  • In this study, various sizes of waste ground rubber tire (WGRT) were devulcanized by a single screw extruder equipped with a sonicator in front of the die, and waste PP and devulcanized waste ground rubber tire (DWGRT) composites were prepared by an intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder. The crosslink density and percent devulcanization of WGRT and DWGRT for 40, 80 and 140 meshes were calculated. The mechanical properties of the composites were compared with each other. The effect of SEBS-g-MA as a compatibilizer was investigated on mechanical properties of both waste PP/WGRT and waste PP/DWGRT composites. The crosslink density was decreased with decreasing the WGRT size. On the other hand, the percent devulcanization was increased by adding the smaller size of WGRT. Also, tensile strength, impact strength and elongation at break of the composite with DWGRT were higher than those with WGRT. Especially, mechanical properties of the composites were significantly increased by adding the smaller size of WGRT and DWGRT. Addition of SEBS-g-MA into both waste PP/(D)WGRT composites exhibited better impact strength and elongation at break than the composites themselves.

  • The Unmanned Ground Vehicle is comprised of four systems of obstacle detection: The navigation system, vehicle controlling system, obstacle detecting and an integration system that use the various sensors. The research introduced utilizes 6 lasers to recognize obstacles. The system operates an avoidance system within the unmanned ground vehicle, using six lasers. The Unmanned Ground Vehicle's parallel parking and right angle parking is in development using algorithms. This algorithms' certification is intended to be installed in the encoder, in the GPS. By using the Laser Scannerfor the position's calculation, errors are both reduced and minimized, so the tire's slip minimized to the point where the vehicle had a limit of about 5Km/h.

  • Structural integrity of either a passenger car or a light truck is one of the basic requirements for a full vehicle engineering and development program. The results of the vehicle product performance are measured in terms of ride and handling, durability, noise/vibration/harshness (NVH), crashworthiness and occupant safety. The level of performance of a vehicle directly affects the marketability, profitability and, most importantly, the future of the automobile manufacturer In this study, we used the virtual proving ground (VPG) approach for obtaining the dynamic characteristics. The VPG approach uses a nonlinear dynamic finite element code (LS-DYNA3D) which expands the application boundary outside the classic linear static assumptions. The VPG approach also uses realistic boundary conditions of tire/road surface interactions. To verify the predicted dynamic results, a single lane change test has been performed. The prediction results were compared with the experimental results, and the feasibility of the integrated CAE analysis methodology was verified.

  • The flame retardancy and foaming properties of NBR foams containing waste ground tire rubber (GTR) were studied. When the composition ratios of NBR/GTR were ranged in $100/0{\sim}80/20$ (w/w) and rubbers/flame retardants were in the range of $1/1.95{\sim}3.70 wt%$, the considerably optimized foam for flame retardancy was obtained with high limiting oxygen indices (LOI, $29.4{\sim}40.0$), low heat release rate(HRR), closed/semi-closed cell of uniformity, and reasonable expandability ($215{\sim}300 %$). The LOI was increased and the heat release rate was decreased with increasing the amount of GTR content.

  • The tire delivering power generated from engine to the ground pulls a vehicle to move. Radius of tires is changeable due to elasticity that depends on the speed of vehicle and traction force. The main objectives on this study are real time measurement of dynamic radius and slip ratio according to the speed and traction force. The dynamic radius is proportional to speed and traction force. According to measurement, the dynamic radius is increased about 3mm under 100km/h compared to stop. It is also increased about 1.5mm when a traction force is supplied as much as 4kN compared to no load state at low speed. There is no strong relationship between slip ratio and vehicle speed. The slip ratio is measured up to 4% under WOT at first stage gear. Through this research, the method of measuring dynamic radius and slip ratio is set up and is expected to be applied to the measurement of traction force in chassis dynamometer or accelerating and climbing ability.

  • The spin-up and the spring-back are most severe load cases in the aircraft landing gear design. These load cases are caused by reciprocal action of complex physical phenomenon such as the friction between a tire and ground, inertia of the rotation of a tire and the flexibility of a landing gear structure. Generally, the empirical formula or the theoretical formula is used to calculate the spin-up and spring-back load in the early stage of the development program of the aircraft landing gear. After the materialization of the design of a landing gear, spin-up and spring-back load are acquired by the free drop test. In this study, the spin-up and the spring-back load of the rubber shock absorber type KC-100 nose landing gear are calculated by the explicit finite element analysis. Through this analysis, more accurate and realistic spin-up and spring back loads could be applied to the early phase of the development of the aircraft landing gear.

  • Nowadays, modifying asphalt to improve the resistancy of plastic deformation or rutting on roads has been drawing attention. In this study, asphalts were modified with modifying agents and ground rubber from waste tire (GRT), and the effects of modifier and GRT on the properties of asphalt were analyzed. The Marshall stability of modified asphalt was increased by 98% and the tensile strength increased by 43% compared to straight asphalt. GRT played an important role in enhancing these properties. Viscosity tests, penetration tests and TMA analysis showed the deformation resistancy of modified asphalt. IR and GPC tests indicated that asphalt and modifier have similar chemical structures to each other, and chemical bonding between asphalt and modifier have occurred so that the molecular size lengthened.

  • In this study, we constructed the test embankment with four kinds of sections(2 kinds of bottom ash; tire shred-bottom ash mixture, weathered soil) in field and had been monitoring the behaviour of the test embankment and change of ground water quality for 1 year. In the geotechnical aspects, there was no relative difference of deformation in 4 test materials section and we could not see the possibility of the strength-reduction of coal ash materials by freezing inside of the embankment. In addition, no settlement was observed in the test sections because the base soil of the test sections was rigid enough that no consolidation was occurred. In the examination of water quality, all of the heavy metals and negative ions were detected below the drinking water standards except for sulfate($SO_4^{2-}$). In the beginning of measurement, higher concentrations of sulfate from 4 test sections were detected than drinking water standard for 20 days after beginning of the test but the concentrations decreased below the drinking water standard after 50 days after the tests.

  • This paper investigates engineering characteristics of lightweight soils mixed with air foam and tire powder. Lightweight soils could be used as foundation materials, back-fills of reducing vibrating or abutment, and so on. Unconfined and triaxial compression tests were carried out to analyze strength and deformation characteristics of lightweight soils by changing target moist unit weight and cement contents. In comparison with strength characteristics of two different kinds of lightweight soils with same most unit weights ($13kN/m^3$), unconfined compression tests showed similar compressive strength, however, triaxial compression tests showed that compressive strength of lightweight soils mixed with waste tire powder was relatively larger strength than that of lightweight soils mixed with air foam because of elasticity of waste tire powder. Also, unconfined and triaxial compressive strengths of most of lightweight soils increase with increases of moist unit weight and cement contents. However, the strength of lightweight soils mixed with air foam under $11kN/m^3$, when moist unit weight exceeds a certain cement contents, decreases even though cement contents increase because of the effect in a void gap of air foam.

  • This paper describes modeling process to obtain precise landing gear model which is necessary to design a control law for ground auto-taxi, auto take-off/landing of UAV. In this paper, landing gear side force modeling is studied to complete a landing gear model of UAV. Side force modeling is performed by calculating cornering angle including steering angle. And ground directional controller is designed by using nose wheel steering and rudder steering at the same time to control course angle error. Accuracy of landing gear side force modeling and ground directional controller is proved by comparing of auto-taxi test results with simulation results.
