This study aimed to identify plant growth-promoting activity, phytopathogenic fungi growth inhibitory activity, mineral solubilization ability, and extracellular enzyme activity of the genus Bacillus in soil and the rhizosphere. With regards to antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi, DDP257 showed antifungal activity against all 10 pathogenic fungi tested. ANG20 showed the highest ability to produce indole-3-acetic acid, a plant growth-promoting factor (70.97 ㎍/ml). In addition, 10 species were identified to have 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase production ability, and most isolates showed nitrogen fixation and siderophore production abilities. Thereafter, the isolated strains' ability to solubilize minerals such as phosphate, calcite, and zinc was identified. With extracellular enzyme activity, the activity appeared in most enzymes. In particular, all the strains showed similar abilities for alkaline phosphatase, esterase (C4), acid phosphatase, and naphtol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase production. This result was observed because the genus Bacillus secreted various organic substances, antibiotics, and extracellular enzymes. Therefore, through the results of this study, we suggest the possibility of using strains contributing to the improvement of the soil environment as microbial agents.
To cultivate pine mushroom (Tricholoma matsutake) artificially, co-cultivation with microorganisms has been introduced. Here, experiments were performed to assess the growth-promoting effect of bacteria on T. matsutake mycelia. Bacteria were isolated from soil samples collected in Yangyang County, Korea. Four of the bacterial isolates (Y22_B06, Y22_B11, Y22_B18, and Y22_B22) exhibited a growth-promoting effect on T. matsutake mycelia (154.67%, 125.91%, 134.06%, and 158.28%, respectively). To analyze the characteristics of the bacteria, especially the antifungal activity, 𝛼-amylase and cellulase activity assays were performed. In comparison with the controls, the isolated bacteria exhibited low 𝛼-amylase and cellulase activity. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed to identify the four bacterial isolates. The isolates belonged to the Terrabacteria group and were identified as Microbacterium paraoxydans, Paenibacillus castaneae, Peribacillus frigoritolerans, and P. butanolivorans. These bacterial isolates are expected to have contributed to the growth promotion of T. matsutake mycelia and the artificial cultivation of T. matsutake.

The role of exopolysaccharides (EPSs) from a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium, Burkholderia gladioli IN26, on elicitation of induced systemic resistance was investigated. A purified EPS induced expression of PR-1a::GUS on tobacco and elicited induced resistance against Colletotrichum orbiculare on cucumber. The maximum level of disease protection was noted when seeds were soaked in 200 ppm of the EPS. Our results indicate that EPS from specific rhizobacteria can elicit induced resistance and suggest that bacterial EPS might be a useful elicitor of resistance under field conditions.

A rapid increase in population is most likely to become a menace to human existence, and will cause unfavorable effects. Therefore, we must consider it as an urgent task to make use of marine resources in various ways. Korea particularly laks potential resources, so has no other way but to exploit and utilize the resources for its overall economic growth. In therms of these viewpoints. this report studies the constructive measures and programme for promoting Korean marine industry education after reassessing the aspects of marine industry and analyzing the present situation and problems of the Korean science and technology today. Under these circumstances. it is suggested that financial and administrative support be afforded by government and the authorities concerned for the reformation of curriculum and educational system, inverstment growth for improving educational environments and research conditions. In addition, administrators and teachers are expected to exert their utmost efforts to bring ahout encouraging results in the marine industry education.
Three plant growth-promoting yeasts and two rhizobacteria were tested for controlling tomato wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici under green-house and field conditions. Under greenhouse and field conditions, all treatments were significantly reduced disease severity of tomato wilt relative to the infected control. The highest disease reductions in pots (75.0, 67.4%) and field (52.5, 42.4%) were achieved by Azospirillum brasilense and Bacillus subtilis compared to infected control. Under field condition all treatments produced the highest tomato yield compared to the control plants inoculated with the pathogen.

The ginseng growth-promoting bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens KGPP 207 synthesized indole-3- acetic acid (IAA) from L-tryptophan, indole-3-pyruvic acid (IPyA), and indole-3-acetaldehyde (IAAld), but not from indole-3-acetamide (lAM) and other intermediates of various IAA biosynthetic pathways in the experiment with indole compound supplemented cell suspensions. TLC, HPLC, and GC-MS analyses revealed the presence of IPyA, indole-3-ethanol, indole-3-lactic acid and its methyl ester, IAA and its methyl, and ethyl esters in the culture supernatant of the bacterium. IAAld was detected in the supernatant using sodium bisulfite and TLC. The results indicate that unlike gall-forming bacteria which can synthesize IAA by lAM, the indole-3-pyruvic acid pathway is the route for IAA biosynthesis in this beneficial strain of P. fluorescens.

A series of experiments were conducted to assess the effectiveness of rhizobacteria containing 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase for growth promotion of peas under drought conditions. Ten rhizobacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of different crops (peas, wheat, and maize) were screened for their growth promoting ability in peas under axenic condition. Three rhizobacterial isolates, Pseudomonas fluorescens biotype G (ACC-5), P. fluorescens (ACC-14), and P. putida biotype A (Q-7), were selected for pot trial on the basis of their source, ACC deaminase activity, root colonization, and growth promoting activity under axenic conditions. Inoculated and uninoculated (control) seeds of pea cultivar 2000 were sown in pots (4 seeds/pot) at different soil moisture levels (25, 50, 75, and 100% of field capacity). Results revealed that decreasing the soil moisture levels from 100 to 25% of field capacity significantly decreased the growth of peas. However, inoculation of peas with rhizobacteria containing ACC deaminase significantly decreased the "drought stress imposed effects" on growth of peas, although with variable efficacy at different moisture levels. At the lowest soil moisture level (25% field capacity), rhizobacterial isolate Pseudomonas fluorescens biotype G (ACC-5) was found to be more promising compared with the other isolates, as it caused maximum increases in fresh weight, dry weight, root length, shoot length, number of leaves per plant, and water use efficiency on fresh and dry weight basis (45, 150, 92, 45, 140, 46, and 147%, respectively) compared with respective uninoculated controls. It is highly likely that rhizobacteria containing ACC deaminase might have decreased the drought-stress induced ethylene in inoculated plants, which resulted in better growth of plants even at low moisture levels. Therefore, inoculation with rhizobacteria containing ACC deaminase could be helpful in eliminating the inhibitory effects of drought stress on the growth of peas.
