First record of a marine microalgal species, Micractinium singularis (Trebouxiophyceae) isolated from Janghang Harbor, Korea

  • A eukaryotic microalga was isolated from seawater in Janghang Harbor, Korea and its morphological, molecular, and physiological characteristics were investigated. Due to its simple morphology, no distinctive characters were found by morphological observation, such as light microscope or scanning/transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM). However, molecular phylogenetic evidence inferred from the concatenated small subunit (SSU) 18S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence data indicated that the isolate belonged to the newly described Micractinium singularis. Furthermore, it was clustered with Antarctic Micractinium strains and it also showed a psychrotolerant property, surviving at temperatures as low as 5℃. However, its optimal growth temperatures range from 15℃ to 25℃, indicating that this microalga is a mesophile. Additionally, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis showed that the isolate was rich in nutritionally important omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, and high-performance liquid chromatography analysis (HPLC) revealed that the high-value antioxidant lutein was biosynthesized as an accessory pigment by this microalga, with glucose as the major monosaccharide. Therefore, in this study, a Korean marine M. singularis species was discovered, characterized, and described. It was subsequently added to the national culture collections.

Effect of Leaf and Pod Removal on Nodal Sink Characters in Soybean (잎과 꼬투리 제거가 콩의 절위별 Sink 형질 변이에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of leaf and pod removal on variation of nodal sink components in determinate soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivar 'Danyeobkong' were measured at the experiment field of Chonbuk Provincial Rural Development Administration in 1991. Contrary to the conventional numbering system, node order in this experiment was numbered from top to bottom node. The leaves and pods of main stem from terminal to 5th node, below 6th node, or branches were removed at the growth stage of beginning pod(R3). In the leaf removal treatment, number and weight of pod and seed were highly decreased in upper part leaf removal, especially in removed part. In the pod removal treatment, number and weight of pod and seed were slightly increased in the other part. Cracked seed coat ratios were also high in the leaf removal treatment compared with control but low in the pod removal treatment.

Effects of Planting Density and Fertilizer Level on Agronomic Characteristics and Yield of Solanum njgrum L. (재식밀도와 시비량이 야생약초 까마중(Solanum njgrum L.)의 주요 형질과 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was investigated to find out the optimum planting densities fo Solanum njrum L. about growth characters. yield components and yield at 6 planting densities by direct sowing culture. The results obtained are summarized as follows: Studying the correlationship. the highly negative significances were found between planting densities and fresh eights weights per plant, on the other hand, the highly positive significances were found between planting densities and plant height. Plant height was long in dense planting, and short in spacious planting by direct sowing culture. Stem diameter was thick in spacious planting. and was thin in dense planting. Fresh wt. per plant was decreased in dense planting and was increased in spacious planting by direct sowing culture. Yield was highest in dense planting densities (10 x 20cm : 50plants/$m^2$) by direct sowing culture. Fertilizing ((N: P$_2$O$_{5}$ $K_2$O=6 : 6 : 6Kg/10a) was increased than without fertilizing because plant height and number of branch was good.d.

Development of MDA-based Subsurface Spatial Ontology Model for Semantic Sharing (시멘틱 공유를 위한 MDA기반 지하공간정보 온톨로지 모델 개발)

  • Today, it is difficult to re-use and share spatial information, because of the explosive growth of heterogeneous information and specific characters of spatial information accumulated by diverse local agency. A spatial analysis of subsurface spatial informa-tion, one of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure, needs related spatial information such as, topographical map, geologic map, underground facility map, etc. However, current methods using standard format or spatial datawarehouse cannot consider a se-mantic hetergenity. In this paper, the layered ontology model which consists of generic concept, measuremnt scale, spatial model, and subsurface spatial information has developed. Also, the current ontology building method pertained to human experts is a expensive and time-consuming process. We have developed the MDA-based metamodel(UML Profile) of ontology that can be a easy under-standing and flexiblity of environment change. The semantic quality of devleoped ontology model has evaluated by reasoning engine, Pellet. We expect to improve a semantic sharing, and strengthen capacities for developing GIS experts system using knowledge representation ability of ontology.

Notes on the New Species of Genus Mycena in Korea (한국산 애주름버섯속의 신종 보고)

  • A re-study was conducted based on morphological characters of 39 specimens known as Mycena stylobates, collected from 33 areas, Mt. Chiack, Kangwon-do, etc. from 1988 to 2015 and deposited in the Herbarium Conservation Center of the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (HCCN). All specimens cited here were confirmed as a new to science, and designated as "Mycena yangsupensiae" which was described and illustrated in detail. Mycelial growth of four cultures from the fruiting bodies of Mycena sp. (KACC54181, KACC54182, KACC54183, and KACC54184) was high on the potato dextrose agar (PDA), at $25^{\circ}C$. These four taxa were confirmed as the same species, Mycena yangsupensiae, by the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing analysis. All collections cited here are deposited in HCCN, Suwon.

An Aspect of Occurrence and Chemical Properties of Grey Leaf Tobacco (Type III) (연초 III형 Grey엽의 발생양상과 화학성분 특성)

  • The occurrence and chemical properties of grey tobacco leaves (Type III) found in 1995 crop of flue-cured tobacco cultivated in paddy field were investigated to compare with those of normal leaves. Cured leaves of NC82 were separated by visual characters into 3 classes of slight, fair and severe symptoms of grey leaf by the percentage of grey parts to whole leaf area. Number of samples classified with discoloring portion was the order of greyish brown > reddish brown > greyish yellow, respectively. Grey leaves of this type were mostly found among the leaves harvested from upper stalk position, and it was estimated that growth rate of upper leaves also influenced on the occurrence of grey leaves. Grey leaves showed remarkably lower b* and L* values than those of normal leaves, while a* value was mostly higher in grey leaves. These tendencies in chromatic aberration showed more remarkable difference in the degree of grey symptoms. Chemical analyses of grey leaf samples indicated that they contained less total nitrogen and nicotine, and more total sugar and starch than those of normal leaves. In chemical traits, these tendencies were accordance with the degree of grey symptoms, and within the same leaf, grey parts were decreased in total nitrogen and ether extract content compared with those of normal parts, but there was no difference in nicotine and Cl contents.   • A study was conducted on the genetic correlations and simple correlations between some characters of the plus trees of Pinus densiflora. The results can be summarized as follows. 1. Simple correlations height growth by age was measured and high correlation(above r=0.9) were observed. Therefore, early selection seems to be possible in the light of the results made up to 8 years old. 2. Genetic correlation between height and root collar diameter was 0.266 and the correlation between height and branch diameter was 0.091 and 0.391 was between root collar diameter and branch diameter.

  • Liver tumors in children are rare, relatively complex, and encompass a broad spectrum of disease processes. This study reviews our experience of liver tumors during the last 10 years. Medical records of 36 cases of liver tumors in children, treated at Samsung Medical Centers, from October 1994 to December 2005, were reviewed in this study. We analyzed disease characters and survival rates as a whole and by specific disease. The median age was 3.6 years. Male and female ratio was 1:1. The most common symptom was the palpable mass in 15 cases. Others were abdominal distension in 9 cases, jaundice in 2, vomiting in 2, weight loss in 2, and pubic hair growth in 1. CT or US and liver biopsy were performed for diagnosis. There were 28 malignant tumors: malignant rhabdoid tumor (1 case), hepatocellular carcinoma (3 cases), hemangioendothelioma type II (3 cases), angiosarcoma (1 case), and hepatoblastoma (20 cases). Eight tumors were benign; hepatic adenoma (1 case), focal nodular hyperplasia (2 cases), hemangioendothelioma type I (2 cases), mesenchymal hamartoma (3 cases). In this study the clinical characteristics were not different from the other reports. Liver transplantation was performed in 3 cases-1 with hepatoblastoma and 2 with hepatocelleular carcinoma. Accurate and early diagnosis, and individualized multimodality therapeutic approaches might be important for better outcome.

The Cultural Identity Found in Contemporary T-Shirts and the Development of Design (현대 티셔츠에 나타난 문화정체성과 디자인 개발)

  • The study was focused on surveying the cultural identity and the origin of T-shirts, and examining their functions. Six cities were selected to categorize the design motifs of cultural identity appearing in the design of contemporary T-shirts. These cities include a city in France, United Kingdom, Italy, United States and Japan where collections are currently presented at, and also a city in China that has shown a high economic growth as one of the most popular sightseeing cities. Cultural identity was presented in the T-shirts that were examined in this study through diversified design motifs. Motifs used in T-shirt designs to reflect cultural identity included national flags, notable places, letters, names of geographic places, and individuals. A national flag is a motif that signifies national identity and it was used in the front of T-shirts as it is or was just partially used. Also, many world-renowned structures or architectural buildings were applied to T-shirt design. Noted places such as the White House, the Statue of Liberty in the U.S., Tienanmen Square in China and the Eiffel Tower in France were used. The unique characters of language, such as Hangeul in Korea were used as design elements to reflect the structural characteristics of letters. Names of geographic places were used as design elements through the disclosure of the name of a symbolic city or a tourist site in each country. In terms of figures, not only the historical figures or celebrities from each country were used, but the image of bodies and faces that represent each culture were used as well. In addition, this study was used to develop T-shirt designs that reveal the cultural identity of Korea.

Effects of Rhizome Size and Planting Space on the Growth and Yield or Ginger(Zingiber officinale Rosc.) in Greenhouse Cultivation (생강의 비닐하우스 재배가 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of rhizome size and planting space on some agronomic characters and rhizome yield of ginger in greenhouse cultivation. The average air temperature was 9$^{\circ}C$ higher in greenhouse cultivation than in field. The average soil temperature also was 2-4$^{\circ}C$ higher in greenhouse. Plant height, leaf area, stem number and rhizome yield were significantly increased when cultivated at greenhouse compared to field. Under greenhouse the yield of rhizome in 30$\times$30cm planting space were appeared to be increase 121-183% compared with field cultivation. At the planting space of 60$\times$30cm, harvests were increased 76-82% comparing field cultivation. The most suitable rhizome size for planting at 30$\times$30cm planting space found to be 40g in greenhouse cultivation.
