  • (YNdSm)-Ba-Cu-O system high Tc composite superconductors were directionally grown by zone melting process, having large temperature gradient, in air atmosphere. Cylindrical green rods of $(YNdSm)_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_x$ [(YNS)1.8]composite oxides by CIP (cold isostatic pressing) method using rubber mold were fabricated. The microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated by XRD, TEM and SQUID magnetometer. The size of nonsuperconducting $(YNdSm)_2BaCuO_5$ inclusions of the melt-textured (YNS)1.8 sample with $CeO_2$ additive were remarkably reduced and uniformly distributed within the superconducting (YNS)1.8 matrix. (YNS)1.8 samples, with / without $CeO_2$ additive, showed an onset $T_c{\geq}90K$ and sharp superconducting transition. The critical current density $J_c$ value of the (YNdSm)1.8 superconductor with $CeO_2$ additive were 840 A, $1.2{\times}104A/cm^2$ in 77 K, 0 Tesla by direct current transport method.

  • Advancements in the technology of building materials has led to diverse applications of nanomaterials with the aim to monitor concrete structures. While there are myriad instances of the use of nanoparticles in building materials, the production of smart nano cement-composites is often expensive. Thereupon, this research aims to discover a sustainable nanomaterial from tyre waste using the pyrolysis process as part of the green manufacturing circle. Here, Nano Structure Tyre-Char (NSTC) is introduced as a zero-dimension carbon-based nanoparticle. The NSTC particles were characterized using various standard characterization techniques. Several salient results for the NSTC particles were obtained using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The size of the particles as well as that of the agglomerates were reduced significantly using the milling process and the results were validated through a scanning electron microscope. The crystallite size and crystallinity were found to be ~35nm and 10.42%, respectively. The direct bandgap value of 5.93eV and good optical conductivity at 786 nm were obtained from the ultra violet visible spectroscopy measurements. The thermal analysis reveals the presence of a substantial amount of carbon, the rate of maximum weight loss, and the two stages of phase transformation. The FT-Raman confirms the presence of carboxyl groups and a ID/IG ratio of 0.83. Water contact angle around 140° on the surface implies the highly hydrophobic nature of the material and its low surface energy. This characteristic process assists to obtain a sustainable nanomaterial from waste tyres, contributing to the development of a smart building material.

  • In this paper, a single lap shear test was performed using a glass fiber reinforced composite material (GFRC). Pencil lead drawn paper sensor (PLDPS) was applied for single lap shear test being performed. Bisphenol-A epoxy and amine hardener were used as adhesives combining with composite materials. To make a difference in adhesive properties, the adhesive was cured under different conditions. PLDPS was made of a 4B pencil on A4 paper. Because graphite in a pencil was an electrically conductive substance, electric resistance (ER) could be measured. A change in ER was observed by a position where a PLDPS was attached to single lap shear specimens. It was confirmed that the change in ER was different depending on two attached positions and was observed by lap shear strain as well. In case the lap shear strain was large, the change in ER of PLDPS was high. This was because the larger the extension of the adhesive part, the larger the degree of bending of the specimen and thus the larger the distance change between two electrodes.

  • One of the disadvantages of. wood and wood products is their hydroscopicity or dimensional instability. This is responsible for the loss of green volume of lumber as seasoning degrade. Dimensional stabilization is needed to substantially reduce seasoning defects and degrades and for increasing the serviceability of wood products. Recently, considerable world-wide attention has been drawn to the so-called Wood-Plastic Composites by irradiation-and heat-catalyst-polymerization methods and many research and developmental works have been reported. Wood-Plastic Composites are the new products having the superior mechanical and physical properties and the combinated characteristics of wood and plastic. The purpose of this experiment was to obtain the basic data for the improvement of wooden materials by manufacturing WPC. The species examined were Mulpurae-Namoo (Fraxinus, rhynchophylla), Sea-Namoo (Carpinus laxiflora), Cheungcheung-Namoo (Cornus controversa), Gorosae-Namoo (Acermono), Karae-Namoo(Juglans mandshurica) and Sanbud-Namoo (Prunus sargentii), used as blocks of type A ($3{\times}3{\times}40cm$) and type B ($5{\times}5{\times}60cm$), and were conditioned to about 10~11% moisture content before impregnation in materials humidity control room. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) as monomer and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator are used. The monomer containing BPO was impregnated into wood pieces in the vacuum system. After impregnation, the treated samples were polymerized with heat-catalyst methods. The immersed weights of monomer in woods are directly proportionated to the impregnation times. Monomer impregnation properties of Cheungcheung-Namoo, Mulpurae-Namoo and Seo-Namoo are relatively good, but in Karae-Namoo, it is very difficult to impregnate the monomer MMA. Fig. 3 shows the linear relation between polymer retentions in wood and polymerization times; that is, the polymer loadings are increasing with polymerization times. Furthermore species, moisture content, specific gravity and anatomical or conductible structure of wood, bulking solvents and monomers etc have effects on both of impregnation of monomer and polymer retention. Physical properties of treated materials are shown in table 3. Increasing rates of specific gravity are ranged 3 to 24% and volume swelling 3 to 10%. ASE is 20 to 46%, AE 14 to 50% and RWA 18 to 40%. Especially, the ASE in relation to absorption of liquid water increases approximately with increase of polymer content, although the bulking effect of the polymerization of monomer may also be influential. WPCs from Mulpurae-Namoo and Cheungcheung-Namoo have high dimensional stability, while its of Karae-Namoo and Seo-Namoo are-very low. Table 4 shows the mechanical properties of WPCs from 6 species. With its specific gravity and polymer loading increase, all mechanical properties are on the increase. Increasing rate of bending strength is 10 to 40%, compression strength 25 to 70%, ;impact bending absorbed energy 4 to 74% and tensile strength 18 to 56%. Mulpurae-Namoo and Cheungcheung-Namoo with high polymer content have considerable high increasing rate of strengths. But incase of Karae-Namoo with inferior monomer impregnation it is very low. Polymer retention in cell wall is 0.32 to 0.70%. Most of the polymer is accumulated in cell lumen. Effective. of polymer retention is 58.59% for Mulpurae-Namoo, 26.27% for Seo-Namoo, 47.98% for Cheungcheung-Namoo, 25.64% for Korosae-Namoo, 9.96% for Karae-Namoo and 25.84% for Sanbud-Namoo.

  • In this study, in order to evaluate the self-healing performance of cement composites the self-healing test method and the analysis method were suggested by applying constant water head permeability test, chloride migration test and repeated bending test. The method of making a cracked specimen and controlling crack width are also proposed. Constant head water permeability test can evaluate the healing performance by using the decreasing rate of water flow passing through the crack zone of a specimen. Furthermore, the equivalent crack width can be used to intuitively investigate the healing effect with healing period. The chloride migration test can evaluate the healing rate by the decreasing rate of the diffusion coefficient obtained by ASTM C 1202. Mechanical healing performance can be evaluated using ISR and IDR estimated from load vs. CMOD relationship graph obtained through the repeated bending test. Finally, the applicability of proposed self-healing evaluation methods was examined by testing mortar specimens with or without self-healing agents.

  • Damage sensing of polymer composite films consisting of poly(dicyclopentadiene) p-DCPD and carbon nanotube (CNT) was studied experimentally. Only up to 1st ring-opening polymerization occurred with the addition of CNT, which made the modified film electrically conductive, while interfering with polymerization. The interfacial adhesion of composite films with varying CNT concentration was evaluated by measuring the wettability using the static contact angle method. 0.5 wt% CNT/p-DCPD was determined to be the optimal condition via electrical dispersion method and tensile test. Dynamic fatigue test was conducted to evaluate the durability of the films by measuring the change in electrical resistance. For the initial three cycles, the change in electrical resistance pattern was similar to the tensile stress-strain curve. The CNT/p-DCPD film was attached to an epoxy matrix to demonstrate its utilization as a sensor for fracture behavior. At the onset of epoxy fracture, electrical resistance showed a drastic increase, which indicated adhesive fracture between sensor and matrix. It leads to prediction of crack and fracture of matrix.

  • Zinc oxide (ZnO) and reduced graphite oxide (rGO) composites were synthesized and tested as adsorbents for the hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) adsorption at mid-to-high (300 to $500^{\circ}C$) temperatures. In order to investigate the critical roles of oxygen containing functional groups, such as hydroxyl, epoxy and carboxyl groups, attached on rGO surface for the $H_2S$ adsorption, various characterization methods (TGA, XRD, FT-IR, SEM and XPS) were conducted. For the reduction process for graphite oxide (GO) to rGO, a microwave irradiation method was used, and it provided a mild reduction environment which can remain substantial amount of oxygen functional groups on rGO surface. Those functional groups were anchoring and holding nano-sized ZnO onto the 2D rGO surface; and it prevented the aggregation effect on the ZnO particles even at high temperature ranges. Therefore, the $H_2S$ adsorption capacity had been increased about 3.5 times than the pure ZnO.

  • Polymer foams were used to fill the void in the structure in addition to flame retardant and heat insulation. Polymer foams such as polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, poly(vinyl chloride), polyethylene terephthalate were used to weight lighting materials. In this study, epoxy foam was used to improve mechanical properties of polymer foam. Acid anhydride type hardener reacts with polyol. Using this phenomenon, if blowing agent was added into epoxy resin using acid anhydride type hardener, formation and compressive properties of epoxy foam was studied. Formation of polymer foam was compared with type of blowing agent and concentration of blowing agent via compressive test. As these results, optimized condition of epoxy foam was found and epoxy foam had better compressive property than other polymer foam.

  • In this research, we attempt to fabricate an excellent CFRC(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Carbon), which has good thermal and mechanical properties, with 8H/satin woven fabric prepreg, high modulus and high strength type continuous carbon fiber and raw coal tar pitch(RCTP) matrix or THF soluble fraction(THFSP) matrix which has good graphitizability. Green bodies were fabricated with hot press molding technique and CFRC samples were made after carbonization, impregnation, recarbonization and graphitization steps. For the purpose of characterization of the physical properties, SEM, polarized light microscope, TGA were observed, and tested flexural strength, modulus and ILSS. After heat treating the THFSP matrix up to $2300^{\circ}C$, the value of $C_0$/2 was 3.380$\AA$, which is analogous to the structure of natural graphite and the value of 2$\theta$ is $26.276^{\circ}$ approached to the Bragg's angle of natural graphite. As a result of TGA to test the high temperature air oxidation, the THFSP matrix, graphitized up to $2300^{\circ}C$, exhibited the best air oxidation resistance. And mechanical properties were increased up to 65~70% as fiber volume fraction increased. Because of the good orientation graphitizability, the fracture surface of THFSP matrix CFRC is very good.
