This study was objected to show the complexity of groundwater flow system in a site-scale area as a design parameter of the groundwater monitoring network for early detection of pollutant leakage from a potential source of groundwater contamination (e.g., storage tank). Around the tanks, three monitoring wells were installed at about 22~25 m deep and groundwater level and temperature had been monitored for 22 months by 2-minute interval, and then compared with precipitation and temperature data from nearby weather station. Annual variation of groundwater level and its response to precipitation event, variation of groundwater temperature and delayed response to that of atmospheric temperature indicate the complexity of groundwater flow and flow paths even in the relatively small area. Thus, groundwater monitoring network for early detection of contaminant leakage should be designed with full consideration of the complexity of groundwater flow system, identified from the detailed hydrogeological investigation of the site.

It is recently reported that the importance of environmental impact assessment(EIA) about groundwater outflow problems is beingy raised in the case of tunnel excavation during railroad construction. The EIA about groundwater outflow into railroad tunnel is generally performed using the results of numerical analysis embodied through groundwater flow modeling program like MODFLOW. The basic data for this modeling include (1) the geological and hydrogeological investigation data along the planned block of tunnel excavation, (2) total amount of outflowed groundwater during tunnel excavation, and (3) the status of groundwater level fluctuation in the water-supply wells distributed in the planned block of tunnel excavation. In this study, the authors analyzed the cases of the computational modeling about groundwater outflow in three planned blocks of railroad tunnel, and suggest the environmental impact factors and mitigation plan during EIA of tunnel excavation in railroad construction.
This study is to quantitatively evaluate the impact on surrounding groundwater of waterway tunnel excavation and cofferdam construction in which A-dam and B-dam, so prediction of groundwater fluctuation and tunnel lining installation was studied. As a result, drawdown of groundwater level during tunnel excavation and cofferdam construction occurred about 3.58 m in the tunnel shaft. The initial condition of groundwater level recovered by up to 90 % was simulated after the completed the construction of the tunnel and lining installation. Groundwater inflow in the tunnel evaluated was analyzed to have exceeding water design criteria of the tunnel. The groundwater inflow is reduced to maximum $0.006m^3/min/km$ after lining installation done in the tunnel, so effect of lining installation was evaluated as 93 % or more. Drawdown of about 0.04~0.31 m occurs in the houses and temples analysis of groundwater system of the surrounding area from construction. Drawdown has occurred nearly by considering annual groundwater level fluctuation of National Groundwater Observation Network.
The relationship between precipitation and groundwater level and the correlation between the moving average of precipitation and goundwater level were analyzed for the Han river watershed in Korean peninsular. Fourteen regions in the watershed were selected and there were somewhat different patterns of seasonal fluctuation of groundwater level data. The groundwater level data tends to decrease in dry spell and increase in wet spell however the range between maximum and minimum values is quite different for each gauging point. We could have stronger correlation between groundwater level for fractured rock aquifer and the moving average of precipitation than the groundwater level for alluvial aquifer. The critical infiltration, which is the maximum daily infiltration averaged throughout watershed, value is turned out to have the range of 10 to 90 mm. We could have stronger correlation when we consider critical infiltration and modify the original precipitation data than we use original precipitation data. We also could have higher correlation coefficient when we consider snowmelt effect for the watershed that has considerable snow event.
Groundwater is an important water resource that can be used along with surface water. In particular, in the case of island regions, research on groundwater level variability is essential for stable groundwater use because the ratio of groundwater use is relatively high. Researches using artificial intelligence models (AIs) for the prediction and analysis of groundwater level variability are continuously increasing. However, there are insufficient studies presenting evaluation criteria to judge the appropriateness of groundwater level prediction. This study comprehensively analyzed the research results that predicted the groundwater level using AIs for various regions around the world over the past 20 years to present the range of allowable groundwater level prediction errors. As a result, the groundwater level prediction error increased as the observed groundwater level variability increased. Therefore, the criteria for evaluating the adequacy of the groundwater level prediction by an AI is presented as follows: less than or equal to the root mean square error or maximum error calculated using the linear regression equations presented in this study, or NSE ≥ 0.849 or R2 ≥ 0.880. This allowable prediction error range can be used as a reference for determining the appropriateness of the groundwater level prediction using an AI.

The study aims to develop scenarios for efficient groundwater use using existing wells in order to prepare for an eventual drought. In the recent decades, droughts are not only intensifying, but they are also spreading into territories where droughts used to be less intense and relatively infrequent. With the increasing disaster, efficient groundwater use is urgently needed not only to prevent the problem of groundwater depletion but also drought risk reduction. Thus, the research addressed the problem of efficient aquifer use as source of water during drought and emergencies. The research focused on well network system applied to Yanggok-ri in Korea using simulation models in visual MODFLOW. The approach consists to variate groundwater pumping rate in the most important wells used for irrigation across the study area and evaluate the pumping effect on water level fluctuation. From the evaluation, the pumping period, appropriate pumping rate of each well and the most vulnerable wells are determined for a better groundwater management. The project results divide the study area into two different regions (A and B), where the wells in the region A (western part of the region) show a crucial drop in water level from May to early July and in august as consequence of water pumping. While wells in region B are also showing a drawdown in groundwater level but relatively less compare to region A. The project suggests a scenarios of wells which should operate considering water demand, groundwater level depletion and daily pumping rate. Well Network System in relevant project, by pumping in another well where water is more abundant and keep the fixed storage in region A, is a measure to improve preparedness to reduce eventual disaster. The improving preparedness measure from the project, indicates its implication to better groundwater management.
The groundwater level distribution and characteristics of responses to rainfall were examined in the Haean basin of Yangu that has a single stream exit to the east. The groundwater levels showed a circular or elliptical distribution converging the center of the basin with different hydraulic gradients in the north and south regions. The waterlevel elevations exhibited a perfect correlation with topographic elevation ($r^2=0.99$) while the depth to water showed a rather weak correlation ($r^2=0.49$). The water table fluctuation (WTF) method yielded recharge ratios of 6.1~12.65% ($S_y=0.02$) and 15.2~28.5% ($S_y=0.05$). The waterlevels of HG3 well, which is much proximal to a stream, were weakly auto-correlated but they were highly sensitive to direct infiltration from the rainfall event. The shorter regulation times of the HG3 represented a quicker dissipation of the input stress (rainfall).
The characteristics of groundwater movement under the heavy rainfall at Nan-ji waste landfill site are studied using HELP(Hydraulic Evaluation of Landfill Performance) program, which calculates the daily leachate in the Nan-ji waste landfill site. In this study, instead of the average recharge value, which is used in the past study, the real reacharge value is used to calculate the daily leachater. It is found about 70 times greater than thor average recharge value under the condition of heavy rainfall in the rainy season. The flow characteristics of groundwater for water level fluctuation is simulated using the ground water flow model MODFLOW(A Modular 3-D Finite Different Groundwater Flow Model) program, and the slurry layer is newly added. The result of the study is different from that of the ordinary simulation, which shows much higher ground water level than from the ordinary simulation.
The National Groundwater Monitoring Network (NGMN) in South Korea has been implemented in alluvial/ bedrock aquifers for efficient management of groundwater resources. In this study, aquifer types were reclassified with unconfined and confined aquifers based on water-level fluctuation and water quality characteristics. Principal component analysis (PCA) of water-level data from paired monitoring wells of alluvial/bedrock aquifers results in the principal components of both aquifers showing similar water-level fluctuation pattern. There was no significant difference in the rate of water-level rises responding to precipitations and in the NO3-N concentrations between the alluvial and bedrock aquifers. In contrast, in the results classified with the hydrogeological type, the principal components of water level were different between unconfined and confined conditions. The water-level rises to precipitation events were estimated to be 4.6 (R2=0.8) in the unconfined and 2.1 (R2=0.4) in the confined aquifers, respectively, indicating less impact of precipitation recharge to the confined aquifer. The confined aquifers have the average NO3-N concentration below 3 mg/L, implying the natural background level protected from the sources at surface. In summary, reclassification of aquifers into hydrogeological types clearly shows the differences between unconfined and confined aquifers in the water-level fluctuation pattern and NO3-N concentrations. The hydrogeologic condition of aquifer could improve groundwater resource management by providing critical information on groundwater quantity through recharge estimation and quality for protection from potential contamination sources.

Several attempts to construct multi-purpose tunnel for both road and waterway have been made. The multi-purpose tunnel is mainly used as a road tunnel, however it is transferred to waterway to control flood during rainy season. The planning of the multi-purpose tunnel is recognized as cost-effective way of infrastructure construction. In case of the multi-purpose tunnel constructed beneath groundwater table, seasonal fluctuation of groundwater table and repeated flow in the tunnel may cause long-term deterioration of the tunnel system. In this study, the behavior of multi-purpose tunnel in view of groundwater table or flow in the tunnel is investigated using model test and numerical modeling method. The results have shown that rising of groundwater table caused buoyant force to the tunnel and the fluctuation of rainwater in the tunnel generated loosening of surrounding ground. It is recommended to evaluate the effect of the long-term water pressure variation in the design of a multi-purpose tunnel.
