  • This study presents a new nationwide quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) based on the hybrid surface rainfall (HSR) technique using the weather radar network of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). This new nationwide HSR is characterized by the synthesis of reflectivity at the hybrid surface that is not affected by ground clutter, beam blockage, non-meteorological echoes, and bright band. The nationwide HSR is classified into static (STATIC) and dynamic HSR (DYNAMIC) mosaic depending on employing a quality control process, which is based on the fuzzy logic approach for single-polarization radar and the spatial texture technique for dual-polarization radar. The STATIC and DYNAMIC were evaluated by comparing with official and operational radar rainfall mosaic (MOSAIC) of KMA for 10 rainfall events from May to October 2014. The correlation coefficients within the block region of STATIC, DYNAMIC and MOSAIC are 0.52, 0.78, and 0.69, respectively, and their mean relative errors are 34.08, 30.08, and 40.71%.

  • In this study, a methodology for the hourly prediction of rainfall surfaces was applied to the Pyungchang river basin at the upstream of South Han river with meteorological radar and ground rainfall data. The methods for the exclusion of abnormal echoes, and suppression of ground clutter, and the augmentation of attenuation effects associated with rainfall phenomena were reviewed, and the relationship between radar reflectivity (Z) and rainfall rate (R) was analyzed. The transformation of augmented radar reflectivities into the rdar rainfall surfaces was carried out, and afterward they were synthesized with the ground rainfall data generating the hourly rainfall surfaces. For the prediction of hourly rainfall surface, the moving factors of rainfall field estimated by the cross correlation coefficient method and the temporal variation of radar rainfall intensities were considered. The synthesized hourly rainfall surfaces were used to predict the hourly rainfall surfaces up to 3 hours in advance and subsequently the results were compared with the measured and the synthesized. It seems that the prediction method need to be verified with more data and be complemented further to consider the physical characteristics of rainfall field and the topography of the basin.

  • The radar reflectivity is significantly affected by ground clutter, beam blockage, anomalous propagation (AP), birds, insects, chaff, etc. The quality of radar reflectivity is very important in quantitative precipitation estimation. Therefore, Weather Radar Center (WRC) of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) employed two quality control algorithms: 1) Open Radar Product Generator (ORPG) and 2) fuzzy quality control algorithm to improve quality of radar reflectivity. In this study, an occurrence of AP echoes and the performance of both quality control algorithms are investigated. Consequently, AP echoes frequently occur during the spring and fall seasons. Moreover, while the ORPG QC algorithm has the merit of removing non-precipitation echoes, such as AP echoes, it also removes weak rain echoes and snow echoes. In contrast, the fuzzy QC algorithm has the advantage of preserving snow echoes and weak rain echoes, but it eliminates the partial area of the contaminated echo, including the AP echoes.

  • In order to develop an active safety system which avoids or mitigates collisions with preceding vehicles such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), accurate state estimation of the nearby vehicles is very important. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed using 3 dynamic models to better estimate the state of a vehicle which has various dynamic patterns in both longitudinal and lateral direction. In particular, the proposed algorithm is based on the Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) method which employs three different dynamic models, in cruise mode, lateral maneuver mode and longitudinal maneuver mode. In addition, a Probabilistic Data Association Filter (PDAF) is utilized as a data association algorithm which can improve the reliability of the measurement under a clutter environment. In order to verify the performance of the proposed method, it is simulated in comparison with a Kalman filter method which employs a single dynamic model. Finally, the proposed method is validated using radar data obtained from the field test in the proving ground.

  • A weather radar extracts the weather information from the return echoes which consist of scattered electromagnetic wave signals from rain, cloud and dust particles, etc. The acquisition of accurate weather information depends on the operation environment which include the Doppler weather signal and ground clutter characteristics. Since the conventional symmetric weather Doppler model does not represent the measurements in real situations, the improved model is suggested to describe the skewness in the Doppler spectrum model. Using the suggested model, many various weather signals can be simulated to verify the accuracy of signal processing algorithms and the reliability of the extracted weather information

  • Radar rainfall estimates have been widely used in calculating rainfall amount approximately and predicting flood risks. The radar rainfall estimates have a number of error sources such as beam blockage and ground clutter hinder their applications to hydrological flood forecasting. Moreover, it has been reported in paper that those errors are inter-correlated spatially and temporally. Therefore, in the current study, we tested influence about spatio-temporal errors in radar rainfall estimates. Spatio-temporal errors were simulated through a stochastic simulation model, called Multivariate Autoregressive (MAR). For runoff simulation, the Nam River basin in South Korea was used with the distributed rainfall-runoff model, Vflo. The results indicated that spatio-temporal dependent errors caused much higher variations in peak discharge than spatial dependent errors. To further investigate the effect of the magnitude of time correlation among radar errors, different magnitudes of temporal correlations were employed during the rainfall-runoff simulation. The results indicated that strong correlation caused a higher variation in peak discharge. This concluded that the effects on reducing temporal and spatial correlation must be taken in addition to correcting the biases in radar rainfall estimates. • This paper presents that the comparison results of AT (Active Transponder) positions obtained from different measurements: the result of GPS device and evaluated position from the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) image, and active transponders can be useful as GCPs(Ground Control Points) in SAR images. The X-band AT are installed on the wide-and-flat area to improve SCR(signal-to-clutter ration), and activated to represent impulse response function in order to operate as one point target in SAR images. Cosmo-SkyMed operating at X-band frequency are used to provide SAR images of AT. The comparison of AT position is performed by using the result of GPS device field measurement and AT SAR images. ENVI-SARscape S/W is used to evaluate AT position in the SAR images. From the comparison, it is shown that AT are useful as GCPs for SAR images.

  • Estimations of depth, magnetic orientation, and strength of dipole moments aid discrimination between unexploded ordnance (UXO) and non-UXO using magnetic surveys. Such estimations may be hindered by geologic noise, magnetic clutter, and overlapping tails of nearby dipole fields. An improved method of inversion for anomalies of single or multiple dipoles with arbitrary polarization was developed to include intra-inversion filtering and estimation of background field gradients. Data interpolated to grids are flagged so that only nodes nearest to measurement stations are used. To apply intra-inversion filtering to such data requires a gapped filter. Moreover, for data with significant gaps in coverage, or along the edges or corners of survey areas, intra-inversion filters must be appropriately modified. To that end, edge-adaptive and gapped gradient-nulling filters have been designed and tested. Applications are shown for magnetic field data from Chongcho Lake, Sokcho, Korea and the U. S. Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

  • This paper proposes a compact K-band radar applied to a miniature proximity fuze for the active defense system. In this terrestrial environment, it is not easy to detect approaching small targets because the clutter is scattered. In addition, it is difficult to miniaturize the radar for the small proximity fuze while improving the target accuracy of the radar in such environments. To solve these difficulties, this study presents system analysis and design, antenna design, and transceiver and signal processor design of the compact K-band radar. Some test results are presented and the results are analyzed, the validity of the proposed study is examined.
