This study has been focused on application of ELID mirror-surface grinding technology for manufacturing single crystal optic sapphire. Single crystal sapphire is a superior material with optic properties of high performance as light transmission, thermal conductivity, hardness and so on. Mirror-surface machining technology is necessary to use sapphire as optic parts. The ELID grinding system has been set up for machining of the sapphire material. According to the ELID experimental results, it shows that the surface of sapphire can be eliminated by metal bonded wheel with micron abrasives and the surface roughness of 60nmRa can be gotten using grinding wheel of 2,000 mesh in 4.5um, depth of cut. In this study, the chemical experiments after ELID grinding also has been conducted to check chemical reaction between workpiece and grinding wheel on ELID grinding process. It shows that the chemical reaction has not happened as the results of the chemical experiments.
The mirror surface grinding of carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) was realized by using the metal bonded super-abrasive micro grain wheel with electrolytic in-process dressing(ELID). The maximum surface roughness $R_{max}$ of CFRP which was obtained with #6,000 wheel, was 0.65 $\mu{m}$, which was rougher surface finish compared to those of hard and brittle materials with the same mesh number wheel with ELID. The grinding performance was much dependent on the grinding direction and the best surface roughness was obtained at $90^{\circ}C$ grinding with fiber direction. The spark-out effect on the surface improvement was significant when smaller mesh number grinding wheels were used. From the surface observations of CFRP with scanning electron microscope(SEM) and Auger electron spectroscopy(AES), it was found that the mirror surface grinding of CFRP was generated by the homogenization due to carbonization of the ground surface and smearing of chips composed of the carbon fiber and carbonized epoxy resin into the ground surface.
This paper reports some experimental results on the machining performance of ground & non-ground milling inserts. Five kinds of milling inserts were manufactured without grinding process and one milling insert was manufactured with grinding process. Machining experiments were carried out to compare the performance of ground & non-ground inserts. This experimental result indicate that tool wear, cutting force and surface roughness of the each tool. From the result five milling inserts that have non-grinding process and one milling insret that have grinding process compared appear.
The high precision spindle is essential fer mass and low cost production of aspherical glass lens. Especially, in the grinding process of micro glass lens the performance of the spindle determine the machined surface quality. For the aspheric micro glass lens grinding, we design and make a high precision spindle. We use air bearings for high speed and low motion errors of the spindle. And the driving mechanism is an air turbine to remove heat generation. In this study, we make basic performance requirements of the spindle through benchmarking. And we confirm the requirements by basic machining test. We test air consumption, static stiffness, run-out and vibration of the spindle.

This paper describes ultrasonically assisted grinding used to obtain a glossy surface quickly and precisely. High-quality surfaces are required for plastic injection molding dies used in the production of plastic parts such as dials for cellular phones. Traditionally, in order to finish the dies, manual polishing by a skilled worker has been required after the machining processes, such as electro discharge machining (EDM), which leaves an affected layer, and milling, which leaves tooling marks. However, manual polishing causes detrimental geometrical deviations of the die and consumes several days to finish a die surface. Therefore, a machining process for finishing dies without manual polishing to improve the surface roughness and form accuracy would be extremely valuable. In this study, a 3D positioning machine equipped with an ultrasonic spindle was used to conduct grinding experiments. An electroplated diamond tool was used for these experiments. Generally, diamond tools cannot grind steel because of excessive wear as a result of carbon atoms diffusing into bulk steel and chips. However, ultrasonically assisted grinding can achieve a fine surface (roughness Rz of $0.4{\mu}m$) on die steel without severe tool wear. The final aim of this study is to realize mirror surface grinding for injection molding dies without manual polishing. To do this, it is necessary to fabricate an electroplated diamond tool with high form accuracy and low run-out. This paper describes a tool-making method for high precision grinding and the grinding performance of a self-electroplated tool. The ground surface textures, tool performance and tool life were investigated A ground surface roughness Rz of 0.14 um was achieved Our results show that the spindle speed, feed rate and cross feed affected the surface texture. One tool could finish $5000mm^2$ of die steel surface without any deterioration of the ground surface roughness.
In this study, experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of grinding and wear process of diamond wheel grinding ceramic materials. Normal component of grinding resistance of $AI_2O_3$ was less then that of $Si_3N_4$ and $ZrO_2$. It is because the resistance for grain shedding is less then that for layer formation. For the case of $Si_3N_4$ and $ZrO_2$, as the grain mesh number of wheel increases, the surface roughness decreases. For the case of $AI_2O_3$, the surface roughness does not decreases. For the case of $Si_3N_4$ and $ZrO_2$, grinding is carried out by abrasive wear processes. For the case of $AI_2O_3$, grinding is carried out by grain shedding process.
In this study an experimental investigation was conducted to find the grinding characteristics of ceramics, STD11 and STS304 materials. The grinding force and the microscopic observation of the workpieces were obtained in surface grinding. Grinding characteristics of ceramics were inspected through the microscopic examination the cutting force, and the surface roughness. It has been found that the finding force of ceramics is relatively low as compared to that of steels and that CBN wheel has an excellent performance. The surface roughness was measured according to the feedrate and the depth of out.
For the net shape manufacturing, grinding is a important process that influences directly the accuracy and the integrity of products. We studied and researched the grinding force, surface roughness, and grinding wheel durability, according to the change of a feed speed of the table and a depth of the cut step by step with experiment that it is used to WA wheel. Workpiece materials were used STDII. The purpose of this study proposes the basic data for design of the machine tool and for controlling the machining parameters to obtain optimum performance of plunge grinding system during operation.
Fiber optic connector, ferrule, is a device to connect and align fiber optics cable on fiber-optic communication system. In general $ZrO_2$ ceramic ferrule is manufactured by grinding process because the demands precision is very high. For the precision grinding machining, it is very important that structure of co-axial ferrule grinding system is optimized. In this paper, Structural analysis was performed to analyze bed and frame structure of co-axial grinding machine. Deformation and modal analysis for natural frequency was performed using ANSYS design space program to analyze structural characteristics. New improved model of bed and frame structure was proposed based on initial basic model. Therefore, we estimated the structural characteristics precision co-axial grinding machining system.
