  • This study is about the Changdeokgung Palace and detached palaces of architect Park Jacheong who was a representative supervisor having framed the palace architecture of the Joseon Dynasty. The results are as follows. First, Park Jacheong had been in charge of Changdeokgung Palace for 15 years since its founding. The palace was continued to run for the longest time and was the palace on the frame made by him for the years, so Changdeokgung Palace's status has become as good as Gyeongbokgung Palace's. Second, he built a lot of palaces besides Changdeokgung. They were completed about the same time in accordance with the political intentions of King Taejong. Park Jacheong was a former military officer and was well skilled in mobilization of manpower and materials by making good use of the military power. Third, the detached palaces constructed by him were located in the places where military training and testing of new weapons were possible. They were also used as sleeping, dining and office spaces. This can be regarded as a result of the tradition of the storied-pavilion that had been since the Goryeo Dynasty, with the method of approaching to the main hall of the palace.

  • Naejeon area at Chandeokgung Palace means the areas of Huijeongdang and Daejojeon area. Huijeongdang or Hall of Brilliant Rule is made for the king, and Daejojeon or Hall of Great Creation is made for the queen. These areas were located nearly and repeatedly burned down and rebuilt several times together, but their forms were largely unchanged. However in 1920, they rebuilt in a very different way. The purpose of this study was to estimate construction plans, progress and completion of Naejeon area's rebuilding. They were reconstructed into eclectic structures as the exteriors were built using basic materials from Gyeongbokgung Palace. So they have traditional-looking appearances, but the interiors consisted of modern equipments and were built by applying foreign style construction techniques. The main floored room of Daejojeon and the area of Huijeongdang were built in standing style by installing radiators and French furnitures. Also, the porch, corridor, storage space and veranda were constructed under the influence of Japanese construction. After the reconstruction, there were changes in the usage of some spaces. Huijeongdang functioned only for Alhyeonso or audience chamber rather than Pyeonjeon or state hall. New organizations created by the Japanese such as Chansi or secretaries office and the Chief secretary's office were included in Naejeon area.

  • This study is about the structure and transition of orthogonal design of palace architectures in Joseon Dynasty. The results are as follows. First, Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung Palaces' corridors, and their architectures seen in the Court Documentary Paintings have early Joseon style in the corner-connections. Their roof shape in the corner is gable roof. Generally, gable roof has direction. Besides, it is easy to extend gable sides. Second, Corridor of Gyeongbokgung Palace has hipped and gable roofs with corner eaves. It was popular during the late Joseon Dynasty. On the other hand, it is impossible to extend any sides of those roofs since they have roof faces in their four sides. Instead, they have completeness. That's why their aesthetic appeal exhibits more pleasing than gable roofs. Third, corner-connections of palace architecture shows evidences and traces of the transition from gable roofs meeting at right angle in the early Joseon to hipped and gable roofs meeting at right angle with corner eaves in the late Joseon. Also, the corner-connections with corner eaves were usually used even in the attached architectures.

  • Science we have perceived as genuine science is based on western scientific enterprise, that is, western modern science(WMS). The K-12 science curriculum in Korea absolutely contains WMS content. Elkana(1981) criticized the indifference of comparative science in the field of science, whereas there have been a lot of comparative studies of art, religion, ethics, and politics. Science is the product not only based on 'western' culture but all cultural around the world including Korea. People have consistently observed and tested for such a long period of time all over the world. Traditional science of Korea can be related to multiculturalism, which has become important in many fields. Korea has a lot of great scientific enterprises, such as astronomical instruments of Chosun Dynasty and ancient data of natural phenomenon in Samguk-saki or Samguk-Yusa. It is expected that students will consider them as more 'objective' and 'realistic' things rather than 'artistic' and 'distinguished' things. Astronomy was also very important in the East because they believed sky as king, which results in the development of a lot of astronomical data and instruments in Korean history. In this study, we developed three units of science programs using astronomical enterprises in Korea: 1) Activities with our sundial, Angbuilgu:, 2) data interpretation of natural phenomenon in ancient Korea, 3) experience in Gyeongbokgung Palace. From these programs, we expect that students will develop a profound understanding and take pride in our science.

  • This study analyzed the specific items and contents of district unit plan for responding to commercial gentrification on the west side of Gyeongbokgung Palace, Ikseon and Ttukseom surrounding area. By analyzing the major regulatory items and ranges currently used in the 'district unit plan' for responding to gentrification, it was intended to draw up the limitations of the district unit plan of the study target and the significant issues to be considered when establishing a district unit plan for future respond to gentrification. In the district unit plan around Seochon, Ikseon and Ttukseom surrounding area, location restrictions are imposed on franchises for responding to gentrification in common, and in the case of Ikseon and Ttukseom surrounding area, the maximum development scale is especially smaller than that of the surrounding areas. Also, in the Ttukseom surrounding area, incentives are given to the use of certain exterior materials to preserve regional characteristics.

  • Purpose This paper aims to effectively utilize user-generated content (UGC) and analyze the market structure of a relatively new market which lacks rich user review information. Specifically, we propose a domain-specific text mining tool for the domestic craft beer market and visualize the market structure by incorporating how individual beer products are positioned in the perceptual map of consumers. Design/methodology/approach We collect user review information from Naver blogs, and extract words that describe beers. We identify semantic relationships between beer products through text mining, and then depending on these semantic relationships, construct a graph representing the market structure of the domestic craft beer market based on the consumer's perceptual map. Findings First, beer products produced in the same brewery are perceived as very similar to consumers. Second, only two products, 'Heukdang Milky Stout' and 'Gompyo', was noticeably distinguishable from other products. Third, even though 'Gyeongbokgung' is from a different brewery, it is located very close to the products of 'Jeju Beer' brewery such as 'Jeju Baeknokdam Ale' and 'Seongsan Ilchulbong Ale', which suggests the influence of 'landmark series.' We successfully show that our methodology effectively describes the market structure of the craft beer market.

  • This study aims to examine the cutting traces remaining on the bracket tie beams of Sungnyemun gate, identifying the tools employed during the late Goryeo to early Joseon periods by specific processes, and deliberating on the timber shaping techniques utilized in advanced architectural construction during the late Goryeo to early Joseon eras. Through the research, it was confirmed that in the production of Sungnyemun Gate's bracket tie beams during the 14th to 15th centuries, both the timber splitting and ripsawing methods were used in conjunction. Moreover, the wood finishing process revealed the use of a plane. It can be inferred that the characteristics of the plane used during that time were not significantly different from those observed in the later period of the Joseon dynasty. The ripsawing and plane finishing techniques were evident in various parts of the bracket tie beams of Sungnyemun gate across the reigns of king Taejo and Sejong, indicating that the techniques involving ripsaw and plane were already prevalent in the late Goryeo period. Consequently, it can be inferred that the ripsawing and plane finishing techniques might have been applied in the construction of prominent government buildings in Hanyang(Seoul), including Gyeongbokgung Palace, and in the residences of royalty and nobility after the establishment of the Joseon dynasty.

  • After the Korean war, two major attempts were made to reconstruct Gwanghwamun Gate as an important part of Korea's lost cultural heritage. In December 2006, the Korean government replaced the concrete gate with a wooden one, yet traces of the attempts made in the 1960s to transform Gwanghwamun Gate and the main road remain to this day. At the time, the Third Republic of Korea, sought to legitimize itself in the name of modernity, and went on to modernize the architecture and urban landscape of Seoul. The location and design selected for the rebuilt Gwanghwamun illustrated the symbolic relationship between historic heritage and urban development. The reconstruction of the gate began as part of the Third Republic's project to restore the Central Administration Building and culminated in the transformation of the main road in front of the gate. By reconstructing the traditional gate using concrete, the military government intended to convey the message that we could inherit our proud tradition using modern materials, and that we should actively adopt the new technologies of the modern era. This study begins with the premise that the Gwanghwamun reconstruction project of 1968 represents the application of new technological thinking to Korea's architectural style, and has two objectives. The first is to summarize the reconstruction process and method using the records and drawings from the 1968 project, which was then under the leadership of architect Kang Bong-jin. The second is to analyze the characteristics of the architectural style and structure of the reconstructed Gwanghwamun so as to reinterpret the relationship between Korean tradition and modern technology.

  • The purpose of this study is to comprehend strengthening Hwaban(flower-shaped support) design in the Two-lkgong style government buildings in the late Joseon period through the T-shaped wooden shrines, the architectures of royal palace and royal ancestral shrine. Following conclusions have been reached through the study. First, Janghwaban(the long plate carved with flower-shaped support) was installed in Injeongjeon(1805) for the first time. It took 40 years to introduce Janghwaban to the government building of Two-lkgong style compared with Injeongjeon. Second, the quantity of Hwaban had been increased from 1 to 5 for 300 years in the government building of Two-lkgong style. This had been steadily increased with the aim of strengthening design. Third, there was a limit to the increase in the quantity of Hwaban. The first reason was to control the rhythm between the Hwaban and the Pobyeok(the wall between Hwabans). The second reason was that if the Pobyeok was too narrow, it was difficult to plaster. The latter was solved by introducing the Janghwaban. Fourth, in attempting to stylize differently from Jusimpo(simple bracket system), the quantity of Hwaban increase played a very important role in the government building of the Two-lkgong style. Since the reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung Palace, Hwaban combined style with Ungong served as the norm of the royal palace architecture in the last Joseon period.
