Purpose: Somatic growth is an important indicator of health in children. Adequate organ growth is essential in growth and directly related to body growth. We consider renal length as a surrogate of organ growth in growing children. Measurement of weight, height, and many anthropometric indices, such as body surface area (BSA), body mass index (BMI), and Rohrer and Kaup indices, are used to evaluate growth status. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between renal length and somatic parameters and analyze the affecting factors for renal size during growth. Methods: The data for renal length in 66 children (age, $12.9{\pm}15.6$ months; male/female, 34/32) were obtained. Each kidney was measured with ultrasonography and dimercaptosuccinic acid scan. The data on age, sex, height, and weight were obtained from the medical records. BSA, BMI, and Rohrer and Kaup indices were calculated from measured height and weight. BSA was calculated by 2 methods, and is expressed as BSA I and BSA II. Results: There were significant correlations between renal size and age, weight, height, BSA I, BSA II, and Rohrer index. In the regression analysis, the most significant contributing factor to renal growth was height ($R^2$=0.636, $P$ <0.001). Conclusion: Height seems to be the most important factor associated with organ growth in growing children. Further studies to evaluate adequate organ growth should be carried out.
This study was undertaken to assess nutritional status of the low income elderly residing in Gwangju. Anthropometric data showed that mean height of the subjects was lower than that of Korean Standard Growth data but weight was similar to that standard value. As the subjects became older, their heights and weights were decreased. Body mass index (BMI) in males and females were 22.9 and 24.4 respectively. However, BMI distribution showed that 56% of the elderly females under 75 were underweight. Advancing age conoibutes significant difference in triceps skinfold thickness in females (p < 0.001). Total cholesterol level was higher in the elderly females than the males. It was found that a considerable number of subjects had anemia determined by hemoglobin and hematocrit level, which indicated un iron deficiency. Twenty-four hour dietary recall revealed that, except for phosphorus and vitamin C, all the nutrient intakes of the subjects were below 75% of Korean RDA. Surprisingly, vitamin A and riboflavin intakes of the elderly were below 50% of Korean RDA. Energy intakes of the elderly males and females were 58.7% and 59.6% of Korean RDA respectively. Unbalanced energy ratios of carbohydrate, protein and fat were noted in both genders. Nutrient intakes of females' were lower than those of males'. Thus, there was a significant gender difference in nutrient intakes. It might be further suggested that an appropriate nutritional program should be developed and implemented to improve the Poor nutritional status of the low income elderly living in cities.
The Lake (Victoria) zone of Tanzania, which has the least forest resources in the country, is a potential economic growth zone in the country. Therefore, this study analyses the impact of implemented forest policies on the status of forest resources in the area, given the unique features. The study identifies the status of forested lands in the area, and then fits binary logistic regression to identify the impact of policies related elements (i.e. type of forest, type of management) on the status; forest area and location (region) are used as control variables. Results show that 63% of the forested land in the area is destructed; main activities being agriculture, residential, firewood, and charcoal burning activities. Logistic results showed natural forests, forests located in Geita region, forests managed by municipal councils are more likely to be destructed; while plantation forests, forests located in Kagera region, privately managed forests are less likely to be destructed. Thus, the study concludes that policies and measures are not enough for the preservation of forest resources in the area; some of the economic activities in the area are occurring at the expenses of the forests; hence recommend more sustainable development plans and incorporating different crossing cutting sectors in the policies.
This study focuses on the factors that make the financing decision of private hospitals in Korea. Data used in this study were collected from 98 hospitals with complete general data of current status as well as financial statements. They were chosen from the 138 hospitals that passed the accreditation process by the Korean Hospital Association from 1996 to 2000 for the purpose of accrediting training hospitals. The dependent variables in this study consist of total liabilities to total assets, borrowings to total assets. The independent variables are ownership, hospital type, teaching status, location, bed size, period of establishment, asset structure, profitability, growth, tax shields, volatility of profit, competition(market concentration), and other factors. The major findings of this study are as follows. The factors found to have significant effect on liabilities to total assets are teaching status(-), asset structure(-), profitability(-), tax shields(+), and business risk(-). University hospitals have less liabilities than the non-university hospitals. It was also confirmed that high profitability, high fixed asset, high volatility of profit and low tax shields results in decrease in liabilities. The factors that significantly affect on borrowings to total assets are teaching status(-), period of establishment(-), volatility of profit(-) and competition(+).

Purpose: To explore the level of health status and health promotion lifestyle, and the group differences in health promotion lifestyle among Seoul citizens who participated in free hypertension screening. Methods: This study was a cross sectional descriptive design. The administered questionnaire included the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP II), perceived health status scale, and demographic questions. Blood pressure was measured by researcher teams. Data were collected from July 2 to 6, 2004 in the waiting area of subway stations 7 in Seoul. The study subjects were 168 adults. Results: The average age of the respondents was 55.45 years and 38.7% of them perceived themselves as healthy, while 44% did not know their own blood pressure. Among the participants, 44.6% were classified as 'prehypertensive', and 36.9% as having high blood pressure. The mean score of health promotion lifestyle was 2.62 and the order of subcategories of health promotion lifestyle was interpersonal relationship, spiritual growth, nutrition, stress management, physical activities, and health responsibilities. The subcategories of health promotion lifestyle differed significantly by age, sex, job, and smoking. Conclusions: It is important to encourage adults to participate actively in health promotion. In addition, health promotion programs should be developed and implemented based on group differences.
Services could move over the world where they want to go. Especially, travel services shared 29.4 percent of total world exports, 625 billion dollars in 2004 (WTO, 2005). Tourism is a very important sector in service trade in the world. Of developing countries, Korea has been experiencing remarkable development in female outbound travel market since the complete liberalization on overseas travels in 1989, with about 3.85 million travelers in 2005, 2,000 percent growth rate over 1988. It means woman's social status has been increasing in Korea. Especially, in the study young housekeepers, solely office ladies, and college students were described as very important market segments in Korean woman outbound travel market. They were not only major decision makers, but also executors because of both enough economic power and social status improvement on small sized family. This study indicated that woman outbound travel market gets larger because their buying power and status are going to go improved in Korean social system. It is recommended that marketers be worth watching Korean woman travellers as a major target market through continuos observation and analysis.
In Korea, several national cross-sectional surveys monitor the diet, nutritional status, and health status of children. This continual dedicated national surveillance system contributes to the identification of nutritional and health issues, establishment of public health policies, and development of nutrition recommendations. This paper provides recent information about the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey and describes key nationwide survey findings published in the last 5 years on infant feeding practices and the dietary intake and nutritional status of Korean infants, children, and adolescents. There have been increasing trends in children, and teenagers who skip breakfast, eat fast food, consume sugary drinks, have vitamin D deficiency, and are obese. This review will inform pediatricians, nutritionists, and other health care practitioners who track children's growth and development. It may also help researchers and policymakers identify diet-related policies and strategies for chronic disease prevention in Korean infants, children, and adolescents.
Background: Methyl donor status influences DNA stability and DNA methylation although little is known about effects on DNA methyltransferases. The aim of this study was to determine whether methyl-donor status influences DNA methyltransferase (Dnmt) gene expression in cervical cancer cells, and if so, whether there are associated effects on global DNA methylation. Materials and Methods: The human cervical cancer cell line, C4-II, was grown in complete medium and medium depleted of folate (F-M+) and folate and methionine (F-M-). Growth rate, intracellular folate, intracellular methionine and homocysteine in the extracellular medium were measured to validate the cancer cell model of methyl donor depletion. Dnmt expression was measured by qRT-PCR using relative quantification and global DNA methylation was measured using a flow cytometric method. Results: Intracellular folate and methionine concentrations were significantly reduced after growth in depleted media. Growth rate was also reduced in response to methyl donor depletion. Extracellular homocysteine was raised compared with controls, indicating disturbance to the methyl cycle. Combined folate and methionine depletion led to a significant down-regulation of Dnmt3a and Dnmt3b; this was associated with an 18% reduction in global DNA methylation compared with controls. Effects of folate and methionine depletion on Dnmt3a and 3b expression were reversed by transferring depleted cells to complete medium. Conclusions: Methyl donor status can evidently influence expression of Dnmts in cervical cancer cells, which is associated with DNA global hypomethylation. Effects on Dnmt expression are reversible, suggesting reversible modulating effects of dietary methyl donor intake on gene expression, which may be relevant for cancer progression.
The current study aims to identify the heterogeneous changes of functional disabilities in old age rather than to identify an average longitudinal pattern and to explore the effect of health status and social status as risk factors in functional disability trajectories. The sample consisted of a representative sample of community dwellers aged 65 and older from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2006 - 2012) was the focus of the study. Latent Class Growth Analysis was used to identify the functional disability trajectory groups. Variables regarding health status and social status changes by class were identified using multinomial logistic regression. The results showed various change patterns in functional disability, which include independent (78%), stable high (4.4%), steeply increasing (7.1%), slightly increasing (5.5%), and moderate to low (4.7%). Aggravation in depressive symptoms and cognitive functions as well as decline in social participations and social engagements were significant predictors of membership in increasing group of functional disability. The findings provide important initial empirical information to target clinical practice and have implications in the importance of conducting research on groups with different characteristics.

Glasses industry has great growth potential from the future-oriented perspective in Korea. In consideration of the fact that the ratio of aging population increases in this aging society, people have more and more interest in health. Also, their recognition on the cycle to change glasses is changing, and the utility of them as fashion items is increasing day by day, it is expected that the demand for glasses will be even more extended afterwards. Of course, presently it suffers from the gap between cheaper items and expensive ones provided by overseas prominent brands due to the bi-polarization of the market. However, they are pursuing the 2nd growth as export-leading items in the past through international glass exhibitions based on knowhow accumulated for a long time. Therefore, this study aims to examine the current status of glasses design industry in Korea reflecting the actual situations we have now and also understand the problems and limitations internalized in our glass design industry through the research process. As a result, the study has drawn the following conclusions. This paper intends to point out first, the phenomenon of bi-polarization of the glass market in Korea. Second, unequal distribution by region centering around Daegu. Third, the limitations of brand identity. Fourth, the limitations of information, planning, and marketing power. Fifth, passive conduction of international events and their insufficient effects. This study concludes that all these problems can be solved through 'planning and design, and marketing power'.
