Groundwater and rainwater are the only sources of freshwater in small islands as many islands lack surface water sources. Groundwater occurring in the form of freshwater lens floating on denser seawater is highly dependent on natural recharge from rainfall. A sharp interface numerical model for regional and well scale modeling is selected to assess the sustainability of freshwater lens in the island of Tongatapu. In this study, 29 downscaled General Circulation Model(GCM) predictions are input to the recharge model based on water balance modelling. Three GCM predictions which represent wet, dry and medium conditions are selected for use in the groundwater flow model. Total freshwater volume and number of saltwater intruded wells are simulated under various climate scenarios with GCM predicted rainfall pattern, sea level rise and pumping. Simulations indicate that the sustainability of the freshwater lens is threatened by the frequent droughts which are predicted under all scenarios of recharge. The natural depletion of the lens during droughts and increase in water demands, leads to saltwater upconing under the pumping wells. Implementation of drought management measures is of utmost importance to ensure sustainability of freshwater lens in future.

To estimate the groundwater recharge, the fully distributed parameter based model, MIKE SHE was applied to the Gyeongan-cheon watershed which is one of the tributaries of Han River Basin, and covers approximately $260km^2$ with about 49 km main stream length. To set up the model, spatial data such as topography, land use, soil, and meteorological data were compiled, and grid size of 200m was applied considering computer ability and reliability of the results. The model was calibrated and validated using a split sample procedure against 4-year daily stream flows at the outlet of the watershed. Statistical criteria for the calibration and validation results indicated a good agreement between the simulated and observed stream flows. The annual recharges calculated from the model were compared with the values from the conventional groundwater recession curve method, and the simulated groundwater levels were compared with the observed values. As a result, it was concluded that the model could reasonably simulate the groundwater level and recharge, and could be a useful tool for estimating spatially/temporally the groundwater recharges, and enhancing the analysis of the watershed water cycle.
The groundwater level distribution and characteristics of responses to rainfall were examined in the Haean basin of Yangu that has a single stream exit to the east. The groundwater levels showed a circular or elliptical distribution converging the center of the basin with different hydraulic gradients in the north and south regions. The waterlevel elevations exhibited a perfect correlation with topographic elevation ($r^2=0.99$) while the depth to water showed a rather weak correlation ($r^2=0.49$). The water table fluctuation (WTF) method yielded recharge ratios of 6.1~12.65% ($S_y=0.02$) and 15.2~28.5% ($S_y=0.05$). The waterlevels of HG3 well, which is much proximal to a stream, were weakly auto-correlated but they were highly sensitive to direct infiltration from the rainfall event. The shorter regulation times of the HG3 represented a quicker dissipation of the input stress (rainfall).
The characteristics of groundwater movement under the heavy rainfall at Nan-ji waste landfill site are studied using HELP(Hydraulic Evaluation of Landfill Performance) program, which calculates the daily leachate in the Nan-ji waste landfill site. In this study, instead of the average recharge value, which is used in the past study, the real reacharge value is used to calculate the daily leachater. It is found about 70 times greater than thor average recharge value under the condition of heavy rainfall in the rainy season. The flow characteristics of groundwater for water level fluctuation is simulated using the ground water flow model MODFLOW(A Modular 3-D Finite Different Groundwater Flow Model) program, and the slurry layer is newly added. The result of the study is different from that of the ordinary simulation, which shows much higher ground water level than from the ordinary simulation.
Facilities for low impact development (LID) or groundwater recharge have the high potential spreading groundwater nitrate contamination because of the rapid infiltration. This study was initiated to remove nitrate from the waters using agricultural byproducts as organic sources for denitrification during infiltration. As the first step of this purpose, we experimentally tested the denitrifying efficiency of 4 organic materials (pine tree woodchips, cherry leaves, rice straws, and rice hulls) and tried to identify the key factors controlling the efficiency. For this study, we precisely investigated the change of chemical reactions during the experiment by analyzing various geochemical parameters. The result shows that the denitrification efficiency is not simply linked to the availability of the easily decomposable contents in the organic matter. It is found that avoiding the severe pH decrease due to the CO2 generation is the essence to derive the efficient denitrifying conditions when organic matters were used.
This study is to suggest a few efficient ways of rainwater utilization, through monitoring and analyzing 143 rainwater storage systems and 110 artificial recharge systems, which are installed in the recommended facilities by law, among the rainwater harvesting systems in Jeju Island. In the case that catchment facilities are damaged, rainwater could be contaminated by leaves and debris so that the rates of rainwater usages come to be lower. It is possible that contaminated rainwater could contaminate artificial recharge wells or rainwater discharging out of the rainwater harvesting system could result in flood and damage for the downgradient area. For maintaining high quality of rainwater and increasing rainwater utilization rate, it is necessary to install screening facilities and purification plant functioning precipitation and filtration. Also, in order to efficiently preclude the overflowing rainwater exceeding storage capacity, it is recommended to associate rainwater storage tanks with artificial recharge well or infiltration trench facilities.

It is important to consider the effects of land-use changes on surface runoff, stream flow, and groundwater recharge. Expansion of urban areas significantly impacts the environment in terms of ground water recharge, water pollution, and storm water drainage. Increase of impervious area due to urbanization leads to an increase in surface runoff volume, contributes to downstream flooding and a net loss in groundwater recharge. Assessment of the hydrologic impacts or urban land-use change traditionally includes models that evaluate how land use change alters peak runoff rates, and these results are then used in the design of drainage systems. Such methods however do not address the long-term hydrologic impacts of urban land use change and often do not consider how pollutants that wash off from different land uses affect water quality. L-THIA (Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment) is an analysis tool that provides site-specific estimates of changes in runoff, recharge and non point source pollution resulting from past or proposed land-use changes. It gives long-term average annual runoff for a land use configuration, based on climate data for that area. In this study, the environmental and hydrological impact from the urbanized basin had been examined with GIS L-THIA in Korea.
In Korea, groundwater management has been conducted based on the estimation of annual average of groundwater recharge. Since groundwater recharge and surface water-groundwater interactions show spatiotemporal variation, continuous monitoring and dynamic analysis must be carried out to evaluate the sustainability of groundwater resources. In this study, SWAT-MODFLOW, an integrated surface water-groundwater model was used to analyze surface-groundwater interactions for various groundwater pumping scenarios in Musimcheon watershed. When current usage is applied, the baseflow reduction is about 16%, and annual averaged storage reduction is about 27 mm for whole watershed. As a holistic approach to groundwater sustainability considers the hydrological, ecological, socioeconomic, technological aspects of groundwater utilization, the exploitable groundwater should be determined by physical analysis as well as social compromise in a community.
This paper outlines the methodology of grid-based water balance for estimating the spatial distribution of recharge, which is applied to Woedo catchment in the northern area of the Jeju Island. The catchment is divided into grids and a daily water balance in each grid is computed for the period of 5 years. Daily rainfall data in each grid is interpolated from the data of 10 rainfall gauging stations. The spatial distributions of parameters such as SCS curve number, soil water retention capacity and crop coefficients are derived from GIS analyses of soil and land use characteristics. The SCS curve number is obtained by calibrating simulated runoffs with respect to the observed runoffs. The results show that the average annual rainfall increases from 1,665 mm/year to 3,382 mm/year in accordance with the topographic elevation, and the average annual recharge varies from 372 mm/year to 2,576 mm/year according to the average annual rainfall increases. Spatial variability of recharge is the highest among the water balance components such as rainfall, direct runoff, evaprotranspiration and recharge because the rate of runoff and evapotranspiration in the area with relatively low rainfall is higher than the other area.
