  • In order to investigate the characteristics of top ring groove deposit formation in diesel engine, engine test and simulation test were performed. From component analysis of used oils sampled from actual running engines, soot content in engine oil was selected as a main parameter for evaluating oil degradation. Deposit formation is highly related to soot content in lubricating oils. And high soot content oil accelerates deposit formation even in low temperature region below 26$0^{\circ}C$. In low temperature region below 26$0^{\circ}C$, deposit formation rate is mainly affected by top ring groove temperature. However, in high temperature region above 26$0^{\circ}C$, deposit formation rate is affected by soot content as well as top ring groove temperature. Therefore, soot content as well as top ring groove temperature should be kept a certain level in order to prevent troubles due to carbon deposit formation.

  • Mircolens and microlens V-groove are realized using a novel fabrication technology based on the exposure of a resist, usually PMMA, to deep X-rays and subsequent thermal treatment and inclined deep X-ray lithography, respectively. The fabrication technology is very simple and produces microlenses and microlens V-groove with good surface roughness of several nm. The molecular weight and glass transition temperature of PMMA is reduced when it is irradiated with deep X-rays. The microlenses were produced through the effects of volume change, surface tension, and reflow during thermal treatment of irradiated PMMA. Microlenses were produced with diameters ranging from 30 to $1500\mu\textrm{m}$. The surface X-ray mask is also fabricated to realize microlens arrays on PMMA sheet with a large area. The size of the micro V-groove is fabricated in the range of 12~$60\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • In this study a general Galerkin FE lubrication analysis method for the compressible Reynolds equation in cylindrical coordinates is presented. Then, the method is applied for analyzing lubrication performances of spiral groove dry gas seals. The effects of toning and number of groove on performance indices are evaluated at low and high rotating speeds: 3,600 and 15,000 rpm. Results show that, for the primary design consideration performances such as the opening force and axial and angular stiffnesses, a negative or small coning and a large number of groove are preferred.

  • In order to improve leakage characteristic, angled-circumferential-groove pump seal is suggested. CFD analysis using FLUENT has been performed to predict leakage and determine an optimum slanted-groove angle $\alpha$ which yields the best leakage reduction. The optimum value of $\alpha$ ranges from $45^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$ and depends on the pressure difference of seal and number of grooves for the same groove geometry. The maximum leakage reduction ratio increases as increasing the pressure difference of angled-circumferential-groove pump seal with the optimum value of $\alpha$.

  • This paper presents a numerical study of casing treatments on a centrifugal compressor stage to improve stability and the surge margin. High efficiency, a high pressure ratio, and a wide operating range are required for a high performance centrifugal compressor. In the present study, a ring groove arrangement was applied to the transonic centrifugal compressor. According to the numerical analysis using a commercial code ANSYS-CFX, the unstable phenomena limiting the range of the centrifugal compressors were compared with and without a ring groove. Although the ring groove decreased the efficiency, but increased the operating range by suppressing a flow separation at the leading-edge of the impeller especially near shroud part. Newly designed ring groove arrangement improved the compressor performance and increased the operating range of the compressor.

  • The measurements of velocity vectors are made in the wake(X/d=8) of a circular cylinder with arc grooves. The experiments are conducted by changing the groove number. groove depth, Reynolds number(Re) and the angle of the first formed groove. We know that the optimum groove angle is 70 degree and the wake velocity profiles are improved at a few conditions. According to vortex shedding frequency distributions. the key solutions to vary the flow field behind the circular cylinder are 70 degree groove angle and more deeper grooves than 0.2mm depth.

  • This study deals with the heat transfer analysis on phase change optical disc with land/groove recording by means of numerical method. Finite difference time domain(FDTD) method was used to obtain the amount of absorption of light propagating inside disc and finite difference element(FEM) method was used to calculate the temperature distribution. The calculated results present the detailed information of recording characteristics on the phase change optical disc. The temperature profiles are quite different between the land track and the groove track. The recorded mark shape on land track is smaller and more elliptic than that on groove track. It is shown that the thermal problem to the neighboring track takes place due to secondary peaks. It is found that the different write strategy should be applied to land and groove recording, respectively.

  • Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements have been carried out to investigate the pulsatile flow characteristics in a triangular grooved channel. The results showed that a vortex was generated at the tip of the groove and flowed into the groove rotating inside during the acceleration phase of the main stream promoting the mixing of the fluid. Then, at the deceleration phase of the main stream, the vortex entrained fluid from the relatively slow moving main stream to grow bigger than the groove size. Finally the vortex was ejected to the main stream carrying the fluid away from the groove, resulting in the enhancement of mixing between the stagnant fluid in the groove and the main stream in the channel. It was found that the fluid mixing enhancement is maximized when the pulsatile period is the same as the time duration which the vortex takes to grow larger enough to fill the groove and to be ejected to the main stream.

  • A technique has been proposed for fabricating a submicron channel vertical V-groove JFET using standard photolithography. A finite element numerical simulation of the V-groove JFET operation was performed using a FORTRAN progrma run on a Cyber-174 computer. The numerical simulation predicts pentode like common source output characteristics for the p$^{+}$n Vertical V-groove JFET with maximum transconductance representing approximately 6 precent of the zero bias drain conductance value and markedly high drain conductance at large drain voltages. An increase in the acceptor concentration of the V-groove JFET gate was observed to cause a significant increase in the transconductance of the device. Therefore, as above mentioned, this paper is study on the analysis of a Vertical V-groove Junction Field Effect Transistor with Finite Element Method.d.

  • This paper presents an optimum design of herringbone grooved journal bearing for spindle motor of hard disk drive (HDD) system. In addition to the conventional “rectangular” groove, various groove profiles are designed. The stiffness and damping coefficients of the oil film and frictional torque are calculated and compared for tile various groove profiles. The “circular”, “valley”, and “reversed saw tooth” grooves do not produce high direct stiffness, since they partly increase the groove depths in the direction of lubricant flow, causing to reduce the pumping action of the bearing. The maximum direct stiffness can be obtained by the “rectangular”, “saw tooth”, and “step” grooves. With the same cross sectional area of the grooves, these three grooves have the same maximum stiffness, damping coefficients, and frictional torque. Among these recommendable grooves, the saw tooth groove may keep its original profile for long, enduring metal-to-metal contact during startup and shutdown.
