The water-table fluctuation (WTF) method has been often used for estimating groundwater recharge by analysis of waterlevel measurements in observation wells. An important assumption inherent in the method is that the water level rise is solely caused by precipitation recharge. For the observation wells located near a stream, however, the water-level can be highly affected by the stream level fluctuations as well as precipitation recharge. Therefore, in applying the WTF method, there should be consideration regarding the effect of stream-aquifer interactions. Analysis of water-level hydrographs from the National Groundwater Monitoring Wells of Korea showed that they could be classified into three different types depending on their responses to either precipitation recharge or stream level fluctuations. A simple groundwater flow model was used to analyze the errors of the WTF method, which were associated with stream-aquifer interactions. Not surprisingly, the model showed that the WTF method could greatly overestimate recharge, when it was used for the observation wells of which the water-level was affected by streams. Therefore, in Korea, where most groundwater hydrographs are acquired from wells nearby a stream, more caution is demanded in applying the WTF method.
Visual MODFLOW, a three dimensional groundwater flow model, was used to analyze effects of a weir construction in an alluvial stream on the nearby groundwater flow system. A hypothetical conceptual model was developed to investigate how the groundwater level and the water budget could change after a weir construction depending on the location of tributary streams. A site example, dealing with the Juksan weir installed in the Yeongsan River, was also demonstrated to predict the effects of the weir construction. Model results show that impacts of a weir construction on the groundwater flow system greatly vary depending on how far a tributary is located and whether it is located downstream or upstream from the weir. Therefore, consideration of the location of tributaries in planning the location of a weir could effectively minimize the impacts of a weir construction on the groundwater flow system. It is also demonstrated that model results are highly dependent upon how the model is dealing with small tributaries and agricultural drainage channels, which can be easily found nearby the main streams, acting as major water bodies for groundwater discharge. The model for the Juksan area shows that the weir construction will change the direction of groundwater flow in some areas, leading to changes of groundwater quality and interaction of the Yeongsan River to the aquifer from a gaining to a losing stream. The model also predicted the areas where rise of groundwater level caused by the Juksan weir could adversely affect plant growth, and thereby suggested installing new drainage channels as a countermeasure to drawdown the groundwater level.
As one of the hydrological factors closely related to landslides, precipitation indirectly affects slope stability by generating external forces. Groundwater level fluctuations have attracted more attention lately as factors that directly affect slope stability have become more prominent. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze the relationship between variables through changes in precipitation, groundwater levels, and land displacement. A time series-based analysis was conducted using satellite-based precipitation and point-based groundwater levels in conjunction with the PSInSAR technique to simulate land displacement in urban and mountainous areas. There was a sharp rise in groundwater levels in both urban and mountain areas during heavy rainfall, and a continuous decrease in urban areas when rainfall was low. 6 mm of displacements was observed in the mountainous area as a results of soil outflow from the topsoil layer, which was accompanied by an increased groundwater level. Meanwhile, different results were found in urban area. In response to the rise in groundwater level, the land displacement increases due to the expansion of soil skeletons, while the decrease seems to be attributed to anthropogenic influences. Overall, there was no consistent relationship between groundwater levels and land displacement, which appears to be caused by factors other than hydrological factors. Additional consideration of environmental factors could contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between the two factors.

The groundwater level (GWL) is an important subsoil condition for the design of foundation. GWL tends to fluctuate often with seasonal variation, which may cause unexpected, additional settlements with some reductions in the safety margin of foundation. In this study, the effects of fluctuating GWL on the load carrying and settlement behavior of footing were investigated and quantified. A series of model load tests were conducted for various GWL and soil conditions using a hydraulically-controlled chamber system. Changes in load level and rising and falling GWL fluctuation cycle were considered in the tests. Settlements during GWL rise were greater than those during GWL fall. The depth of the GWL influence zone ($\underline{d}_{w,inf}$) varied in the range of 0.3 to 1.5 times footing width and became shallower as GWL continued to fluctuate. Design equations for estimating GWL-induced settlements for footings were proposed. The GWL fluctuation cycle, load level and soil density were considered in the proposed method. Changes in settlement and factor of safety with GWL fluctuation were discussed.

The variation of groundwater level in Jeju Island is analyzed with the data of precipitation observed from 48 monitoring post and groundwater level observed from 84 monitoring wells during 2001 to 2009. The groundwater level rises in summer and falls in winter. The rise of groundwater level by precipitation is fast and small in the eastern region and slow and large in the western region. However, the speed of fall during the period of no rain is slower in the eastern region than in the western region. It tells that permeability is greater in the eastern region than in the western region. In this paper, we set up the base level of groundwater and calculate recharge volume between the base level and groundwater surface. During the period, the average recharge volume was $9.83{\times}10^9m^3$ and the maximum recharge volume was $2.667{\times}10^{10}m^3$ after the typhoon Nari. With these volume and the recharge masses obtained by applying the recharge ratio of 46.1%, estimated by Jeju Province (2003), the porous ratio over the whole Jeju Island is 16.8% in average and 4.6% in the case of maximum recharge volume just after typhoon Nari. A large difference in the two ratios is because that it takes time for groundwater permeated through the ground just after rain fall to fill up the empty porous part. Although the porous ratios over the whole Jeju Island obtained in this way has a large error, they give us the advantage to roughly estimate the amount of recharged groundwater mass directly from observing the groundwater level.
We performed numerical modeling to estimate the groundwater level around a riverside area following the construction of an artificial structure. The groundwater level of the alluvial deposit responded more rapidly to the river water level than to the rainfall event itself, indicating that the groundwater and river water are directly interrelated through the riverbed. Furthermore, transient modeling showed raised groundwater levels at the southern part of Mt. Dok and the eastern part of Mt. Dummit in an area of low plains. The artificial structure caused a rise in groundwater level of up to approximately 6 m.

Recent decades have seen all over the world increasing drought in some regions and increasing flood in others. Climate change has been alarming in many regions resulting in degradation and diminution of available freshwater. The effect of global warming and overpopulation associated with increasing irrigated farming and valuable agricultural lands could be particularly disastrous for coastal areas like the one of Benin. The coastal region of Benin is under a heavy demographic pressure and was in the last decades the object of important urban developments. The present study aims to roughly study the general effect of climate change (Sea Level Rise: SLR) and groundwater pumping on Seawater intrusion (SWI) in Benin's coastal region. To reach the main goal of our study, the region aquifer system was built in numerical model using SEAWAT engine from Visual MODFLOW. The model is built and calibrated from 2016 to 2020 in SEAWAT, and using WinPEST the model parameters were optimized for a better performance. The optimized parameters are used for seawater intrusion intensity evaluation in the coastal region of Benin The simulation of the hydraulic head in the calibration period, showed groundwater head drawdown across the area with an average of 1.92m which is observed on the field by groundwater level depletion in hand dug wells mainly in the south of the study area. SWI area increased with a difference of 2.59km2 between the start and end time of the modeling period. By considering SLR due to global warming, the model was stimulated to predict SWI area in 2050. IPCC scenario IS92a simulated SLR in the coastal region of Benin and the average rise is estimated at 20cm by 2050. Using the average rise, the model is run for SWI area estimation in 2050. SWI area in 2050 increased by an average of 10.34% (21.04 km2); this is expected to keep increasing as population grows and SLR.
Recently, land subsidence and sinkhole are generated due to a change in the groundwater level in the city. For this reason, the necessity for management of stable underground water level is on the rise. In this study, it was conducted for the underground structure that passes through the lower of bus transfer center construction site to examine the influence on the stability for underground structures to changes in the groundwater level and effective stress, the coupled finite element analysis and structural analyses were performed to evaluate stability for underground structure. It is to secure stability for underground structures according to underground water level declines. In this way, effective construction management will be made by previewing and forecasting the influence on the ground behavior and adjacent structures due to changes in the groundwater level.

Coastal waste dump in Pohang is composed of slags and sludge of POSCO. Hydraulic parameters in the coastal waste dump are very different from those in municipal landfills and general unconsolidated or fractured aquifers. In the waste dump pumping or slug tests are not adequate for the estimation of hydraulic parameters. Time-lag and amplitude of the tidal fluctuation of groundwater table are used to determine the hydraulic parameters. Groundwater table at the groundwater observation wells is about 40 cm higher than the sea level. The contributing factors of the groundwater-rise are estimated. Vertical profile of some chemical constituents in groundwater indicates the gradual transition of the fresh groundwater at the uppermost position to the sea water at the bottom.

Saltwater intrusion effects of coastal aquifers in Korea peninsula were analyzed through trend analysis with groundwater level, seawater level, seawater temperature, and electrical resistivity(EC) data sets. Groundwater level and EC data sets from 27 coastal regions were collected and analyzed. Groundwater level was stable for all the regions however EC data showed stable or changing trends (9 increasing, 10 stable, and 8 decreasing regions). Seawater temperature was collected and analyzed for 14 regions and they are increasing for most regions (12 increasing and 2 stable regions). Seawater level was also collected and analyzed for 24 regions and is rising for most regions (18 rising, 3 stable, and 3 falling regions). Especially, west cost regions have stronger increasing tendencies of seawater level, seawater temperature, and EC than eastern and southern coastal regions. Therefore the saltwater intrusion problem can be serious for west cost regions in Korea peninsula and it is necessary to establish a plan to minimize the damages from saltwater intrusion.
