Kidney diseases rates in modern Korean society, which is entering an aging society, are growing. These diseases diagnosed at early stage can be cured with the drug or dietary treatment. If, however, at worsening stage, kidney dialysis or transplant is needed. In this context, we analyzed the relationship between kidney and voice by measuring and analyzing the changing rate of the vocal chord and intensity according to hemodialysis. For this, we collected voice samples before and after hemodialysis, and compared and analyzed them through application of vocal analytical element. Namely, based on oriental medical diagnosis theory that voice is quieted down when kidney is abnormal, we collected voice samples before and after hemodialysis, and applied trembling and intensity analysis of vocal chord.
The experiment was carried out to the find variation of the sugar contents in the tip and basal part of the cotyledon and remaining portion of embryos in Phaseolus vulgahs seeds during germination with HPLC analysis method. Water content in cotyledon of kidney bean seed was about 6.4~6.5 of fresh weight and incresed to 45.8~71.2% during germination showing that tip part of cotyledon has more water content by 1.1~3.8% compared to the lower part of it. Higher water onten was observed in the rest parts of the seed except cotyledon such as plumule, radicle and hypocotyl showing that it increased to 72.2~93.3% depending on the different tissue organs. Main important sugars in kidney seeds during germination stages are; raffinose, sucrose, glucose and fructose, and the amount are differed with the kinds of embryo in kidney bean seed organs and stages of germination. Raffinose amount in kidney bean is increasing repeatly when seeds become wet but disappear it soon after seed have germinated especially in growing embryo parts. Raffinose in basal parts of cotyledons were still presented some an amount after germination. Sucrose is synthesized highly in plumule embryo at the beginning stage of germination but disappeared it from 5 days after seeding stages. Amount of sucrose in cotyledon of kidney seeds and seedlings increased continuously after germination. The amount of glucose and fructose in the cotyledons of kidney seeds during germination varied 5~10% or 5~15% but in the germinating and growing organs, plumule, they increased continuously after germination.
A low level exposure experiment was conducted on growing rats to investigate the accumulation and organ distribution of protein bound cadmium compared with cadmium chloride. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed for 21days with one of the semisynthetic diets, which contains cadmium as either bovine liver- or kidney meal bound cadmium, cadmium chloride with uncontaminated liver meal or cadmium chloride without organ meal, in the levels of ca. 0.5, 1 and 1.5mg/kg diet, respectively. After 21days of exposure cadmium was accumulated in liver, kidney and gastrointestinal tracts depending upon cadmium levels in diet. Inspite of very low cadmium accumulation in whole blood, it tends also to increase with dietary cadmium levels. The blood cadmium concentration of animals fed organ meal containing diets was about 4-7 fold higher than that without organ meal, regardless of cadmium was intrinsically bound to protein or not. However, significant effects of organ protein on cadmium accumulation in liver, kidney and digestive tracts were not detectable, when cadmium was supplemented as cadmium chloride. On the other hands, animals fed diet containing ca. 1.5mg Cd/kg as organ bound cadmium retained more cadmium in liver, kidney and digestive tracts compared to cadmium chloride with organ meal, whereby the increase of cadmium concentration in kidney was greater then in liver. However, when the concentration of protein bound cadmium was<1mg/kg diet, organ bound cadmium was not significantly different from cadmium chloride in bioavailability and organ distribution. From this result it is suggested that the intestinal absorption of protein bound cadmium is influenced of the amount of cadmium bound in protein. When cadmium concentration in protein is relatively low, protein bound cadmium seems to be absorbed in the same way as cadmium ions are absorbed. However, when the concentration is high, at least a small amount of intact protein bound cadmium could be absorbed and accumulated selectively in kidney.
The aim of this study was to investigate if dietary Chlorella vulgaris(chlorella) intake would be effective on cadmium(Cd) detoxification in rats fed dietary Cd. Fourteen-week old male Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats weighing $415.0{\pm}1.6\;g$ were randomly divided into two groups and fed slightly modified American Institute of Nutrition-93 Growing(AIN-93G) diet without(n=10) or with(n=40) dietary Cd(200 ppm) for 8 weeks. To confirm alteration by dietary Cd intake, twenty rats fed AIN-93G diet without(n=10) and with(n=10) dietary Cd were sacrificed and compared. Other thirty rats were randomly blocked into three groups and fed slightly modified AIN-93G diets replacing 0 (n=10), 5 (n=10) or 10% (n=10) chlorella of total kg diet for 4 weeks. Daily food intake, body weight change, body weight gain/calorie intake, organ weight (liver, spleen, and kidney), perirenal fat pad and epididymal fat pad weights were measured. To examine Cd detoxification, urinary Cd excretion and metallothonein (MT) concentrations in kidney and intestine were measured. Food intake, calorie intake, body weight change, body weight gain/calorie intake, organ weight and fat pad weights were decreased by dietary Cd intake. Urinary Cd excretion and MT concentrations in kidney and small intestine were increased by dietary Cd. After given Cd containing diet, food intake, calorie intake, body weight change, body weight gain/calorie intake, organ weights and fat pad weights were not influenced by dietary chlorella intake. Renal MT synthesis tended to be higher in a dose-dependent manner, but not significantly. And chlorella intake did not significantly facilitate renal and intestinal MT synthesis and urinary Cd excretion. These findings suggest that, after stopping cadmium supply, chlorella supplementation, regardless of its percentage, might not improve cadmium detoxification from the body in growing rats.

Purpose: Somatic growth is an important indicator of health in children. Adequate organ growth is essential in growth and directly related to body growth. We consider renal length as a surrogate of organ growth in growing children. Measurement of weight, height, and many anthropometric indices, such as body surface area (BSA), body mass index (BMI), and Rohrer and Kaup indices, are used to evaluate growth status. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between renal length and somatic parameters and analyze the affecting factors for renal size during growth. Methods: The data for renal length in 66 children (age, $12.9{\pm}15.6$ months; male/female, 34/32) were obtained. Each kidney was measured with ultrasonography and dimercaptosuccinic acid scan. The data on age, sex, height, and weight were obtained from the medical records. BSA, BMI, and Rohrer and Kaup indices were calculated from measured height and weight. BSA was calculated by 2 methods, and is expressed as BSA I and BSA II. Results: There were significant correlations between renal size and age, weight, height, BSA I, BSA II, and Rohrer index. In the regression analysis, the most significant contributing factor to renal growth was height ($R^2$=0.636, $P$ <0.001). Conclusion: Height seems to be the most important factor associated with organ growth in growing children. Further studies to evaluate adequate organ growth should be carried out.

Ureteropelvic junction obstruction and duplicated collecting system are common urologic anomalies in upper urinary system, but they seldom occur in combination. These obstruction can occur in both partial or complete duplicated collecting system. Complete duplication of the ureter may be asymptomatic or recognized when complications develop as a result of reflux into the lower pole ureter or obstruction of the upper pole with an ectopic ureterocele. It is difficult to choose an optimal therapy due to the high variability in function, degree of obsturction, damage and potential fir regeneration in growing kidney. We report our experience of successful surgical interventions in the ureteropelvic junction obstruction of the lower pole with complete duplicated collecting system.
Effects of very low level of lead in diet and exposure time on the accumulation and distribution in organs and tissues was investigated with growing rats. 21 days old Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to lead for 7, 14 and 21 days by feeding of 0.03, 0.42, 0.92 and 1.46mg/kg Pb as Pb-acetate containing diet, respectively. Lead concentrations in blood, liver, kidney and bone exhibit a linear relationship with lead levels in diet. After 7 days of exposure, the greatest dose dependent accumulation of lead was found in kidney and followed in bone. However, after 14 and 21 days, the dose dependent accumlation of lead in bone was about two fold greater than that in kidney. The accumulation of lead in liver and blood was relatively low. As continuous exposure to lead, the concentrations of lead in liver, kidney, blood and intestinal tracts were rather not increased with exposure time. However, bone lead concentration was increased with exposure time by feeding of 0.92 and 1.46mg/kg Pb in diet, but not 0.42mg/kg. The lead concentration in gastrointestinal tracts tends also to increasing with lead levels in diet after 7 and 14 days of exposure. However, by 21 days of exposure the lead concentration revealed relatively constant value regardless of the dietary lead levels. It is concluded that the binding capacity of the lead in blood, liver, kidney and bone seems to be increased with increasing lead levels in diet. The lead concentration in these organs, with the exception of the lead in bone, seems, however, to be standing under steady state regulation by continued exposure with the same dietary lead level. Therefore, by chronic exposure condition with environmental relevant lead level bone might be a principle targe organ for lead and blood lead repesents better the current lead exposure than the lead body burden.

Objectives: Patients with dementia are increasing in Korea. So the importance of accurate diagnosis and treatment of dementia is growing. In this paper, we evaluated the result of employing the Korean medical diagnostic pattern as a tool in clinics. Methods: Patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease were evaluated using the Korean medical diagnostic pattern tool. Results: The number of patients with liver-kidney yin deficiency pattern/syndrome was 35. Analyzing the ratio difference between the 'liver-kidney yin deficiency' group and the 'not liver-kidney yin deficiency' group revealed that the ratio of the responses to the fourth question was less than zero. The ratio of the responses to the fifth, seventh, and eight questions were all less than 10%. The ratio of the responses to the first and second questions were greater than 30%. Conclusions: Of the six diagnostic patterns, liver-kidney yin deficiency was the greatest in the study subjects. The fourth question in the liver-kidney yin deficiency tool tests for the lack of appropriateness whereas the fifth, seventh, and eight questions test for lack of discrimination. Applying more weight to the first and second questions was an excellent choice to increase the discrimination.
Recently lots of books on the process of growing have been published on adolescence and their parents hope to grow tall but yet lacked the correct knowledge. Before helping the growth of body, the best way is to do away with the check factors of the human body. Therefore oriental and occidental medicine study on the inhibition of growth and the result of case study about life therapy, kinesiatrics, including medical therapy are as follows: The habits that help the process of growing are deep sleep, balanced diets, daily physical exercise, good posture. It is essential for people to relieve stress. The physical exercises that promote the process of growing are as follows: to stretch out, daily suitable exercise which stimulates the metabolism of human body to increase levels of growth hormone and excite growth plate, to hasten the process of growing, Oriental medicine causes on the inhibition of growth show many factors: kidney trouble is the inhibited cause, spleen ailment is the acquired ground. The lack of essence of the dual principal of the negative and the positive makes people the inhibition of growth. All these things including fire and dryness have close relations.
Vanadium has been known as environmental polluants resulted from the burning of fossil fuels in nature. It led to toxic responses by prooxidant activity, inducing free radicals and the accumulation in the tissues. Recently, there has been growing interest in an essential nutritional requirement of vandium and especially the treatment of diabetes. But because of its strong toxicity, thease chemicals have narrow safety margin. In order to reduce metal toxicity, and increase absorption and biological activities, metal ions such as selenium and chromium were uptaken in yeast cells. In this study, Vanadium yeast was prepared by uptaking vanadate in yeast cells. Vanadate induced hematological and biochemical changes in the experimental rat blood were inhibited by the treatments of vanadium yeast. Lipid peroxidation and catalase activity were significantly increased in kidney and liver after a single intraperitoneal injection of vanadate to rats. However, these observations were apparently reduced in the vanadium yeast treated group. Vanadium amount in blood, kidney and liver after a single intraperitoneal injection of vanadium yeast was significantly reduced than that of vanadate treated group. In conclusion, vanadium yeast uptaken vanadate in yeast cells could reduce toxic effects of vanadate.
