Spray cooling heat transfer was experimentally investigated for water sprays impacting on mico-fins structured surfaces in the single phase and nucleate boiling regions. The heat transfer surfaces consist of cubic fins and triangular grooved fins. The spray produced using full cone spray nozzles, and experiments were made under the test condition of $Q=4.92{\times}10^{-6}{\sim}15.83{\times}10^{-6}\;m^3/s$, $T_f=35{\sim}55^{\circ}C$. From the experimental results, it was found that cubic fins surface had the largest heat flux enhancement relative to the smooth surface.
The geometric dimension and shape of microchannels that are formed during surface texturing are widely studied for applications in flow control, and drag and friction reduction. In this research, a new method for controlling the deformation of U channels during micro-rolling-based surface texturing was developed. Since the width of the U channels is almost constant, controlling the depth is essential. A calibration procedure of initial rolling gap, and proportional-integral PI controllers and a linear interpolation have been applied simultaneously to control the depth. The PI controllers drive the position of the pre-U grooved roll as well as the rolling gap. The relationship between the channel depth and rolling gap is linearized to create a feedback signal in the depth control system. The depth of micro channels is studied on A2021 aluminum lamina surfaces. Overall, the experimental results demonstrated the feasibility of the method for controlling the depth of microchannels.
This study is focused on the comparison between the internal saturation temperature of the working fluid and the surface temperature of adiabatic zone of two-phase closed thermosyphons with various helical grooves. Distilled water, methanol and ethanol have been used as the working fluid. In the present work, a copper tube of the length of 1200mm and 14.28mm of inside diameter is used as the container of the thermosyphon. Each of the evaporator and the condenser section has a length of 550mm, while the remaining part of the thermosyphon tube is adiabatic section. A experimental study was carried out for analyzing the performances of having 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 helical grooves. A plain thermosyphon having the same inner and outer diameter as the grooved thermosyphons is also tested for the comparison. The results show that the numbers of grooves and the type of working fluids are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphons. A good agreement between the internal saturation temperature of working fluid and the surface temperature of adiabatic zone of two-phase closed thermosyphons with various helical grooves is obtained.
Most previous studies on water repellent surfaces using lasers rely on the use of pico- or femtosecond lasers. However, in industrial application, these methods have the disadvantages of high cost and low efficiency. In this study, we implement a hydrophobic surface using a high-power general-purpose diode laser. We have fabricated the microsurface using laser groove processing technology, and we present the correlation of wettability characteristics with space and width. The metal material is stainless steel (SUS 304), and the groove height during laser processing is set to $30{\mu}m$ to evaluate the wettability based on the gap and width of various grooves. Results show that the contact angle of the groove-shaped surface is increased by $40^{\circ}$ or more as compared with the surface without patterning, and the contact angle in the parallel direction is greater than that in the perpendicular direction. Results from contact angle hysteresis measurement experiments show that the groove width has a greater influence on the contact angle history than does the gap between grooves. In addition, the coating reveals that the contact angle can be increased using a chemical method and that the laser grooving process can further improve the wetting properties of the surface.
Some investigators who have tried to achieve the highly smooth surface finish using electrochemical processes have reported that high current density produced lustrous surfaces while the opposite conditions produced a passive layer and had a tendency to produce a black surface. However, processing at a low current density may produce a non-lustrous surface but the improvement of dimensional accuracy of the surface is significant. The surface with pulse process was a bit more lustrous than with continuous current but the black passive layer still could be found at grooved surface. There are two ways to achieve highly smooth surface finish. One is brushing it with a brush the other is electrochemical machining (ECM) with high current. The former method is the most common polishing practice, but not only may the surface obtained differ from operator to operator, but precision smooth surface on micro grooves are difficult to obtain. The latter one recently has been used to produce a highly smooth surface after EDM process. However, the material removal rate in ECM with high current is relatively high. Hence the original shape of the micro grooves, which was formed by electrochemical micro-machining (EMM) process, may be destroyed. In this study, an electrochemical polishing process using pulse current is adopted as a possible alternative process when micro grooves formed by EMM process should be polished. Mirror-like micro grooves with lustrous and smooth surface can be produced electrochemically with pulse current because the voltage and current used can be lower than the case of continuous current. This study will discuss the accurate control of physical and electrical conditions so as to achieve mirror-like micro grooves with lustrous and smooth surface without destroying the original shape of micro grooves.
In this paper, The optimum design of a die shape has been carried out the FEM analysis of a pilger mill process considering various factors. The pilger mill forming process consists of a pair of rotating die which has appropriate surface shape. The important design parameters of the pilger mill are the feed rate and the profile of grooved die. Optimum design procedure was performed in order to investigated effects on the forming load and the deformed shape of material depending on the die radius profile. Profile of the die surface for the optimum design were suggested with the linear, the cosine and the quadratic curve considering a physical forming process. The surface of each die was modeled using the 3DAutoCAD and the analysis of pilger forming process was performed using the LS-DYNA3D. The optimum profile of the die shape for the pilger mill was determined to the quadratic profile. Since the analysis results provide that the model of the quadratic profile gives the lowest forming load and a proper deformed shape.
Structural Dynamics Modification (SDM) is a very effective technique to improve structure's dynamic characteristics by adding or removing auxiliary structures. changing material properties and shape of structure. Among those of SDM technique, the method to change shape of structure has been mostly relied on engineer's experience and trial-and-error process which are very time consuming. In order to develop a systematic method to change structure shape, surface grooving technique is studied and successfully applied to HDD cover model. To check the effectiveness of this surface grooving technique, the grooved HDD cover design was manufactured using rapid prototyping and experimentally tested to prove the effectiveness of the grooving method as one of SDM techniques. And the modal strain energy and eigenvalue sensitivity method for choosing the initial starting point are compared.

This study investigated the use of latex-modified sand concrete reinforced with sisal fibers (LMSC) as a repair material. Notably, no prior research has explored the application of LMSC for this purpose. This paper examines the interface bond strength and the type of failure between LMSC as a repair material and the normal concrete (NC) substrate utilising four different surfaces: without surface preparation as a reference (SR), hand hammer (HA), sandblasted (SB), and grooved (GR). The bond strength was measured by bi-surface shear, splitting tensile, and pull-off strength tests at 7, 28, and 90 days. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was also performed to study the microstructure of the interface between the normal concrete substrate and the latex-modified sand concrete reinforced with sisal fibers. The results of this study indicate that LMSC has bonding strength with NC, especially for HR and SB surfaces with high roughness. Therefore, substrate NC surface roughness is essential in increasing the bonding strength and adhesion. Eventually, The LMSC has the potential to repair and rehabilitate concrete structures.
This study explores the effects of different pre-machining conditions on the deposition characteristics and mechanical properties of austenitic stainless steel samples repaired using direct energy deposition (DED). In the DED repair process, defects such as pores and cracks can occur at the interface between the substrate and deposited material. In this study, we varied the shape of the pre-machined zone for repair in order to prevent cracks from occurring at the slope surface. After repairs by the DED process, macro-scale cracks were observed in samples that had been pre-machined with elliptic and trapezoidal grooves. In addition, it was not possible to completely prevent micro-crack generation on the sloped interfaces, even in the capsule-type grooved sample. From observation of the fracture surfaces, it was found that the cracks around the inclined interface were due to a lack of fusion between the substrate and the powder material, which led to low tensile properties. The specimen with the capsule-type groove provided the highest tensile strength and elongation (respective of 46% and 571% compared to the trapezoidal grooved specimen). However, the tensile properties were degraded compared to the non-repaired specimen (as-hot rolled material). The fracture characteristics of the repaired specimens were determined by the cracks at the sloped interfaces. These cracks grew and coalesced with each other to form macro-cracks, they then coalesced with other cracks and propagated to the substrate, causing final fracture.
