The numerical simulations of flow and pollutant particle dispersion are described for two-dimensional bell shaped hills with various aspect ratios. The Reynolds-averaged incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with low Reynolds number $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model are used to simulate the flowfield. The gradient diffusion equation is used to solve the pollutant dispersion field. The code was validated by comparison of velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, Reynolds shear stress, speed-up ratio, and ground level concentration with experimental and numerical data. Good agreement has been achieved and it has been found that the pollutant dispersion pattern and ground level concentration have been strongly influenced by the hill shape and aspect ratio, as well as the location and height of the source.
A prototype GIS-based decision support system (DSS) was developed by using a database management system (DBMS), a model management system (MMS), a knowledge-based system (KBS), a graphical user interface (GUI), and a geographical information system (GIS). The method of selecting a dispersion model or a modeling scheme, originally devised by Park and Seok, was developed using our GIS-based DSS. The performances of candidate models or modeling schemes were evaluated by using a single index(statistical score) derived by applying fuzzy inference to statistical measures between the measured and predicted concentrations. The fumigation dispersion model performed better than the models such as industrial source complex short term model(ISCST) and atmospheric dispersion model system(ADMS) for the prediction of the ground level $SO_2$ (1 hr) concentration in a coastal area. However, its coincidence level between actual and calculated values was poor. The neural network models were found to improve the accuracy of predicted ground level $SO_2$ concentration significantly, compared to the fumigation models. The GIS-based DSS may serve as a useful tool for selecting the best prediction model, even for complex terrains.

The diurnal variation of O3 concentration shows two peaks, the first peak at noontime and the secondary peak at night. In order to show why the secondary peak, high nocturnal O3 concentration, occurs without sunlight which is a essential factor of a photochemical response, the O3 concentration, several weather elements and synoptic weather map were used for June∼September at 1995, 1996. The mean concentration of high nocturnal O3 concentration days is higher by 5.4 ppb than that of low nocturnal O3 concentration days. The nocturnal O3 concentration is higher than that of diurnal O3 concentration during high nocturnal O3 concentration days, at July, 1995 and June, 1996. The high nocturnal O3 concentration is related to low air pressure, high cloud cover and high wind speed. The correlation coefficient, r. between nocturnal O3 concentration and wind speed, pressure and cloud cover is 0.387, -0.218, and 0.194, respeftiviely. It is interesting that the O3 concentration increases at Pusan when the typhoon passes by. The same result showed at Taegu when the typhoon FAYE passed by. According to the analysis of nocturnal O3 concentration for June∼September at 1995 and 1996, it seems that the high nocturnal O3 concentration relates to the trough and cyclones passing by Pusan.

In this paper, as a basic research for the restoration and construction of easuary saltmarsh, To observe the habitat environment for reed, we observed sediment environment (Particle size, water content, pH, nutrient analysis ($NH_4-N$, $PO_4-P$)), ground water level, ground level, individual numbers of reed, maximum reed height. As a result of this study, sediment particle size and moisture content of soil on the study area not effected reed habitat, pH showed no difference in each site. $NH_4-N$ and $PO_4-P$ concentration also no difference in each site. Ground level of reed habitat area is more higher than none reed habitat. However Ground water level of reed habitat area is more lower than none reed habitat. As a results of analyzing the influence factors for reed habitat in Nakdong estuary saltmarsh, ground water level and ground level is most influenced factor for reed habitat.
Vertical distribution of particle mass concentrations was estimated from 8-year elastic-backscatter lidar and sky radiometer data, and from ground-level PM10 concentrations measured in Seoul. Lidar ratio and mass extinction efficiency were determined from aerosol optical depth (AOD) and ground-level PM10 concentrations, which were used as constraints to estimate particle mass concentration. The mean lidar ratio (with standard deviation) and mass extinction efficiency for the entire 8-year study period were $60.44{\pm}23.17$ sr and $3.69{\pm}3.00m^2g^{-1}$, respectively. The lidar ratio did not vary significantly with the ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent (less than ${\pm}10%$); however, the mass extinction efficiency decreases to $1.82{\pm}1.67m^2g^{-1}$ (51% less than the mean value) when the ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent is less than 0.5. This result implies that the particle mass concentration from lidar measurements can be underestimated for dust events. Seasonal variation of the particle mass concentration estimated from lidar measurements for the boundary layer, was quite different from ground-level PM10 measurements. This can be attributable to an inhomogeneous vertical distribution of aerosol in the boundary layer.
Bioactive components of ultra-fine ground Saururus, the extraction yield increases when the leaves are ultra-fine ground. Comparison of normal-ground and ultra-fine ground Saururus chinensis leaves showed that the solid content and antiinflammatory activity of ultra-fine ground extracts was higher than that of normal-ground extracts. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated Raw 264.7 cells were treated with different concentrations of Saururus chinensis extract and the amount of nitric oxide (NO) was determined; LPS-treated cells produced 2 times more NO than cells that were not treated with LPS. Moreover, the NO production in cells treated with Saururus chinensis extract was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner. Because the stimulant-induced NO production is regulated by the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), we measured the iNOS protein level to elucidate the mechanism by which the NO production was inhibited. We found that the amount of iNOS decreased dose-dependently. It was reduced by 53% at a Saururus chinensis extract concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. The protein expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in LPS-treated Raw 264.7 cells was inhibited by 31% at $100{\mu}g/mL$ of Saururus chinensis extract. Gel shift of the nuclear factor kappa B-DNA complex occurred in LPS-treated cells and the intensity of the band decreased gradually in a concentration-dependent manner. Ultra-fine ground Saururus chinensis extract had a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on the production of prostaglandin $E_2$, tumor necrosis factor ${\alpha}$, interleukin $1{\beta}$ (IL-$1{\beta}$), IL-6, and IL-8 in LPS-treated Raw 264.7 cells, i.e., at $50{\mu}g/mL$ of Saururus chinensis extract, their levels were decreased by 53, 67, 52, 37, and 21% respectively.
Centrifuge model experiments were performed to investigate the confining effects of the sheet piles, installed to the sides of soft clay ground treated with sand compaction piles, on the bearing capacity and concentration ratio of composite ground. For the given g-level in the centrifuge model tests, replacement ratio of SCP and the width of surcharge loads on the surface of ground with SCP, the confining effects of installing the sheet piles on the edges of SCP ground on the bearing capacity, change of stress concentration ratio and failure mechanism were investigated. Kaolin, one of typical clay mineral, and Jumunjin standard sand were used as a soft clay ground and sand compaction pile irrespectively. As results of experiments, lateral confining effect by inserting the model sheet piles fixed to the loading plate was observed. For the strip surcharge loading condition, the yielding stress intensity in the form of the strip surcharge loads tends to increase with increasing the embedded depth of sheet piles. The stress concentration ratio was found not to be influenced consistently with the embedded depth of sheet piles whereas the effect of stress intensity on stress concentration ratio shows the general trend that values of stress concentration ratio are relatively high at the initial stage of loading and tend to decrease and converge to the certain values. For the failure mechanism in the case of reinforced with sheet piles, displacement behavior related to the punching failure, settlement right beneath the loading plate occurred since the soil was confined with sheet piles, was observed.
The dispersion of suspended particulates in the coastal complex terrain of mountain-inland basin (city)-sea, considering their recycling was investigated using three-dimensional non-hydrostatic numerical model and lagrangian particle model (or random walk model). Convective boundary layer under synoptic scale westerly wind is developed with a thickness of about I km over the ground in the west of the mountain, while a thickness of thermal internal boundary layer (TIBL) is only confined to less than 200m along the eastern slope of the mountain, below an easterly sea breeze circulation. At the mid of the eastern slop of the mountain, westerly wind confronts easterly sea breeze, which goes to the height of 1700 m above sea level and is finally eastward return flow toward the sea. At this time, particulates floated from the ground surface of the city to the top of TIBL go along the eastern slope of the mountain in the passage of sea breeze, being away the TIBL and reach near the top of the mountain. Then those particulates disperse eastward below the height of sea-breeze circulation and widely spread out over the coastal sea. Total suspended particulate concentration near the ground surface of the city is very low. On the other hand, nighttime radiative cooling produces a shallow nocturnal surface inversion layer (NSIL) of 200 m thickness over the inland surface, but relatively thin thickness less than 100m is found near the mountain surface. As synoptic scale westerly wind should be intensified under the association of mountain wind along the eastern slope of mountain to inland plain and further combine with land-breeze from inland plain toward sea, resulting in strong wind as internal gravity waves with a hydraulic jump motion bounding up to about 1km upper level in the atmosphere in the west of the city and becoming a eastward return flow. Simultaneously, wind near the eastern coastal side of the city was moderate. Since the downward strong wind penetrated into the city, the particulate matters floated near the top of the mountain in the day also moved down along the eastern slope of the mountain, reaching the. downtown and merging in the ground surface inside the NSIL with a maximum ground level concentration of total suspended particulates (TSP) at 0300 LST. Some of them were bounded up from the ground surface to the 1km upper level and the others were forward to the coastal sea surface, showing their dispersions from the coastal NSIL toward the propagation area of internal gravity waves. On the next day at 0600 LST and 0900 LST, the dispersed particulates into the coastal sea could return to the coastal inland area under the influence of sea breeze and the recycled particulates combine with emitted ones from the ground surface, resulting in relatively high TSP concentration. Later, they float again up to the thermal internal boundary layer, following sea breeze circulation.
This study was performed to develop the dispersion modeling methodology for quantitative prediction of the hazard distance or toxic buffer distance by comparing 10-min average, 30-min average, and 1-hr average maximum ground-level concentration with $Cl_2$ regultaion concentration, IDLH and ERPG-3 concentration for hazardous toxic gas, $Cl_2$ releases from the storage tank of the chemical plant facilities. For this dispersion modeling, the source term model, dispersion model, meteorological and topographical data are incorporated into the SuperChems model, and then the effects of the atmospheric stability, wind speed, and surface roughness length changes on the maxum ground-level concentration were estimated.

One-hour average concentrations of ground-level ozone from around 80 monitoring stations in Korea during 1991 to 1993 were analyzed to examine characteristics of the ozone concentration variations. Two types of variations were observed: one was for the Capital area typified by Kwanghwmun, and the other was for the south and east seashore region typified by Tongkwangyang. In the Capital area including Seoul, Inchon, Kyonggi-do and Chunchon, mean daily 1-hout maximum was the highest in June following high monthly averages in spring. But frequent precipitation prevented further rise of daily maximum in July and August even though there were frequent episodes of high concentration exceeding 100ppb. In the south and east seashore region, average concentration was the highest throughout the year, and daily maximum and minimum simultaneously changed owing to small contributions from photochemical reactions. The typical annual variation was spring peak, summer down, and fall rise. Spring peak accompanied an usual observations of background variations at remote sites in the Northern Hemisphere. Riess of average and daily maximum with lower daily minimum in fall were attributable to photochemical reactions.
