  • Ground state energy levels of $Gd^{3+}$ ion (effective spin S = 7/2) in $PbWO_4$ single crystal doped with $Gd^{3+}$ paramagnetic impurity at tetragonal symmetry are calculated with spectroscopic splitting parameters and zero field splitting parameters using by effective spin Hamiltonian. It turns out that the zero field splitting energies of $Gd^{3+}$ ion were the same regardless of the directions of $PbWO_4$ : Gd single crystal. The calculated energy differences for ${\mid{\pm}7/2}$ > ${\leftrightarrow}{\mid{\pm}5/2}$ >, ${\mid{\pm}5/2}$ > ${\leftrightarrow}{\mid{\pm}3/2}$ >, and ${\mid{\pm}3/2}$ > ${\leftrightarrow}{\mid{\pm}1/2}$ > transitions were 6.9574 GHz, 6.9219 GHz, and 15.8704 GHz, respectively when the applied magnetic field is zero. The calculated energy level diagrams were different for different directions of applied magnetic field. For B // a- and c-axis, the energy level diagrams are calculated and discussed.

  • In order to evaluate the local site effects at two town fortress areas in Korea where stone parapets were col-lapsed by historical earthquakes, site characteristics were assessed using site investigations such as borehole drillings and seismic tests. Equivalent-linear site response analyses were conducted based on the shear ways velocity ($V_s$) profiles and geotechnical characteristics determined from site investigations. The study sites are categorized as site classes C and B according to the mean $V_s$ to 30 m ranging from 500 to 850 m/s, and their site periods are distributed in the short period range of 0.06 to 0.16 sec, which contains the natural period of fortress wall and stone parapet. From the results of site response analyses in the study areas, for site class C indicating most of site conditions, contrary to site class B, the short-period (0.1-0.5 sec) and mid-period (0.4-2.0 sec) site coefficients, $F_a$ and $F_v$ specified in the Korean seismic design guide, underestimate the ground motion in short-period band and overestimate the ground motion in mid-period band, respectively, due to the high amplification in short period range, which represent the site-specific seismic response characteristics. These site-specific response characteristics indicate the potential of resonance in fortress walls during earthquake and furthermore could strongly affect the collapse of parapets resulted from seismic events in historical records.

  • The problem has been pointed out that the domestic design response spectrum does not reflect site amplification, particularly in the high frequency bands, including the fact that site specific response spectrum from the observed ground motions appears relatively higher than design response spectrum. Among various methods, this study applied H/V spectral ratio of ground motion for estimating site amplification. This method, originated from S waves and Rayleigh waves, recently has been extended to Coda waves and background noise for estimating site amplification. For limited time of periods, 4 electric substation sites had operated seismic stations at two separate locations (bedrock and borehole) within each substation site. H/V spectral ratio of S wave, Coda wave, and background noise, was applied to 36 accelerations of 3 macro earthquakes (Odaesan, Jeju and Gongju earthquakes), larger than magnitude 3.4. observed simultaneously at each bedrock location within 4 electric substation sites. Site amplifications at the bedrock location of 4 sites were compared among S wave, Coda wave energy, and background noise, and then compared to the previous results from the borehole location data. The site classification was also tried using resonancy frequency information at each site and location. The results suggested that all the electric substation sites showed similar site amplification patterns among S wave, Coda wave, and background noise. Each station showed its own characteristics of site amplification property in low, high and specific resonance frequency ranges. Comparison of this study to other results using different method can give us much more information about dynamic amplification of domestic sites characteristics and site classification.

  • A study of the effects of dynamic pile-soil-structure interactions on the response of super- structures, supported by group piles, are presented in this paper. The dynamic impedance functions of single pile generated by soil-pile interactions are obtained and compared among others using the methods proposed by Novak, Gazetas, and Kuhlemeyer, and using the equivalent cantilever method. Group pile effects are also considered by the following approaches : neglecting interaction effects : group efficiency ratio concept : static interaction approach . and dynamic interaction approach. The responses of a nuclear containment structure are obtained by using the elastic half-space analysis, based on the impedance functions mentioned above. Main conclusions drawn from this study are as follows : 1. The numerical results of the impedance functions calculated by each method were quite different : the Novak's was the smallest, and the Kuhlemeyer's the highest. Considering group effects, similar values in each approach were obtained for the stiffness : the difference was very big for the damping. 2. The top displacement of the structure was reduced by 20% or more by pile installations. However, the base shear force, the base moment, and the resonance frequency were increased by more than two times due to stiffening effect of the ground by pile installations. 3. Whether frequency dependant impedence functions or frequency independant functions were used, the responses of the structure were not so much affected by the choice of the impedance functions. 4. The reduction effect of the top displacement increased with the increase of the maximum ground acceleration.

  • In this paper, a quad-band antenna for DCS1800, PCS1900, WCDMA, WLAN and Mobile WiMAX application is proposed. The proposed antenna is a printed monopole structure, and consists of two rectangular ring-shaped radiating patches on the front side and two different size of L-shaped slots on the back side(ground plane). Two rectangular ring radiation patches are respectively resonant at 2 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands, and additional resonance is occurred at 5.3 GHz by the coupling effect between two ring patches. In addition, the optimized matching characteristic is obtained by controlling the gaps. Also, by adding two L-slots on the ground plane, additional resonant frequency band of 5.6 GHz is occurred. Finally the measured bandwidths of the proposed antenna below -10 dB return loss are 1,200 MHz(1.6~2.8 GHz), 800 MHz(3.2~4.0 GHz), 300 MHz(5.14~5.44 GHz), and 690 MHz(5.56~6.25 GHz). The radiation patterns have the omni-directional characteristic, and the measured antenna average gains at resonant bands are 0.86~4.07 dBi.

  • We installed temporary strong motion seismometers at the ground surface, 1 m, 2 m, and 9 m at an existing seismic station that houses permanent seismometers installed at 20 m and 100 m, to investigate the influence of installation depth on the recorded ambient and anthropogenic noise level and the characteristics of earthquake signals. Analysis of the ambient noise shows that anthropogenic noise dominates where vibration period T < 1 s at the studied site, whereas wind speed appears to be strongly correlated with the noise level at T > 1 s. Frequency-wavenumber analysis of 2D seismometer array suggests that ambient noise in short periods are predominantly body waves, rather than surface waves. The level of ambient noise was low at 9 m and 20 m, but strong amplification of noise level at T < 0.1 s was observed at the shallow seismometers. Both the active-source test result and the recorded earthquake data demonstrated that the signal level is decreased with the increase of depth. Our result also shows that recorded motions at the ground and 1 m are strongly amplified at 20 Hz (T = 0.05 s), likely due to the resonance of the 3 m thick soil layer. This study demonstrates that analysis of ambient and active-source vibration may help find optimal installation depth of strong motion seismometers. We expect that further research considering various noise environments and geological conditions will be helpful in establishing a guideline for optimal installation of strong motion seismometers.

  • In this paper, the metamaterial transmission line (TL) based on the complementary spiral resonators (CSRs) and interdigital structure is presented for reducing the phase noise of the voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The metamaterial TL is realized by adopting the array of the CSRs etched on the ground plane and the interdigital transmission line on the signal plane. The interdigital TL on the signal plane has been used to obtain higher Q value than the conventional TL without the interdigital structure. The resonance properties and inherent saturation of Q value of the proposed metamaterial TL have been analyzed by varying the width of the TL on the signal plane, dimensions of the CSRs, current directions between the CSRs, number of the unit cell-pair of the CSRs, and whether or not there is the interdigital structure in this paper. The phase noise and tuning range of the proposed VCO are -127.50~-125.33 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz and 5.744~5.852 GHz.

  • In order to reduce the size of the previous stepped slot antenna for UWB applications(3.1 ~ 10.6 GHz) to half, an open ended stepped slot antenna is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of a stepped slot etched on the ground plane as radiation part and a microstrip feed-line with rectangular patch on the top plane for wideband impedance matching. The proposed antenna is designed and fabricated on the FR4 substrate with dielectric constant of 4.3, thickness of 1.6 mm and size of $28.5{\times}32mm^2$. The measured impedance bandwidth (${\mid}S_{11}{\mid}{\leq}-10dB$) of the fabricated antenna is 7.99 GHz(3.01~11 GHz) which is sufficient to cover UWB band (3.1 ~ 10.6 GHz). In particular, it has been observed that antenna has a good omnidirectional radiation patterns and high gain over the entire frequency band of interest even though the size of the proposed antenna is reduced to half when compared with the previous antenna.

  • Kinetic studies have been performed for alkaline hydrolysis of a series of [(methoxy)(p-substituted styryl)carbene]pentacarbonyl chromium(0) complexes ($(CO)_5$Cr=$C(OCH_3)CH=CHC_6H_4X$, X = p-$OCH_3$, p-$CH_3$, H, p-Cl, p-$NO_2$). Second-order rate constants $(k_{{OH}^-})$ for the alkaline hydrolysis in 50% acetonitrile-water(v/v) were determined spectrophotometrically at various temperatures. At a low pH region (pH < 7.5), the observed rate constant $(k_{obs})$ remained constant with a small value, while in a high pH region (pH > 9.5), $k_{obs}$ increases linearly with increasing the pH of the medium. The second-order rate constants $(k_{{OH}^-})$ increase as the substituent X changes from a strong electron donating group to a strong electron withdrawing group. The Hammett plot obtained for the alkaline hydrolysis is consisted of two intersecting straight lines. The nonlinear Hammett plot might be interpreted as a change in the rate-determining step. However, the fact that the corresponding Yukawa-Tsuno plot is linear with $\rho$ and r values of 0.71 and 1.14, respectively indicates that the nonlinear Hammett plot is not due to a change in the rate-determing step but is due to ground-state stabilization through resonance interaction. The positive $\rho$ value suggests that nucleophilic attack by $OH^-$ to form a tetrahedral addition intermediate is the rate-determining step. The large negative ${\Delta}S^\neq$ value determined in the present system is consistent with the proposed mechanism.
