Satellite orbit determination using angles only data from single ground station is carried out. The KOMPSAT-1 satellite mono-pulse angle tracking data from 9-meter S-band antenna at KARI site in Daejeon are used for the orbit determination. Various angle tracking arcs from one-day to five-day are processed and the orbit determination results are analyzed. Antenna pointing data are predicted based on the orbit determination results to check the possibility of re-acquisition and tracking of the satellite signal. Normal satellite mission operations including orbit determination, antenna prediction, satellite re-acquisition and automatic tracking from predicted antenna angle pointing data are concluded to be possible when three-day angle tracking data from single tracking station are used for the orbit determination.
A LEO satellite transmits recorded images to a ground station using an X-band antenna during contact. The X-band antenna points to the ground station according to a TPF (tracking parameter file) during communication time. A TPF generation software generates azimuth and elevation profile which make the antenna point to the ground station using satellite orbit and attitude information and mission information including recording and downlink operation. When the satellite passes above the ground station, azimuth velocity increases rapidly so that jitter may occur if the azimuth velocity is in specific range. In case of realtime mission in which the satellite perform recording and downlink simultaneously, azimuth velocity must be lower than specific value to prevent image blur due to jitter effect. The method to point one virtual ground station has limitation of azimuth velocity reduction. In this paper, we propose the azimuth fixing method to reduce azimuth velocity of X-band antenna. The experimental results show that azimuth velocity of the X-band antenna is remarkably reduced using proposed method.

This study proposes the development of an antenna tracker system using a satellite system to stabilize the communication status of drones and extend the communication distance. The location information of the drone and the ground station was used to maximize communication gain in the general fixed antenna method between the ground station and the drone. We developed a tracker system that can automatically and continuously aim the ground station's antenna at the drone. It is expected that the use of antenna trackers will improve the stabilization of communication conditions and expand the communication distance, thereby leading to the advancement of the drone industry.

Ground station in lunar mission is responsible to receive telemetry signal including sensor data from lunar orbiter and/or lander. At preliminary stage of developing this ground station, receiving performance such as antenna size and noise temperature should be designed on the basis of link budget analysis. When the antenna of ground station is pointing to the moon to communicate with lunar orbiter and/or lander, noise level is supposed to be increasing due to the lunar flux density. It means that the moon is working as a noise source to degrade receiving performance when antenna is pointing to the moon. Antenna noise temperature contributed by the moon was firstly calculated and secondary validated by using test configuration in this paper. Consequently, it was shown that antenna noise temperature caused by the moon was quietly matched with measured one and G/T degradation of receiving system in lunar mission can be calculated depending on antenna size and frequency.

As more satellites are designed to downlink their observed image data through the X-band frequency band, it is inevitable that the occupied bandwidth of a target satellite will overlap with that of other X-band downlink satellites. For sun-synchronized low earth orbit satellites, in particular, it can be expected that two or more satellites be placed within the looking angle of a ground station antenna at the same time. Due to the overlapping in the frequency band, signals transmitted from the adjacent satellites act as interferers, leading to degraded link performance between target satellite and ground station. In this paper, link analysis was initiated by modeling the radiation pattern of ground station antenna through a validated Jet Propulsion Laboratory peak envelope model. From the relative antenna gain depending on the offset angle from center axis of maximum antenna directivity, the ratio of received interference signal level to the target signal level was calculated. As a result, it was found that the degradation increased when the offset angle was within the first point of radiation pattern. For a 7.3 m antenna, serious link degradation began at an offset angle of 0.4 degrees. From this analysis, the link performance of the coming satellite passes can be recognized, which is helpful to establish an operating procedure that will prevent the ground station from receiving corrupted image data in the event of a degraded link.

In satellite operations, stable maneuvering of a satellite's onboard antenna to prevent undesirable vibrations to the satellite body is required for high-quality high-resolution images. For this reason, the onboard antenna's angular rate is typically minimized while still satisfying the system requirement that limits the speed of the onboard antenna. In this study, a simple yet effective method, called the ground station searching method, is proposed to reduce the angular rate of a satellite's onboard antenna. The performance of the proposed method is tested using real flight data from the KOMPSAT-3 satellite. Approximately 83% of arbitrarily selected real flight scenarios from 66 test cases show reductions in the onboard antenna's azimuth angular rates. Additionally, reliable solutions were consistently obtained within a reasonably acceptable computation time while generating an onboard antenna tracking profile. The obtained results indicate that the proposed method can be used in real satellite operations and can reduce the operational loads on a ground operator. Although the current work only considers the KOMPSAT-3 satellite as a test case, the proposed method can be easily modified and applied to other satellites that have similar operational characteristics.
Dual-polarized transmission is one of the effective methods to transmit such a high speed data thanks to two independent channel leads to the orthogonal feature between RHCP (Right-Hand Circular Polarization) and LHCP (Left-Hand Circular Polarization). However, in practical case, the transmitted signal by RHCP polarized antenna in satellite can be occurred at the output port of LHCP polarized antenna in ground station, vice versa. XPD (Cross-Polarization Discrimination) is the ratio of the signal level at the output of a receiving antenna that is nominally co-polarized to the transmitting antenna to the output of a receiving antenna of the same gain but nominally orthogonally polarized to the transmitting antenna. In this paper, the detailed estimation of XPD within the interface between satellite and ground station is written and the influence of XPD to link performance is also described.

This paper describes the design of the Ka-band Antenna/RF system, which was developed for the experiment of the high-speed satellite communications with geostationary satellite. The design issues described here are the ka-band characteristics for having an optimum performance. and the system characteristic for having a reliable and an extensional operation.

In this paper, we carried out performance analysis of mobile station with built-in antenna for PCS(Personal Communication System) band. The radiation patterns for antenna and mobile phone were simulated by using 3D simulation program, HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator) and SEMCAD(Simulation Platform for Electromagnetic Compatibility Antenna Design Dosimetry). We observed radiation pattern variation according to installation of LED(Light Emitting Diode) circuit and ground pattern. The radiation pattern of prototype mobile phone was measured, and the radio sensitivity was measured by using Agilent E5515C and chamber. The measured maximum antenna gain at 1.87GHz was 0.21dBi. The measured radio sensitivity of prototype mobile phone shows proper performances comparable to other models with external antennas.
During developing cubesat flight software, Communication test between cubesat and ground station is needed. For this, we have constructed indoor ground station without outdoor antenna for decreasing total cost and time. In this time, if output power of ground station is high, it will affect for cubesat transceiver to be fail. For solving this problem, ground station must be designed for output power of it to be lower than input power of cubesat satellite, and it must be verified. In this paper, first, we describe cubesat indoor ground station using UHF and VHF. Second, we describe output power decreasing test for indoor operation of ground station by attaching attenuators in the end of the output connector.
