A STUDY ON THE FACIAL MORPHOLOGY AND GROWTH CHANGES IN UNILATERAL CLEFT LIP AND PALATE PATIENTS ACCORDING TO THE AGES (연령에 따른 편측성 순구개열자의 안모형태 변화에 관한 연구)

  • Orthodontic treatment of cleft patients is difficult as the growth is different from that of normal ones. So it is very important to know the characteristic features of the craniofacial morphology and growth pattern in unilateral cleft lip and palate patients. The materials for this study consisted of 55 normal males and 50 unilateral cleft lip and palate ones who received cheiloplasty and palatoplasty previously. The cleft subjects were divided into 4 groups according to their ages kto find out the growth pattern of hard and soft tissue, and to compare the features with those of normal ones. Each cephalogram analysed by McNamara method and others. The obtained results were as follows 1. In the unilateral cleft lip and palate subjects, forward growth of the maxilla was smaller than that of normal ones from 9 years old. So the maxilla was retruded. The maxillary incisors were severely retruded in all age groups. 2. The mandibular overall length and its anteroposterior position did not show any significant differences between two groups. But the height of ramus was very short and the mandible had vertical growth tendency to compensate for undergrowth of the maxilla in cleft subjects after 12 years of age. 3. Horizontal growth of the soft tissue in middle face was smaller than that of any other facial region from 9 years old. The vertical growth rate of upper lip was decreased as growing old. 4. In cleft subjects, the upper and lower facial component angle and the facial convexity angle were large. So their facial profile changed to straight or concave as growing old.

Influence of Cu(II) on the Growth of Korean Tadpole, Rana nigromaculata (銅이온이 참개구리 幼生의 成長에 미치는 影響)

  • The author hatched the eggs of Korean frog, Rana nigromaculata in natural water, and reared the tadpoles in natural water as control group and in seven copper ion groups contaminated by 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 ppm of copper ion. The influences of copper ion on the growth of the tadpoles were analyzed, and the results were summarized as follows: 1) The copper ion inhibited the growth of the tadpole. 2) The tadpoles were not survived for 20 days in the copper ion of 0.4~0.5ppm, and in the 0.7ppm, the tadpoles were not survived for 1 day after hatch. 3) The critical lethal concentration of Korean tadpole is regarded as 0.6ppm of copper ion. 4) The growth of head with and body length show a convexin increase pattern. 5) In the growth quantity of head width and body length, that of natural water shows the most rapid increase pattern, and that of the copper ion groups 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3ppm follows in that order. 6) The coefficient of relative growth($\alpha$) of control group is the greatest value, and that of the copper ion groups of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3ppm follows in that order. The natural water shows the positive allometry, the contaminated groups shows the negative allometry in the relative growth of the contaminated groups to the natural water. 7) Body length shows positive allometry in the relative growth to head width.

  • To know the variation in the growth of the sea urchin, Pseudocentrotus depressus according to their localities, three different populations including the culture populations, the released populations, and the wild populations were investigated using the cluster analysis. For this purpose, pigment banding pattern on the genital plate was used as an age character. The population composed of the same year class was born between September 25th and October 5th every year. The population of 9 to 10 months old had no $r_1,\;whereas\;r_1$, was observed in the population of either 1 year and 10 or 11 months old, and both $r_1,\;and\;r_2$ in the population of either 2 year and 9 or 10 months old. Therefore, $r_1,\;and\;r_2$ radius were regarded as an annual ring. Growth in the culture populations was much better than that In either the released or the wild populations. However, when the cultured populations composed of 8 to 12 mm in test diameter was released to the shove near a culture farm, its growth appeared to be similar to that of the wild Populations. The wide distribution patterns of test diameter measured from the same year class of both the cultured and the wild populations were probably due to either long spawning period or growth differences between individuals. Except Yamaguchi and Cheju populations, the move closely located populations showed the more similar growth pattern. However, the growth of Cheju population appeared to be similar to that of Aba, Mogi, Toishi rather than Kasiwazima although Cheju Island was more closely located with Kasiwazima than other localities. In addition, the population of Yamaguchi, located at the highest latitute, revealed the similar growth pattern to that of Nomozaki, located at the lowest latitute.

  • For 6H-SiC crystals which was obtained by sublimation growth, the formation of micropipes and internal planar defects was discussed in consideration of the inter-relationship between mass adsorption behavior and the defects origin on the growth interface on the basis of KSV theory and the the step growth pattern on the vicinal plane. Micropipes and planar defects was formed in the region which the step could not be grown by impurities impinging. It was realized that the internal defects formation was related to the crystallographic step planes formed on the growth interface and the migration of the molecules adsorbed on it.

  • Mercurous Bromide ($Hg_2Br_2$) crystals hold promise for many acousto-optic and opto-electronic applications. This material is prepared in closed ampoules by the physical vapor transport (PVT) growth method. We investigate the effects of solutal convection on the crystal growth rate in a horizontal configuration for diffusive-convection conditions and purely diffusion conditions achievable in a low gravity environment. Our results show that the growth rate is decreased by a factor of one-fourth with a ten reduction of gravitational acceleration near y = 2.0 cm. For 0.1 $g_O$ the growth rate pattern exhibits relatively flat which is intimately related to diffusion-dominated processes. The growth rate nonuniformity is regardless of aspect ratio across the interfacial positions from 0 to 1.5. Also, the effect of a factor of the ten reduction in the gravitational acceleration is same to both Ar = 5 and 2. The enlargement in the molecular weight of B from 50 to 500 by a factor 4 causes a decrease in the maximum growth rate by the same factor, indicative of the effect of solutal gradients.

  • Antioxidant and redox enzyme activities are known to be involved in the cellular responses to various stresses. Their variations were observed according to the growth cycle of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Peroxidase activity appeared to be notably higher in the early exponential phase than in the mid-exponential and stationary phases. However, catalase activity showed a variation pattern resembling the growth curve. Glutathione S-transferase activity was higher in the early exponential and late stationary phases. Activities of the two redox enzymes, thioredoxin and thioltransferase (glutaredoxin), were high in the stationary phase. However, their activities appeared to increase from the early exponential to mid-exponential phase. Total glutathione content had a varying pattern similar to that of thioredoxin and thioltransferase. However, its content in the early exponential phase was high. These results propose that antioxidant and redox enzymes tested are also involved in the mechanism of cell growth.

  • In experiment 1, dietary self-selection of the 3 macronutrients, protein, fat, and carbohydrate were examined in male rats given 3 food cups of 80% carbohydrate, 80% protein, and 70% fat diets simultaneously. All the rats showed normal growth pattern and organ weight, which means they have ability to select just right kinds and amounts of nurients in order to support their growth and development. Mean values of caloric intake, body weight gain, serum lipid values and empty carcass compositions were not significantly differ between the upper and lower quartile groups of fat proportion of empty carcass compared to the lower quartile group(LF). Same feeding design was employed in experiment 2 where the effect of mild electric stress on food selection was studied. The rats in both control and electric stress group revealed a normal growth curve and organ weights. The stress group showed higher caloric intake and body weight gain than control group, but no significant effects of stress on serum and empty carcass components was found. Even though normal rats seemed to select macronutrients according to their physiolosical needs, there were individual differences in food selection whether they were exposed to stress or not. Therefore life long individual food selection pattern may have a great influence on nutritional status and chronic degenerative diseases of eldery, and on aging process.

Population Biology of Korean Pomfret Pampus echinogaster (Basilewsky, 1855) (Perciformes: Stromateidae) on the Western Coast of Korea, Yellow Sea

  • Investigations were made on population biology of Pampus echinogaster (Basilewsky, 1855) in the coastal areas of Korea, Yellow Sea, between August 2005 and July 2006. Population structure was not significantly different between male and females. Monthly variation of gonadosomatic index (GSI) of both sexes defined spawning period extending from March through July. A similar pattern was also observed in change at maturity stages. For males and females GSI was positively correlated with hepatosomatic index (HSI). Fecundity, ranging from 41,250 to 103,610 eggs, was related to body size, indicating that body size is the useful determinant of fecundity. The sexual maturity ($L_{50}$) was estimated as 14.98 cm TL for males and 19.32 cm TL for females. Parameters of growth estimated by the modified von Bertalanffy growth function model showed that the values of $L_{\infty}$ and K for combined data were 39.12 cm TL and 0.65 $yr^{-1}$. The growth performance index of this study (2.75) was higher than that of the previous study (2.45). This difference could be attributed to sampling method. The recruitment patterns indicated one normally distributed group. Percentage of the recruitment was 51.04% in the spawning season and the highest in August (19.78%).

Effect of Altitude and Tuber Weight on the Growth and Yield of Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Breit (해발고도별 반하 종구 무게가 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • The plant growth and yield of Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Breit. were studied by altitude and tuber weight. The emergence rates in low land area were not different by tuber weights, but it showed earlier emergence date in heavier weight of seed-tuber and low land area. The higher aerial growth such as plant height and number of leaves per plant was the heavier tuber weight in a planting year, but the growth was not different by the weight of tuber at second year after planting. The distribution pattern of tuber size per $m^2$ was not influenced by different seed-tuber weight. The number of harvested tuber was highest at more than 1 g of tuber weight, and followed 1~2 g and less than 2 g. The distribution pattern of fresh tuber yield was not influenced by different altitude and seed-tuber weight. The marketable tuber, 2 g or more, tends to be produced with more than 0.6 g seed-tuber. As the results above-mentioned, it was thought that the high yield was supposed to use seed-tuber over 0.6 g in the fertile soil.

Effect of the O2/N2 Ratio on the Growth of TiO2 Nanowires via Thermal Oxidation (열 산화를 이용한 TiO2 나노선의 성장에 미치는 O2/N2 가스비의 영향)

  • $TiO_2$ nanowires were grown by thermal oxidation of TiO powder in an oxygen and nitrogen gas environment at $1000^{\circ}C$. The ratio of $O_2$ to $N_2$ in an ambient gas was changed to investigate the effect of the gas ratio on the growth of $TiO_2$nanowires. The oxidation process was carried out at different $O_2$/$N_2$ ratios of 0/100, 25/75, 50/50 and 100/0. No nanowires were formed at $O_2$/$N_2$ ratios of less than 25/75. When the $O_2$/$N_2$ ratio was 50/50, nanowires started to form. As the gas ratio increased to 100/0, the diameter and length of the nanowires increased. The X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the nanowires were $TiO_2$ with a rutile crystallographic structure. In the XRD pattern, no peaks from the anatase and brookite structures of $TiO_2$were observed. The diameter of the nanowires decreased along the growth direction, and no catalytic particles were detected at the tips of the nanowires which suggests that the nanowires were grown with a vapor-solid growth mechanism.
