  • Groundwater level hydrographs from observation wells in Jeju island clearly illustrate distinctive features of recharge showing the time-delaying and dispersive process, mainly affected by the thickness and hydrogeologic properties of the unsaturated zone. Most groundwater flow models have limitations on delineating temporal variation of recharge, although it is a major component of the groundwater flow system. Recently, a convolution model was suggested as a mathematical technique to generate time series of recharge that incorporated the time-delaying and dispersive process. A groundwater flow model was developed to simulate transient groundwater level fluctuations in Pyoseon area of Jeju island. The model used the convolution technique to simulate temporal variations of groundwater levels. By making a series of trial-and-error adjustments, transient model calibration was conducted for various input parameters of both the groundwater flow model and the convolution model. The calibrated model could simulate water level fluctuations closely coinciding with measurements from 8 observation wells in the model area. Consequently, it is expected that, in transient groundwater flow models, the convolution technique can be effectively used to generate a time series of recharge.

  • Visual MODFLOW, a three dimensional groundwater flow model, was used to analyze effects of a weir construction in an alluvial stream on the nearby groundwater flow system. A hypothetical conceptual model was developed to investigate how the groundwater level and the water budget could change after a weir construction depending on the location of tributary streams. A site example, dealing with the Juksan weir installed in the Yeongsan River, was also demonstrated to predict the effects of the weir construction. Model results show that impacts of a weir construction on the groundwater flow system greatly vary depending on how far a tributary is located and whether it is located downstream or upstream from the weir. Therefore, consideration of the location of tributaries in planning the location of a weir could effectively minimize the impacts of a weir construction on the groundwater flow system. It is also demonstrated that model results are highly dependent upon how the model is dealing with small tributaries and agricultural drainage channels, which can be easily found nearby the main streams, acting as major water bodies for groundwater discharge. The model for the Juksan area shows that the weir construction will change the direction of groundwater flow in some areas, leading to changes of groundwater quality and interaction of the Yeongsan River to the aquifer from a gaining to a losing stream. The model also predicted the areas where rise of groundwater level caused by the Juksan weir could adversely affect plant growth, and thereby suggested installing new drainage channels as a countermeasure to drawdown the groundwater level.

  • We used numerical models to reliably analyze the groundwater flow and hydraulic conductivity on Jeju Island. To increase reliability, improvements were made to model application factors such as hydraulic watershed classification, groundwater recharge calculation by precipitation, hydraulic conduction calculation using the pilot point method, and expansion of the observed groundwater level. Analysis of groundwater flow showed that the model-calculated water level was similar to the observed value. However, the Seogwi and West Jeju watersheds showed large differences in groundwater level. These areas need to be analyzed by segmenting the distribution of the hydraulic conductivity. Analyzing the groundwater flow in a sub watershed showed that groundwater flow was similar to values from equipotential lines; therefore, the reliability of the analysis results could be improved. Estimation of hydraulic conductivity distribution according to the results of the groundwater flow simulation for all areas of Jeju Island showed hydraulic conductivity > 100 m/d in the coastal area and 1 - 45 m/d in the upstream area. Notably, hydraulic conductivity was 500 m/d or above in the lowlands of the eastern area, and it was relatively high in some northern and southern areas. Such characteristics were found to be related to distribution of the equipotential lines and type of groundwater occurrence.

  • Contaminant transport in groundwater induces major threat and harmful effect on the environment; hence, the fate of the contaminant migration in groundwater is seeking a lot of attention. In this paper a two dimensional numerical flow and transport model through saturated layered soil is developed. Groundwater flow and solute transport has been simulated numerically using proposed model. The model implements the finite volume time splitting method to discretize the main equations. The performance, accuracy and efficiency of the out coming numerical models have been successfully examined by two test cases. The verification test cases consist of two-dimensional, groundwater flow and solute transport. The final purpose of this paper is to discuss and compare the shape of contaminant plume in homogeneous and heterogeneous media with different soil properties and control of solute transport using a zone for minimizing the potential of groundwater contamination; furthermore, this model leads to select the effective and optimum remedial strategies for cleaning the contaminated aquifers.

  • This research aims to demonstrate the regional and site scale groundwater flow simulation for the high level radioactive disposal research site in Yu-seong. We used the Modflow by a finite difference method for groundwater flow simulation, and Modpath module in Modflow package for particle tracking simulation. The range of numerical domain for regional groundwater flow model is $16.32km{\times}20.16km$. And, the depth of numerical domain was expanded to 6,000m. The area of numerical domain for the site scale groundwater flow simulation is $1.6km{\times}1.6km$. Since 2005, the underground research tunnel(URT) is being constructed at KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) site. In the site scale groundwater flow model, the groundwater flow around the KAERI site is simulated. And the change of groundwater level with tunnel excavation is also predicted.

  • In recent decades, the dry stream phenomena of small and medium sized rivers have been attracting much attention as an important social problem. To prevent dry stream phenomena, it is necessary to build an infrastructure that manages rivers. To accurately determine the progress of dry stream phenomena, it is necessary to continuously measure the discharge and other hydrological factors for small and medium sized rivers. However, until now, the flow data for small and medium rivers in Korea has been insufficient. To overcome the lack of supporting data for supporting rational decision-making in policy and project implementation, a short- and long-term hydrological model was developed that takes into consideration hydrological changes such as the increase of the impervious area due to urban development and groundwater pumping, the construction of a large-scale sewage treatment plant, the maintenance of stream-oriented rivers, etc. In the developed model, the distributed grid is represented by three layers: Surface flow, interflow, and groundwater flow. The surface flow and intermediate flow flowed along the flow direction, and the groundwater flow was calculated by a two-dimensional groundwater analysis model such that the outflow occurred in all directions without a specific flow direction. The effects of land use and cover on evapotranspiration and infiltration and the effects of multiple landscapes can be simulated in the developed model.

  • In this paper, a reliability-groundwater flow program is developed by coupling the 3-D finite element numerical groundwater flow program with first and second order reliability program. The numerical groundwater program developed called DGU-FLOW is verified by solving the examples of groundwater flow through the underground excavation and comparing the results with those of commercial MODFLOW 3D programs. Reliability routine of the program is also verified by comparing the probability of failure of the flow model from FORM/SORM with that of Monte-Carlo Simulation. The difference of out-flux and total head calculated near the bottom of the excavation using the deterministic 3D groundwater flow and the commercial programs was negligible. The reliability analysis of the groundwater flow showed that the probability of failure from the first and second order reliability method are quite close that of Monte-Carlo Simulation. Therefore, the developed program is considered effective for analyzing the groundwater flow with uncertainty in hydraulic conductivity of the soils.

  • A numerical simulation technique of three-dimensional finite difference model is developed to study the groundwater flow system in Dcjima, an upland area which faces Kasumigaura Lake. For general perspectives of the groundwater flow system, a steady state three-dimentional model is simulated. For the sedimentary mud formations which are found in the representative formation, three situations of hydraulic conductivity are considered, representing an isotropic condition and situations where the horizontal permeability is equal to 10 times and 100times of the vertical one. The finite difference grid used in the simulation has 60x50x30=90,000 nodes. A converged solution with a tolerance of 0.001 meter of hydraulic head is set. Having determined the flow net by using a steady state three-dimensional model. the results for the three cases of hydraulic conductivity are compared with the results of tracer methods (Bae and Kayane 1987) With the aid of four representative vertical cross-sections, groundwater flow systems in the study area are assumed. Water balances for the three cases indicate very good agreement between total recharge and discharge in each case Analyses of groundwater flow system based on the tritium concentrations and water quality measurements (Bae and Kayane 1987) are confirmed by the numerical simulation and the results obtained by these two methods appeared to be in close agreement.

  • To estimate water balance of Pyosun watershed in Jeju Island, a three-dimensional finite difference model MODFLOW was applied. Moreover, the accuracy of groundwater flow modeling was evaluated through the comparison of the recharge rate by flow modeling and the existing one from water balance model. The modeling result under the steady-state condition indicates that groundwater flow direction was from Mt. Halla to the South Sea and groundwater gradient was gradually lowered depending on the elevation. Annual recharge rate by the groundwater flow modeling in Pyosun watershed was calculated to 236 million $m^3/year$ and it was found to be very low as compared to the recharge rate 238 million $m^3/year$ by the existing water balance model. Therefore, groundwater flow modeling turned out to be useful to estimate the recharge rate in Pyosun watershed and it would be available to make groundwater management policy for watershed in the future.

  • We consider influences of the aperture variation and the ambient groundwater flow on the migration of DNAPL within a fracture network. In context of a modified invasion percolation (MIP) growth algorithm, we formulate a mechanistic model that includes capillary and gravity forces as well as viscous forces within the DNAPL and the ambient groundwater. The MIP model is verified against laboratory experiments, which is conducted using a two-dimensional random fracture network model. The results show that the aperture variation and ambient groundwater flow can be significant factors controlling DNAPL migration path within fracture networks.
