  • The purpose of this study is to propose an evaluation method to assess green environments of streetscapes to improve urban street green spaces in Jeonju City. Through a rapid assessment of urban street green spaces, we suggest an objective basis for expanding street green space as well as for adopting sustainable maintenance and improvement measures. We choose 12 sections of streetscapes (roads and sidewalks) to investigate existing street conditions which have more than four lanes and function as major road axes. Six large roads and six medium roads of Jeonju City center area are investigated as pilot assessment study sites. Site inventory checklists consist of environmental characteristics of streetscape, street tree status, and planting condition evaluation. Environmental characteristics of streetscapes are composed of physical and neighborhood factors. For instance, items for physical factors are types and width of road/sidewalks, paving materials, tree protection materials, and green strip. And surrounding landuse is a neighborhood factor. Assessment items for street tree status are street plant names (tree/shrubs/ground cover), size, and planting intervals. Planting condition evaluation items are tree shape, damage, canopy density, and planting types with existence of adjacent green space. Evaluation results are classified into three levels such as A(maintain or repair), B(greening enhancement), and C(structural improvement). In case of grade A, streetscapes have enough sidewalk width for maintaining green strip and a multi-layered planting(in large road only) with fairly good growing conditions of street trees. For grade B and C, streetscapes have a moderate level of sidewalk width with a single street tree planting. In addition, street tree growing conditions are appeared poor so that green enhancement or maintenance measures are needed. For median, only grade B and C are found as its planting growing foundations are very limited in space. As a result, acquiring enough sidewalk space is essential to enhance ecological quality of urban street green. Especially, it is necessary to have green strip with reasonable widths for plant growing conditions in sidewalks. In addition, we need to consider native species with multi-layer plant compositions while designing street green.

  • The effects of hydro-meteorological and surface variables on the frequency of Asian dust events (FAE) were investigated using ground station and satellite-based data. Present weather codes 7, 8, and 9 derived from surface synoptic observations (SYNOP)were used for counting FAE. Surface wind speed (SWS), air temperature (Ta), relative humidity (RH), and precipitation were analyzed as hydro-meteorological variables for FAE. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), land surface temperature (LST), and snow cover fraction (SCF) were used to consider the effects of surface variables on FAE. The relationships between FAE and hydro-meteorological variables were analyzed using Z-score and empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. Although all variables expressed the change of FAE, the degrees of expression were different. SWS, LST, and Ta (indices applicable when Z-score was < 0) explained about 63.01, 58.00, and 56.17% of the FAE,respectively. For NDVI, precipitation, and RH, Asian dust events occurred with a frequency of about 55.38, 67.37, and 62.87% when the Z-scores were > 0. EOF analysis for the FAE showed the seasonal cycle, change pattern, and surface influences related to dryness condition for the FAE. The intensity of SWS was the main cause for change of FAE, but surface variables such as LST, SCF, and NDVI also were expressed because wet surface conditions suppress FAE. These results demonstrate that not only SWS and precipitation, but also surface variables, are important and useful precursors for monitoring Asian dust events.

  • For stable cultivation in double cropping, it is important to use potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars with a short dormancy period of 50-70 days and plant seed tubers of appropriate type and size. An experiment was conducted during 2018-2019 to investigate the effects of seed tuber type and size on growth and yield performance in double cropping. Whole tubers of three sizes (10-20 g, 30-40 g, and 50-60 g) and conventional cut tubers weighing 30-40 g from three cultivars with different dormancy periods, namely 'Daeji' (40-60 days), 'Eunsun' (50-60 days), and 'Saebong' (50-80 days), were planted, and their field performance was compared. Regardless of the cultivar, the increase in the whole tuber weight up to 30-40 g led to fast emergence, thereby increasing ground cover rate, shoot growth rate, and tuber growth rate, which ultimately improved tuber yield by 33-54%. Comparing the whole and cut tubers, 'Daeji' and 'Eunsun' showed similar growth and yield performance; as such, the performance of whole tubers weighing 10-20 g was comparable to that of cut tubers weighing 30-40 g. However, 'Saebong', a cultivar with relatively long dormancy period, performed better with cut tuber than with whole tubers. Based on these results, we recommend the use of whole tubers weighing over 30 g for double cropping. Further studies to break tuber dormancy are warranted in cultivars with relatively long dormancy periods (50-80 days), such as 'Saebong'.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the fertilizer sources and ground cover mulches on nutrient release, growth, and photosynthesis in small one-year-old apple (Malus ${\times}$ domestica Borkh.) trees in controlled conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Treatments included no fertilizer (NF), commercial organic fertilizer (CF), and poultry litter (PL) for fertilizer treatments, and wood chips (WC), shredded paper (SP), green compost (GC), and grass clippings (GR) for cover mulch treatments. All treatments were applied proportionally based on the volume ratio equivalent to the soil. CF, PL, and GR treatments that had optimum carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) ratios (less than 30:1) for N mineralization through the microbes released the greatest $NH_4^+$ concentrations in the pot media at 90 days after the treatments, but GC mulch with the optimum C:N ratio did not. CF-, PL- and GR-treated plants had the largest leaf area, thickest stem diameter, longest shoot extension, and greater dry matter production. CONCLUSION(s): CF and PL showed an suitable organic nutrient source for improving plant growth in an orchard. Interestingly, GR also could be a nutrient source for tree growth, if vegetation competition is controlled by maintaining vegetation height and recycling enough grass clippings to the soil in an orchard.

  • This study was conducted to compare the cold tolerance of seven ground cover species, Orostachys japonica, Sedum oryzifolium, S. kamtschaticum 'SG1', S. reflexum, S. rupestre 'Blue Spruce', S. spurium 'Green Mental', and S. takesimense, which have been used for green roof and wall systems in Korea. Plants were grown in 10-cm pots and 1 g of tissues at stem-end and crown of each species were kept under either light or dark condition, respectively. For cold tolerance tests, plants were initially left at $4^{\circ}C$ and linearly cooled to 0, -4, -8, -12, -16, and $-20^{\circ}C$ at $-2^{\circ}C{\cdot}h^{-1}$ rate. Low temperature injury and regrowth rates were visually evaluated and assessed by image analysis, respectively. The lethal temperature ($LT_{50}$) of plant species was determined using electrolyte leakage measurements. S. reflexum was the most cold tolerant, showing the most survival at $-16^{\circ}C$, whereas S. oryzifolium and S. takesimense showed low temperature injury at $-8^{\circ}C$. Similar results were found with electrolyte leakage measurements at the stem end. For each species, the crown (Mean $LT_{50}:\;-12.15^{\circ}C$) was more cold tolerant than the stem end (Mean $LT_{50}:\;-10.47^{\circ}C$). In conclusion, S. reflexum and S. rupestre 'Blue Spruce' are recommended for planting in the central region of Korea during late fall and early winter, as they were more cold tolerant and showed more vigorous regrowth than the other tested plant species.

  • This study was conducted to investigate bird community and to suggest a proper way how to manage and protect wildbirds in Chuwangsan National Park. The survey was carried out over two survey sections by the line transect method in spring, summer and autumn in 1994. Total number of observed birds were 42 species(33 species in spring, 32 species in summer, and 26 species in autumn), and the result was the same with the typical pattern of temperate bird communities. Total number of natural monument and rare birds were 7 species, which included Golden Eagle(Aquila chrysaetos), Chinese Sparrow Hawk(Accipter soloensis), Eagle Owl(Bubo bubo), etc. In breeding season, species richness was high in canopy nesting guild, and density(ea/ha) was high in hole nesting guild. Canopy foraging guild was dominated in spring and summer, ratio of bush(or ground) foraging guild was increased in autumn. Since the habitats of observed natural monuments and rare species were roughly overlapped with the nature preservation area, it is necessary to preserve the area completely and to investigate and protect these species continuously. For the protection of the bush(or ground) foraging guild, it needs to plant bushes around trails and to control users. Food plants, artificial food planting of bushs, and artificial nest are needed for the habituation of wildbirds, and as the damage of wild cats is increasing lately, it needs to control these cats.

  • This study estimated how much carbon can be sequestered if we plant trees in non-forested areas in the 36 hole Oak Valley Golf Courses in Gangwon Province, Korea. We identified plantable areas where planting trees will not affect golf game using high resolution aerial photography and ground survey and estimated the annual carbon sequestration rate of the planted trees using biomass equations. Of the golf courses, 30.3% were covered by forest. Other major land cover types include lawn, waterbody, baresoil, buildings, and roads. The plantable areas consist of $106,101m^2$ of lawn (6.0% of the study site) and $177,531m^2$ of low density forest (10.1% of the study site). We assumed to plant Mongolian oaks with 10 cm in diameter at brest height with the density of $0.3/m^2$ in the lawn and $0.2/m^2$ in the low density forest. The planting simulation shows that the total number of the newly planted trees were 67,336, and the total carbon sequestered during the subsequent year was 392.9 tC/yr, which offset 12.5% of the total carbon emitted from the golf courses. The annual carbon sequestration rate gradually increases and reaches its maximum level at 440.5 tC/yr in 15 years since the initial reforestation (14.0% of the carbon emission from the golf courses).

  • The present experiment was undertaken to study the influence of light intensity on plug establishment of zoysia-82, chewings fescue and red fescue. The results obtained are summarized as follows : In chewings fescue and zoysia-82, plant height and leaf length were increased and leaf width was decreased by reducing light intensity. But in red fescue, plant height and leaf length measured at 90 and 120 days after plugging under 9% of incident light were shorter than those under 30% of incident light. Percent ground cover was decreased by reducing light intensity in chewings fescue, red fescue and zoysia-82. Each part of dry weight in three species was getting lighter by reducing light intensity. Decrease of light intensity in zoysia-82 causes increasing chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll content. But red fescue and chewings fescue had the most plentiful chlorophyll under 30% of incident light. Chewings fescue and red fescue had the lowest concentration of chlorophyll a/b under natural light intensity. But zoysia-82 had the lowest concentration of chlorophyll a/b under 30% of incident light. Tillering number of chewings fescue and red fescue was decreased by reducing light intensity. Internode length of zoysia-82 was longer in the order of : 1) 30% of incident light, 2) natural light, 3) 9% of incident light. And internode diameter was decreased by reducing light intensity.
