  • The spacer grid is one of the main structural components in fuel assembly, which supports the fuel rods, guides cooling water, and protects the fuel assembly from the external impact load such as earthquakes. The nonlinear dynamic impact analysis is conducted by using the finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. Boundary condition for dynamic analysis is well applied to the test condition. Simulation results also similarly predict the local buckling phenomena. In addition to the buckling parameter, the local buckling cause is examined by both simulation and test method. It is found to correspond well with the test results. Impact tests are also carried out for some specimens of the spacer grid in order to compare the results between the test and the simulation. This test is accomplished by a free fall dummy weight onto the specimen. From this test, only the uppermost and lowermost layers of the multi-cell are buckled, which implies the local buckling at the weakest point of the grid structure.

  • Synchronous generators and induction generators are mainly used in hydroelectric power generation. Synchronous generator is mainly applied to large hydroelectric plants but induction generator is applied to the small hydro power plants. Stability of induction generator is slightly less than the synchronous generator. However, induction generator has many advantages rather than a synchronous generator in terms of price and maintenance. So Induction generator is used primarily in small hydroelectric power station less than 1,000kW recently. Squirrel cage induction generator generates a high inrush current at the grid-connection. This high inrush current causes a voltage drop on the grid. In order to reduce the voltage drop and to analyze the power flow, the analysis for operating characteristics of the induction generator should be reviewed in advance. In this study, we analyzed the voltage drop and power flow analysis when a 1500kW induction generator is connected to the grid. The voltage drop is slightly higher than the acceptable range of distributed power supply voltage and the power flow of the generator is performed well.

  • Recently, the research that analyze topography parameters that need in hydrology analysis using GIS techniques is achieved. DEM that is used in topography analysis can be constructed effectively using contour data of digital map. Therefore, DEM's applicability is increasing gradually in several fields. In this study, DEM of 20∼l00m grid size was applied PYONGCHANG river and JUBANG river basin to analyze what effect DEM grid size causes about slope and drainage watershed at topography parameter extraction. This study drew a regression equation about slope change by DEM grid size. As a result, according as DEM grid size increases, slope decreases, and basin area could know that is not change almost.

  • The margin of transient stability of a weak grid system is very low because of the small short-circuit ratio and large impedance. If the fault of the weak grid is cleared by the protection system, one of the major lines is disconnected after the fault is cleared. This further reduces the system strength. Therefore, it is necessary that a new generation system be added to the weak grid to enhance the transient stability margin. A conventional synchronous generator and wind turbine generator were added to a base grid system. The results of transient stability analysis with additional generators using PSSE were compared. The simulations showed that wind turbine generators provide good damping performance and enhance the transient stability margin based on CCT up to 5 times.

  • Hydrologic-topographical parameters were extracted using GIS. The use of GIS is more effective and exact than the execution by person. And the purpose of this paper is to extract more efficient size of grid for DEM analysis by applying GIS technology. As a result, when the grid size is less than $100m{\times}100m$ the trend of extracted parameters is similar but when the grid size is over $100m{\times}100m$ the trend of extraction parameters is dispersive. Therefore, it is appropriate to extract hydrologic-topographical parameters the grid size of $100m{\times}100m$ in DEM analysis.

  • Smart grid is a network of computers and power infrastructure that monitor and manage energy usage efficiently. Recently, the smart grid demonstration projects around the world, including the United States, Europe, Japan, and the technology being developed. The protection of the many components of the grid against cyber-threats has always been critical, but the recent Smart grid has been threatened by a variety of cyber and physical attacks. We model and analyze advanced metering infrastructure(AMI) in smart grid. Using attack countermeasure tree(ACT) we show qualitative and probabilistic security analysis of AMI. We implement using SHARPE(Symbolic Hierarchical Automated Reliability and Performance Evaluator) tool and calculate probability, ROA, ROI, Structure Importance, Birnbaum Importance.

  • A multiphase CFD analysis is performed to investigate the effect of near-wall grid for simulating a subcooled boiling flow in vertical tube. The multiphase flow model used in this CFD analysis is the two-fluid model in which liquid(water) and vapor(steam) are considered as continuous and dispersed fluids, respectively. A wall boiling model is also used to simulate the subcooled boiling heat transfer at the heated wall boundary. The diameter and heated length of tube are 0.0154 m and 2 m, respectively. The system pressure in tube is 4.5 MPa and the inlet subcooling is 60 K. The near-wall grid size in the non-dimensional wall unit ($y_{w}^{+}$) was examined from 64 to 172 at the outlet boundary. The CFD calculations predicted the void distributions as well as the liquid and wall temperatures in tube. The predicted axial variations of the void fraction and the wall temperature are compared with the measured ones. The CFD prediction of the wall temperature is shown to slightly depend on the near-wall grid size but the axial void prediction has somewhat large dependency. The CFD prediction was found to show a better agreement with the measured one for the large near-wall grid, e.g., $y_{w}^{+}$ > 100.

  • This paper presents a numerical analysis on the solidification characteristics in twin-roll strip casting. Unstructured fixed-grid system was employed to deal with phase change. Melting of pure gallium was analyzed to confirm the validity of present program in both structured and unstructured grid systems. An algorithm for simultaneous calculation of the temperature in the roll and the molten metal pool was developed. The flow field in the pool and heat transfer features between pool and roll were shown. The effect of process parameters was also studied. Since the geometry of the molten metal Pool significantly deforms along the casting direction, unstructured grid system is more efficient. The unstructured grid system gives almost the same accuracy, even though the number of grids is only 60% of the structure done.

  • As power grids are integrated into one big umbrella (i.e., Smart Grid), communication network plays a key role in reliable and stable operation of power grids. For successful operation of smart grid, interoperability and security issues must be resolved. Security means providing network system integrity, authentication, and confidentiality service. For a cyber-attack to a power grid system, which may jeopardize the national security, vulnerability of communication infrastructure has a serious impact on the power grid network. While security aspects of power grid network have been studied much, security mechanisms are rarely adopted in power gird communication network. For security issues, strict timing requirements are defined in IEC 61850 for mission critical messages (i.e., GOOSE). In this paper, we apply security algorithms (i.e., MD-5, SHA-1, and RSA) and measure their processing time and transmission delay of secured mission critical messages. The results show the algorithms satisfying the timing requirements defined in IEC 61850 and we observer the algorithm that is optimal for secure communication of mission critical messages. Numerical analysis shows that SHA-1 is preferable for secure GOOSE message sending.

  • The topography is recognized as an important factor in determining the streamflow response of watershed to precipitation. In watershed analysis, stream networks are very important parameters. Each DEM grid size and flowaccumulation threshold value of drainage accumulation matrix have influence on stream networks extracted by using grid DEM. Therefore, stream networks extracted from DEM varies with each DEM grid size and flowaccumulation threshold value. Generally, small threshold values will generate more detailed stream network with higher drainage density High threshold values will generate coarser stream networks. In this paper, total stream length in the study area was used to calculate the flowaccumulation threshold value by each DEM grid size. Stream network was derived by each DEM grid size, which is applied flowaccumulation threshold value. Regression equation was derived by correlation between flowaccumulation threshold value and each DEM grid size.
