can be considered as the mixing isochron between high radiogenic crustal materials such as the Ryongnam massif and low radiogenic materials derived from depleted mantle or materials with relatively low U/Pb and Th/U ratios.

Movement History of Faults Considered from the Geometric and Kinematic Characteristics of Fracture System in Gilan-cheongsong Area, Gyeongsang Basin, Korea (경상분지 길안-청송 지역에서 단열계의 기하학적.운동학적 특성으로부터 고찰된 단층운동사)

  • The Gilan-Cheongsong area, which is in contact with Yeongyang and Uiseong Blocks of Gyeongsang Basin, Korea, consists of Precambrian metamorphic rocks, Triassic Cheongsong granite, Cretaceous sedimentary rocks(Iljik, Hupyeongdong, Jeomgok Formations), and Cretaceous igneous rocks(andesite, quartz porphyry, felsite). In this area are developed faults trending in (W)NW, NNW, ENE, NS, (N)NE directions which are representative in the Gyeongsang Basin. We analyzed the geometric and kinematic characteristics of fracture systems to inquire into movement history and sense of these faults in this area. This study suggests that these faults were mainly strike-slip movement. The orientations of fracture sets show ENE, NNW, (W)NW, (N)NE, NS in descending order of frequency. Their prolongation presents (W)NW, NNW, ENE, (N)NE, NS in descending order of predominance, and also agrees with that of faults in this area. The development sequence and movement sense of fracture sets are summarized as follows; (1) (W)NW: dextral shearing $\rightarrow$ (2) (W)NW and NNW: conjugate shearing(the former: dextral, the latter: sinistral) $\rightarrow$ (3) NNW: dextral shearing $\rightarrow$ (4) (W)NW: sinistral shearing $\rightarrow$ (5) ENE: dextral shearing $\rightarrow$ (6) ENE and NS: conjugate shearing(the former: sinistral, the latter: dextral) $\rightarrow$ (7) (N)NE: sinistral shearing, and this result is closely associated with the development sequence and movement sense of faults developed in this area.

A CFD-based simulation study of a serpentine flocculation basin for potable water treatment (CFD를 이용한 우류식 응집지 수리해석에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents a Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) based simulation and experimental tracer test of flow pattern and turbulent energy dissipation inside a serpentine flocculation basin with continuous operation. Research focused on the evaluation of a specific flow pattern on the hydraulic behavior on the flocculation basin. From the results of CFD simulation and actual tracer test, both results were in good accordance with each other. Also, each Morill index were calculated as 1.5 from CFD simulation and 1.7 from actual tracer test, respectively. Especially, turbulence energy was dissipated relatively higher in the vicinity of inlet to the flocculation basin than other region. The differences between the CFD simulation and actual tracer test were 1.4 min in $T_{50}$, and 1.3 min in $T_p$, respectively.
