In this study, a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis system has been developed in order to evaluate the turbine cascade performance with blade structural deformation effect. Relative movement of the rotor with respect to stator is reflected by modeling independent two computational domains. To consider the deformed position of rotor airfoil, dynamic moving grid method is applied. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with one equation Spalart-Allmaras and two-equation SST $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence models are solved to predict unsteady fluid dynamic loads. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method with high artificial damping is used to compute the fluid-structure interaction problem. Cascade performance evaluations for different elastic axis positions are presented and compared each other. It is importantly shown that the predicted aerodynamic performance considering structural deformation effect of blade can show some deviations compared to the data generally computed from rigid blade configurations and the position of elastic axis also tend to give sensitive effect.

In this study, a fluid/structure coupled analysis system for simulating complex flow-induced vibration (FIV) phenomenon of cascades has been developed. The flow is modeled using Euler and Wavier-Stokes equations with different turbulent models. The fluid domains are modeled using the unstructured grid system with dynamic deformations due to the motion of structural boundary. The Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) and the SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulent models are used to predict the transonic turbulent flows. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used in order to solve the coupled governing equations for viscous flow-induced vibration phenomena. For the purpose of validation for the developed FIV analysis system, comparison results for computational analyses of steady and unsteady aerodynamics and flutter analyses are presented in the transonic flow region. In addition, flow-induced vibration analyses for the isolated cascade and multi-blades cascade models have been conducted to show the physical fluid-structure interaction effects in the time domain.

The integration of photovoltaic (PV) energy sources into DC grid has gained considerable attention because of its enhanced conversion efficiency with reduced number of power conversion stages. During the integration process, a local control unit is normally included with every power conversion stage of the PV source to accomplish the process of maximum power point tracking. A centralized monitoring and supervisory control unit is required for monitoring, power management, and protection of the entire system. Therefore, we propose a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based centralized control unit that integrates all local controllers with the centralized monitoring unit. The main focus of this study is on the process of integrating many local control units into a single central unit. In this paper, we present design and optimization procedures for the hardware implementation of FPGA architecture. Furthermore, we propose a transient analysis and control design methodology with consideration of the nonlinear characteristics of the PV source. Hardware experiment results verify the efficiency of the central control unit and controller design.

Most diagnosis approaches rely on historical failure data that might not be feasible in real operating conditions because the battery voltage and internal parameters are nonlinear according to various operating conditions, such as cell-to-cell configuration and initial condition. To overcome this issue, the estimator and the predictor require integrated approaches that consider comprehensive data, with the degradation process and measured data taken into account. In this paper, vector autoregressive models (VAR) with various parameters that affect overdischarge to the cell in the battery pack were constructed, and the cell-to-cell parameters were identified using an adaptive model to analyze the influence of failure prognosis. The theoretical analysis is validated using experimental results in terms of the feasibility and advantages of fault prognosis.
Nowadays every technology is becoming smarter. Consequently, intensive use of ICT in the whole industries and cities enables a sustainable approach to meet enormous productivity, efficiency, transparency and conservation of natural recourses. Likewise, the role of ICT in terms of controlling, monitoring in the energy industry allows integrating potential renewables, bulk energy conservation and reliable optimized operation in the entire system. In this paper outlines challenging issues in renewable energy integration in Mongolia and proposes potential recommendations and conclusions. The author investigated the main technologies used in energy industry mainly smart grid, challenges and policy aspect in Mongolian energy sector by using the primary and secondary approach with case studies and literature based methodologies. Based on the policy aspect and current implementation of smart grid, the paper tries to address the readiness for the main application and future potential ICT driven applications. Furthermore, it concluded that ICT convergence is demanded to overcome the current vulnerabilities and significant momentum to leave behind by using its potential energy recourses and favorable geographical state. Policymakers may find this study useful, as it answers the question of whether ICT investment can ultimately reduce energy consumption and may aid in future planning. Even tough, in order to develop a smart grid and integrating renewables firstly set an appropriate market structure, ICT will key enabler to make energy system more profitable and sustainable. Regarding the result of this study, ICT deployment contribution is a huge demand for future opportunities energy in Mongolia.
KEPCO was operating power plants with diesel generators in 49 islands including Baekryeong-Do, and the generation capacity was about 66 MW in 2008. The cost of fuel is increasing by the international oil price inflation and continuous rise of oil price is predicted. For the stabilizing of electric power supply to the separate islands, renewable energy and fuel cell systems were considered. Hydrogen is made using renewable energy such as wind power and solar energy, and then a fuel cell system generates electricity with the stored hydrogen. Though the system efficiency is low, it is treated as the only way to secure the stable electric supply using renewable energy at this present. The analytic hierarchy process was used to select suitable candidate island for the system installation and 5 islands including Ulleung-Do were selected. Economic evaluation for the system composed of a kerosene generator, a wind power, an electrolysis, and a fuel cell system was conducted with levelized generation cost based on present value methode. As the result, the necessity of renewable energy combined generation system and micro grid composition in the candidated islands was confirmed. Henceforth, the development of an integration technology which connects micro grid to the total power grid will be needed.

Kinetic energy conservation for fixed and moving grids is examined in time-accurate finite element computation of fully unsteady inviscid flows. As numerical algorithms, fractional step method (FSM) and modified SIMPLE are used. To simulate the flow in moving grid system, arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method is adopted. In the present study, the energy conserving time integration rule for finite element algorithm is proposed and discussed schematically. It is shown that the discretization by Crank-Nicolson in time and Galerkin (central difference) in space must be used to ensure energy conservation. The developed code has been tested for a standing vortex in fixed or moving grid system, sloshing in a tank and propagation of a solitary wave, and has been shown to be a completely energy conserving algorithm.
This paper reviews the concept of tensegrity structures and proposes a new type of dismountable steel tensegrity grids for possible deployment as light-weight roof structures. It covers the fabrication of the prototype structures followed by their instrumentation, destructive testing and numerical analysis. First, a single module, measuring $1m{\times}1m$ in size, is fabricated based on half-cuboctahedron configuration using galvanised iron (GI) pipes as struts and high tensile stranded cables as tensile elements. Detailed instrumentation of the structure is carried out right at the fabrication stage. The structure is thereafter subjected to destructive test during which the strain and the displacement responses are carefully monitored. The structure is modelled and analyzed using finite element method (FEM) and the model generated is updated with the experimental results. The investigations are then extended to a $2{\times}2$ grid, measuring $2m{\times}2m$ in size, fabricated uniquely by the cohesive integration of four single tensegrity modules. After updating and validating on the $2{\times}2$ grid, the finite element model is extended to a $8{\times}8$ grid (consisting of 64 units and measuring $8m{\times}8m$) whose behaviour is studied in detail for various load combinations expected to act on the structure. The results demonstrate that the proposed tensegrity grid structures are not only dismountable but also exhibit satisfactory behaviour from strength and serviceability point of view.

In this study, the added resistance of ships in short waves is systematically studied by using two different numerical methods - Rankine panel method and Cartesian grid method – and existing asymptotic and empirical formulae. Analysis of added resistance in short waves has been preconceived as a shortcoming of numerical computation. This study aims to observe such preconception by comparing the computational results, particularly based on two representative three-dimensional methods, and with the existing formulae and experimental data. In the Rankine panel method, a near-field method based on direct pressure integration is adopted. In the Cartesian grid method, the wave-body interaction problem is considered as a multiphase problem, and volume fraction functions are defined in order to identify each phase in a Cartesian grid. The computational results of added resistance in short waves using the two methods are systematically compared with experimental data for several ship models, including S175 containership, KVLCC2 and Series 60 hulls (CB = 0.7, 0.8). The present study includes the comparison with the established asymptotic and empirical formulae in short waves.
