  • The seismic source parameters of the Uljin earthquake on 29 May 2004, including focal depth, focal mechanism, magnitude, and moment tensor elements for source characteristics, are analysed using moment tensor seismic source inversion. The Green‘s function for 3 crust models representing the southern Korean Peninsula are used. Also 3 kinds of epicenters are used to find optimum solution for seismic source parameters. Results show that seismic source parameters have a little dependency of azimuthal distribution and epicentral distances of seismic stations. Final results show that the event, considering 6 moment tensor elements, is caused by the typical reverse fault with nearly NS strike. The focal mechanism implies that the tectonic force around epicenter area currently has compressive environment, with nearly EW principal axis. The focal depth is estimated to be about 12km. The resultant focal mechanism show fairly good agreement to those of other studies. However, focal depth is much different from that of other studies.

  • This paper presents an efficient three-dimensional (3-D) modeling algorithm using the extended approximation to an electric field integral equation. Numerical evaluations of Green's tensor integral are performed in the spatial wavenumber domain. This approach makes it possible to reduce computing time, to handle smoothly varying conductivity model and to remove singularity problems encountered in the integration of Green's tensor at a source point. The responses obtained by 3-D modeling algorithm developed in this study are compared with those by the full integral equation for a thin-sheet EM scattering. The extensive analyses on the performance of modeling algorithm are made with the conductivity contrasts and source frequencies. These results show that the modeling algorithm are accurate up to the conductivity contrast of 1:16 and the frequency range of 100 Hz-100 kHz. The extended Born approximation, however, may produce inaccurate results for some source and model configurations in which the electric field is discontinuous across the conductivity boundary. We performed the modeling of a composite model of which conductivity varies continuously and this shows the modeling algorithm developed in this study is efficient for 3-D EM modeling. For a cross-hole source-receiver configuration a composite model of which conductivity varies continuously can be successfully simulated using this algorithm.

  • In this paper, postbuckling behavior of laminated composite-stringer stiffened-curved panels loaded in local compression is analyzed using the finite element program developed. Postbuckling Analysis is performed in dividing the panel behavior into three basic parts. The eight node degenerated shell element is used in modelling both panel and stiffeners, and the updated Lagrangian description method based on the 2nd Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Green strain tensor is used for the nonlinear finite element formulation. The progressive failure analysis is adopted in order to grasp the failure characteristics. The postbuckling experiment of the laminated composite-stiffened-curved panel had been done to verify the finite element analysis. The buckling load and the postbuckling ultimate load are compared in parametric study.

  • We have developed an algorithm based on the method of integral equations to simulate the magnetotelluric (MT) responses of three-dimensional (3-D) bodies in a layered half-space. The inhomogeneities are divided into a number of cells and are replaced by an equivalent current distribution which is approximated by pulse basis functions. A matrix equation is constructed using the electric Green's tensor function appropriate to a layered earth, and is solved for the vector current in each cell. Subsequently, scattered fields are found by integrating electric and magnetic Green's tensor functions over the scattering current About a 3-D conductive body near the earth's surface, interpretation using 2-D transverse electric modeling schemes can imply highly erratic low resistivities at depth. This is why these routines do not account for the effect of boundary charges. However, centrally located profiles across elongate 3-D prisms may be modeled accurately with a 2-D transverse magnetic algorithm, which implicitly includes boundary charges in its formulation. Multifrequency calculations show that apparent resistivity and impedance phase are really two complementary parameters. Hence, they should be treated simultaneously in broadband MT interpretation.

  • Analysis of mechanical behavior for a pultruded-wound hollow rod is presented. For this purpose, the pultruded-wound hollow rod is manufactured by the new winder attached to the conventional pultrusion system. And the conventional pultrusion process is newly altered to manufacture pultruded-wound specimens. A computer program, POST II, is modified to perform this study, In the nonlinear finite element formulation, the updated Lagrangian description method based on the second Piolar-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Green strain tensor are used. For the finite element modeling of the composite hollow rod, the eight-node degenerated shell element is utilized. In order to estimate the failure, the maximum stress criterion is adopted to the averaged stress in the each layer of the finite elements. As numerical examples, the behavior of glass/up composite hollow rod is investigated from the initial loading to the final collapse. Present finite element results considering stiffness degradation and stress unload due to failure shows excellent agreement with experiments in the ultimate load, failure and deformations.

  • Predicting the deformation behaviors of sheets in thermoforming processes has been a daunting challenge due to the strong nonlinearities arising from very large deformations, mold-polymer contact condition and hyperelasticity constitutive equations. Nonlinear numerical analysis is always required to face this challenge especially for realistic processing conditions. In this study a 3-D algorithm and the membrane approximation are developed for thermoforming processes. The constitutive equation is expressed in terms of the 2nd Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Cauchy-Green deformation tensor. The 2-term Mooney-Rivlin model is used for the material model equation. The algorithm is established by the finite element formulation employing the total Lagrangian coordinate. The deformation behavior and the stress distribution results of 3-D algorithm with various point boundary conditions are compared to those of the membrane approximation algorithm. Also, the slip boundary condition and the no-slip boundary condition are applied for the systems that have molds. Finally, the effect of sheet temperatures on the final thickness distribution is investigated for the ABS material.

  • Ball Grid Array (BGA) is a widely used package type due to its high pin density and good heat dissipation. In BGA, solder balls play an important role in electrically connecting the package to the PCB. Therefore, understanding the inelastic deformation of solder balls under various mechanical loads is essential for the robust design of semiconductor packages. In this study, the geometrical effect on the inelastic deformation and fracture of solder balls were analyzed by finite element analysis. The results showed that fracture occurred in both tilted and hourglass shapes under shear loading, and no fracture occurred in all cases under compressive loading. However, when bending was applied, only the tilted shape failed. When shear and bending loads were combined with compression, the stress triaxiality was maintained at a value less than zero and failure was suppressed. Furthermore, a comparison using the Lagrangian-Green strain tensor of the critical element showed that even under the same loading conditions, there was a significant difference in deformation depending on the shape of the solder ball.

  • Dielectric cover effect of rectangular microstrip patch antenna on uniaxial substrates with airgap are studied. First, we derive Dyadic Green function for selected anisotropic material by constitutive relation and then formulate integral equations of electric fields using Fourier transform in space region. Using Galerkin's moment method, we discretize the electric field integral equations into the matrix form and select sinusoidal functions as basis functions. We verify the validity of numerical results and compare the results with existing ones in showing a good agreement between them. When the dielectric cover thickness is varied, the resonant frequencies and input impedances in the variation of air gap, patch length and thickness and permittivity of superstrate are presented and analyzed.

  • A co-rotational quasi-conforming formulation of four- node stress resultant shell elements using Ivanov-Ilyushin yield criteria are presented for the nonlinear analysis of plate and shell structure. The formulation of the geometrical stiffness is defined by the full definition of the Green strain tensor and it is efficient for analyzing stability problems of moderately thick plates and shells as it incorporates the bending moment and transverse shear resultant force. As a result of the explicit integration of the tangent stiffness matrix, this formulation is computationally very efficient in incremental nonlinear analysis. This formulation also integrates the elasto-plastic material behaviour using Ivanov Ilyushin yield condition with isotropic strain hardening and its asocia ted flow rules. The Ivanov Ilyushin plasticity, which avoids multi-layer integration, is computationally efficient in large-scale modeling of elasto-plastic shell structures. The numerical examples herein illustrate a satisfactory concordance with test ed and published references.
