  • The Seoul Housing Corporation pronounced an alternative design competition and a bidding for Eunpyeong New Town in December of 2004. At first many construction companies were interested in the first New Town Project. But at last a few companies had proposed the alternative design and construction cost. This project needed a conjunction of design ideas and technology know-hows. And the client wanted the brand power of construction company. Ultimately the Corporation hoped that the first New Town Project will end up with high quality successfully. This competition had started with the original construction drawings. Then it needed some alternative ideas and the lowest cost. There were two drawings of non changeable part and changeable part. Non changeable parts are structure like housing unit plan, underground parking lots. Changeable parts are outdoor layout, interior design and building facade. So we tried all ideas of landscape technology and design principles within limited guidelines. The author applied new technology like tilted rooftop greening and sustained container greening on high-rise apartment house. This green technology will be the first trial in Seoul and in the world as well. Daewoo Corporation have accumulated greening technology through the researches by national funding since 2002. Through this New Town Project the green technology will go forward step by step.

  • In order to discern the development of technology in creating, properly managing, and characterizing the types used in facade greening, this article examines the instances of facade greening of Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey which is not only located in the latitude similar to South Korea's but also influenced by the both continental and oceanic climate. The study was carried out for 11 months from October 2002 to September 2003. The total 242 places were researched and they were 83 sites in Athens, 77 sites in Istanbul, and 82 sites in Sofia. Varieties, usage, configuration, foundation and characteristics of plants were studied. The goals of greening, and building's surface roughness and thickness, direction of the wall were also researched. The result of survey are as follows; 17 families and 33 species of climbing plants were found in Athens, Istanbul, and Sofia. Thickness of facade greening in the three cities is 46cm in Athens, 39cm in Istanbul, and 53cm in Sofia. The possible facade greening size per a climbing plant, Parthenocissus tricupidata takes up the largest portion of the wall in the three cities similarly followed by Vitis vinifera and Wistaria spp. By its diversity it can be assumed that these plants are most practical for large scale of facade greening and full covering. Evergreen climbing plants such as Hedera helix and Ficus niponica are useful plants for relatively large scale of facade greening area. In the facade greening types, the climbing type is the most dominant in the three cities and most of the climbing type was planted on the natural foundation but the hanging and combination types were planted on an artificial foundation located on the balcony or on the roof of the building. In the directions of the walls for facade greening, the west direction are most popular which is for the improvement of sun shading in summer season. In Sofia the apartments were most applied with facade greening but In Istanbul and Athens the residential buildings and the public buildings were adapted with facade greening actively as well as residential building. The purpose of lowering summer heat took up the highest portion followed by the purpose of ornamentation and maintaining privacy in all surveyed cities.

  • It was attempted to find a method to prevent greening of crushed garlic. The storage conditions and heat treatments before crushing were tested for the prevention of greening in crushed garlic. 'Namhae' garlic (sub-tropical type), 'Seosan' and 'Danyang' garlic (traditional) type for cool area) were stored in room temperature(20${\pm}5^{\circ}C$, low temperature(0$^{\circ}C$), and CA(O$_2\;3%,\;CO_2$ 5%) storage for five months, and their samples were crushed. The crushed garlic had no significant differences in greening according to the cultivars. Greening did not occur for the crushed garlic from bulbs stored either in room temperature or CA storage. Greening was the unique symptom observed in crushed garlic from bulbs stored in low temperature. For the prevention of greening, heat treatment was conducted at 40, 35 and 30$^{\circ}C$ prior to make the crushed garlic from bulbs which were stored in low temperature. The effective duration of heat treatment before crushing was 7 days at 30$^{\circ}C$, 3 days at 35$^{\circ}C$, and 1 days at 40$^{\circ}C$ Greening was most effectively prevented in 1 day at 40$^{\circ}C$ treatment. During the heat treatments, changes in enzymatic pyruvic acid content and sprouting rate were slightly observed in garlic bulbs treated at 40$^{\circ}C$ for 1 day.

  • This study relates to measure impact of green technology on industry sector by uses of industry greening indices. For this study, we performed patent trend analysis, technology-industry concordance analysis, and designed some industry greening indices. Through the results of this research, we found out the impact of Korean high priority green technologies on respective industries, and consequently identified which industries play an important role in the era of green innovation. IT related industries would catch somewhat weak attention in green technology policy, though they manufacture and use plenty of patents at present. Meanwhile, Energy related industry, such as battery industry would catch strong attention in green innovation, showed very high value of industry greening indices. In order to design proper R&D strategy for green technologies, understanding industry and market structure that can adapt and promote green technology innovation is important. In this context, this study could be an effective and systematic tool for assisting green innovation policy. Also, these indices developed are not limited to the case of green technology, other technologies can be used universally as a input for analysis.

  • This research aimed to investigate the current trends of rooftop greening techniques of frequent use within and without Korea. It is also expected that this research will help developing new rooftop greening techniques appropriate for Korean environment. Data for this study have been collected from patent applications for rooftop greening techniques; the web sites of the Korean Intellectual Property Office as well as patent offices in Germany and Japan, where active researches on rooftop greening techniques are in progress. 168 applications within a period from the year of 1984 to December of 2004 were examined, among which Japan excelled with its 81 applications followed by Germany(54), Korea(31)and USA(2). In case of Japan, where more patent applications were found than in any other countries, applications for Plant Base(38) excelled others - System(36), Management(4) and Plant(3) in the number of applications. As for Germany, 25 cases were on Plant Base, 25 cases on System, and 4 cases on Plant; in Korea, 15 cases were on Plant Base, 11 cases on System, 3 cases on Plant and 2 cases on Management; in USA, 1 cases were on System and 1 cases on Plant. Overall, the total number of patent applications in three countries reaches 168 cases; among which Plant Base topped in all four countries, followed by 73 cases on System. Applications concerning Plant and Management totalled to 11 and 6 for each. In conclusion, most patents were concentrated on Plant Base and System while researches on Plant and Management still do not get as much attention as they deserve. Research and development of various techniques on Plant must be a precondition for the formation of diverse Bio-tops suitable for the environments of specific areas. Concrete researches on rooftop greening techniques will contribute to the improvement of urban ecosystem by developing more convenient and easily applicable techniques during the time of actual construction.

  • The chemical processes involved in the formation of green pigment in crushed garlic cloves were investigated based on the principle of pink pigmentation in macerated onions. Intact greening and non-greening garlic cloves were either left untreated or heated at $90^{\circ}C$ for 3 min to inactivate enzyme activities. First, a colorless ether soluble compound referred to as color developer reacted with glycine (among all free amino acids) in garlic to form a second compound insoluble in ether. The latter compound then reacted with formaldehyde to yield the green colored pigment. Alliinase activity was necessary for the production of color developer and for the development of green pigment. In greening garlic that had been heat treated, green pigmentation did not proceed due to the heat-inactivation of alliinase, but the addition of alliinase solution into the garlic homogenates restored the pigmentation. However, this phenomenon was not observed in non-greening garlic with or without heat treatment. Finally, the mechanism of green pigment formation in crushed garlicis similar to that of pink pigment formation in macerated onions.

  • This study was to investigate and identify the trends and the direction of the researches related to the rooftop greening by analyzing the content of the studies published in Korea during the past two decades. Internet search was to collect data for this study, and the articles reviewed are limited to research journals, theses, and doctoral dissertations. The collected articles were then examined for content analysis and classified into several categories according to year, topic, and types of journals. The results showed that the total number of articles published in Korea for the period 1984-2004 was 97. While there was only one article in 1984, the number of articles has increased to 16 in 2000, 20 in 2003, and 16 in 2004 now. According to the analysis of the 97 data, there were 25 master's theses and 3 doctoral dissertations and 69 articles published in journals. Articles about rooftop greening were published most frequently in the Korea Institute of Landscape Architecture(11 articles), followed by Journal of Architectural Institute of Korea(8 articles) and Journal of Korea Society for Environment Restoration(7 articles). The studies regarding the rooftop greening has increased in number since the Ministry of Construction and Transportation made it possible to 10-15 cm shallow depth of soil in rooftop greening in 2000, which was above 100 cm before 2000. The articles examined are classified into four areas of research according to topic. The number of articles in each area is as follows : 57 articles in the field of the technology, 17 in the study of the plan and system, 10 in the case study, and 12 in the plant study, Particularly, the studies concerning technology are subdivided into the five areas and the number of each area is as follows : 25 studies for the plant base, 15 for design plan, 13 for the efficacy of the rooftop greening, 3 for the managing program, and 1 for the relation with buildings. Over the years, the studies for the rooftop greening have increased in number since these studies have made a positive effect on the improvement of the urban ecosystem and on the environment of the city lacking greens. However, the majority of research are for plant and planting base and those researches are not enough to make some effects on the improvement of the environment, it seems necessary to provide some system applicable to the field or to design practical study in order to contribute to the urban environment in Korea.

  • The improvement of adaptation capability against heat island (ACHI) by greening buildings is considered as an important measure to cope with a climate change. This study aimed to select the most appropriate zones for green roof initiative in case study sites, Bucheon, Anyang, and Suwon Cities and to investigate the characteristics of buildings for greening to improve ACHI. Relative ACHI for each lot was estimated from 0 to -9, assuming that it decreases with the distance from green space and waterbody. Low adaptation capabilities were mostly shown in the old urban blocks with dense low-rise buildings and lack of green space. Three blocks with the lowest ACHIs were chosen as a green roof initiative zone in each city. They are largely residential areas including low-rise buildings such as single, multi-household houses, townhouses, 5 or lower story apartments and few are industrial areas crowded with small factory buildings. The areas of building roof available for greening are 8.8% within the selected zones in Bucheon City, 5.3% in Anyang City, and 4.9% in Suwon City. As it were, 25.2~41.7% of the roof top areas are available for greening in these zones. It means that roof top areas of $25,000{\sim}120,000m^2$ can be used for greening within the selected zones of $0.64{\sim}1.65km^2$ to improve ACHI. The approach and results of the study are significant to provide a logical basis and information on location, scale, effect, and target figure of greening as a measure to cope with climate change.

  • The current study aims to analyze the vegetation characteristics of the rocky slopes in expressway applied by different types of greening work. A field survey on the current status of vegetation were conducted in 50 rock slopes along 13 expressways in two years, 2020 to 2021. Specifically, the type of implemented greening and slope stabilization work, the soil properties, the vegetation coverage, and the emerged species were investigated on a every single slope. As the result of the implemented work types, the soil-media hydroseeding and the gabion work appeared to be the most implemented greening and slope stabilization work, respectively. As a result of the vegetation survey, 126 classification groups (42 families, 93 genera and 126 species) were identified in total and it was observed 26 IAP species and 5 invasive species were growing. The longer the time after greening work, the more frequent appearance of IAP species were observed. Woody species such as Robinia pseudoacacia and Lespedeza bicolo, and perennial herbs such as Artemisia princeps, Erigeron annuus, and Festuca arundinacea were appeared with high frequencies at the rocky slopes in expressway. It was also observed Pinus densiflora, Quercus dentata, Rubus crataegifolius and Miscanthus sinensis which had invaded from the adjacent forests naturally, and the largest number of species were invaded between 5~10 years usually after greening work in this study.

  • The study objective was to compare the interior greening volume ratios for the change in concentration of fine particle, temperature and relative humidity, and to identify the level of interior landscape volume ratio as a suitable condition to achieve the desired indoor properties. Plants were moved into a room (88m3) randomly. After moving, the volume ratio of the interior greening level was set at 0%, 1%, 2% and 3%. The concentration of fine particles was measured with a mini-volume portable air sampler (Air Metrics, USA). The temperature and relative humidity were recorded with a digital sensor (Kiwi-LTH, USA) during the experiment under different volume ratios with three replications. 1. The results of the change in concentration of the fine particles revealed a trend towards an increased volume ratio of interior greening with decreasing concentration of fine particles, compared to non-plants (0%). The concentration of fine particles at volume ratios of 0%, 1%, 2% and 3% was 55ug/$m^3$, 233ug/$m^3$, 40ug/$m^3$ and 30ug/$m^3$, respectively. 2. The change in temperature, at volume ratios of 0%, 1%, 2% and 3% was $21.2^{\circ}C$, $17.4^{\circ}C$, $16.7^{\circ}C$ and $18.9^{\circ}C$, respectively, in near interior greening, and $22.1^{\circ}C$, $18.7^{\circ}C$, $18.4^{\circ}C$ and $20.5^{\circ}C$ respectively, at a distance of 3m from the interior greening. These study results suggested that temperature was affected by volume ratio and distance from the interior greening. 3. The relative humidity, at volume ratios of 0%, 1%, 2% and 3% was 34.2%, 32.5%, 36.7%, and 46.9%, respectively, in near interior greening, and 31.2%, 26.9%, 31.4% and 38.3%, respectively, at a distance of 3m from the interior greening. With increasing volume ratio of interior landscape, there were positive and significant results between the distance difference and the relative humidity more than temperature.
