PURPOSES: This study is to evaluate a ground water level effect on frost heaving in road pavements. METHODS: The effects of water table on frost heaving in pavement systems were evaluated from the mechanical analysis using FROST program. The input parameters and boundary conditions were determined by considering climates, pavement sections, and material properties specially subgrade soil types in Korea. RESULTS: When the water table located above the freezing depth, amount of frost heaving caused by freezing the water in pavement itself was big enough to damage in pavement system, although pavement system consists of fully non-frost-susceptible materials with sufficient thickness of anti-freezing layer. The amount of frost heaving was decreased rapidly with increasing the distance between the water table and freezing depth. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that there is no engineering problems related with frost heaving in practical sense when the distance between freezing depth and water table is over 1.5m for having subgrade soils less than 50% of #200 sieve passing to meet specification on quality control in Korea.

This study presents a numerical simulation model of vertical ground heat exchangers, considering unsaturated hydro static ground conditions induced by the ground water table fluctuation. Heat transfer in ground and grout is modeled by a 3-D FEM transient conductive heat transfer model, where heat transfer between circulating fluid and heat exchanging pipe is treated as 1-D quasi steady state forced convective elements. To take into account the unsaturated ground condition, soil thermal conductivity and heat capacity which are dependent on the matric suction are applied to ground elements. Parametric studies considering various ground water table conditions are conducted to investigate the influence of unsaturated hydro static ground condition on the mean heat exchange rate of ground heat exchanger. Simulation results considering water table fluctuation show 60~100% of mean heat exchange rate for a saturated soil condition and 125~208% of that for a dry soil condition. Thus consideration of unsaturated soil condition is substantially recommended for more accurate design and performance evaluation for ground heat exchangers.

Shaking table tests were peformed to evaluate the subgrade reaction of ground according to the build-up of pore water pressure. Model pile was installed in the sand ground. The acceleration of the model ground, the pore water pressure build-up and displacement of pile were recorded by measuring devices. Subgrade reaction approach based on Winker soil model was applied to obtain the modulus of the horizontal subgrade reaction. The results of analysis show that the reduction factor of the subgrade reaction due to pore pressure increase is about 1 and the horizontal subgrade reaction of liquefied ground is not influenced by the stiffness of pile, a ground acceleration and the intial ground density.

Stability of embankment is influenced on landfill condition, permeability, shear strength and soil engineering propensity and so on, and need examination in reply because is different according to change of soil property of foundation ground and permeability condition. Analyzed seepage behaviour by finite element method for embankment, and change permeability of base to analyze effect that permeability of ground water table formation before embankment and analyze seepage behaviour to typical embankment in this research. In the case of permeability of foundation ground is 10 more than landfill permeability, rise of groundwater table was changed slightly. Pore water pressure was decreased slowly in landfill after rainfall. The effect of permeability of foundation ground was effected in change of pore water pressure. For permeability of foundation ground is 10 more than landfill, stability of road landfill was small changed during rainfall. But in the case of permeability of base soil similar to landfill permeability, road landfill stability was large decreased during rainfall.
Focusing on the effect of excess pore pressure dissipation on liquefaction-induced ground deformation, a series of 1-g shaking table tests were conducted in a rigid soil container by use of saturated Toyoura sand, the relative density of which was 20-60%. These tests were subjected to the sinusoidal base shaking with step increased accelerations: 100, 200, 300 and 400 Gals for 2-4 seconds. Shaking table tests were done using either water or polymer fluid with more viscous than water, thus varying the sand permeability of model tests. Excess pore pressures, accelerations, settlements and lateral deformations were measured in each test. Test results are presented in this paper and the effect of sand permeability on liquefaction and liquefaction-induced ground deformation was discussed in detail.
A time series dataset was conducted to ascertain the effect of water table on the variability in and emission of CH4 and CO2 concentrations at a closed landfill site. An in-situ data of methane/carbon dioxide concentrations and environmental parameters were collected by means of an in-borehole gas monitor, the Gasclam (Ion Science, UK). Linear regression analysis was used to determine the strength of the correlation between ground-gas concentration and water table. The result shows CH4 and CO2 concentrations to be variable with strong negative correlations of approximately 0.5 each with water table over the entire monitoring period. The R2 was slightly improved by considering their concentration over single periods of increasing and decreasing water table, single periods of increasing water table, and single periods of decreasing water table; their correlations increased significantly at 95% confidence level. The result revealed that fluctuations in groundwater level is the key driving force on the emission of and variability in groundgas concentration and neither barometric pressure nor temperature. This finding further validates the earlier finding that atmospheric pressure - the acclaimed major control on the variability/migration of CH4 and CO2 concentrations on contaminated sites, is not always so.

Recently the truction of coastal reclaimation work has been extensively implemented in Korea. The Sondo New City is being established on the reclaimed land from the sea, construction companies of metro construction are planing to pull-out the sheet pile for saving the construction cost. In the case of soft marine clay, it is very difficult to pull-out the sheet pile by using the hydraulic hammer difficult. Therefore, the man of the field must be aware of vibration effect to the ground and the structure. For understanding the vibration effect to the ground during subway construction, the model was formulated with 1/25 braced-cut for subway construction. Scott and Iai(1989) proposed the law of the similarity for other experimental conditions. The laboratory model test was conducted under the vibration condition of sheet pile pulling out. The settlement on the ground surface was measured during the shaking table test. The pore water pressure was also monitored in the upper, middle, and lower layers of soil. The field settlement level and the pore water pressure can be predicted by using the results of the laboratory shaking table test.

Shaking table tests were performed to reproduce the dynamic behavior of estuary barrage and its subbase soil which can be potentially damaged during earthquake loading. For understanding the vibration effect to the ground during earthquake, the model was formulated with 1/300 scale of prototype estuary barrage and subbase soil. Scott and Iai(1989) proposed the law of the similarity for similar experimental conditions. The laboratory model shaking table test was conducted under the vibration condition of simulated earthquake of 0.154g. The horizontal displacement on the structure was measured during the shaking table test. The pore water pressure was also monitored for the underground layers of soil. The field horizontal displacement and the pore water pressure can be predicted by using the results of the laboratory shaking table test.
This study presents the experimental results on the performance of deep excavation by using image processing technique particle image velocimetry (PIV). The purpose of present study is to be checked the application of PIV for the successive ground deformation during deep excavation. To meet the objectives of concern study, a series of reduce scale model test box experiments were performed by considering the wall stiffness, ground water table effect and ground relative density. The results were presented in form of contours and vector plot and further based on PIV analysis wall and ground displacement profile were drawn. The results of present study, indicate that, the PIV technique is useful to demonstrate the ground deformation zone during the successive ground excavation.
