Galloping of overhead transmission lines in gusty wind

  • To develop galloping suppression devices, it is important to understand the effects of wind turbulence on galloping and to establish an evaluation method which takes 'large conductor deformations' into account. This paper introduces some findings on galloping in gusty wind obtained by numerical simulation using a model based on the Mogami Test Line of the Tokyo Electric Power Co. The equations of motion of the conductor are based on the Lagrangian formulations by Simpson, and they are made discrete in accordance with a finite element method.

  • Lighting and traffic signal columns are mainly stressed by excitation due to natural, gusty wind. Such columns typically have a door opening about 60 cm above ground level for the connection of the buried cable with the column's electric system. When the columns around this notch are inadequately designed, vibrations due to gusty winds will produce considerable stress amplitudes in this area, which lead to fatigue cracks. To give a realistic basis for a reliable and economic design of lighting and traffic signal columns, a number of experimental and theoretical investigations have been made. The proposed design concept allows the life of such columns to be assessed with a satisfactory degree of accuracy.

우리나라 태풍 내습 유형별 극한기후현상 강도와 피해 규모의 관련성 (Relationships between Intensity of Extreme Climate Events and Magnitude of Damages for Different Typhoon Tracks in the Republic of Korea)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 최근 15년(2000~2014) 간 우리나라에 경제적 피해를 야기한 태풍 내습 시 시군 지자체별 극한기후현상의 강도와 재산 피해 규모 간 관련성의 공간적 특징을 밝히는 것이다. 우리나라 전국 평균적으로 태풍 내 습 시 발생하는 피해 규모는 태풍에 의한 강풍 호우 등 극한기후현상의 강도와 최대 50%의 관련성을 나타내지만, 그 상관정도는 공간적으로 시군 행정구역별로 상이하게 나타났다. 태백산맥과 소백산맥을 경계로 남동부지역 대부분의 시군 지자체에서는 호우 강도와 재산 피해 규모 사이에 양(+)의 상관관계가 나타났지만, 북서부지역 대부분의 시군 지자체들에서는 통계적으로 유의미한 상관관계가 관찰되지 않았다. 대조적으로 강풍 강도는 일부 내륙 지역 및 북동부 산간지역을 제외하면 우리나라 대부분의 지역에서 재산 피해액과 통계적으로 유의미한 상관성을 보였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 이 연구에서 산출한 우리나라 시군별 재산 피해에 주요한 영향을 주는 극한기후현상 유형분류(호우 우세형, 호우-강풍 복합형, 강풍 우세형) 분포도는 지자체별 태풍 피해 저감 정책 수립 시 유용한 기초자료로 활용 가 능할 것으로 예상된다.

초고층건물 탁월풍 방향의 바람 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Wind Characteristics of Skyscraper Prevailing Wind Direction)

  • Since 1990s many skyscrapers have been built in Seoul. However, gusty winds occur among tall buildings by descending turbulences due to the upper air blocking. This study aims to investigate the wind characteristics of skyscraper prevailing wind direction. In order to evaluate the building wind in this area, The wind speed and the wind direction were measured using propeller type RM-Young wind monitor in this study. The maximum wind speed was recorded by 15.1 m/sec and the main wind direction is WNW and NW. The ultimate purpose of this study is to figure out the phenomena of building wind impact and also to provide essential basic data for establishing proper guidelines in building wind impact assessment for skyscrapers in Korea.

Study of wind tunnel test results of high-rise buildings compared to different design codes

  • Several international codes have been developed for evaluating wind loads on structures; however, the wind structure interaction could not be accurately captured by these codes due to the gusty nature of wind and the dynamic behavior of structures. Therefore, the alternative wind tunnel testing was introduced. In this study, an introduction to the available approaches for wind load calculations for tall buildings was presented. Then, a comparative study between different codes: the Egyptian code, ECP 201-08, ASCE 7-05, BS 6399-2, and wind tunnel test results was conducted. An investigation has been carried out on two case studies tall buildings located within the Arabian Gulf region. Numerical models using (ETABS) software were produced to obtain the relation between codes analytical values and wind tunnel experimental test results for wind loads in the along and across wind directions. Results for the main structural responses including stories forces, shears, overturning moments, lateral displacements, and drifts were presented graphically in order to give clear comparison between the studied methods. The conclusions and recommendations for future works obtained from this research are finally presented to help improving Egyptian code provisions and show limitations for different cases.

Reconstruction of gusty wind speed time series from autonomous data logger records

  • The collection of wind speed time series by means of digital data loggers occurs in many domains, including civil engineering, environmental sciences and wind turbine technology. Since averaging intervals are often significantly larger than typical system time scales, the information lost has to be recovered in order to reconstruct the true dynamics of the system. In the present work we present a simple algorithm capable of generating a real-time wind speed time series from data logger records containing the average, maximum, and minimum values of the wind speed in a fixed interval, as well as the standard deviation. The signal is generated from a generalized random Fourier series. The spectrum can be matched to any desired theoretical or measured frequency distribution. Extreme values are specified through a postprocessing step based on the concept of constrained simulation. Applications of the algorithm to 10-min wind speed records logged at a test site at 60 m height above the ground show that the recorded 10-min values can be reproduced by the simulated time series to a high degree of accuracy.

돌풍이 도로터널의 제연성능에 미치는 영향 연구 (A study on the effect of gusty wind on smoke control performance in road tunnel)

  • 도로터널의 장대화에 따른 터널 이용객의 체류시간 증가는 화재 발생 시 피난시간이 증가하여 많은 인명피해가 발생할 수 있다. 화재에 따른 인명피해를 줄이기 위해 "도로터널설계 편람 제6편 터널"과 "도로터널 방재·환기시설 설치 및 관리지침"에서는 터널의 연장에 따른 제연설비를 설치하도록 규정하고 있다. 제연설비 설계 인자에는 외부자연풍의 풍속을 최소 2.5 m/s로 고려하도록 하고 있으며, 터널의 특성에 따라 상향하여 적용하도록 하고 있다. 그러나 터널 설계 시 외부자연풍의 풍속을 2.5 m/s로 일률적인 적용을 하고 있다. 최근 6년간 대관령 지역의 5분 평균풍속 자료를 분석한 결과 바람이 분 일 수 중 15.8%가 10 m/s 이상의 바람이 분 것으로 분석되었으며, 최대 20 m/s 까지 분 것으로 분석됐다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 터널 내 화재가 발생했을 때 터널로 유입되는 자연풍의 패턴과 최대풍속에 따른 터널 화재연기의 역류거리를 분석하였다. 그 결과 20 m/s의 돌풍이 분 경우 최대 490 m의 역류가 발생하는 것으로 분석됐다.

2020 강원영동 강풍 관측에서 지상 바람의 공간 변동성 분석 (Analysis of Spatial Variability of Surface Wind during the Gangwon Yeongdong Wind Experiments (G-WEX) in 2020)

  • The recent largest forest fire in the Yeongdong region, Goseung/Okgae fires of 2019 occurred during YangGang wind event. The wind can be locally gusty and extremely dry, particularly in the complex terrain of Yeongdong. These winds can cause and/or rapidly spread wildfires, the threat of which is serious during the dry spring season. This study examines the spatial variability of the surface wind and its coupling with the upper atmospheric wind using the data during the IOP of the Gangwon Yeongdong Wind Experiments (G-WEX) conducted in 2020 and the data during YangGang wind event on 4~5 April 2019. In the case of IOPs, strong wind at the surface with a constant wind direction appears in the mountain area, and weak wind with large variability in wind direction appears from foothill to the coast in the vicinity of Gangneung region. However, in the 2019 event, strong wind at the surface with a constant wind direction appears in the entire region from the mountain to the coast, even with the stronger wind in the coast than in some part of the mountain area. The characteristics of the upper atmospheric wind related with the spatial distribution of surface wind show that during IOPs of G-WEX, a strong downdraft exists near the mountaintop in the level of about 1 to 4 km. However, in the 2019 event a strong downdraft is reinforced, when its location moves toward the coast and descends close to the ground. These downdrafts are generated by the breaking of mountain waves.

A summertime near-ground velocity profile of the Bora wind

  • While effects of the atmospheric boundary layer flow on engineering infrastructure are more or less known, some local transient winds create difficulties for structures, traffic and human activities. Hence, further research is required to fully elucidate flow characteristics of some of those very unique local winds. In this study, important characteristics of observed vertical velocity profiles along the main wind direction for the gusty Bora wind blowing along the eastern Adriatic coast are presented. Commonly used empirical power-law and the logarithmic-law profiles are compared against unique 3-level high-frequency Bora measurements. The experimental data agree well with the power-law and logarithmic-law approximations. An interesting feature observed is a decrease in the power-law exponent and aerodynamic surface roughness length, and an increase in friction velocity with increasing Bora wind velocity. This indicates an urban-like velocity profile for smaller wind velocities and rural-like velocity profile for larger wind velocities, which is due to a stronger increase in absolute velocity at each of the heights observed as compared to the respective velocity gradient (difference in average velocity among two different heights). The trends observed are similar during both the day and night. The thermal stratification is near neutral due to a strong mechanical mixing. The differences in aerodynamic surface roughness length are negligible for different time averaging periods when using the median. For the friction velocity, the arithmetic mean proved to be independent of the time record length, while for the power-law exponent both the arithmetic mean and the median are not influenced by the time averaging period. Another issue is a large difference in aerodynamic surface roughness length when calculating using the arithmetic mean and the median. This indicates that the more robust median is a more suitable parameter to determine the aerodynamic surface roughness length than the arithmetic mean value. Variations in velocity profiles at the same site during different wind periods are interesting because, in the engineering community, it has been commonly accepted that the aerodynamic characteristics at a particular site remain the same during various wind regimes.

태풍 볼라벤에 의한 제주도 방풍림 조풍(潮風) 피해 (Salty Wind Damages in Windbreak Forests of Jeju Island by Typhoon Bolaven)

  • 이 연구에서는 제주도 지역에서 태풍에 의해 야기되는 조풍(潮風) 발생 및 식생에 나타난 피해의 시 공간적 특징을 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2012년 8월 하순 제주도를 강타한 태풍 볼라벤(BOLAVEN)의 통과시 기상자료를 분석하고 이후 야외답사를 수행하여 제주도 식생에 나타난 조풍해 정도를 조사하였다. 그 결과, 조풍해는 주로 제주도 남부 및 동부 해안지역에서 발생한 것으로 나타났으며, 태풍이 동반한 강한 남동풍과 상대적으로 적은 강수량이 그 원인으로 분석되었다. 조풍에 의해 해안에서 약 8km 범위 내의 삼나무(Cryptomeria japonica)와 해안지역의 곰솔(Pinus thunbergii)을 포함한 대부분의 식생이 피해를 입었으나, 그 피해정도 및 회복력은 수종별로 차이가 있었다. 조풍에 의한 식생 피해를 줄이기 위해서는 강풍성 마른 태풍이 접근 시 조풍해 발생을 예측하고 방제대책을 마련하는 것이 필요하다.
