In this paper, it is shown that Carson's equation can still be applied for the calculation of the series reactance of transmission lines with no ground return current as well as the one with ground return. It is proved in the following method. First two voltage drop equations for three-phase three wire transmission line are derived, one without considering ground return and the other using Carson's equation. The impedance matrix of the two equations are different from each other. But if we put the condition of zero ground current, $I_a+I_b+I_c=0$, those two equations becomes the identical equations. Therefore even a transmission line is not grounded, its line parameters can still be obtained using the Carson's equation. It has been confused whether or not Carson's equation can be used for an ungrounded system. It is because where ever Carson's equation is shown in the book, it also says that the system has ground return current paths as a premise. It is also verified with EMTP studies on the test circuit.
This paper presents an analysis method of transient ground impedance using the lightning impulse and variable frequency currents. The transient ground impedance strongly depends on the configuration and size of grounding electrodes and the shapes of impulse currents, and the inductance of grounding electrodes has a significant affect on the transient impedance of the grounding system. There are some differences between the effective impulse ground impedance which was introduced some papers and the transient ground impedance. The transient ground impedance measured from the peak value of impulse voltage and the peak value of impulse current is more reliable than the effective impulse ground impedance.
Although DC ground resistance is a good index of grounding performance for grounding electrodes, it does not reflect the grounding performance during transient state. Besides, impulse ground impedance, which is defined by a ratio of the peak value of transient ground potential rise to the peak value of impulse current, cannot be an absolute index due to its dependence on impulse current shape. In this paper, ground impedance characteristics of ground electrodes has been measured in frequency domain ranging from 1 Hz to hundreds of kHz. Equivalent circuit models and transfer function models of the ground rod have been identified from the measured values of ground impedance in frequency domain.
In order to analyze the dynamic characteristics of ground impedance in large grounding system for lightning and surge protections, a novel method for measuring the ground impedance as a function of frequency was proposed. The experiments were carried out in the grounding system composed of ground rods and mesh grids. The test current was injected by the variable frequency inverter whose frequency is linearly controlled in the range of $5{\sim}500$kHz. The ground impedance and frequency response of the grounding system were mainly caused by the inductive current flowing through grounding conductors over the frequency of 2002. In the combined grounding system of rods and mesh grids, inductive component of ground impedance was significantly decreased. It was fumed out that the grounding system is effective for the surge protection.
Approximately 20% of the total fire is electrical fire, and electrical energy is a potential source of heat. Large-scale fault currents that occur during a line ground fault flow into electric utility poles, electric power equipment, or electric appliances of the customer, and cause simultaneous electrical fire. In this paper, we investigated the possibility of fire through the change of fault current flowing in faulty and sound feeder in case of 1 line ground fault in 22.9 kV distribution line. We propose a fire investigation analysis method for simultaneous multiple electrical fire such as evidence analysis method, and fault current occurrence confirmation method in case of fire accident by analyzing the fault current occurring in the ground fault in the distribution line using EMTP, electric power system analysis program.

We analysed the operating properties of resistive type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) based on YBCO thin films with a single line-to-ground fault. When a single line-to-ground fault occurred, the short circuit current of a fault phase increased up to about 6 times of transport currents immediately after the fault instant and was effectively limited to the designed current level within 2 ms by the resistance development of the SFCL. The fault currents of the sound phases almost did not change because of their direct grounding system. The unsymmetrical rates of a fault phase were distributed from 6.4 to 1.4. It was found that the unsymmetrical rates of currents were noticeably improved within one cycle after the fault instant. We calculated the zero phase currents for a single line-to-ground fault using the symmetrical component analysis. The positive sequence resistance was reduced remarkably right after the fault but eventually approached the balanced positive resistance component prior to the system fault. This means that the system reaches almost the three-phase symmetrical state in about 60 ㎳ after the fault. The ground currents were almost 3 times of the zero phase mts since most of the fault currents flowed through the grounding line.
The analysis of fault current limiting characteristics according to variation of fault current level in the integrated three-phase flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), which consisted of three-phase flux-lock reactor wound on an iron core with the same turn's ratio between coil 1 and coil 2 for each single phase, was performed. To analyze the current limiting characteristics of this integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL, the short circuit experiments was carried out the various three-phase faults such as the single line-to-ground fault, the double line-to-ground fault, the triple line-to-ground fault. From the experimental results, the fault current limiting characteristic was improved according to increase of fault current level.
This paper presents the transient and conventional grounding impedance behaviors of large grid grounding system associated with the injection point of impulse current The measurement methods consider two possible errors in the grounding-system impedances: (1) ground mutual resistance due to current flow through ground from the ground electrode to be measured to the current auxiliary, (2) ac mutual coupling between the current test lead and the potential test lead The test circuit was set to reduce the error factors. The transient grounding impedance depends on the rise time and injection point of impulse current It is effective that grounding conductor is connected to the center of the large grid grounding system.
This paper proposed an high-speed superconducting fault current limiter (H-SFCL). The proposed H-SFCL functioned the initial fault current could be covered by the SFCL and the continued fault current after the one-cycle from fault occurrence could be controlled current-limiting-element of the normal conduction. To investigate the operation characteristics of the H-SFCL, a simulation power system was constructed, and a single line-to-ground fault was occurred. As a result, the H-SFCL limited the fault current by more than about 70%, and it was confirmed that the electric power burden was reduced compared to the SFCL that consisted only of superconductors.
