  • Although various statistical methods have been developed to map time-dependent genetic factors, most identified genetic variants can explain only a small portion of the estimated genetic variation in longitudinal traits. Gene-gene and gene-time/environment interactions are known to be important putative sources of the missing heritability. However, mapping epistatic gene-gene interactions is extremely difficult due to the very large parameter spaces for models containing such interactions. In this paper, we develop a Gaussian process (GP) based nonparametric Bayesian variable selection method for longitudinal data. It maps multiple genetic markers without restricting to pairwise interactions. Rather than modeling each main and interaction term explicitly, the GP model measures the importance of each marker, regardless of whether it is mostly due to a main effect or some interaction effect(s), via an unspecified function. To improve the flexibility of the GP model, we propose a novel grid-based method for the within-subject dependence structure. The proposed method can accurately approximate complex covariance structures. The dimension of the covariance matrix depends only on the number of fixed grid points although each subject may have different numbers of measurements at different time points. The deviance information criterion (DIC) and the Bayesian predictive information criterion (BPIC) are proposed for selecting an optimal number of grid points. To efficiently draw posterior samples, we combine a hybrid Monte Carlo method with a partially collapsed Gibbs (PCG) sampler. We apply the proposed GP model to a mouse dataset on age-related body weight.

  • In this paper a hybrid grid generation program for general 2-D region is introduced. The program is developed by using JAVA programming language, and it can be used either as an application program on a local computer or as an applet in the network environment. The hybrid grid system for a 2-D problem means a combination of triangular cells and quadrilateral cells, and it can offer both of the high flexibility of triangular cells and the high accuracy and efficiency of structured-type quadrilateral cells. To accommodate a quadrilateral-cell region and a triangular-cell region into one computational domain, it is importance to take good care of the interface between two different regions so that overall good grid quality can be maintained. In this research advancing layer method(ALM) augmented by elliptic smoothing method is used for the quadrilateral-cell region and advancing front method(AFM) is used for the triangular-cell region. A special treatment technique for the interface between those two regions is also developed. The interface treatment technique is basically to prevent the propagation of small cell size due to ALM method into the triangular region and maintain the smooth transition of cell-size scale between two different regions. By applying current technique high-quality hybrid grids for general 2-D regions can be easily generated, and typical grid generation results and flow solutions are demonstrated.

  • The Grid system is an emerging computing infrastructure that will substitute for existing distributed systems. However end users have a difficulty in using the Grid because of its complicated usage, which is an inherent characteristic from the heterogeneous mechanism of the Grid. In this paper, we present the JCML(Job Control Markup Language) and its GUI-based editor, which not only provide users with ease of use, improved working environment, but assist users to execute their jobs efficiently The JCML is a job control language that improves the RSL of Globus, which defines global services in Grid. The JCML is designed to support flexibility among various Grid services using standard XML. And it makes use of a graph representation method, GXL(Graph eXchange Language), to specify detailed job properties and dependencies among jobs using nodes and edges. The JCML editor provides users with GUI-based interface. With the JCML editor, a complicated job order can be easily completed using very simple manipulations with a mouse, such as a drag-and-drop.

  • The concrete wall is the most useful of retaining structure which can obtain the engineering stability, but has problems that is not friendly with nature environment in a fine view, such as poor rear drainage, and shrinkage crack by temperature difference, etc. Because of this problems, the research for a segmental crib retaining wall has been performed. A segmental crib retaining wall is quickly and easily erected because is possible to be erected as the individual members, and is not sensitive to differential settlement and earthquakes. Also, it shows effective drainage and has a friendly advantage with nature environment because of being able to be planted with vines and shrubs in retaining walls The design of crib retaining walls has traditionally been based on classical soil mechanics theories. These theories, originally derived by Rankine(1857) and Coulomb(1776), assume that the wall acts as a rigid body. This assumption results in failure being predicted by either monolithic overturning or base sliding mechanisms. However, the wall consists of individual members which have been created a three dimensional grid. This grid confines an fill mass which becomes part of the wall. The filled wall resists the earth pressure with the same mechanism of classical gravity walls. Because of the flexibility of the individual segment, it allows relative movement between the individual members within the wall. The three dimensional flexible grid leads to stress redistribution when the wall is subjected to external or fill loads. Due to the flexibility and the stress redistribution, the failure of segmental crib wall consists of not only overturing and base sliding but the local deformation and the failure between the segmental members. It has been researched in the field that due to this flexibility and load redistribution, serviceability failure of segmental crib walls is unlikely to be due to overturning or base sliding. Therefore, in this study, the relative displacement appearance of retaining wall due to variation of inclination is measured to examine this behavior characteristics. Also, the behavior characteristics of retaining walls by surcharge load, and location of acting point of retaining wall rear, and the displacement characteristics and deflections are estimated about the existence and nonexistence of Rear Stretcher performing an role in transmitting earth pressure of Header and Stretcher organizing retaining walls. This research focuses on the characteristics due to the behavior of retaining walls. This research focuses on the characteristics due to the behavior of retaining walls.

  • Automation of wood processing is strongly required to improve the productivity and quality of wood products in wood industry which is one of the most labor-intensive industries. Classification of surface defects on wood boards such as knots is one of the important steps towards a completely automated wood processing system. In this study the possibility of detection of knots by image processing technique was investigated. Algorithm for the automatic determination of threshold value was developed to enhance the flexibility of image processing system. Two different approaches, grid method and tile method, were developed to enhance the speed in extracting features from images. Grid method showed slightly higher processing speed and tile method proved much more stable in determining threshold values. Tile size of $5{\times}5$ pixels or $6{\times}6$ pixels was found to be proper to get stable results with resonable processing time.

  • Recently, flexibility is one of the hottest issues in the field of electronic devices. For flexible displays or solar cells, a development of transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) with flexibility, bendability and foldability is an essential element. Hundreds of nanometers indium-tin-oxide (ITO) films have been widely used and commercialized as a transparent electrode, but their brittleness make them difficulty to apply flexible electronics. Many researchers have been studying for flexible TCEs such as a few layers of graphene sheets, carbon nanotube networks, conductive polymer films and combinations among them. Although gained flexibility, their transmittance and resistivity have not reached those of commercialized ITO films. Metal grids electrode cannot act as TCEs only, but they can be used to lower the resistance of TCEs with few losses of transmittance. However, the possibility of device shortage will be rise at the devices with metal grids because a surface flatness of TCEs may be deteriorated when metal grids are introduced using conventional methods. In our research, we have developed hybrid TCEs, which combined tens of nanometers ITO film and metal grids which are embedded in flexible substrate. They show $13{\Omega}$/${\Box}f$ sheet resistance with 94% of transmittance. Moreover, the sheet resistance was maintained up to 1 mm of bending radius. Also, we have verified that flexible organic light emitting diodes and organic solar cells with the TCEs showed similar performances compared to commercial ITO (on glass substrate) devices.

  • In this paper, we present a scheme for developing a simulator which verify the AGV system operation in automated container terminal. First of all, we propose a guide path in automated terminal considering AGV productivity and present a traffic control scheme in a such guide path. Generally, the AGV system can be controlled by zone control scheme, but there are no flexibility and use simple operation. In this paper, we propose and use grid based control scheme to improve the flexibility of the AGV movement. Lastly, we construct the simulation environment which can do similar to that of real task and ease the modification and improvement of the control logics.
