In recent years, many efforts are increasingly being made to conserve the natural environment with enhanced emission standards and air quality standards. Also there are various methods necessary to be researched to minimize the emission of air pollutants. In particular, boilers of industrial facilities are major portions of the air pollution. The front duct which needs to be designed to reduce the gases to the electrostatic precipitator requires a bent tube, a reduction/extend tube and an auxiliary equipment, that is, a guide vane. This paper proposes an optimum design of the guide vane by a case study for electrostatic precipitator's flow uniformity. The operating conditions of this study are as follows: BMCR (Boiler Maximum Continuous Rate) and MGR (Maximum Guaranteed Rate) are 75%, 50%, and 30%; turbulent fluid dynamics model is based upon K-${\varepsilon}$ formulation. Presentation of the computed motion of particles is found to be quite useful to predict the precipitator performance by use CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics).
In this work, a preliminary design of an inlet guide vane and runner for developing a 2.5 kW hydraulic turbine was conducted by using computational fluid dynamic analysis. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model were used to analyze the fluid flow in the hydraulic turbine. The hexahedral grid system was used to construct computational domain, and the grid dependency test was performed to obtain the optimal grid system. Velocity triangle diagram considering the flow angles of the inlet guide vane and runner was analyzed to obtain a basic geometry of the inlet guide vane and runner. Through modification of the preliminary design, the hydraulic performances of the turbine have improved under overall drop conditions. Especially, the efficiency and power of the turbine increased by 0.95% and 1.45%, respectively, compared to those of the reference model.

Ejector-diffuser system has long been used in many diverse fields of engineering applications and it has advantages over other fluid machinery, because of no moving parts and structural simplicity. This system makes use of high-pressure primary stream to entrain the low-pressure secondary stream through pure shear actions between two streams. In general, the flow field in the ejector-diffuser system is highly complicated due to turbulent mixing, compressibility effects and sometimes flow unsteadiness. A fatal drawback of the ejector system is in its low efficiency. Many works have been done to improve the performance of the ejector system, but not yet satisfactory, compared with that of other fluid machinery. In the present study, a mixing guide vane was installed at the inlet of the secondary stream for the purpose of the performance improvement of the ejector system. A CFD method has been applied to simulate the supersonic flows inside the ejector-diffuser system. The present results obtained were validated with existing experimental data. The mixing guide vane effects are discussed in terms of the entrainment ratio, total pressure loss as well as pressure recovery.

Auxiliary Power Unit of FA-50 which provides energy other than propulsion is an important element to maintain airworthiness on aircraft. Also Inlet Guide Vane of Auxiliary Power Unit is a device that supplies appropriate airflow into the Auxiliary Power Unit after adjusting influent airflow into the load compressor. This report, based on the problems occurred the driving gears of Inlet Guide Vane, deals with cause of occurrence, troubleshooting, design improvement and result of test flight verification for FA-50 aircraft Auxiliary Power Unit lifespan.

In the cavitation tunnel, the first corner playes role for the flow direction to execute 90-degree turn. So, energy loss is serious, and the cavitation phenomena well occur in the guide vane surface. In this paper, the flow in the first corner was numerically calculated. From the calculation result, cavitation phenomena mainly occurred in the suction side of the last guide vane and vicinity that vane and tunnel wall adjoin each other. And bubbles occurred from all guide vanes if the flow velocity in the test section reaches the any critical value. We could analogize with our experience in the water tunnel that bubbles that occurred in time not vanish, and become miniature in the flow although the pressure recover. So, they circulate with flow in the tunnel, and come into view in the test section. Therefore, first corner must be designed for bubbles not to appear in the test section according to the flow condition like velocity and pressure demanded by the experiment. We analyzed flow in case that the first elbow configuration was redesigned and some of the existing guides vanes were eliminated. And we presented that first elbow can be easely designed for the improvement of tunnel performance through the computational analysis.
The three-dimensional flow in a turbine nozzle guide vane passage causes large secondary loss through the passage and increased heat transfer on the blade surface. In order to reduce or control these secondary flows, a linear cascade with a contoured endwall configuration was used and changes in the three-dimensional flow field were analyzed and discussed. Measurements of secondary flow velocity and total pressure loss within the passage have been performed by means of five-hole probes. The investigation was carried out at fixed exit Reynolds number of $4.0{\times}10^5$. The objective of this study is to document the development of the three-dimensional flow in a turbine nozzle guide vane cascade with modified endwall. The results show that the development of passage vortex and cross flow in the cascade composed of one flat and one contoured endwalls are affected by the flow acceleration which occurs in contoured endwall side. The overall loss is reduced near the flat endwall rather than contoured endwall.

The present study is aimed to develop an integrated performance analysis approach for the application of a compressor with variable inlet guide vane (VIGV) and vairable stator vane (VSV) in a small turbofan engine. For the integrated analysis approach, an engine performance analysis program, NPSS and a computer program used for predicting of axial flow compressor performance based on stage stacking method, STGSTK were linked with an optimisation package, Isight. This enables off-design performance analysis for the turbofan engine with VIGV and VSV hence provides the capability to predict stable operation condition of the engine with acceptable surge margin.

An analysis model for off-design performance of radial inflow turbines with or without variable area guide vane is developed, where two important factors in loss models, total pressure ratio between variable area guide vane exit and scroll casing inlet and rotor loss coefficient are determined without experimental data. The analysis results show that the predicted trends with or without variable area guide vane are consistent with the experimental observations. The comparison of present method with the well-known NASA off-design performance analysis program shows that the mass flow rate and static efficiency by present analysis are in good agreement with those by the NASA program. Therefore, this method can be used to predict off-design performance of radial inflow turbines with validity of the loss models used by present analysis.

Generally the variable guide vane is used to secure the sufficient operating point in the off-design condition. In this study the inlet guide vane, 1st and 2nd stators in a multi-stage axial compressor are movable to obtain the operating range. So the effects of variable guide vane setting angle on the performance of 2.5 stage axial compressor were investigated at 70 % and 90 % conditions of nominal rotating speed in this paper. The steady-state and unsteady numerical analyses were conducted at each operating condition. The performance map, lost efficiency and flow fields were compared.

This paper deals with the performance analysis of impulse turbine for owe type wave energy conversion device. Numerical analysis was performed using a commercially-available software FLUENT. This parametric study includes the variation of the setting angle of guide vane. Since parametric study at various flaw coefficients requires tremendous amounts of computing time, two-dimensional cascade flaw approximation was employed to find out optimum principal particulars in rather simple manner. Full three-dimensional calculation was also performed for several cases to confirm the validity of two-dimensional approach. Results were compared to other experimental data, for instance Setoguchi et al (2001)'s extensive set of data, and found to be well demonstrating the usefulness of 2-D analysis. Advantages and disadvantages of each method were also evaluated.
