This study presents a state of the art in evaluation on naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) areas and effective strategies for investigation and management of NOA areas in Korea. First of all, we defined and classified the NOA area as compiling various countries' regulations, then discussed the best methods for evaluation and management of NOA for reducing exposure of asbestos in the vicinity of NOA areas. According to the literature survey, a three-steps management strategy was suggested in this study. The first step is a confirmation stage of asbestos contamination possibility and the second step is an assessment stage of asbestos contamination using investigation, analysis, evaluation and reclamation. The final step is a following-up control stage. These three management steps for NOA area will give the maximum effectiveness of NOA control in Korea.
The Quaternary volcanic rocks, clastic sedimentary rocks of Kyongsang System, and carbonate rocks of Joseon and Pyongan System are known as good productive and potential aquifer systems in South Korea. National Groundwater Informaton Mangement and Service System (GIMS) indicates that the exploitable, sustainable, and current use of groundwater are about 18.8, 12.9, and $3.73billion\;m^3/a$, respectively. The rest amount ($9.1billion\;m^3/a$) can still be used for an additional water supply source. Therefore. comprehensive groundwater survey work comprising hydrogeological mapping, subsurface investigation and quantitative aquifer test etc. are highly required to establish rational groundwater management strategy.
Groundwater resources are becoming depleted due to climate change factors and non climate change factors. In order to effectively groundwater resources management, we developed a method for evaluating vulnerable periods of groundwater resource management in watershed areas. The watershed based vulnerability assessment was conducted independently of the evaluation of vulnerable areas and vulnerable periods for sub watersheds. The vulnerable area evaluation index was standardized and applied to the independent vulnerable period index each region. It was applied to Bonghwa-gun, Andong-si, Yecheon-gun, Mungyeong-si and Sangju-si in the upstream of the Nakdong river basin. As a result, the Sangju-si's August was the most vulnerable at 0.278, and Andong-si was assessed to be vulnerable to groundwater resource management during 8 months of the year in study area. Using the developed method, we can find efficient management method considering the time and regional of groundwater resources.
The Section 12 of Groundwater Law stipulates that groundwater conservation zone should be regulated by the designation of conservation area and development restricted area, The most important policy for groundwater conservation and protection is to estimate and designate groundwater conservation zone. The groundwater classification map is utilized to determine the prime groundwater conservation areas, which delineate the first and the second ranked conservation areas of the map. According to the classification method of the Ministry of Construction and Transportation in 2000, groundwater quality for groundwater classification is classified with 4 levels based on the following conditions : (1) the present groundwater quality; (2) the potential usage as drinking water at present and in the future; (3) hydrogeological characteristics, and (4) the existence of pollution sources and activities. Throughout the initial analysis, the groundwater conservation areas are represented about 57.1$\textrm{km}^2$ in the groundwater classification map, which is 9.4% of Seoul Metropolitan Area. The management guidelines for groundwater conservation area are also developed referring to Cheju Province Groundwater Conservation Management Project and the guidelines by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. But the specific administration and detailed technical survey should be prepared to efficiently manage the groundwater conservation area.
Groundwater management vulnerability was assessed using TOPSIS (Techniques for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution) for 21 administrative districts in Nakdong river basin. Ten indicators were selected for 21 administrative districts in the Nakdong river basin by collecting natural, human, and social data sets. The selected indicators were standardized using rescale method, and each indicator was weighted by considering the questionnaire of expert group. The results of the weights determination survey showed that the annual average groundwater level index was 0.157 and this is the highest value. The annual average precipitation index was 0.154 and the annual groundwater recharge index was 0.152. The lowest weighted index was 0.043 for population density. Finally, the result of assessment of groundwater management vulnerability showed that Sangju-si was the most vulnerable to groundwater management among 21 administrative districts in Nakdong river basin because the annual average precipitation, annual average groundwater recharge, and annual average groundwater use indicators were highly vulnerable. The second and the third vulnerable regions were Yecheon-gun and Haman-gun respectively. The assessment of groundwater management vulnerability for the five major river basins in Korea can be a essential basis for the establishment of groundwater management policy.
Object: The purpose of this study was to select priority points for soil management using the location of groundwater and to suggest this method for soil contamination surveys. Method: Groundwater impact range was set to an area of 100 to 500 meters from the center point of agricultural groundwater wells. Data on industrial complex and factory areas, areas of stored or used ores and scrap metals, areas associated with waste and recycling, and traffic-related facilities areas were collected and checked for whether they fall within the groundwater impact range. Longitude and latitude coordinates of these data were mapped on the groundwater impact range using QGIS (Quantum Geographic Information System). Results: Considering the groundwater impact range, the points were selected as follows: 589 points were selected from 6,811 factories and 259 points were selected from 1,511 recycling business points. Traffic-related facility areas were divided between gas stations, bus depots, and auto mechanics. Thirty-four points were selected from 149 bus depots and 573 points were selected from 6,013 auto mechanic points. From the 2,409 gas station points, 323 were selected. Conclusion: Contaminated soil influences groundwater and crops, which can harm human health. However, soil pollution is not easily identified, so it is difficult to determine what has occurred. Pollution must be prevented beforehand and contaminated soil found. By selecting and investigating soil contamination survey points in consideration of the location of groundwater wells, we can safely manage water resources by preventing groundwater contamination in advance.
Until now, research achievements of groundwater such as groundwater to depth distribution, usage, the available amount of development, water quality have been written in the watershed units($25{\sim}250km^2$). However, complex topography and geology, and the rivers of our country does not fit. And a clear management standards have not been able to present measures in groundwater quantity, water quality management such as rainfall, groundwater, utilization, water quality, pollution, etc. Therefore, in this study, the classification criterion of subwatershed unit($2.5{\sim}25km^2$), which is suitable for topography and geology of Korea, for rainfall-rating, groundwater level-rating, groundwater pollution-rating, groundwater quality-rating presented and proved its efficiency by applying in Hampyeong-Gun area.

To establish an aging management plan considering seawater influx and changes in groundwater within nuclear power plant sites, the characteristics of groundwater flow must be understood. This study investigated the characteristics of groundwater flow within the site and analyzed groundwater level recorded by monitoring wells to evaluate groundwater flow characteristics and elements that affected these characteristics for supplying the information to conduct the appropriate aging management for ensuring the safety of the safety-related structures in Shin Kori Unit 1 and 2. The increase in groundwater level during the wet season results from high sea-level conditions and the large amount of precipitation. As a result of the analysis of groundwater distribution and change characteristics, the site could be divided into a rainfall-affected area and a tide-affected area. First, the rainfall-affected area can further be divided into areas that are affected simultaneously by excavation, backfill, and a permanent dewatering system. Secondly, areas that are not affected by excavation, or the dewatering system, or by structure arrangement and excavation. Analysis of the spectrum for wells affected by tides resulted in confirmation of the M2 component (12.421 hr) and S2 component (12.000 hr) of the semidiurnal tides, and the O1 component (25.819 hr) of the diurnal tides. In the cross-correlation results regarding tides and groundwater levels, the lag time occurred diversely within 1-3 hours by the effect of the well location from sea, the distribution of the backfill material with depth, and the concrete structure.
Nitrate contamination problems from groundwater supplies have been documented throughout many countries in the world, including Korea. Nitrate salts can induce methemoglobinemia and possibly human gastric cancer. In farmed areas. intensive agricultural activities have caused a major increase in nitrate loading to groundwater. To determine whether decision makers must take farm-management actions to control the increase of groundwater nitrate concentration and to decide the timing of such actions, it is important to predict groundwater Nitrate levels that would result over time from various farm-management practices. However, the input values such as soil, fertilizer and crop data) used to examine the effects of various farm-management practices on groundwater nitrate level are usually uncertain due to a lack of available information. In this paper. the ease of a community with a nitrate water quality problem is illustrated to examine the effects of various farm-management practices and to show bow to perform, with uncertain information. a time-series analysis on groundwater nitrate levels that would result. from each farm-management practice.
