  • This study was divised to observe the inhibitory effect of growth rate of human colon cancer cells by Eucommial leaf extract, in vitro. Three species of human colon cancer cells, HRT-18, HCT-48 and HT-29, were used for the experiment. Each extract of Eucommial leaf was prepared by extraction with water, 95% alcohol, acetone, chloroform and petroleum ether, and then the inhibitory effect of each extract on the growth rate of cells was compared with control group and each other. The experimental results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Inhibitory effects on growth rate of human colon cancer fells were strongest in the petroleum ether extract and next in the chloroform extract. 2. Inhibitory effects on the growth rate of the cancer cells by extracts of water, 95% alcohol and acetone were weaker than that of petroleum ether and chloroform. 3. Inhibitory effect of each extract on the cancer cell growth was shown most strong activity in HT-29, and was in order of HRT 18 and HCT-48. In view of the results, it could be suggested that inhibitory effects of non-polar solvent's extracts against the cancer cell growth were more stronger than that of polar solvents and the effects were indicated difference according to the species of the cells.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine usability as potted flowers and garden plants by controlled plant height using growth retardants. There was no significant difference on the dwarfing effect according to the degree of exposure the sun, but growth was well under full exposure to the sun. The plant height was decreased by application of Cycocel (CCC), Bonzi (paclobutrzol), Ancymidol, and Uniconazole compared to the control group, and treatment of Bonzi $5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ was most dwarfing effect for both full sun exposure or 70% controlled shading condition. No consistent different was found in stem diameter, leaf color change, the content of chlorophyll and anthocyanin when the concentration of plant growth retardants was altered. These factors were affected only by light intensity. In comparison to the results of the control group, leaf length, leaf width, plant width and petiole length were all reduced by the application of growth retardants.

  • Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plants have been reported to contain water-soluble substances that are autotoxic as well as allelopathic. Laboratory experiment through a petri-dish assay with imbibed seeds was conducted to evaluate both autotoxic and allelopathic effects of alfalfa leaf extracts on the germination and early seedling growth of alfalfa, red clover, crested wheatgrass, and Russian wildrye. Alfalfa seed germination was delayed dependent on extract concentration, with no difference in final germination at 72 hours. Root growth of alfalfa was stimulated up to 14% above control at very low concentrations of both leaf and stem extracts of alfalfa and was significantly reduced at extract concentration of more than 0.5g dry tissue/L (${gL}_{-1}$). Leaf extracts were generally more autotoxic for root growth than were stem extracts. Hypocotyl growth was not affected by all the concentrations of both leaf and stem extracts. Root length of legumes was more sensitive to the autotoxic chemicals from leaf extracts than was germination or shoot length. Hypocotyl growth of two legume plants and plant height of two grasses were not influenced by extracts. Seed germination and root growth of legumes were more inhibited by aqueous extracts of alfalfa leaf than were those of grasses. This result indicates autotoxic effect of alfalfa leaf extracts seems to be greater than allelopathic effect.

  • The morphology, seed germination, and life history of Salix nipponica were investigated in the wetland of the Nam-River, Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea from 2000 to 2001 to provide the basic data necessary for riverine ecosystem restoration through understanding the growth characteristics of Salix nipponica. Salix nipponica had stomata on only lower side and stomata type was paracytic. Salix nipponica produced many small and light seeds. The seed number per mature ament was 1599.4, seed mass of 0.04 mg, and fertilization rate of 66.1%. Seed germination was little affected by light. Germination rate was high and mean germination time was short Under flooding condition, seeds were germinated normally and were viable after as much as 14 days of flooding. But there were no differences under various water depths on germination rates. Tree age was closely correlated with more stem diameter than tree height and there was no difference of growth rate between male and female tree. Growth rate was most rapid for 2 to 3 years after germination, and length growth was almost stopped for more than 11 years even though mass growth was done. Besides even a second-year indivisual was flowered.

  • Objective: The primary objective of this study was to quantitatively analyze the bone parameters (thickness and density) at four different interdental areas from the distal region of the canine to the mesial region of the second molar in the maxilla and the mandible. The secondary aim was to compare and contrast the bone parameters at these specific locations in terms of sex, growth status, and facial type. Methods: This retrospective cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) study reviewed 290 CBCT images of patients seeking orthodontic treatment. Cortical bone thickness in millimeters (mm) and density in pixel intensity value were measured for the regions (1) between the canine and first premolar, (2) between the first and second premolars, (3) between the second premolar and first molar, and (4) between the first and second molars. At each location, the bone thickness and density were measured at distances of 2, 6, and 10 mm from the alveolar crest. Results: The sex comparison (male vs. female) in cortical bone thickness showed no significant difference (p > 0.001). The bone density in growing subjects was significantly (p < 0.001) lower than that in non-growing subjects for most locations. There was no significant difference (p > 0.001) in bone parameters in relation to facial pattern in the maxilla and mandible for most sites. Conclusions: There was no significant sex-related difference in cortical bone thickness. The buccal cortical bone density was higher in females than in males. Bone parameters were similar for subjects with hyperdivergent, hypodivergent, and normodivergent facial patterns.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the maturity stages of venture firms through classification analysis, which is widely used as a big data technique. Venture companies should develop a competitive advantage in the market. And the maturity stage of a company can be classified into five stages. I will analyze a difference in the growth stage of venture firms between the survey response and the statistical classification methods. The firm growth level distinguished five stages and was divided into the period of start-up and declines. A classification method of big data uses popularly k-mean cluster analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, artificial neural network, and decision tree analysis. I used variables that asset increase, capital increase, sales increase, operating profit increase, R&D investment increase, operation period and retirement number. The research results, each big data analysis technique showed a large difference of samples sized in the group. In particular, the decision tree and neural networks' methods were classified as three groups rather than five groups. The groups size of all classification analysis was all different by the big data analysis methods. Furthermore, according to the variables' selection and the sample size may be dissimilar results. Also, each classed group showed a number of competitive differences. The research implication is that an analysts need to interpret statistics through management theory in order to interpret classification of big data results correctly. In addition, the choice of classification analysis should be determined by considering not only management theory but also practical experience. Finally, the growth of venture firms needs to be examined by time-series analysis and closely monitored by individual firms. And, future research will need to include significant variables of the company's maturity stages.

  • The effect of respiratory inhibition was investigated by treating conidia or mycelium of Cochliobolus miyabeanus with phenylmercuric 8-oxyquinolinate (PMQ) or. phenylmercuric acetate (PMA) in terms of $O_2$ up take ul/mg dry weight of cells. The results obtained are as follows: 1. In inhibition of mycelial growth, PMQ gave somewhat less effective than PMA, hut there was no remarkable difference between them, and the two indicated strong inhibitory effect on mycelial growth at the range from 0.01 to 1.0 ppm. 2. In inhibition of conidial respiration, PMA gave somewhat stronger than PMQ except at 0.1ppm, but there was no notable difference between them, and it seemed that there was no inhibitory effect at 0.01ppm. 3. PMQ was stronger than PMA in inhibition of mycelial respiration as compared with the cibudail respiration, ration, and the difference between them was about $10\%$. 4. According to the above results, the inhibitory effect of spore germimation by PMQ was the same as to PMA or somewhat lower than that of PMA. The inhibitiry effect of PMQ on mycelial growth was lower than that of PMA.
