This article is a case study for the example of the foundation design, in the project area of the silty sand layer that is spread shallowly with loose status, to make the site for a structure and build it up. The site is located on the dredged and reclaimed land in Gun-San and In-Cheon that is formed the silty sand layer with loose status range around 10 meters underground level, the solid ground for the lower pile is shown around 20 meters underground level. Therefore, this area has to be done by ground improvement when applying for the shallow method of foundation. Dynamic compaction method considering the conditions of the design loads in each zone has to be decided through comparative review on the method of foundations and pilot field test was conducted, and drilling investigation and plate bearing test were achieved as well. The analysis results of the tests prove that stability against bearing capacity was acquired by ground improvement effect.

As the mechanism and effect range of subsidence are altered according to the various conditions (the ground condition, the earth pressure, the geometric condition of underground cavity and the structure load), the analysis and prediction of subsidence in abandoned mining area are very difficult. Also, as the geological characteristics and the mining methods are differed in each mines, the application of the pre-existing reinforcements without improvement has a lot of difficulties and limits. In this study, the various underground investigation such as long-depth core drilling, seismic tomography and BIPS (borehole image processing system) were performed, the distribution of underground cavity and coal seam and rock relaxation condition were analyzed. And we predicted the type of subsidence and estimated the subsidence by theories of mining subsidence. With these results, we analyzed the mechanism of subsidence occurrence in the research object area. Finally, we improved existing methods which were applied to the abandoned mining area and also we established the rational reinforcement for the ground and structure foundation against each subsidence cause.
In order to identify the characteristics of the propagation depending on delay time (20, 25 ms) and priming location (top priming, middle priming, bottom priming), test blasts were carried out a total of 4 times using different spacing, burden, drilling length, charge per delay and was derived the formula to predict blast vibration. This study investigated the characteristics of vibration by analysis of the nomogram and prediction of Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) from delay time and priming location by the formula to predict ground vibration. And it analyzed the trends of vibration increase by standards charge 0.5, 1.6, 5, 15 kg. Standards charge is "Blasting design and construction guidelines to road construction" by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Depending on the charge in favor of vibration control method is proposed. Thus, when the design was to be used as a variable.

The national spatial information systems project which is promoted by our country has been extended from existing 2-D geographic information to 3-D spatial information as the basic geo-spatial Information. Most of the construction of the ground geo-spatial information are completed or underway, on the other hand, the construction of the subsurface geo-spatial information has difficulty caused by the lack of the drilling data characterizing the subsurface. In terms of the construction of the geo-spatial information of the subsurface, the subsurface information is constructed and managed by the domestic institutions, but the subsurface information which is possessed by the institutions was not shared mutually so it is managed inefficiently. This study presented the 3-D national underground information DB design by dividing with the ground DB item which configures the state of the ground and the soil DB item which configures the state of the soil in order to increase the efficiency of the construction of the subsurface spatial information. The implementation & utilization of the national underground information application technology was reviewed by applying the constructed DB to the actual model area, and the national underground information knowledge-based community establishment plan was presented.

Since the depth of tunneling with tunnel boring machine (TBM) becomes deeper and deeper, the expense for site investigation for coring and geophysical survey increases to obtain the sufficient accuracy. The tunnel ahead prediction methods have been introduced to overcome this limitation in the stage of site investigation. Probe drilling can obtain the core and borehole images from a borehole. However, the space in TBM for the probe drilling equipment is restricted and the core from probe drilling cannot reflect the whole tunnel face. Seismic methods such as tunnel seismic prediction (TSP) can forecast over 100 m ahead from the tunnel face though the signal is usually generated using the explosive which can affect the stability of segments and backfill grout. Electromagnetic methods such as tunnel electrical resistivity prospecting system (TEPS) offer the exact prediction for a conductive zone such as water-bearing zone. However, the number of electrodes installed for exploration is limited in small diameter TBM and finally the reduction of prediction ranges. In this study, the theoretical equations for the electrical resistivity survey whose electrodes are installed in the face and side of TBM to minimize the installed electrodes on face. The experimental tests were conducted to verify the derived equations.

In this study, required drill bits and excavation methods were developed for an uneven drilling method that can solve the problem of performance degradation of rock bolts. The developed drill bit's excavation performance was verified using rock with a strength of 100 MPa or more. In addition, for the relative evaluation of the uneven excavation method, experimental specimens were prepared for models with and without irregularities, and tests were performed. As a result of the experiment, the model with unevenness exhibited an average critical draw resistance of 801.6 kN, which is about 1.7 times the value of 468.7 kN for the model without unevenness, thus confirming the effect sufficiently. Therefore, it is expected that the resistance performance will significantly increase despite an increase in the uneven hole diameter of 20 mm. In the future, the results of this study could be used as basic data when performing other studies using numerical analysis models and performance verification through experiments to obtain an optimized rock forming method.

In this study, to prevent possible collapse caused by hydraulic or mechanical instability, liquid nitrogen injection method is developed and implemented at the tip of drilling auger of steel pipe propulsion tunneling. In this study, 1/5-scale model auger and sand chamber were manufactured. The prototype diameter of steel pile (or casing) is assumed about 1,000 mm. For the frictional sandy soils and plastic weathered soils, liquid nitrogen injection methods were tested varying water contents of the soils. For the induced hydraulic instability, the ground near the drilling auger was frozen within approximately 5 minutes preventing mechanical collapse and water infiltration. Securing stability of steel pile propulsion tunneling using liquid nitrogen was much more effective for which the water content of the soil somewhat exceeds the optimum water content.

Dam slope RIM is a highly important contact interface where the main body and the base surface are connected. In general, when the grouting for the slope of the dam structure is designed, it is planned using limited data (drilling, geological map, etc.). This makes it very difficult to accurately consider the original ground characteristics of the slope RIM grouting target, In addition, when the grouting volume planned during the design is drilled and injected into the original ground where the waterstop is secured, there is a possibility that the original ground with the waterstop is disturbed and the effect of the waterstop is rather diminished. In order to overcome such problems, it is more suitable to first consider geological conditions and determine whether to perform optimal grouting on the original ground through on-site repair tests before performing RIM grouting. In this paper, to determine the grouting of the RIM unit, a pilot hole water pressure test was performed on the rock of the slope in the target section. The analysis shows grouting volume of 1 Lugeon or less, and the cement injection amount also shows the injection result of 1 kg/m or less. In this case, performing grouting is rather counterproductive. This result can be evaluated through a rock of which some degree of order of mass is secured, as it is a dam design standard of 1 Lugeon or less when analyzed, using the results of visual observation and geological map creation during slope cutting. Therefore, in conclusion, it is preferable to make the decision for using RIM grouting on the slope of the dam body structure, based on 1 Lugeon in a rock state, and the cement injection amount also at 1 kg/m.

This experiment was carried out to examine the effects of sowing method and summer management on the dry matter yield, dead matter, weed development and ground cover of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) meadow. The experiment was allocated as a split-split plot design with three replications. The main plots were sowing method of drilling and broadcasting, sub plots were drainage of experimental field, adequate and inadequate, and sub-sub plots were cutting timeof orchardgrass, cutting before rainy season started and cutting after rainy season ended. The experiment was undertaken over a period of 14 months from September, 1983 to October, 1984. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. There were no significant differences in dry matter yield among treatments at the first cutting, but cutting before rainy season produced significantly more forage yield ($P{\le}0.01$) than cutting after rainy season at the second and third cuts. At the third cutting, drilled orchardgrass meadow showed a significant dry matter yield ($P{\le}0.05$) than broadcast orchardgrass meadow, 2. The dead matter of orchardgrass was accumulated only at the second cutting when orchardgrass meadow cut after rainy season. Orchardgrass produced in the adequate and inadequate drainage plots consisted 20.4 and 35.9% of dead material, respectively, but no significant difference was found between two drainage treatments. 3. Drilled orchardgrass meadow produced significantly less weeds ($P{\le}0.05$) than broadcast orchardgrass meadow, but the plots cut after rainy season produced significantly more weeds ($P{\le}0.01$) than the plots cut before rainy season. 4. The percent ground cover of orchardgrass in the plots cut before rainy season was significantly higher ($P{\le}0.01$) than that in the plots cut after rainy season at the second cutting. Drilled plots showed a slight increase in the ground cover than the broadcast, but the difference was not significant. The same trend of ground cover of the meadow estimated at the second cutting was sustained after the third cutting. 5. Based on the results of the experiment, it indicates that the second cut of orchardgrass should be made before rainy season related for maintaining high yield of the meadow. Drilling as a sowing method of orchardgrass meadow could be adopted in the view point of reducing weed development.
In order to survey archaeological sites, drilling and excavation are carried out at the final stage. However, at the preliminary stage, non-excavation geophysical prospection is used for assessing underground archaeological ruins. Among the geophysical prospecting techniques, Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) prospection has effectively been applied to historical sites due to its high resolution at shallow depths. In this study, the GPR prospection was conducted to find underground ruins near Suseong-Dang, the place of ancient rituals in Buan area, Korea. First, the GPR prospection was conducted at three sites (Site-1, 2, and 3), and subsequently, the GPR prospection was carried out at Site-3 in more detail. As a result of the prospection, the underground layered structure of the survey area consists of three layers, which are soil layer, weathered rock, and sound rock from the surface. And the GPR anomaly to the archaeological structure was clearly identified at around 100-cm depth showing est-west direction that is parallel to the long-axis array. This GPR anomaly of irregular geomorphological features and intermittent distribution may be related to the ritual remains found in Suseong Dang. The GPR prospection could be effectively used to detect archaeological sites or remains buried in the ground.
