  • The European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner) has been known as only one species of genus Ostrinia in Korea. After Mutuura and Munroe(1970) revised the genus Ostrinia, the name of the corn stem borer in Korea has been very confused. The critical examination of the external morphology and the genitalia revealed that species of the genus Ostrinia occurring in Korea are O. fyrbacakus (Guenee, O. scapulalis (Walker), O. zaguliaevi Mut. & Mun. and O. zealis (Guenee)

  • Haemolyph carboxylesterases induced in diapausing pupae of Helicoverpa assulta Guenee were investigated. Increase in the activity of the electrophoresed isozyme bands were observed during the diapausing pupae. The isozymatic composition exhibited remarkable alterations represented as disappearance and induction of some isozyme bandsp which were identified as carboxylesterase (CE) on the basis of their specificities to inhibitors. Much higher activity of the induced CE was shown in reaction with $\beta$-naphthyl acetate ($\beta$-Na) than $\alpha$-naphthyl butyrate ($\alpha$-Nb), representing the high regioselectivity to $\beta$-naphthyl group. Optimal temperature for the enzyme activity was different to the substrates used 37$^{\circ}C$ in $\beta$-Na and 4$0^{\circ}C$ in $\alpha$-Nb, respectively. However, the optimal pH for the enzyme activity was the same as 7.5 regardless of the substrates used, and relatively high thermostability of the CE was demonstrated by showing the denaturation at high temperature (50~55$^{\circ}C$).

  • Studies were carried out to investigate changes of lipid and carbohydrate contents in the hemolymph of the Oriental tobacco budworm(Helicoverpa assulta (Guenee» adults during flight and hormonal effects on mobilization of energy sources in the hemolymph. During a few minutes after flight, both sexes showed a rapid increase in lipid content and the high level was maintained for about 2 hours. But carbohydrate content in the hemolymph during flight showed almost no change but a slight increase seen during the first 10 min of flight in males only. Synthetic adipokinetic(Lom-AKH- n), hypertrehalosemic(Bld-HrTH) hormones and brain/ corpora cardiaca extract of H. assulta adult elevated lipid and carbohydrate contents in hemolymph and the effect was much more pronounced for lipid. These results suggested that lipid is a main fuel for flight activity and lipid mobilization is under the hormonal control. And this study showed that both adipokinetic and hypertrehalosemic factors may exist in H. assulta and these factors may have similar structures to those of Mas-AKH, Hez-HrTH, Lom-AKH- n or Pea-HrTH.

  • A storage protein(SP-2) was confirmed in haemolymph during larval-pupal-adult development of tobacco burdworm(Helicoverpa assulta Guenee), and its biochemical characteristics were investigated. The titer of SP-2 showed a peak at mature larva, decreased gradually through the late pupal stage, and became undetectable at adult period. As the results from electrophoretic mnysis, SP-2 was confirmed to be glycolipoprotein(M.W. 332kDa) relatively stable to heat( $\leq$ 68$^{\circ}C$ ). This storage protein was determined to be a tetramer composed of a single subunit with MW of 83kDa, and the isoelectric point was 5.7. The amino acid composition of the SP-2 was characterized. It has relatively high content of methionine and histidine, whereas the contents of tyrosine and phenylalanine were relatively low.

  • The spermatogenesis and chromosome number were investigated in the pupal testes of Helicouerpa assulta Guenee by light microscopy. During the spermatogenesis, each bundle of P8(256) sperms developed by 6 mitotic and 2 meiotic spermatogonial divisions. From the early stage of spermatogenesis, it was distinguishable between two kinds of sperm differentiation, eupyrene and apyrene spermatogenesis, which are characteristic in Lepidoptera, by the differences in nuclear shape and cell distribution in immature spermatocyst. Through the followed spermiogenesis, the spermatocysts were developed into two kinds of mature cyst, a streamline-shaped eupyrene cyst with nucleated sperms of thready head or a long spindle-shaped apyrene cyst with anucleated sperms of cylindrical head. As the results off chromosomal analysis at metaphase of the spermatogonial mitosis and spermatocytic meiosis, the chromosome number were 2n=6a/n=31, respectively, and no variation between individuals.

  • A nuclear polyhedrosis virus isolated from the oriental tobacco budworm larvae, Helicoverpa assulta (Guenee) was characterized by electron microscopy, SDS-PAGE, restriction endonuclease analysis and cross infectivity. The shape of a polyhedron was $1.0\mu\textrm{m}$ in average with icosahdral outline, and the virus particle was $65nm\times300nm$ in average with rod-shape. The nuclear polyhedrosis virus was contained a single nucleocapsid within a viral envelope embedded in a polyhedron. The polyhedral protein was composed of a single polypeptide with a M.W. of 31 Kd. The genome size of the virus by restriction endonuclease analysis was about 120 Kb. Among several nuclear polyhedrosis viruses, the nuclear polyhedrosis virus from Helicoverpa assulta (HaNPV) and Autographa california nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcNPV) were infected the oriental tobacco budworm larvae.

  • The damage by fruit-piercing moths in orchards, primarily on grapes cultivated on reclaimed hillsides in Koksung, Cholla Namdo, was surveyed during July to October, 1974. Moths collected at night, mostly with the aid of flash light, were then classified. Results are summairzed as follows; 1. In addition to the 14 species of fruit-piercing moths reported in Korea, 11 new species were collected lot the first time ia Korea. These include. Speiredonia retorta Clerck, Cocytodes coerulea Guenee, Metopta rectifasciata Menetries, Ophideres fullonica Linnaeus, Serrodes campana Guenee, Mythimna turca Linnaeus, Amphipyra livida Schiffermuller et Denis, Paralleia maturata Walker, Ophiusa tirhaca Cramer, Anomis mesogona Walker and Thyas dotata Fabricius. 2. The maximum emergence of moths in Koksung Orchard was from the 10th to the end of September. Only a few moths were observed befroe the begining of August or after October 10. 3. The number of moths flying to grape vines increased as the time advanced from sunset to midnight. Populations gradually decreased thereafter until 5:30 a. m., when only occasional moths were observed. 4. Average damage to grape fruits by these insects was virtually nil until August 10; with subsequent infestation rates of $1.0\%$ on August 15, $17.6\%$ on September 26, and $20.3%$ on October 4, respectively. 5. Fruits of less than 10 percent sugar content and higher than 6.2 acid value were free from damage by these moths, and those of higher sugar content and lower acid value to be more heavily attacked.
