  • Second-order rate constants have been measured spectrophotometrically for the Michael-type reaction of 1-(Xsubstituted phenyl)-2-propyn-1-ones (2a-f) with amines in $H_2O$ at 25.0 ${\pm}$ 0.1 ${^{\circ}C}$. A linear Brønsted-type plot is obtained with ${\beta}_{nuc}$ = 0.25 ${\pm}$ 0.02, a typical $\beta_{nuc}$ value for reactions which proceed through a stepwise mechanism with attack of amine on the electrophilic center being the rate-determining step. Secondary alicyclic amines are found to be more reactive than isobasic primary amines. The Hammett plot for the reactions of 2a-f with morpholine is not linear, i.e., the substrate with a strong electron-donating group (e.g., 4-MeO) exhibits a negative deviation from the Hammett plot. However, the Yukawa-Tsuno plot for the same reactions exhibits an excellent linear correlation with ρ = 0.62 and r = 0.82. Thus, it has been proposed that the nonlinear Hammett plot is not due to a change in the ra te-determining step but due to ground-state stabilization through resonance interactions.

  • This study investigated the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on the response of base-isolated buildings. Seismic isolation can significantly reduce the induced seismic loads on a relatively stiff building by introducing flexibility at its base and avoiding resonance with the predominant frequencies of common earthquakes. To provide a better understanding of the movement behavior of multi-story structures during earthquakes, this study analyzed the dynamic behavior of multi-story structures with high damping rubber bearing (HDRB) behavior base isolation systems that were built on soft soil. Various models were developed, both with and without consideration of SSI. Both the superstructure and soil were modeled linearly, but HDRB was modeled non-linearly. The behavior of the specified models under dynamic loads was analyzed using SAP2000 computer software. Erzincan, Marmara and Duzce Earthquakes were chosen as the ground motions. Following the analysis, the displacements, base shear forces, top story accelerations, base level accelerations, periods and maximum internal forces were compared in isolated and fixed-base structures with and without SSI. The results indicate that soil-structure interaction is an important factor (in terms of earthquakes) to consider in the selection of an appropriate isolator for base-isolated structures on soft soils.

  • In this work, the reactions of carbamyl and thiocarbamyl halides with $NH_3$ were studied in the gas phase at the MP2(FC)/6-31+G(d) level of theory. Single point calculations were performed at the QCISD/6-311+G(3df,2p) to refine the energetics. The reaction mechanisms were also studied in aqueous solution. The structures were fully optimized at the CPCM-MP2(FC)/6-31+G(d) and refined by a single point CPCM-QCISD/6-311+G(3df,2p) calculations. The reaction mechanisms for the title compounds were compared with those for the acetyl and thioacetyl halides. The lower reactivity of carbamyl (and thiocarbamyl) groups was explained by comparing the C=O and C=S ${\pi}$-bond strengths as well as resonance contributions in the ground state.

  • Here we describe a unique self-oscillating mixer (SOM) design using a modified defected ground structure (DGS) for down-converter. Proposed SOM is consisted of self-oscillator, which can produce negative resistance and select resonance frequency, and input/output matching filter. As the advantage of this SOM can be reused by module that mix signals with transistor that is used to oscillator, it is simply and low-costly designed Also, there is easy advantage to be applied in RFIC/ MMIC technology because it offers excellent high Q value in spite of using micro-strip structure. Designed self-oscillating frequency is 1.04GHz and RF frequency established is 0.8GHz. It was achieved 20dB conversion loss and phase noise of -95dBc/Hz at 100KHz offset frequency over intermediate frequency (IF). The equivalent circuit parameters for DGS are extracted by using a three dimensional EM simulator and simple circuit analysis method.

  • In general, CT and Shunt have been traditionally used as a sensor for detecting the partial discharges in order to diagnose the present insulation state of the electric power apparatus. The former is very convenient for the practical application since it is not only non-contact method but its frequency bandwidth and resonance frequency could be designed for its specific application. However, it has been proved to have poor linearity and low sensitivity. For the latter, even though it is an ideal sensor, noise from the power source and the ground could flow into the system. Furthermore, the surge current could be easily come into the measuring systems giving rise to a severe breakdown. In this respect, a hybrid sensor has been designed and fabricated in order to overcome the shortcoming of these two types of sensors. For this purpose, the experimental comparison with commercialized products has been also carried out. In this concept of the hybrid sensor, two different impedances could provide the passage of the signals. In this way, the discrimination of the noise could be accomplished very effectively with high ratio of signal over noise(S/N) under the little influence from the external noises and the breakdown.

  • The equilibrium geometrical structures of silver atom clusters at their electronic ground states have been theo-retically determined by using the nonrelativistic semiempirical INDO/1 method. The clusters investigated are Agn, Agn+, and Agn- (n = 7 , 8, 9). In order to find the most stable structure, i.e., the global minimum in energy hypersurface, geometry optimization and energy calculation processes have been repeatedly performed for all the possible graphical models by changing the bond parameters (resonance integral values). The heptamers are pentagonal bipyramidal-Ag7(D5h), Ag7+ (D5h), Ag7- (D5h); the octamers are pentagonal bipyramidal with one atom capped-Ag8(D2d), Ag8+ (Cs), Ag8- (D2d); the nonamers are pentagonal bipyramidal with two atoms capped -Ag9(C2v), Ag9+ (C2v), Ag9- (C2v). Our structures are in good agreement with those by ab initio calculations ex-cept for the anionic Ag9- cluster. And it is noted that the INDO/1 method can accurately predict the Ag cluster geometries when a proper set of bond parameters is used.

  • Many building foundations are embedded, however it is not easy to compact the backfill around the foundation especially for the deeply embedded ones. The soil condition around the embedded foundation may affect the seismic response of a building due to the weak contact between the soil and the foundation. In this paper, the response accelerations in the short-period range and at the period of 1 second (in the long-period range) for a seismic design spectrum specified in the IBC design code were compared considering perfect and poor backfills to investigate the effect of backfill compaction around the embedded foundation. An in-house finite-element software (P3DASS) which has the capability of horizontal pseudo-3D seismic analysis with linear soil layers was used to perform the seismic analyses of the structure-soil system with an embedded foundation. Seismic analyses were carried out with 7 bedrock earthquake records provided by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER), scaling the peak ground accelerations to 0.1 g. The results indicate that the poor backfill is not detrimental to the seismic response of a building, if the foundation is not embedded deeply in the soft soil. However, it is necessary to perform the seismic analysis for the structure-soil system embedded deeply in the soft soil to check the seismic resonance due to the soft soil layer beneath the foundation, and to compact the backfill as well as possible.

  • The megacity Istanbul was struck by an earthquake on September 26, 2019, with a moment magnitude (Mw) of 5.8. The mainshock was followed by many aftershocks. Although the peak ground acceleration (PGA) of the mainshock was as low as 0.08 g, its effect has been more than expected. The intensive reconnaissance studies were accomplished in the highly populated Zeytinburnu and Pendik districts of Istanbul. While the earthquake (EQ) was relatively smaller concerning record-specific intensity measures; the damages such as concrete spalling in reinforced concrete (RC) members, detachment and diagonal cracking of infill walls in RC frames as well as cracks in masonry structures were reported from non-engineered and some engineered buildings. Many studies in the literature state that record-specific intensity measures are not sufficient to evaluate the seismic performance of the structures. The structure-specific intensity measures, soil characteristics, as well as significant duration, energy, and frequency content of EQs should be considered for the evaluation. Dependently, the frequency and energy contents of the Istanbul Earthquake are evaluated to discuss the possible reasons for the perceived effects and the damages. It is concluded that the EQ caused resonance effects on a variety of structures because of its complex frequency content as well as rather low building quality.
