  • A femoral bone tumor causing a valgus deformity by affecting the growth plate was found. Long intramedullary diaphyseal tumor was separated by septum at the metapysis. Low grade chondrosarcoma was confirmed diagnosed by pathologists. Progressive limb deformity can be a sign of bone tumor in growing period.

  • The goal of this project is to achieve an accurate segmentation of the pulmonary tumors besides shortening the time and increasing the accuracy. Here, improved region growing (IRG) algorithm is introduced in order to segment the lung tumor with a sufficient accuracy in a shorter time compared to the other basics methods. This comprehensive algorithm was applied on 4 patients CT images and the results of the various steps on segmentation improvement shown 98% accuracy as compared to the basic algorithm. The combination of "multipoint growth start" produced a desirable outcome in accurately bounding the tumor. The proposed algorithm improved tumor identification by less than 13% along with a sufficient percentage of compliance accuracy.

  • Primary anaplastic oligodendroglioma in brain stem is extremely rare. The authors present a case of a anaplastic oligodendroglioma arising from pons. A 29 year-old male patient was admitted because of cranial nerve palsy and visual disturbance. Neurological examination revealed bilateral sixth and left seventh cranial nerve plasies. Near-total resection of tumor mass was performed through midline suboccipital appraoch. Tumor was not related with choroid plexus and major vessels but it was firmly attached to the fourth ventricle floor. Tumor was considered to be arised from the tegmental portion of pons, growing dorsally into the 4th ventricle. Hitopathological exmination revealed primary anaplastic oligodendroglioma. Postoperative course was uneventful. The authors believe that this type of tumor with dorsally growing pattern can be successfully resected without major neurological deficit.

  • In order to make in vivo model of human oral squamous cell cancer, we brought up BALB/C nude mice in specially designed housystem, and maintained some kind of human oral squamous cancer cell lines ; KB, SCC-4, SCC-9, SCC-15, SCC-25. Various concentration of cancer cells were inoculated subcutaneouly into flank area of nude mice. We observed each nude mouse more than 5 weeks after tumor inoculation. We appraised the results, measured the tumor size, and calculated the growing tumor volumes after tumor inoculation according to cancer cell line and concentration of cancer cells in media. Some cancer cell lines were rapidly growing in nude mice, but some cancer cell line couldn't grow in nude mice and resorbed completely. And in some cancer cell line, some nude mice showed continuously growing tumor, but other didn't show any tumor growing. And as a new try, we implanted specially disigned caps on the back of nude mice, and cancer cell lines were brought into the caps with media. We removed the cap after 1 week, and observed over 4 weeks. The shape and size of growing tumor were observed.

  • Cancer angiogenesis is simulated using a two dimensional model. Governing equation of angiogenesis is a TAE (Tumor angiogenesis factor) conservation equation in time and space. A stochastic process model is utilized to simulate vessel formation, proliferation, and migration to a cancer pellet. Numerical results are presented especially in case of growing cancer.

  • This paper describes automatic methods for detection of kidney and kidney tumor on abdominal CT scans. The abdominal CT images were digitalized using a film digitizer and a gray-level threshold method was used to segment the kidney. Based on texture analysis results, which were perform on sample images of kidney tumors, SEED region of kidney tumor was selected as result of homogeneity test. The average and standard deviation, which are representative statistical moments, were used to as an acceptance criteria for homogeneous test. Region growing method was used to segment the kidney tumor from the center pixel of selected SEED region using a gray-level value as an acceptance criteria for homogeneity test. These method were applied to 113 images of 9 cases, which were scanned by GE Hispeed Advantage CT scanner and digitalized by Lumisvs LS-40 film digitizer. The sensitivity was 85% and there was no false-positive results.

  • Metastatic mature teratoma is a common radiologic and histopathologic finding after chemotherapy for metastatic non-seminomatous germ cell tumors. The leading theory for these residual tumors is the selective chemotherapy resistance of teratomas versus the high chemotherapy sensitivity of the embryonal components. Growing teratoma syndrome is a relatively rare phenomenon defined as an enlarging residual mass histologically proven to be a mature teratoma in the setting of normal serum tumor markers. Metastatic mature teratomas should be resected because of their malignant potential and occasional progression to growing teratoma syndrome with the invasion of the surrounding structures. CT is the preferred imaging modality for post-chemotherapy surveillance and should cover all sites of potential metastatic disease. This article reviews the clinical, pathologic, and multimodality imaging features of metastatic mature teratomas in patients with primary testicular non-seminomatous germ cell tumors.

  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the esophagus has been relatively an uncommon, slow growing tumor. A 51 year-old man patient had a tumor in the lower third of the esophagus which was incidentally found during an examination for UPPER C-I series, and resected successfully without Thoracotomy. The tumor exhibited a polypoid appearance covered by normal esophageal epithelium, localized entirely in the submucosal layer of the esophagus and morphologically identical to adenoid cystic carcinoma in the salivary glands.

  • We experienced a very rare case of pulmonary blastoma in a 29 year old female. She complained of left chest pain and dyspnea for 1 month. The characteristic feature of this tumor is it`s biphasic pattern consisting of a spindle cell stroma containing glandular structures. A serial check of simple chest X-ray and computed tomography revealed a growing huge lung mass occupying whole left thorax. We successfully removed the upper lobe of left lung with a huge tumor mass. Pathologic study revealed this tumor as pulmonary blastoma. We report a case with review of literature.

  • Purpose: Sebaceous carcinoma is a rare malignant tumor derived from the adnexal epithelium of sebaceous glands. This tumor usually occurs on the eyelids, but uncommonly it may occur on the extraocular sites. It is characterized by a tendency of local recurrence and occasional metastasis. Surgical excision is appropriate treatment for patients with sebaceous carcinoma. Because this kind of case is rare, we report two cases of sebaceous carcinoma developed on scalp. Methods: Case 1 was a 69 - year - old woman. She visited the hospital with a $1.5{\times}2.5cm$ sized reddish yellow - colored, slowly growing mass on left parietal scalp. The mass began at birth and started growing at 5 years ago. Case 2 was a 67 - year - old woman. She had $2.5{\times}3.0cm$ sized yellow - colored mass on right parietal scalp. It occured at birth and started growing at 3 years ago. And the masses had erythematous ulcer with sanguineous discharge. In the beginning, the masses were miliary nodule. Results: CT scan and fine needle biopsy were done. Case 1 and 2 were diagnosed as sebaceous carcinoma. Wide excision with safety margin of 10 mm and split thickness skin graft was done. Histological examination revealed well demarcated, irregular, variable sized tumor lobules. Each lobule was composed of sebaceous and undifferentiated cells. Postoperatively, the patients did well and the lesion had not recurred. Conclusion: Sebaceous carcinoma is an aggressive malignant tumor. It often can be mistaken for other skin tumors. Authors experienced two rare cases of sebaceous carcinoma developed on scalp. We recommend early wide excision with enough safety margin as treatment of sebaceous carcinoma.
