  • This survey was carried out to take the status of seawater intrusion into groundwater wells located in the eastern area of Chejudo, to get the elementary data which may evaluate the level of would-be groundwater contamination, and to perform effective the effort that will supply the clear water for the residents. The sampling sites were northeastern districts of Haengwon, Handong, and Sangdo, southeastern districts of Susan, Nansan, and Samdal, and northwestern districts, as reference, of Aewol, Keumnung, Panpo, Kosan, Shindo, and Bosung. We collected the samples from the public tap water by month, and analysed electrical conductivity, sodium(Na), potassium(K), magnesium(Mg), calcium(Ca), bicarbonate($HC0_{3^-}$), and items of the criteria as drinking water. In the northeastern districts we also added the sampling sites to survey the fluctuations of dissolved solids according to distance from seashore, including two private boreholes and one public tap water of Dukchun. The result is as follows 1) In the northeastern district, the concentration of chloride ion showed large fluctations from 40mg/l to 100mg/l, but suitable for the criteria of drinking water. It was thought that the drought influenced. 2) In the Sangdo of the northeastern districts, similar tendancy to Hangwon and Handong was showed only in the concentration of chloride ion, but different tendancy was showed in chloride-bicarbonate ratio, calcium-magnesium ratio, and sodium adsorption ratio(SAR). Considering these facts, it was not thought that seawater intruded. 3) The components of Na and Cl showed rapid slope in the northeastern districts above 3km from seashore. 4) In the northwestern districts as reference, the concentration of chloride ion fluctuated slightly according to the sampling sites and dates, and the concentration of nitrate-nitrogen in some sites exceeded the criteria of drinking water. These were thought that the surface contaminants rather than the intrusion of seawater influenced mainly the groundwater, considering the correlation(r=0.732) of chloride ion and nitrate-nitrogen. 5) Then we must consider the regional characteristies of soil profile in order to prevent the contamination of groundwater, and moniter also the movement of main components within the sol1 profile, not only the research of the intrusion of seawater.

  • Visual MODFLOW was used for quantifying stream-aquifer interactions caused by seasonal groundwater pumping. A hypothetical conceptual model was assumed to represent a stream-aquifer system commonly found in Korea. The model considered a two-layered aquifer with the upper alluvium and the lower bedrock and a stream showing seasonal water level fluctuations. Our results show that seasonal variation of the stream depletion rate (SDR) as well as the groundwater depletion depends on the stream depletion factor (SDF), which is determined by aquifer parameters and the distance from the pumping well to the stream. For pumping wells with large SDF, groundwater was considerably depleted for a long time of years and the streamflow decreased throughout the whole year. The impacts of return flow were also examined by recalculating SDR with an assumed ratio of immediate irrigation return flow to the stream. Return flow over 50% of pumping rate could increase the streamflow during the period of seasonal pumping. The model also showed that SDR was affected by both the conductance between the aquifer and the stream bed and screen depths of the pumping well. Our results can be used for preliminary assessment of water budget analysis aimed to plan an integrated management of water resources in riparian areas threatened by heavy pumping.

  • Data analysis of groundwater monitoring wells and geostatistical methods are used to identify the local characteristics of sea water intrusion and the range of sea water intrusion at the southeastern coastal area of Busan, Korea. Rainfall and groundwater level of two monitoring wells show a linear correlation because of the direct groundwater recharge by the precipitation. However, rainfall and electric conductivity have the inverse relationship because of the increase of groundwater. Electric conductivity rapidly increased at 24m depth and exceeded 20,000$\mu\textrm{s}$/cm near 26m depth in the monitoring wells. The variations of groundwater level and electric conductivity show that the interface between sea water and fresh water tends to move upward when groundwater level goes down. In the cross correlation analysis, groundwater level versus rainfall represents the largest cross correlation coefficient in 0 time lag but the cross correlation coefficient of electric conductivity versus rainfall is the largest when the time lag is 9 days. This suggests that the fluctuations of groundwater level respond to rainfall in a short time, but the interface between sea water and fresh water respond very slow to rainfall. Horizontal extents of sea water intrusion are estimated to 14 m from the east of Line 1, and 25 m from the southeast end of Line 2 in the inversion of dipole-dipole profiling data of two survey lines. The data of VES by the Schulumberger array in May and July show lognormal distributions. In the kriged apparent resistivity and earth resistivity distributions, the resistivities of July are increased comparing to those of May. This reflects that the concentration of sea water in aquifer is reduced due to the increased groundwater recharge from the rainfall in June and July. In analyzing the vertical and horizontal apparent resistivities and earth resistivity distributions, the geostatistical methods are very useful to identify the variations of earth resistivity distributions at the coastal area.

  • The aim of this study is the safety and an accident prevention in limestone terrain by the underground tunneling. The geology of the study area consists of a Paleozoic sedimentary sequence dominated by limestone, sandstone, shale, and carbonaceous shale. The sequence gently dips to the northeast but the joint contains steep with variable trend. A significant fracture zone is developed in the limestone and shale beds, sub-parallel to bedding, and follows in part the limestone-sandstone contact. Monitoring of groundwater levels in the area shows marked fluctuations in the water table, which repeatedly rose to a level of -4 m before sinking to -15 m. These cycles occurred in mid-May, 2007 and in early and middle June. The data indicate that these fluctuations were unrelated to rainfall that occurred during the study period. We infer that the fluctuations were associated with the development of underground karstic networks along the deep fracture zone, and overlying ground subsidence is likely related to the rapid sinking of groundwater and the associated strong downward suction force.

  • Groundwater, one of the resources for supplying water, fluctuates in water level due to various natural factors. Recently, research has been conducted to predict fluctuations in groundwater levels using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Previously, among operators in ANN, Gradient Descent (GD)-based Optimizers were used as Optimizer that affect learning. GD-based Optimizers have disadvantages of initial correlation dependence and absence of solution comparison and storage structure. This study developed Gradient Descent combined with Harmony Search (GDHS), a new Optimizer that combined GD and Harmony Search (HS) to improve the shortcomings of GD-based Optimizers. To evaluate the performance of GDHS, groundwater level at Icheon Yullhyeon observation station were learned and predicted using Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP). Mean Squared Error (MSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) were used to compare the performance of MLP using GD and GDHS. Comparing the learning results, GDHS had lower maximum, minimum, average and Standard Deviation (SD) of MSE than GD. Comparing the prediction results, GDHS was evaluated to have a lower error in all of the evaluation index than GD.

  • A time series dataset was conducted to ascertain the effect of water table on the variability in and emission of CH4 and CO2 concentrations at a closed landfill site. An in-situ data of methane/carbon dioxide concentrations and environmental parameters were collected by means of an in-borehole gas monitor, the Gasclam (Ion Science, UK). Linear regression analysis was used to determine the strength of the correlation between ground-gas concentration and water table. The result shows CH4 and CO2 concentrations to be variable with strong negative correlations of approximately 0.5 each with water table over the entire monitoring period. The R2 was slightly improved by considering their concentration over single periods of increasing and decreasing water table, single periods of increasing water table, and single periods of decreasing water table; their correlations increased significantly at 95% confidence level. The result revealed that fluctuations in groundwater level is the key driving force on the emission of and variability in groundgas concentration and neither barometric pressure nor temperature. This finding further validates the earlier finding that atmospheric pressure - the acclaimed major control on the variability/migration of CH4 and CO2 concentrations on contaminated sites, is not always so.

  • Hwajinpo Lagoon, located on the eastern coast of Korea, is a unique environment where freshwater and saltwater are mixed. Systematic management of the lagoon is required because it is a biodiversity-rich and area of high conservation value. The existing environment of the lagoon was evaluated by identifying the distribution of the groundwater level and groundwater flow characteristics. In addition, hydrogeochemical fluctuations were analyzed to determine the effect of seawater intrusion into the aquifer. The results demonstrate that the freshwater-saltwater interface is distributed throughout the aquifer and rises when water of the lagoon evaporates due to prolonged periods of low rainfall and high temperature, thereby increasing the possibility of seawater inflow through groundwater. As for the ionic delta properties (difference between the measured and theoretical concentration of mixed waters), it was estimated that the cation-exchange and precipitation reactions occurred in the aquifer due to seawater intrusion. The ratio of seawater mixed at each point was calculated, using oxygen isotopes and chloride as tracers, resulting in an average of 0.3 and a maximum of 0.87. The overall seawater mixing ratio appears to be distributed according to the distance from the coast. However, some of the results were deviated from the theoretical expectations and reflected the characteristics of the nearby aquifers. Further research on seasonal changes and simulation of seawater intrusion mechanisms is required for specific analysis.
